- DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50inaccurate, the ENTIRE ARTICLE is how bittorrent.com fails at filtering torrents.
- KniteWulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28..Which is why you don't use Bittorrent's own website.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27..that's what DJ was saying
- rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23He did not create bittorrent to "pirate *****". There was a million and one ways to pirate software, movies, music, etc on the internet before bittorrent came along. What he wanted to do was create an http distribution based peer-to-peer file-sharing system and he succeeded. I seriously doubt he was saying "I can't wait to download Spiderman 2 after I finish writing this protocol and all of the prototype software!" That's just retarded.
I will take your advice and digg you down, however. - TimDub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10don't confuse the tool with its potential uses. the BT protocol was created as a means to distribute very large files with little to no bandwidth cost imposed on a single server. that's it. there are plenty of legitimate uses for BT; it's wrong to say that it was created just for the purpose of "pirating *****."
Heaven forbid Cohen tries to make some money with that which he created. if that means making a deal with **AA as opposed to getting sued into bankruptcy, then more power to him.
commence burial! - h0f5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yes its obvious. The thing is, the article talks about how the filtering is NOT happening. RTFA.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9uTorrent FTW?
but this isn't about the clients, it's about the search engines. there are countless torrent engines out there -- but I think Bit Che is the best (software-based) - Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Well, isn't this obvious? I mean, Bram Cohen struck a deal with the MPAA to remove all illegal movie content & filter it out and to make their movies available for download legally, so them allowing illegal content would be just stupid, and a dealbreaker to boot.
- generalbeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How is he using the program to 'pirate *****'?
- Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Although the original intent of BitTorrent was to create a distributed file transferring protocol/client, I do think it has become a haven for the illegal distribution of copyrighted material and that was not it's intended use. That said, Cohen's deal with the Motion Picture Association of America was not him selling out. BitTorrent is free software. Always has been. The deal has nothing to do with the client.
- Heavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6But guns sure help!
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Damn, Dan Glickman even looks evil...
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4As if µTorrent isn't the best Win32 client!
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because it isn't old to others who didn't know about this 'fact'.
- chris4buffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's wrong with uTorrent?
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I think Cohen created something that, well, accept it or not, transformed the way we transfer large files across the Internet. It's not his fault what others do with his software. It's not like he even reverse engineered or cracked some protection and we're trying to argue his case, he well and truly released an open source program that revolutionized file sharing and P2P.
- dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5u're right..
it isnt bloated - buckrogers1965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but I loved Dan Glickman as the Tall Man in the movie Phantasm.
It's great that the MPAA is there to give undertakers a second career. - xxrazor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is completely inaccurate to the description...why did it make the front page?
- Texel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2simply:
bittorrent.com != bittorrent protocol
inaccurate title. - OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! You idiots find a way to work Bush into everything. Give it a rest.
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Glickman is definitely not one of us. Somehow he looks more evil than Bush.
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still it is just a matter of time before this will work. And utorrent is probably next, because they own that too now. I wish there was a good win32 client that is open source. Too bad there's only Azureus (i used that for 6 months and i was quite happy about finding out utorrent back then)
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know the title/desc is screwballed, but your statement makes an interesting point.
Obviously, if bittorrent was being used for legal purposes, which is what piracy apologists always harp on, then this would be a good thing.
Instead, most of the users saw that, flipped, and make the statement of "well, why teh hell would you use that, use ". Which obviously shows that, what is bittorrent good for? Allowing kids to steal.. oh I'm sorry, gotta avoid the 'its not stealing, its infringement' police, download movies, software, music that they didn't pay for.
When a new Linux ISO comes out, bittorrent rocks, instead of hammering a server, you can get a nice steady download. That's a good use. More sites should have filters in place, so that bittorrent can shake off the teenage pirate crowd and get some legit press. - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ack... nevermind... digg me down
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just like abstinence only education "works" too...
*Whatever*. - h0f5, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9which brings us back to the fact why youre even using bitorrent and not azureus or utorrent.
- Tagskill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bitcomet.com FTW
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I like Azureus on Linux, and BitComet on Windows.. but wait this has nothing to do with clients! We are supposed to be talking about BitTorrent official search, not clients!
- JimDinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WTF?
- alexjordan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The entire article is based on a false premise: that the search for "Prison Break" will get 29 copyright infringing videos of the series. If you can be bothered to actually do that search, you should note that none of the files is large enough to contain any kind of video. So, what was the point of the article, again?
- JimDinger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I take it your still on those ***** public trackers?"sigh" poor poor man.BitTornado is banned on a lot of em now a days.
- PSPDS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1why would anybody in their right mind use that site. its slow. your better of to buy some stuff.
- alexjordan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1As I said below, none of the 29 results for "Prison Break" is really an infringing video. The whole article is nonsense unless the author can show real data.
- garbats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0µTorrent is my favorite client by far and this article is total BS.
As for searching for torrents, i just enter a search into google of "torrent [file name]" and then go to the search results from domains I recognize and trust. - PARAPA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0And how is this new news?
- DDRRE, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Sure does.
And BTW, the best client is BitTornado. - sponeil, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people. ;-)
- smartsingh24, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3@chris4buffy
it isn't azureus - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -32/+8Bram Cohen = Biggest sellout of 2006
Congrats douchebag
digg me down if you want, doesn't make it any less true, he made the program to pirate ***** and now he is helping to catch us all - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -47/+7It's the description on digg that's inaccurate, not the article.
