- CamEdwardo, on 09/08/2008, -0/+10They have been doing this for a while, personally i think these are good steps in the right direction
- endersdad, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6Love the timeline feature. And it goes back quite a few years..
http://tinyurl.com/6h8jhu - YancyFryJr, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5I certainly appreciate that Google is willing and able to dump money into cool stuff like this. Hell, they're not perfect, but they certainly do some good in the world.
- greatgatsbyII, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I figured it out. It has to say google archive next to the article. You have to search through a lot of stories you have to pay for to find the free stuff.
- greatgatsbyII, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I've been unable to search for anything and have it come up in paper view mode. I searched things that they suggested like Titanic located or americans walk on moon with no luck. What am I doing wrong?
- YancyFryJr, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Ok, and...?
I won't deny that Google is in it to make some money, but it doesn't change the fact that they pump money into interesting research and therefore do some good. - Charklii, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Wow. I enjoyed that newspaper article on the moonlanding more than anything I've read in the news lately o_O Immensely awesome move from Google...
- waydee, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2This is a very good idea, ideally I'd love to see it rival a service like LexisNexis and I'm sure it will.
- fury420, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2i too sat down and gave it a good read, will be nice to see such historic moments available online so easily
- mrswirl, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2***** Google. They stole this technology from the company I used to work for.
Olive Software has been doing newspaper archive digitization for years and their product is much more elegant. A couple years back Google came around looking to buy us and it was only after Olive opened their kimono and showed Google how it was done that the deal fell apart "at the 11th hour".
Fast forward 2 years and *surprise* - guess what Google's doing now?!
Check out some of these sites to see what Olive's been doing for years now:

I spend way too much time looking scrolling and not being able to just type some keywords.
I look forward to this! - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Those comments are fantastic!
- andrew24601, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I went straight to the back for the funny pages. ;-)

Aw screw it. - zigardne, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Dugg for LexisNexis
- stellamaris, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I work in the state and regional history collection at a university. We have newspapers on microfilm that people pay us $20 an hour to find information from, like obituaries or crimes. You have to load the machine just right, then scroll through the entire reel until you get to the right range of dates, and scan the page for the right name or headline. It sucks.
Why doesn't Google open public libraries all over the country using only their services? - lornali, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1This will be very popular
- phogasmic, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1For all of the so called evil that Google does, they do projects that immensely useful and good like this. Kudos to Google. If only the newspapers like NYT would put they're old archives up for free. I think they could make some money running ads on those.
- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Agreed, but why not use the direct link:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=w0sNAAAAIBAJ& ... - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I agree, Charklii. News was written so much differently in years past. When one reads articles in a newspaper now, there is no telling how well it will be written. Somehow, written news has become a lost gift. It amazes me how many errors are in news articles, these days, or what is passed off as news.

- 360news, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I wish you luck - If you have a unique product, it should do well.
Many news websites representing old newspapers are already doing this to some degree, and I also know of a few companies who do this for modern newspaper editions, although a subscription is required to access the latest dates. - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't say more elegant.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+1hell yeah, now if publishers would start digitizing books (and selling them)
- roelsc, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0Indeed, it seems like it's again a revenue sharing idea from our friends at Google. I understand that the effort to achieve this needs to be funded from somewhere, but it's a bit of a bummer.
- zoydberg, on 09/09/2008, -1/+1any websites(digg!!!) using captchas should move to recaptcha, itll bring everyone in on the project, recaptcha.net ftw
- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -1/+1Yah, but instead of using a timeline on "Adam & Eve", I prefer something a little more science based :

Fonemine shuts shop. Is this true? - margrita, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0Yes, the idea of Newspaper Archives sounds amazing with an ever increasing reach of online newspapers. You don’t need to pile up old newspapers & magazine any more with the news just a click away. Companies like Pressmart http://www.pressmart.net/digital_library.html have redefined the way news items are read across the globe with access to online newspaper/magazine archives in over 22 languages. I think it will jumpstart a new trend in the digital publishing industry.
- ashokkapoor, on 12/23/2008, -0/+0Newspapers are an excellent source of historical information, now it will be unlocked for everyone to search and read. This show how these companies perceive the importance of all kinds of information -- be it breaking news, or hundreds of years old. There is a company Pressmart Pvt. Ltd. (www.pressmart.net) which provides online readers with 400 years of newspaper/magazine Archives too with the facility to choose which delivery options suits you best like web, RSS, accessed by Mobile, podcast etc. Pressmart transforms the static online replica of a journal/newspaper/magazine into an intuitive, interactive online medium.
- kishosingh, on 09/09/2008, -1/+1Yes, it is good idea. By it all the local news also will available on online.
