- Lindquist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Someone missed the class where the use of apostrophes was taught.
- villemba, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40There is no article up there yet. In an effort to minimize the strain on the gov't servers during a rather critical time, I have pasted the contents of the most recent tsunami warning bulletin:
TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 002
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1631Z 03 MAY 2006
THIS BULLETIN IS FOR ALL AREAS OF THE PACIFIC BASIN EXCEPT
ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - WASHINGTON - OREGON - CALIFORNIA.
... A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT ...
A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR
TONGA / NIUE / AMERICAN SAMOA / SAMOA / WALLIS-FUTUNA / FIJI
FOR ALL OTHER PACIFIC AREAS, THIS MESSAGE IS AN ADVISORY ONLY.
AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS
ORIGIN TIME - 1527Z 03 MAY 2006
COORDINATES - 19.9 SOUTH 174.2 WEST
LOCATION - TONGA ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 7.8
EVALUATION
IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES
TO HOURS. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE
ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE
TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE REGION AND REPORT IF ANY
TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED. THE WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND
TO OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED
TO WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.
ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES
MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. THE TIME
BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE TSUNAMI WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

- jwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21The earthquake that caused the major tsunamis in 2004 was a 9.0-9.2 (it was later upgraded). That means this quake was 32 times less powerful according to the Richter scale: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale
Still I bet it'll no picnic. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Because 285+ people found it interesting.

- exaviger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19(CNN) -- Tsunami warnings were issued for Fiji and New Zealand early Thursday (local time) after a massive earthquake measuring about 8.0 in magnitude shook the southern Pacific Ocean.
The quake's epicenter was about 90 miles off the coast of Tonga, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck Wednesday 3:26 p.m. UTC, or 4:26 a.m. Thursday in Tonga.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami wave could hit Suva, Fiji, as early as 5:13 p.m. UTC (5:13 a.m. local time) before affecting New Zealand's coastal cities in the following hours. - kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22http://digg.com/science/Two-Thirds_of_young_Americans_are_geographically_inept

The link normally keeps the original title regardless of what the title is then edited to. I guess someone didn't want word getting out that a Digg user would refer to a possible imminent tragedy as breaking fscking news. - cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Visual map of earthquake location along with stats shown here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/

- OriginalOG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Its not only the size of the quake that dictates the size of the tsunami. There has to be either ocean floor subduction/lift or a massive landslide cause by the quake for a tsunami to occur.
- Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26To those saying Digg is not for this kind of stuff, sorry for saying it, but that's inevitably where this website is going to go. It's the AP of the future
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I just flipped over to CNN. I kinda laughed when I saw them using Google Earth.
Also, just downgraded to 7.8 from 8.0 - Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16definately glad they edited the title.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Look, just because you can rate stories on this site and have a strong opinion does NOT necessarily mean you're in charge or that your opinion matters more than other people's. Majority rule in most things. Sorry, but them's the breaks.
- jsisson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Isn't it time Digg graduated from 'Tech' to 'Anything'? People post lots of stuff, and the interesting stuff gets dugg, Tech AND everything else. The community, therefore, appreciates Digg as a 'Anything' community, rather than a 'Tech' community.
I'm also tired of people commenting on how a story isn't 'Tech'. I like Digg because it covers anything interesting. - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12front page in record time..

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR
THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS IN THE PACIFIC
ALTHOUGH SOME OTHER AREAS MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES.
THE TSUNAMI WARNING IS CANCELLED.
THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.
THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE BULLETINS
FOR ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - WASHINGTON - OREGON - CALIFORNIA. - Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That comment just made my day. Poor Keith Richards is too old to be climbing trees, even if it is for a lovely bunch of coconuts.

- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6On CNN just now 1:15pm Eastern Time:
"Now determined to be a 7.6 magnitude and 15km deep (under the ocean floor not the water)." Probably no Tsunami either, good news for folks in that area! - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Stand down!! Warning has been cancelled. We now resume the previously scheduled program, already in progress.
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"That comment just made my day. Poor Keith Richards is too old to be climbing trees, even if it is for a lovely bunch of coconuts"
Erh? coconuts?, his spliff probably blew into the trees hehe - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7People dugg this because they think other people should know about it and because digging it to the front page is a good way to do that. Then once on the front page, people digg it so it looks like they care.
I bet at most 10% of the people who dugg this actually care about it.
And seeing as how the predicted tsunami should have happened hours ago, there is absolutely no reason to digg this now.
And any one who cares if Kevin or Alex dugg this is a tool. - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I was watching CNN and they said there was a 16 inch Tsunami...doesnt sound to bad.
- wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11unbelievable, good luck to all those in the affected Islands.
- ajwillys, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Perhaps because earthquakes are scientifically interesting, especially when they generate tsunami's. Even more interesting is the short period of time between earthquake and tsunami. When we all go home tonight and watch the tsunami coverage, I know we'll all be telling our families how we knew it when it was "just an earthquake".
That's Why! - halik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5New Zeland Seismographs:

I hope they evaccuate people asap - turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8excelent link. Thank you. Prayers go out to everyone who will be hit by this. I just hope everyone on those islands are as aware of this as those us of who are state side or wherever you may happen to digg.

Seems to default to zoomed in too far, just zoom out. - typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Better updated article on MSNBC - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12612687/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just lowered to 6.3
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to the bulletin here: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/pr/ptwc/wmsg, the tsunami warning was cancelled, even though small waves (.15 m) were created. I'm not sure if this applies to NZ, as it wasn't the NOAA that originally posted the warning for NZ. Apparently no danger to coastal areas is posed. Good news, now I don't have to wake my family in Nelson up.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Which makes your inclusion of "tsunami expected" all the less justified.
Ah, sensationalism! - tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They were using it when it was still called keyhole.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5who cares.. the only people that care about dupes are another poster, who didnt post at a good time to get lots of diggs and feels left out for not getting credit for finding the story(get a life) and a bunch of self appointed dupe natzis that have nothing intelligent to say on a subject so they complain like they own the place and last someone who read the same story at 4am yesterday..etc.. sorry i didnt see the story then.. i would have dugg it if i was up but i wasnt..I and many other people are awake now and enough of us dugg it to make it to the front page. THis site isnt called zero hour news and sometimes the dupe is a better article with more information.. SO please give it up.. if enough people felt like you it wouldnt make it to the front page.. or you can report as lame and it will go away..BUT more people dont think like you
SO enough... why do you think dupe complaintz get sooooo many neg diggs? cause no one but you cares!!! - villemba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is true. But you need to consider the source of the initial digg. The guy who posted this initially had the title as "Breaking F*cking News: 8.2 Earthquake in Pacific Tsunami Expected" and had it linked to cnn.com where the only thing mentioned on there was a banner that flashed along the top for all of 5 min.
