- dfwcharlie, on 10/12/2007, -15/+58I won't be shopping or downloading anything from Wal-mart.
- SLYK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40right, they sell cartoon porn...
- drstock, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42Buried because of "Breaking!" topic.
- xuanyan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29So you believe that the digital downloads from walmart will be low quality? Should be just as good as anywhere else, but 6 cents cheaper. Also, there is the added bonus that you don't actually have to go IN to walmart to download from walmart.
- durazine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27IE only, nice job Walmart.
We're sorry ...
Our website requires the browser Internet Explorer version 6 or higher. It appears that you are using Firefox, Safari, or another browser that Wal-Mart Video Downloads doesn't currently support. Click here to get Internet Explorer for free from Microsoft. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26The story doesn't cover the most important aspect: which DRM is Wal-mart going to use, if any? Are these going to be WMV, AVI, MPEG?
And if the pricing is going to be the same as buying the movie on DVD, what's my incentive? - Culled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"The story doesn't cover the most important aspect: which DRM is Wal-mart going to use, if any? Are these going to be WMV, AVI, MPEG?"
Oh you can bet that if Wal-Mart got all six of the big studios on board then this is going to be loaded up with DRM up the wazoo. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28I wonder if they have slaves manually copying files byte by byte to their servers.
- blakeley, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28It looks like Tom from MySpace designed that!
- jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -12/+33I avoid walmart like the plague. I don't know if their scheme will work, I just hope it doesn't.
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Wow, I thought this thread would be a "death to iTunes" fiesta... I am SO glad to see that our love and hatred towards our differing OS's still doesn't hinder us from uniting against the evil that is Walmart.
I gained a little hope today. - tcquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20The story doesn't cover that, but the FAQ does:
"What operating systems do you support?
We currently support Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Vista (32 bit only no Macintosh or Linux)"
"How can I find out which version of Windows Media Player I have?
To find out launch Windows Media Player, click Help, and then select About Windows Media Player."
http://mediadownloads.walmart.com/mmce/jsp/FAQHome.jsp - peterjhill, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28I will never ever ever ever buy anything at walmart. I will put no money into their pockets.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Sweet, now all those Wal-mart customers can download "Joe Dirt: The Director's Cut" to their old desktop machines that are sitting on milk crates in their front yards...
- dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Breaking news describes, in television or radio , an interruption of scheduled programming in order to report the latest details of a current event. It commonly suggests a sense of urgency, with appropriate photographs, video, or other related materials to give the viewer a visual idea of what is occurring. The presentation of breaking news varies depending upon the network, but could include a news ticker, logos, and various other graphics. Possibly because some Breaking News stories are unscheduled, networks and affilates usually don't have enough information to be included or to last a few hours
The terms breaking news and special report are terms used to describe when a broadcast network breaks into regular programming for coverage of an important news story. Some networks and local stations may use the term breaking news interchangeably with special report.
In Digg terms it is anyone who wants to get their story on the front page.... - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16they still don't get it to they. Why would you pay $20 for a download when you could just buy the DVD for less and rip it without DRM?
idiots. - ryanmerket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Non-working in Mac Firefox, jumbled navigation in Safari... Not coded in Web Standards - In short, HORRIBLE. If you are going to sell movies at least get a firm to code in WEB STANDARDS. Jeeeez.
- Sodathief, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21I can't think of anything funny to say :(. I guess Wal-mart being all knowing and controlling has some serious pull in Hollywood.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15As much as we all hate Wal-Mart, competition is a good thing. I hope they don't fail, but I won't be buying from them.
As long as they don't overtake the market everything will be okay. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Yes, Hollywood fights the Apple iTunes monopoly, by partnering with.....Wal-Mart???
Way to stick it to the man! - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@ryanmerket
Windows Firefox doesn't work, either.
Edit: Loads very nicely in IE 7
EDIT: WHOA! It loads perfectly in Opera, too! - akarpo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This will fail. Your average Walmart customer does not have the skills or proficiency needed to utilize this service. I'm not hating against Walmart, this is just the reality of the situation.
- rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21***** Wal-Mart
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here's what the site looks like viewed in FireFox. Garble garble.
http://i9.tinypic.com/40biohx.jpg - jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Yes, walmart as a whole bothers me
http://www.walmartwatch.com to find out some reasons why - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19I guess they do. I'm just happy to see someone put up a hell of a competition for iTunes. It's about time a competitor was able to one-up that store, and hopefully Apple will rebuke twice as hard.
I personally have nothing against Wal Mart. Very convenient store, I end up buying computer games there pretty frequently once they hit the 20$ price mark. Sure their business ethics aren't the best, but that doesn't stop me from buying gasoline or medicene ala big pharma, so why should I not shop walmart? - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15This is going to flop hard.
- ToxicBomber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You forgot to capitalize every letter in the word BREAKING....your new here aren't you?
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And now flag564 throws the race card to try to enflame the thread. Anything for a little attention, eh flag? Nice work.
- tcquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sorry for the double-post, but I'll add one more tidbit:
What format(s) are available for TV episodes?
Portable: Our TV episodes are optimized for fast downloads and viewing on the go. All TV shows can be played on both your PC/Laptop and compatible portable video players. Please note that due to licensing restrictions portable files will not play on iPOD, Sony PSP, or Microsoft Zune portable players. - beauc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I can't imagine a time coming that I would buy a movie download from WalMart.
- SamMiller0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7IE only, no Mac or Linux support
no thanks - superphly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's funny because Giganews has been offering them for a while now... *snicker*
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Imagine working at the support department for this service?
My god the crazy rednecks that would call in... I can't imagine the stories... - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6IE only. What a joke.
- tjkombo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I would never purchase these, they will not work on all my devices. Plus its Wal-Mart, just feels strange. I like my 360 and its setup and iTunes makes up for the rest. No thank you Wal-Mart, but thanks for the competition, now maybe the other guys will do their best to get on board.
- Cybrwolf, on 10/12/2007, -14/+19@ Achalemoipas
I don't know why your getting dugg down. Your info is correct, and people need to know this stuff! - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9"...a set top box but it has to be seemless and I don't think Walmart has the capacity to even attempt to do that."
Huh? Dude, where'd you get that *****? Don't bogart that man...
Walmart wanted better financial services, so they formed a bank. Walmart is paying too much for electricity, so they're working to buy their power wholesale.
They probably don't WANT to become a set box maker, but if they WANT to they have the capacity, the resources, and the scratch to do it. - einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Avoiding walmart is fine and dandy when they're beating out Uncle Joes, but digital distribution? What is wrong with them this time? Or is it just Wallmart as a whole that bothers you?"
Because WalMart bullied their way into this agreement. They threatened Disney after the first round with Apple's announcements, and they have campaigned the majors ever since.
The leverage is in the WalMart stores themselves. You want your movies to be sold in their stores? You play ball. You align yourself with Apple and refuse to participate in the WalMart Downloads program? Suddenly your DVDs can't find shelf space, and your back-end profits from DVD sales hangs in the balance. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Stop with the breaking junk. Buried.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And spare me the "you're a troll" comments. I've heard it thousands of times, and it means nothing to me.
Let me file that under painfully obvious - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Avoiding walmart is fine and dandy when they're beating out Uncle Joes, but digital distribution? What is wrong with them this time? Or is it just Wallmart as a whole that bothers you?
- LDanix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Wal-Mart is just another big corporation that doesn't get it about what the technology market wants. All they're after is a profit. They apparently didn't learn from the mistakes of their music service; this one won't be any different.
The game won't be over until someone offers the same "DVD experience" (extras, easily rippable, cheap, and HD) without the disc. There is still a long way to go until someone "gets it". In the mean time, continue warning potential suckers of the dangers. Then set back and watch the show. - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh, yeah, flag564 is INDEED a troll. Despises apple with a psychopathic vigor.
Apparently loves walmart too. Talk about a lemming. - djphatjive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BREAKING, EVERYONE ON DIGG COMENTS ON BREAKING!
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3inaccurate, thepiratebay and various other trackers have also been exclusively digital distributing movies from all six...
- djphatjive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And they still cost an arm and a leg!
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3flag, I know you're a bit unstable, but try to grasp this: you don't have to be a fan of any other company to know that walmart ***** sucks BALLS. Your little digg campaign against apple is pathetic, dude- it won't change anything!
- Dragon88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Doesn't matter to me. Wallmart still won't carry independent or controversial entertainment, so there is still a wide opening for others. Remember, 50% of Netflix's buisness is with movies that don't have enough marketshare to be carried in a bricks and mortar store. Consequently, online stores with a wide selection who are willing to carry obscure titles will still be able to take back the market.
- djphatjive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WORKS ON 360!!!!!!!!!!
