- bamafun, on 05/17/2008, -1/+167Ars Technica is one of my favorite blogs, i hope it doesn't change.
- sochee, on 05/17/2008, -4/+77I just hate it when people use "Breaking" in the titles...
- mateo60, on 05/17/2008, -4/+55I cancelled my Wired subscription about a year ago, it had just been going downhill. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to Ars Technica, which is one of the best tech news sites out there.
- cartman005, on 05/17/2008, -1/+35I'm sick of all these mergers lately. I hope it doesn't affect the content.
- cloudcity, on 05/17/2008, -1/+23I am I the only one seriously worried about this?
When I think of Wired, I think of one or two good articles and 100 pages of ads. Hopefully they will keep their mits off of Ars and not dumb it down... - fkr3, on 05/17/2008, -3/+23You're completely right, except for the bit where most blogs just regurgitate ***** in a circle of boredom to see if any ad impressions can be squeezed off summarising a piece of news that started 6 blogs away from them and was probably an unfounded rumour or opinion anyway.
Ars is a rare exception in that they usually write their own stuff and put effort into it. (most of the time anyway) - IphtashuFitz, on 05/17/2008, -3/+21BREAKING: Another submitter who doesn't know the appropriate use of "BREAKING". It means a news story that is currently unfolding and new details are likely to arise as the story unfolds. A hostage taking is breaking. A major earthquake or storm that causes massive damage & injuries is breaking. News that a company was acquired by another company is NOT breaking. There are no new details that will change about this story as time proceeds. Please only use "BREAKING" when it's appropriate, not just to make your submission look so important.
- command-tab, on 05/17/2008, -0/+18Good buy. Ars is one of my favorites -- I hope they don't go and screw it up.
- iXneonXi, on 05/17/2008, -1/+17Please don't ***** it up...
- roflbrothel, on 05/17/2008, -11/+27*****, ARS was one of my favorite sites. I HATE Wired and Reddit, they're awful. Crap content, crap writers. I'd say I hope they don't ***** it up with their fail but I'm pretty sure that they will. :(
- mweflen, on 05/17/2008, -1/+14Either it happened or it didn't happen. Unless you're in the damn room taking notes on what the lawyers are saying, it isn't BREAKING...
- blake10, on 05/17/2008, -5/+15but in this case, they actually write their own content and do their own research. many/most blogs exist to only repurpose content to be submitted to social media sites. well-deserved for arstechnica. however they DO owe some of their success to digg. digg really put them on the map.
- robthom, on 05/17/2008, -0/+10Agreed. Thats an awesome site. It always worries me when something cool gets bought out. It reminds me of the rape and destruction of TechTV among other examples. I hope this goes smoothly.
- MetaMars, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9Rich Uncle Pennybags approves of this acquisition.
- roflbrothel, on 05/17/2008, -2/+11Don't worry, they'll ruin it.
Have you ever checked out Reddit's content?
Have you ever read a Wired article?
I can almost guarantee you their fail will metastasize and infect ARS. - Anth, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9Damnit!!! ArsTechnica is my favorite site - its filled with smart people and interesting discussions. Sigh.
- scratt, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8NO I am very worried about this.
If that jackass Kahey has anything to do with Ars I will stop participating / reading it. - inactive, on 05/17/2008, -1/+9If gamespot is an indicator, than I am getting bad vibes about this.
- JoeVet, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8Too bad......ARS was a great site. Now that ARS is toast and Tom's sold out all that is left is Anand. Soon there will be no independent technology sites and we will be left with corporate propaganda.
- Banichi, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7According to Ken 'Caeser' Fisher earlier today on their IRC server the current Ars team will stay in place. This deal just means more funding for Ars so that they can expand and grow the site. It sounds like the creative team that has made Ars such a fantastic site will remain in place. I've been a member of the Ars forum for just about 9 years now and I really hope it's true. I'm glad to see the guys there who have invested their entire lives into the site (9 years later and Caeser still doesn't have the PhD he was working on when I joined) finally get their due.
- inactive, on 05/17/2008, -2/+8I'm gonna break someone's neck the next time I see that word.
- matriculated, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6I hope the forums are going to be the same.
- ngresonance, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7Good buy, yes, but I feel it may be more of a goodbye.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7You're not alone.
"Comscore says Ars Technica has just 1.5 million monthly unique visitors and 4 million page views, but our understanding is that the actual number of unique visitors to the site is around 4.5 million."
Lovin' it. AND... They're gonna' make a gadjillion dollars, you watch. - zephyr42, on 05/17/2008, -3/+8"4 hr 15 min ago, made popular 16 min ago"
I would normally agree with you, but this is pretty damn breaking though... especially on Digg. - sochee, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I just hate it when they say "Breaking", instead of "Breaking news" or just nothing at all...just looks stupid :
- neocr0n, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4From what I've seen "breaking" in journalism is generally used when all the facts aren't in yet and the story is still developing. This is a done deal and that article is packed with facts about it. The time frame has nothing to do with it, this is not breaking news, it's just news.
- AlexLand, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Undervalued at 25 mil?
- eean, on 05/17/2008, -2/+6You realize reddit doesn't have any writers...
I doubt it takes much money to run a site like Ars, it's not like the Wall Street Journal being acquired. It'll probably be run much the same. Suppose the big fear is that they try to target a broader audience. - raisputin3, on 05/17/2008, -2/+6Used to work for Condé Nast. Say goodbye to a good ARS
- roflbrothel, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4lol, why do I keep seeing that phrase in this thread?
Oh wait, I know why... :( - liquisoft, on 05/17/2008, -5/+8I think $25 million is an undervaluation, but I wouldn't know considering I know nothing of their revenue. I simply feel that it's a highly-respected tech blog, and acquiring something with so much footing and recognition requires one to take the non-monetary values into account (which I feel they did not do).
- inactive, on 05/17/2008, -2/+5Ars was/is one of the last footholds of anonymous smarts on the net.
If you don't think this is part of a concerted effort to turn stupid into the new smart on the net, then you should enjoy the content-less filler coming your way, disguised as intellect. - amida, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4I just came here for the comments about "Breaking."
- ileftfark, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3You realize Digg has the same content as Reddit, just a day later, right?
- fartbuttes, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3i'm so glad someone shares my sentiments. Ars is one of the few sites out there that I can count on to provide some actual insight or real news, while Wired is pretty much the opposite of that. *sigh*
- blup3ace, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4well they gotta catch up with CBS getting CNET.
- tech42er, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3$$ = the Benjamins?
- inactive, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Hey Farva what's the name of that restaurant with the funny ***** on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?
- antdude, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2It's all about $$.
- cr4wl3r, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I actually agree; it does seem kinda low for Ars. I think of tech blogs in three fashions:
-Gizmodo(&similar), the tech paparazzi, covers every random tech happening you can think of, but of generally lower quality then lets say Engadget;
-Engadget(&similar), well read and broad spectrum of articles;
-Ars, not nearly as many articles/posts per day compared to Giz or Engadget, but real, high-quality in-depth reviews.
Because of that level of quality I feel 25mil is undervalued. By how much im not sure, im not a Businessman, but it does seem cheap for their quality.
Digg me down if you want, just my opinion. - inactive, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2They do. 75% of the mergers fail to create value for both the investors and the customers.

should really say it all. - Philbert, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Me too.
- DeFex, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2nothing like a good flame war on the battlefront :D
- antdude, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Yes siree.
- renfield33, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2this sucks. i hope they don't kill the ars openforum. it's great for mac stuff and selling random crap.
- bamafun, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2There wasn't room to put news - and I really did just copy the techcrunch title but I bet I don't use it anymore .......
- ssj2119, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1What you said - yes
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah, pretty much.
