- dakdak900, on 05/01/2009, -3/+22net neutrality where are you?
- robbob, on 05/01/2009, -0/+17the speeds "up to" bugs me
if I'm getting 28kbps up when its supposed to be "up to 1MB", they are still w/in their guidelines - Mtown, on 05/01/2009, -2/+17Completely disagree with this article. I enjoy my dial-up internet, rotary phones and horse-drawn carriages, thank you very much.
- bluechigger, on 05/01/2009, -1/+13Those NetZero commercials are infuriating. ***** product, ***** marketing.
- Mtown, on 05/01/2009, -1/+13I'd rather go with a service that claimed "at least 7mbps guaranteed" than a service claiming "up to 10mbps". I bet the 7mbps one would turn out to be faster most of the time.
- Yankees368, on 05/01/2009, -0/+11Cablevision and Verizon Fios do not cap their services at all. If either Cablevision or Verizon capped their services, people would flock to the to other, as their service areas overlap.
- celotil, on 05/01/2009, -0/+11ISP's and Phone Companies selling Internet services with lies are one of those things that really gets my hackles up. As I write this now I can feel my pulse rising from a fairly sedate sixty-five to at least one hundred, and so hopefully you'll understand when I say,
***** THE ***** ***** ***** US EVERY ***** DAY WITH THEIR ***** ***** ***** PHONE AND ***** INTERNET ***** ACCESS ***** PLANS ***** LYING THROUGH THEIR ***** TEETH ABOUT THEIR ***** GREAT ***** PLANS AND ***** TELLING US ***** LIES ABOUT THE OPPOSITION WHEN THEY'RE ALL THE ***** SAME EVERY LAST ***** ONE OF THE ***** *****!!!
Thank you. - illTech, on 05/01/2009, -1/+10Everyone claims theyre better. Time Warner splits their touting how much faster they are than AT&T at the same time they are testing data caps in areas. Slogan: "We'll help you hit your cap sooner"
All this is crap! When will broadband connectivity be made a public utility so it can be regulated more and true free-market competition can step in? Id love FIOS but AT&T runs all the phones here, only choice is Cable or DSL and theres only 1 provider for each. *****! - WarriorBlake, on 05/01/2009, -2/+11Fact: Not everyone has Broadband.
In a day and age where Broadband is a near necessity, it's quite despicable that the US has failed to fix this problem. We have the technology, but the ISPs don't have the desire to do so. Until then, who knows when the other 50% of Americans can get Broadband. - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8Comcast sucks.
- AngelBunny, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8Fact: Back in the 90's pre DOCSIS cable modem days cable modem ISPs did not cap their customers internet. Back in the 90's my average download started at 500kB/s a only went up using @home. People began getting capped when ISPs realized if they capped the net they could sell back the original higher speeds in the forum of tiers which earned them more money.
Cable ISPs have been lieing to their consumers since the late 90's. - majormajor42, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8Broadband via the Powerline (BPL) could be an option for rural communities. The infrastructure is already there if you have electricity running to your house.
- greevar, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8I hate that behavior. If the ISP is offering me "up to" such speed, I'll pay them "up to" so many dollars a month. I don't want to pay for what I *might* get, I want to pay for what I am entitled to as a paying customer. That's just an excuse for them to oversell their service and not be held responsible when the service goes to *****.
- greevar, on 05/01/2009, -0/+7Don't forget "People PC". They're pretty lame as well.
- VPurpmalkV, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5I work for a DSL company. With our 10MB service, we garauntee at least 7MBps. And when it drops below 7, you can bet we do everything we possible can to restore it. And on average the customers I deal with are usually running more in the 9-9.9 range.
And if you believe that you can get a full on constant 10MBPS connection 24/7. You're fooling yourself. - glendower, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5is this a cable company making fun of a phone company for having "copper lines"
If so, what fancy metal are they using in coaxial cable these days? - cam0man, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5I paid extra for the comcast 'blast' package which provided 'boosts of 16mbps'. I got the service and ran some analysis after I noticed NOTHING close to 16mbps. Turns out, for the first couple kilobytes it would have a small spike, as in for a second. I called them up to complain, they said 'well, it does that just for the first percentage of the file to give you a speed boost', I asked them how they knew how large the file was and they just kept spouting out marketing jargon. I canceled the service and sent them a blast of curse words for the first percentage of my cancellation notification.
- phylum, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5commercials always compare "dial-up" with "broadband", must think were retarded.
- zebragrrl, on 05/01/2009, -0/+5"Broadband" is a lousy name for a Decepticon anyways.
- Yankees368, on 05/01/2009, -1/+6Cablevision is known for their deceptive advertising. They are also taking advantage of the DTV switch, by not telling viewers of their commercial that the easier, and free solution to the DTV switch is a $10 after federal rebate converter, not their basic cable service.
- BigVi, on 05/01/2009, -3/+8Who cares. With internet that fast Id hit my monthly cap the same day I had the service installed.
- Sagags, on 05/01/2009, -1/+5Oh really? i don't give a ***** about your spam.
- draxenato, on 05/01/2009, -0/+4We've had HD for over five years in Europe
- Mysticcal, on 05/01/2009, -0/+4People still uncap their modems ;)
- bobbi21, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Not sure how that relates to what ppl are talking about here...We were mad about how ads misrepresent the truth...not how companies are jacking up prices...
(Not that THAT is a new thing either...Pretty much all ads lie or deceive. You really think they show real food in all those restaurant commercials? Should be used to it by now) - ErickStevenson, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3I miss cablevision, was great when I was in NY... now I only have CoX and Qwest =(
- MrTea, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3it'll stop when shareholders say it can stop
- dsmx, on 05/01/2009, -1/+4Wouldn't need it if you had actual competition in the broadband market.
- 360modena, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3Here in NYC, Time Warner has run commercials comparing their cable lines to FiOS. The spout something about fiber not being new and claiming to have "been using fiber for years". They clearly aren't noting that they are using fiber only on their end, and not last-mile FTTH like FiOS. Misleading consumers like that is just wrong.
- Treshnell, on 05/01/2009, -0/+3No new information here...
Company A compares their best service and lowest price to Company B's worst service and highest price... - majormajor42, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2anybody here live in an area with Broadband over Powerlines (BRL) ?
- javaroast, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2If Time Warner says "Unlimited Internet" there is no cap to reach. Time Warner's own COO, Landel Hobbs says that heavy internet users are not affecting Time Warner. You've been misled by another type of broadband deception at the hands of Time Warner.
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/08/time-warn ...
"Mr. Hobbs tried to strike a balance, saying that while the company is concerned about the cost to maintain its broadband network, investors should not be worried. He said it was “absolutely not” true that Time Warner’s profits were being squeezed by the cost of heavy broadband users.
“If you are getting feedback that there is an immediate problem, nothing could be further from the truth,” he said. " - KIERANMULLEN, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2The government says we don't need net neutrality
Obama Nominates New FCC Commissioner
Carriers pleased, though progressives worry about close AT&T ties...
12:00PM Friday May 01 2009 by Karl Bode
The President has announced the appointment of Mignon Clyburn to the FCC. Clyburn is a commissioner on the South Carolina Public Service Commission and the daughter of Representative James Clyburn (D-SC), who has a history of voting against network neutrality.
story continues..

- Mike17102, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2For those that dont know, "People PC" = Earthlink. They were bought by Earthlink years and years ago. The saves reps at Earthlink were even allowed to offer People PC as a last resort to try and save customers.
- AngelBunny, on 05/01/2009, -0/+2are you sure about that? i was downloading scene rlses in the 90's just as I am today. If anything, I'm using almost exactly the same amount of monthly bandwidth as I was 10 years ago now. In 99 my average bw was 180 to 220GB a month. The average I've done in the last 3 years by month is approx 220 to 240GB.
oh, and I'm still uncapped just like I was in the 90's. ISPs lie so much people believe it unanimously today for the most part. - regeya, on 08/21/2009, -0/+1Maybe not to a lot of people. However, at my job, we have pre-production in one office, and post-production in another town. Now, truth be told, we could DRIVE the thing there, or relocate all the satellite offices to the same town. But why do that when we can drop our PDFs into a folder?
Absolutes tend to make people look uninformed when they're used. - Myztry, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Forget all these cables (be they fibre optic or copper). The domestic wireless spectrum is free from cost and free from monopoly.
Some company needs to sell consumer-micro-ISP manageable (sharing quota/throttle/etc) wireless routers so people can pool onto a single ultra highspeed connection. A $200 a month ultra connection across 20 users would only cost $10 per user. Throw in a few dollars each for the host/admin, or simply have there share cost nothing.
They would be NAT connections and not very good for P2P/etc but for $10-$15 a month it would be well worth it for many. Beats laying all those ugly cables all over the place, cutting holes in the wall for some lowgrade $15 standalone service. - szor3n, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1Nah, Comcast used to suck, untill they stopped throttling torrents, Now I'm on their 29.99 pay as you go plan and I easily break 25mbps on speedtest, and torrent at about 4MBps both ways..
- say592, on 05/01/2009, -1/+2Meh, such is marketing.
- regeya, on 08/21/2009, -0/+1The local co-op talked about that here. and talked. and talked. and talked...dsl is available here now, and holy Christmas wireless is getting to be downright ubiquitous.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -1/+2Well if you are using their service already 10-to-1 you got a cable box and don't need the rebate in the first place.
- Astaro, on 05/01/2009, -4/+5Broadband over powerlines generates enournous amounts of radio interference, Making the technology completely unusable
- regeya, on 08/21/2009, -0/+1Oh, whoo, we may be behind Europe on Internet penetration, but we're beatin' em on passive-entertainment high-def boob tube penetration!
USA! USA! USA!
Where's my rack of ribs? - torindkflt, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1If I remember correctly, NetZero started throwing around their "the same internet" quote several years ago as a method of comparing their dial-up service against AOL's dial-up service. At the time it was a valid claim, since AOL was notoriously high priced for a dial-up ISP.
I agree though, it seems now that they're trying to twist the meaning of their inventive quote so that it appears to be a fair comparison to "all other" internet services, including broadband. Bad move. - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/05/just-5-of-eur ...
Sorry Europe is behind. - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Comcast sucks. And you suck. Damned Comcast-lover.
- w1cked1, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1copper clad steel, same as phone companies
- waydee, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1I feel like I've come full circle with internet connections, I went from metered to unmetered dialup and then spent many years on cable with my speed being gradually upgraded to 10mbps with no caps, I moved and had no option but to get ADSL and my service has gone downhilll from the day it was activated. Sometimes the connection is so unstable it restricts itself to 512kbps, other times it's back to 8mbps, all with a meagre 50gb/month cap. I'm not a fan of ADSL simply because there are so many old buildings here with less than perfect phone lines, it just seems like a far more fragile and temperamental setup than cable was.
There's a big push to enable my exchange for 24mbps ADSL2+ but I feel they're missing the point when so many buildings in this area simply aren't wired to receive such a service. It's near impossible to find an ADSL ISP that doesnt enforce caps as well, i'm back to less than perfect metered internet with no real choices available. Fiber to the home trials are only just getting started here in the UK so that's a number of years off for me. - AngelBunny, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1mainly tv over IP and voice over IP. I've gone more towards hulu and pandora recently but I still have stations streaming in the background often.
