- PATSCRU, on 01/09/2008, -25/+143I scent bad grammar.
- Ajajadude, on 01/09/2008, -4/+83FTA: "Sony has been talking to retailers about the possibility of helping HD DVD owners who now wanted to move to Blu-ray."
Did I read that correctly? Are they actually considering this? I'm somewhat shocked! - DiggerDoombot, on 01/09/2008, -5/+73I bet Sony stock just shot up many scents.
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -5/+60That's nonscents.
- musleypope, on 01/09/2008, -7/+49Its going to be awhile before it's feasible for people to download high-def movies.
- xTRUMANx, on 01/09/2008, -1/+43Physical media won't go away for sometime since internet connectivity is not as widely available as video stores to people who buy videos (that is, the whole world).
- BinaryDelt, on 01/09/2008, -18/+57So close to being over...come on Blu!!!
Winning the format war will do wonders for PS3 sales. - theaverageidiot, on 01/09/2008, -4/+42Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony: "I never put up banners that say 'Mission Accomplished'," he said.
Hah. PS3. - DarkDx, on 01/09/2008, -14/+52I'm happy to see blu ray wining because it has more space so it will give you:
1) Better picture quality for long-ass movies.
2) More space for data storage.
Blu-ray makes unmcompressed sound in movies possible and that is awesome. - bbear, on 01/09/2008, -5/+37Cool. Now the 10 year battle of Bluray vs DVD can begin.
- jamin, on 01/09/2008, -4/+30scent:
transitive verb1 a: to perceive by the olfactory organs : smell b: to get or have an inkling of - schnikies79, on 01/09/2008, -4/+30Face it, the bandwidth just isn't there yet. Yes there are people who have fios and such, but thats not the majority by any means and won't be for a while.
DSL just became available in my area, and with a top speed of 1.5mbit. Cable isn't available here and I can bet that fiber will never be. A huge chunk of the united states is the same way. - Zain123, on 01/09/2008, -3/+28Scent is a verb too:
http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/scent - ferose333, on 01/09/2008, -5/+29Yes, finally the winner of the format war is visible, thanks to Warner Home Video.
- gamer31, on 01/09/2008, -2/+24I image what you did there.
- Barnolde, on 01/09/2008, -4/+24Digital distro isn't taking over for numerous reasons; lack of uniformity and high speeds are the main culprits.
For the guy with the Macworld comment, Apple is a part of the Blu-ray Disc Association. - chronichyjinx, on 01/09/2008, -4/+24Bad grammar day on digg?
- HydrogenOxide, on 01/09/2008, -5/+25You start downloading a 20 GB HD movie off the internet, I'll time you with my calender.
- zazzalicious, on 01/09/2008, -1/+20It's a commonly used expression in the UK. The BBC is a UK organisation. It is perfectly correct. I'm not sure what the US equivalent would be? Blu-ray supporters smell victory?
- triplehelix, on 01/09/2008, -4/+21you've obviously never watched a blu-ray movie on a 1080p set.
- triplehelix, on 01/09/2008, -2/+18liquid, it doesn't matter what services are offered. until most of the country has access to cheap broadband, its not a viable mainstream option.
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/09/2008, -0/+15I remember years ago reading about the technology when it was first being developed (in a magazine called T3. A tech mag from the UK). The goal was to eliminate the whole '2 disc collectors series' thing. They wanted movie studios to utilize the space on one disc rather than the extras over numerous discs. To be honest I never thought it would fly because DVD was so young and here I am buying my new movies on Blu Ray.
- Braingoo, on 01/09/2008, -9/+24My story goes, I bought an HD-DVD player Walmart $98 I bought quite a few movies with it and got some for Christmas, and will probably get more for my birthday in a few weeks. While I am sad at this recent news regarding its seeming demise. I will continue to support the format till it truly is dead. As for Blue-Ray if it becomes format of choice I will get a player eventually. So that being said sad to see the format I put my money into loose but if we get a standard out of this I think we really all win in the end.
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -11/+26I will "scent" victory when I can buy any movie I want on some format of HD. I don't care if it's Blue Ray or HDDVD.
- Malarie, on 01/09/2008, -11/+26Woots!!! I bought a PS3 today :)
- Lewisham, on 01/09/2008, -0/+14Apparently the Oxford English Dictionary disagrees with you. Although I agree it's not a very common usage, and looks wrong here, it is grammatically correct.
verb [ trans. ]
1 (usu. be scented with) impart a pleasant scent to : a glass of tea scented with lemon balm | [as adj. ] ( scented) scented soap.
2 discern by the sense of smell : a shark can scent blood from well over half a mile away.
• figurative sense the presence, existence, or imminence of : a commander who scented victory.
• sniff (the air) for a scent : the bull advanced, scenting the breeze at every step. - thatsmyaibo, on 01/09/2008, -4/+18Apparently 'most' of us didn't since the sales of Blu Ray are what pushed these recent developments. Maybe the techies on digg appreciated HD DVD, but the world doesn't revolve around you. The average customer doesn't have that much of a problem with Sony since their products are a reliable household name.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/09/2008, -1/+15The XBL content looks like ***** next to an HD disc. The movies on HD Disc are VC-1 or H.264 and are 15GB or more in size.
You can keep your mediocre 720p low data rate HD downloads, I want 1080p high rate discs. - Reaper2806, on 01/09/2008, -3/+16Why is everyone already getting into the "yay ps3" "ps3 sucks" "360 FTW" etc.
Anyone who has preconcieved notions about a product based on it's brand is an idiot. I'll say that again: An idiot.
I have a Sony Bravia HDTV.
I have an LG surround sound system.
I have a PS3 because I either looked at it as getting what was then the cheapest Blu-Ray player around, and a free games console, or a high powered games consoles with a free blu-ray player. That's not a high price, that's a bargain. Whatever you think about the games available or online features, that's a great bargain. It's a case of maths.
I also have a 360, and a Wii, because I'm greedy.
I've watched them carefully, and there have been no attacks by the consoles on each other. They live in harmony and do not get jealous or touchy if I switch one off. The PS3 doesn't mumble "Gates' whore" when I play some Halo.
They all offer different strong points, but none of them suck.
I'm glad blu-ray is winning the format war, not because I love Sony, I couldn't give a toss about them or their profits. It's because 1) I already have a blu-ray player and no HD-player, and 2) Format wars are bad for the consumer.
So in conclusion: Hurrah for the end of the war, in the same way pretty much everyone is happy that the fighting is over at the end of the war. Even the Germans must have been releaved after WWII. The fact that I was on the right side is just a bonus. - truspect0r, on 01/09/2008, -9/+22"Most of us bought HD DVD just out of spite for sony"
Dumb. - STARTSOMETHING, on 01/09/2008, -1/+12Panasonic, Samsung, etc make blue ray player's. Why do you think sony owns the blue ray format?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Associat ... - staticneuron, on 01/09/2008, -2/+13Really? Where are these magical 51 gb hd-dvd discs? Which movies are printed on them?
And you really need to study more about maximum bitrates (numerical aperature helps) before you even try to defend HD-DVD. The tech specs aren't hidden and they haven't changed from the get go. - nailer, on 01/09/2008, -0/+11I scent seventy people who don't know how to speak English.
- WhereAmI, on 01/09/2008, -0/+11Why are they irrelevant after MacWorld? Apple supports Blu ray...
- truspect0r, on 01/09/2008, -6/+16Like 7% of the marketshare going to change anything.
- elvenseven, on 01/09/2008, -4/+14Why didn't you stick with CD or the 3.5" disk?
- ChildeRoland420, on 01/09/2008, -0/+10That's retarded. Both formats have large Japanese companies backing them. But, Blu-Ray has more American film studios backing them.
- crawdad62, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9I can't believe this past week. I was right on the verge of buying a cheap HD-DVD player but couldn't find one locally at the price point I wanted and ended up just buying a up-converting Pioneer DVD player. Then all hell breaks out and the bottom drops out with all the HD-DVD defections.
That's not my typical luck. Normally this would've happened AFTER I bought my HD player. - staticneuron, on 01/09/2008, -1/+10Warner brothers and other studios DO NOT CARE about hardware players. All the see is that all year their Blu ray versions of their movies have been outselling the HD-DVD counterpart. I am sure they wouldn't even care if you built your own blu ray player or HD-DVD player. The movie houses care about content moved. Only fanboys fuss about hardware and how it is used. Get a life. Why don't you hop on the "digital downloads are the future" bandwagon with the rest of the surly and spiteful HD-DVD owners.
- NightOwl4, on 01/09/2008, -5/+14I'm sure it wont be hard for Microsoft to come out with an addition for the 360 that is a blu-ray player......
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9You guessed correctly.
- fantasticFlan, on 01/09/2008, -0/+8scent -verb
to perceive or recognize by or as if by the sense of smell: to scent trouble
It's not a mistake, just a less common usage of the word. - Brad324, on 01/09/2008, -0/+8can't even spell grammar nazi right.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/09/2008, -2/+10Packaging PS3s with free bluetooth blu-ray remotes and movies would be a good idea too. That, or buy a PS3 game, get a free blu-ray disc. Expand the reach past early adopters.
- ChildeRoland420, on 01/09/2008, -0/+8But they didn't, and we don't.
- magicite, on 01/09/2008, -9/+17Bahaha. You actually made me laugh with that comment. Troll.
- happyhappyhappy, on 01/09/2008, -3/+11"Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros Home Entertainment Group, said the decision to back Blu-ray exclusively had been driven by consumers. He said sales of the studio's movies on Blu-ray were outselling the same title on HD DVD by three to one. "
- WhereAmI, on 01/09/2008, -2/+9Because LIVE marketplace doesn't support downloading services.
- Barnolde, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7All HD DVDs were region free. Many BDs were as well, but certain companies used region locking.
- diggrim, on 01/09/2008, -0/+7because a 50GB disc for games is NOT a benefit?
