- g3r4, on 11/12/2009, -0/+19How about we just sink some billions into laying fiber everywhere, and this time we just don't let ISPs do this again: http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2007/pulpit_200 ...
- Ghostalker, on 11/12/2009, -0/+16We gave them hundreds of BILLIONS (not millions) of dollars back in the 90s and all they did was raise the rates on us, and belittle us for "being lucky to have high speed". If anything we should be supporting local-based ISPs who offer amazing high-speeds at sensible prices EG: Greenlight ISP, and FiberNet Monticello. They don't ***** over the customer for profit margin, and offer at least 50Mb/s speeds at much-better-than-market prices. A few more of those ISPs and the big companies will have to compete, rather then dominate.
- Endeavour3d, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11Giving blank checks to people with no regulations, oversight, or limits on how the money can be used has worked so great in the 1000s of times it's been done in the past, so why not do it again?
- zmigliozzi, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8Only $7 billion more, that's just pocket change lately it seems.
- agentsrecord, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6It's about time that internet became just another utility, like water or electricity. When teachers advise using EBSCOhost and ProQuest to finish assignments that sends a clear message.
- Elranzer, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5I recall a story about a municipal ISP being set up in a town, which basically forced the corporate ISP (who had a a monopoly in the area prior) to lower its rates and raise the bandwidth. But it only did this with competition from the municipal ISP option.
A macro example of this would be the US Postal Service. I honestly can't see how UPS and FedEx can stay in business with USPS's pricing so low, except UPS/FedEx's international services. You can even get FedEx service for USPS's prices, since the USPS just uses FedEx for their overnight and international options.
Seems like this is a better method than just giving blank stimulus cheques out. - Ghostalker, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5FTA: "“TDS is a job-producing, tax-paying company with millions of dollars invested in the state of Minnesota and the community of Monticello. The Appeals Court decision sends a chilling message to the private business community operating in the state of Minnesota."
The only message they should be getting is the only conclusion to draw from... either start offering what the customer wants (you know, the way capitalism is SUPPOSED to work) of prepare to be replaced. Just because you got there first and became stagnant doesn't mean you have a right to sit there forever twiddling your thumbs and killing competition. Do something, or get out of the way. - Elranzer, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4The gov't should just create some federal jobs outright instead of giving stimulus money tio corporations and *hoping* that they'll not just pocket the money (which is exactly what's happening).
Even if they're just consulting or temp jobs, such as for a public works project or building the fiber network themselves, it would still have a better effect on the economy and job market than giving the money to corporate CEOs and letting them do their magic. - kaelyiesta, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4That is exactly what won't be possible when giving money to an exclusive few. This money being redistributed by a central authority with no way to measure it's its choices is just guessing at best, and playing favorites at worse. States and cities still sponsor local monopolies which decrease productivity so adding taxpayer money(or loaned/printed money) is only throwing fuel on the fire.
- g3r4, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Now THAT would be the wrong thing to do. The government has proven time and time again that they don't give a ***** about our privacy, so why would we give them an even more direct access point to our communications? They already have the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act and DCSNet, so let's not make it any easier for them.
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Dugg up for aptly chosen and well expressed analogy.
- B3bomber, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Right. Like AT&T doesn't do for the NSA already? Government should own the infrastructure (read, we the tax paying people) but NOT be the ISP. They should be leasing out the lines to see who can offer the best services and features with them.
- rignopolis, on 11/12/2009, -1/+1Suppose they'd give someone money to "study" how much better porn is on a broadband connection?
- lostinseganet, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2I think that the government should transform the post office into an INTERNET provider. Then they would catch up with competitors in a bigg way.
- zmigliozzi, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2My dad has worked at UPS 25yrs and I at FedEx for 2yrs I can tell you that yes USPS does offer low prices but they do not guarantee delivery. The flexibility for customers is also very limited using USPS, while UPS and FedEx simplify processes for business pickups. In the end the QoS of usps can't really compete with that of UPS/FedEx.
