- BrandonMills, on 01/23/2008, -5/+177Warner Bros. seriously wounded HD-DVD
HD-DVD canceling their CES show entirely killed HD-DVD
It's like they admitted defeat then and there. - dgblackout, on 01/23/2008, -2/+134i'm just glad we can all just forget about which standard will win and start hacking away at the copy protection from the winner.
- rento, on 01/23/2008, -11/+133Ok now get all HD-DVD titles to BR, I am fed up of waiting for Transformers.
- morningmatters, on 01/23/2008, -6/+110It appears that the real winners from this whole battle are the late adapters of this technology.
- Ubergoober3, on 01/23/2008, -6/+107If Microsoft actually wanted HD-DVD to succeed they would bundle it with the 360 instead of making an $200 add on. Sony's support for Blu-ray with the PS3 gave it a clear advantage.
- Heaiser, on 01/23/2008, -2/+62While I agree competition is usually a good thing it isn't in this case. Having two formats lowers sales of both and keeps the cost high due to the uncertainty of the product. There will still be competition among studios to keep the prices low even with there being just 1 format. The only difference will be that consumers will start to buy them because they are no longer afraid of buying something that will become obsolete in a year.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/23/2008, -2/+50Same here, but I'm waiting for Children of Men. I was so pissed that I couldn't get it on BluRay.
- joshuajames, on 01/23/2008, -3/+46Looks like price isn't going to be much of an issue...
- mrosen310, on 01/23/2008, -25/+66i win i win i won i bought a ps3
- dyranios2, on 01/23/2008, -3/+38Dude...they're Robots in disguise!
- schoate09, on 01/23/2008, -10/+44I guess I made a good call getting a PS3, no?
- Retnuh730, on 01/23/2008, -2/+35Arent digital download HD movies like 15-20GB each and riddled with DRM? I'd rather have a physical copy with slightly less DRM, thank you.
- Shao00, on 01/23/2008, -15/+45Just pick a damn format already so i can jump in......If it's blueray, you would be stupid to not buy a ps3.....it would be a good excuse to get one as well :)
- robotsongs, on 01/23/2008, -3/+33Dude.
***** ginormous robots fighting other ***** ginormous robots.
Why the ***** *don't* you care about Transformers?! - sjbdallas, on 01/23/2008, -0/+24Which is usually the case. I'm not sure why anyone would want to be an early adopter when this crap keeps happening. I've still got a Pioneer laserdisc player in my closet.
- doctordbx, on 01/23/2008, -4/+28Makes me pretty happy to not be an early adopter.
(1) I don't have to get all smug over a format.
(2) I save a ton of cash.
(3) I avoid the hypocrisy of bashing one company for a root kit a while back only to be praising them today.
It's also fun to watch the fanbois fight it out like it will make a difference. - houndeyex, on 01/23/2008, -1/+250.45%?
- aqzman, on 01/23/2008, -11/+34I was rooting for HD-DVD, but it looks like Blu-Ray as taken this one.
- GodIsntReal, on 01/23/2008, -18/+40I almost feel bad for the people who wasted even a cent on anything HD-DVD related.
Wait... No i don't. Hahahahaha. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/23/2008, -0/+21I did the same thing with the PS2 when DVD was new.
- digggggggggg, on 01/23/2008, -0/+21Personally I like getting physical media when I have to pay money to get something.
- staticneuron, on 01/23/2008, -1/+22Don't bother, these are the people who like to talk about the here and now and are just going to be stuck with a silly look on their face a couple of years from now.
- Kusgam, on 01/23/2008, -3/+23Yeah, those blu-ray discs in your players will haxor your TVs.
- robotsongs, on 01/23/2008, -0/+19Don't forget, too, that the vast majority of US DSL broadband speeds suck ass, let alone DSL adoption rates, so the ability for everyone to easily and quickly download a HD movie just isn't there ye, nor will it be for the foreseeable future.
Also, my dad (and probably everybody else's too) wont want to have to learn how to get a movie on a computer-- buying a disc at BuyMore is a ton easier. - Philodox, on 01/23/2008, -3/+21Good for you. I don't suppose you've got your eyes checked out recently, have you? Because if you're in the group of people that can't tell the difference between a upscaled DVD and a Hi-Def dvd your eyes might be going.
If you're in the group of people that just doesn't care for the difference I hope you look forward hanging out with the seniors who wonder why sound had to be added to movies. - minorthreat, on 01/23/2008, -1/+18I still watch my laser disc
- MadScientist440, on 01/23/2008, -1/+18You only have one? I bet you have all the lines memorized by now.
- Kusgam, on 01/23/2008, -0/+16Most early adopters know about this technology and keep up with it.
The people that are uninformed about "profiles" are the ones that will buy after HDDVD is off the market. - kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -3/+19HD DVD media represented about 1% of all media sold by dollar value. At 1 year DVD did not represent as much, and was actually much more expensive.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/23/2008, -1/+16You're a dumbass, and shouldn't be telling anyone about basic economics.
Supply and demand. If they put out $40 movies, they're going to have so much supply, and no one's going to want to buy them. DVD prices didn't get to reasonable prices until around 4 or 5 years into it's life cycle...blu-rays been out for about a year and a half, and I haven't bought one movie over $30. The bigger the market is for blu-ray, the cheaper they'll deliver to consumers. - RoboDonut, on 01/23/2008, -2/+17That movie was the definition of a bad script.
- maley, on 01/23/2008, -1/+16I'm so sick of these comments. Do me a favor. Go work in an electronics store. Try to explain to people why they should buy a HDTV. Explain to them 480p, 720p, 1080i/p. Explain to them contrast and everything else. Then for HD content (btw you lost them about an hour ago while explaining), try explaining blu-ray vs hd-dvd. It doesn't work. The war is killing adoption rates. We need a unified format so we can move ahead.
- chingy1788, on 01/23/2008, -2/+16i hope those early adapters bought a PS3, since its only a little bit more than the bluray player and can be updated if the bluray standard changes
- Heaiser, on 01/23/2008, -1/+15But you still have studios competing to sell their movies. You're saying that the only thing that determines the price is the format and that is simply wrong.
- Mypam, on 01/23/2008, -12/+26Die, HD-DVD die...
- Linh, on 01/23/2008, -9/+23not really. HD DVD players are dirt cheap. Once again, content is king. You shift one major supply of high def movies to only bluray... who do you think is going to win?
I wanted to see HD DVD win, but regardless, I'm happy to see one die off and start pushing high def on one format, and hopefully driving the cost down some. - staticneuron, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13Not really? I would have seriously doubted getting an external BR player for my PS3. If BR wasn't included in the PS3's I would have been on the fence with alot of other people but since it came with the PS3 it automatically made me a supporter. The way I see it is that BR was a winner from the start technology wise. Disc space, aperature, butrate and I support the most technologically advanced new electronics but then HD DVD was out a year earlier and had really strong support from universal. I didn't want to be stuck with a losing format even though I think BR is better i wouldn't have invested in it.
It is very foolish to think that the built in BR did not affect the high def battle. Hell I probably would have bought an HD DVD if BR wasn't apart of my PS3.
Content was big winner but then again look at the companies on the BDA. - kingmanic, on 01/23/2008, -1/+14Just so you know. DVD has DRM too. DRM-ray? right....
- rusty123jimi, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13I don't know if you've heard this...but Bluray disks have a special coated plastic on them that resists scratching from happening. They're pretty damn durable disks if you ask me!
- Checkerd, on 01/23/2008, -10/+23Because it is one of the few movies that didn't take something from my childhood and beat it with the blunt end of a bad script.
- Kusgam, on 01/23/2008, -1/+14DVD replaced VHS, but no one really cared about "competition" with the DVD.
So, why is this any different? - HydrogenOxide, on 01/23/2008, -4/+17Three syllables.
Megan fox - TheXeno, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13Here's the difference: Offering Paramount 150 million in incentives prolonged the war. Warner's incentive ended it. That's why.
- TheXeno, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13THANK YOU! I've read so much lack of perspective on various technology boards that I was beginning to wonder. Every major technology had a humble beginning, from CDs to Cell phones, to DVDs. Glad someone out there understands projection. From the outset of what Sony included in their machine (blu-ray player), and announced that price, I couldn't help but wince, then shrug. That won them the war. If history has taught us anything, it's that all add-ons, all, have done poorly. If you want something to succeed, you build it in. Sony made a sacrifice, gave up something good, for something better. And we're just beginning to see what that "better" outcome will be through this year and into 2009 as HDTV adoption rates ramp up.
- illuzionmod, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13Apart from the PS3 which makes up a major part of the Blu-ray install base...oh and not to mention the 2.0 profile players that are going to be released.
Yea you're right nothing will support 2.0 - fallenone05, on 01/23/2008, -0/+13Me too, and Batman Begins and the Matrix!
- drsmith3, on 01/23/2008, -5/+17I should probably check Blu-Ray out. I was skeptical about the transition from VHS to DVD, and look how well the DVD industry has prospered. I suspect Blu-Ray is in some ways superior.
- sjbdallas, on 01/23/2008, -0/+12Agreed. They shot themselves in the foot and left us with no confidence. They should have reworked their presentation and touted all the benefits of going their way.
- ShugNinx21, on 01/23/2008, -0/+11Luckily Transformers are so kick ass that at least the movie is fun.
- aegis9975, on 01/23/2008, -3/+14Since the NPD only reports stand-alone players (no Xbox 360 HD-DVD drives or PS3s), I'm surprised that even before the Warner announcement that stand-alone HD-DVD players were going neck-and-neck with the expensive Blu-ray players. Especially being that HD-DVD players were being discounted at $99-199 and Blu-ray players cost over $300.
