3. Bending Unit - ajpasl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"At Microsoft, researchers are working on the idea of “predestination.” They envision a software program that guesses where you are traveling based on previous trips, and then offers information that might be useful based on where the software thinks you are going."
Typical.
Microsoft Search Dog: "We think you might be heading to Wal-Mart again. Did you know there you can buy premium Microsoft software at amazingly low prices?"
"NO! For the love of God, I only went there once for toothpaste!"
Microsoft Search Dog: "Your search for 'toothpaste' returned seventeen results. Are you heading to Big Jim's Orthodontic Emporium? It's convenient to Waffle House, where today's specials are..."
"GET OUT."
"Looking to escape? Only thirty miles ahead of you is the renowned golf course and brasserie..."
...this'll replace the whale in my night-mares. - addw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I note that it says ''are developing ...'', please wake me up when they ''have developed''. These problems are harder than they look.
- randersontt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Brainy Robots start Stepping into Daily Life" ?!?
Academia isn't exactly "daily life" for most Americans, and since they "are developing" it isn't reality yet. So a better headline would be:
"America's brightest scientists are going to spend a decade and millions of dollars trying to develop a robot, that under perfect conditions, can assemble a bookcase that the average person can currently assemble for no charge in half an hour!"
I'll buy my first robot on my way home from picking up my new hovercraft! - 1337director, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1teh robotxx0rs! nice improvements, but seriously, HAL? I really don't think that's such a smart idea...
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"computer scientists are developing a robot that can use a hammer and a screwdriver to assemble an Ikea bookcase (a project beyond the reach of many humans)"
After how many hours of programming. I'm sure you could teach a human how to Assemble a bookshelf in less time. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We can always cover the sun B-|
- Leadhyena, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I for one welcome the Butlerian Jihad! Woo hoo.
Seriously, this is the wrong direction for AI. We should pursue augmented-reality solutions instead of these mindless tools that allow us to descend into the brain-atrophy of decadence. Let us control the tools, maybe with a bit of neural-net enhancement. It's better if we have absolute control of our technology instead of succeeding in building our violent and uncontrollable successors. - nshop2, on 02/24/2009, -0/+0Nice review... I liked it.

What's the betting that your new Ikea-building robot will be delivered to you in kit form? You then need a robot-building robot to build the Ikea-building robot! - Scigrex14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally we are seeing the fruits of AI. We might be soon living in a world that Asimov described in his Robot books. Though we just have to make sure that they do not take us over.
