- Trojan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bad news for two reasons:
1. Such a technically general patent impedes competition and forces companies to pay royalties for something that is...
2. So simple that it almost befuddles me that it can actually get a patent.
It's like me patenting cupholders in a car.
Yes, you cannot put a cylindrical tube with the purpose of holding beverages without getting my permission. I am the genius who simply put two technologies together. Woopdie doo. - kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and this deserves a patent because ? ...
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is complete *****. Not only has Airbus already implemented Wireless internet into their aircraft (A380 will be one), but all manner of aircraft will have this service in the future. The patent is total BS if you ask me.
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The USPTO is a scam.
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What an absolute joke.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Finally."
Not finally, because patents on something this broad SUCK. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So then I can file a patent for a wireless network on a cruise ship? Or on a blimp? This patent is just plain stupid. The technology being patented is the wireless network part; who cares where it is deployed. This is idiotic.
- Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would somebody please patent the frivolous patent?
- Bicster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hello? How is this different from the WLAN on cruise ships?
- twodogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agree, the patent system's only purpose is to tie up the court system.
WI-FI on a flight is cool, cell phone on a flight bad! - bruceyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"transmitter to victim distance"
WTF!!!? - scutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The US patent system long since serving any useful purpose. All it does now is impeed progress and cause fiascos like the RIM/NTP Blackberry thing.
- Weezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally indeed.
- skwid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, post the direct link, nobody cares about a blog ...
- jsanto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is it that the patent offices accept patents of "ideas" from entities that did not originate the idea? Before we know it, somebody Amazon might patent the idea of one-click. Wait a minute...didn't Xerox invent the mouse? Oh well, I'm going to the patent office to get my patent on the act of breathing in oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide!
- alexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is cool and all, but airlines should be making the wifi free. That would be huge draw for airlines. I know if I had a choice of airlines to take, I would take the one that would offer free wifi
- evanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it was pretty fast too... and also, the connection drops sometimes when the plane banks too far to the left or right...
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't give a ***** about the patents. I just want this to work, and be cheap.
Don't hold your breath though, most flights don't even have on-board power for laptops, a tech that has been around for years.
***** want you to watch thier crap paid programming on ***** little displays. - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0please link to the story not a blog
- slick_rick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from the article
"The RF characteristics of this wireless network are specifically tailored to meet applicable standards for electromagnetic compatibility with aircraft systems and RF exposure levels for passengers and flight crews." - intheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah...I call BS on the USPTO. But then again, I think that's what happens anytime a new patent makes the cover of /. or digg.
- Tomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Patent "Filed: June 11, 2001"
- evanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i was on an airbus (SAS airlines) and they offered wifi. however, the information packet said "connexion by boeing'.. pretty ironic
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn it i usually fly airbus
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Headset + WiFi + Laptop = VOip calls to friends and family while on plane.
WiFi should have been on *every* plane at least 2 years ago. - Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOOO! Not more patents!
- ihybridora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0patent. everybody is going patent crazy.
- Mdefoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm, this has been around for a while. The patent was in 2001 and I have a family member who works for the part of Boeing that supports this technology. Check out Connexion by Boeing. There are only a few companies supporting this, Lufhansa being one of the first. Boeing supports the towers on the ground, the airlines charge you for the usage. Don't blame Boeing for being smart.
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you going to walking around with your laptop on the plane?! Why not just provide Ethernet connections. More reliable, faster - no safety issues.
- LouieNet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Umm, this has been around for a while. The patent was in 2001 and I have a family member who works for the part of Boeing that supports this technology. Check out Connexion by Boeing."
http://www.connexionbyboeing.com/
I have a good friend who flew on many flights developing and testing the technology.
By the way, check out the patent text. It's not so much for "WiFi on planes" as for ground-to-satellite communication. - DiggerTheDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Method patenting is a very bad idea because the costs of licensing such patents are passed on to consumers.
I say, if you can't beat them then join htem. I have three to four good ideas on methods and I think I'm going to patent them, squat for a while and wait for pure profits to roll in.
Heck, if I can be a millionaire on the backs of the consumers then so be it. Every man for himself! - Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These patents get through because no one in the government knows a damn thing about a computer.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder how fast the internet will be.
- TacitusBen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is stupid, Scandinavian Airlines have offered onboard wifi for a year.
- l3ill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 This was discovered by this blog thats why i submitted it the way i did.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is called Boeing Connexion. I actually worked on the project for a while and it's really hard to imagine the difficulty in getting wireless internet to work well in a tin can like a plane. I'm not so sure about Airbus having the technology but the reason we haven't seen this in America is becuase of the crappy financial situation Airlines are in this country. Lots of overseas airlines already have this installed.
- el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here is the direct link to the USPTO instead of some dudes blog...
el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Link - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ANother stupid patent, but isn't this one pretty old. I've been on flights with wifi service as well, nothing new. But with the price of tickets, it should be free.
No digg due to this being old news. (on a side note, one thing that bothers me are the folks on digg who just digg based on headline, and not be reading the article. Completely defeats the purpose of digg in my opinion.) - seanabernethie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0That will be awsum if wat EmileVictor (3 said caus im booked on the first flight of the A380 from sydney to LA its was a complete coincidence that my travel aged booked the flight then to later find out that its on the A380 none of this economy either first KLASSS costs a prety peny but i earn enough heheheh not meaning to rub it in lol sorz

What is Digg?
