- 3210, on 11/25/2007, -2/+27It's good to see that this site is not folding so quick under the pressure from DC comics and Marvel and it's also nice to see that at least one comic book publisher is actually supporting them. Good luck to them in the future.
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/25/2007, -1/+22You know what? I buy comic books. I only started a little while ago, and ONLY because I COULD torrent old issues off ZCultFM. Comic books are so convoluted and actually hyperlink other comics (*See HULK GOES TO KINDERGARDEN #7), making the old comics available to new fans is a great way to get new people interested! It's a burden to want to get into a comic book and to go look at it, then realize you have to have read some random comic book years ago to get some statement someone said. I've bought all these comics and trade paperbacks lately only because of ZCultFM allowing me to read the old stuff that's not available for me to go back and buy. Keep it up, guys! You're making them way more money than they know (or they're willing to admit!).
- Puppetfunk, on 11/25/2007, -4/+24Comic books are too expensive to keep up with now adays. I mean 5 bucks for 12 pages of story and pictures? Not worth it.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -13/+29Take that Marvel and DC. You bunch of mutated, overgrown freaks!
- MackPrime, on 11/25/2007, -3/+18yeah, I'm not so sure about scans boosting sales...
- Ouze, on 11/25/2007, -3/+17Marvel & DC are sitting on a goldmine here. There is no real loss to the big 2 - the mass of the material traded on this site is back issues, which generate zero revenue for the company anyway. What they SHOULD do is allow the scans to continue, buy ads on the site, and then offer their own high-rez scans of back issues, drm free, in cbz format, on a pay-what-you-want format like Radiohead. Anything they make off this would be 100% pure profit.
- supremespleen, on 11/25/2007, -0/+12This is kind of sad. Whereas RIAA artists and MPAA movies are making huge obscene amounts of money already, the comic artists and authors aren't.
The only comics I've pirated are comics that haven't been out for years. - ren1999, on 11/25/2007, -1/+10Marvel and DC should now offer high quality .CBR scans of their own on fast servers distributed through bittorrent at an affordable price less the cost of paper and staples. They could even work with ISP's to allow a customer to pay their subscription with their Internet bill.
It is time to face the reality that people are going to file share and you can't stop them. You shouldn't fine them or imprison them. Just offer high quality downloads on fast servers through bittorrent yourself with your own non-popup advertising.
My own stuff gets pirated all the time. I don't care. Fans will find a way to donate money and do so through PayPal all the time. - nastajus, on 11/25/2007, -2/+10“Marvel has been demanding certain files from Z-Cult. Z-Cult pointed out that we do not in fact hold any of the files that Marvel have demanded we provide to them. If Marvel understood how BitTorrent works, they would realize this.”
Demanding files. What does Marvel exactly want, them to burn a disc and send them a copy in the mail? But first even they would need to be download it before it could be burned... This is idiotic. - iceman0113, on 11/25/2007, -1/+8I collect and buy comic books on a weekly basis. Comics are 2.99 and they do cost more if there are more pages, like the super-giant ones or annuals. I think the main reason why comic book prices have gone up, it's because of inflation. I think the 2.99 prices are roughly what people paid in the 50s for a book and out of 32 or 36 pages, about a third of it are ads, which is not bad.
- Barbarino, on 11/25/2007, -0/+7The files are "in the computer" Derek..
- D3koy, on 11/25/2007, -0/+7I can't afford to buy comics (not only price, but they take up a lot of space)
These days I only have the occasional Trade or graphic Novel... - Pic0, on 11/25/2007, -1/+8i didnt even know about this and now im interested in seeing what comics are on there
- Puppetfunk, on 11/25/2007, -1/+72.99? Where the ***** do you live? I pay 3.99 - 4.99 (don't remember) for a standard Ultimate Spiderman.
- D3koy, on 11/25/2007, -1/+7Us geeks...
- Icupnimpn2, on 11/25/2007, -9/+15Pirated mp3's drive the sale of albums. Pirated movies drive the sale of dvds. Pirated comics drive the sale of comic books. (I'm not convinced that pirated video games drive the sale of video games.)
Still, you can't fault a company for trying to protect their assets as legally entitled to under the law. If you don't agree with the law, get it changed. And if the law doesn't apply outside of the US, so be it. - a0me, on 11/25/2007, -0/+6I didn't know those existed either but why the *#!$$! are they not shipping outside the U.S.!
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+7Bleh I tried Z-Cult once. I downloaded every issue of Iron Man up until like 1999. And you know what? I deleted the damn thing. I found it strained my eyes to read comics on a monitor and it just wasn't the same. I still find more thrill going into a used comic shop and browsing around even if the issues I buy are all out of order. There is something about having the physical paper comic in your hand that a soul-less digital screen cannot replicate.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4They are still looking at buying an island. They just failed at getting Sealand.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+6Yes, but if comics were distributed via the Internet (preferably via BT), it could be more like $3 or $2, since there isn't any need to pay for printing, or meatspace distribution.
- Typhoon2009, on 11/25/2007, -2/+6I should start my own nation (a la Sealand) and claim I am under no jurisdiction from INTERPOL or laws other than that of my own nation. Then, I'll sell colocation spaces to torrent sites. Genius.
- iceman0113, on 11/25/2007, -1/+5It's on the cover, 2.99 for Ultimate anything and if you're paying more than that, I'm sorry to say that your shop is ripping you off. I have a couple 3.99 and 4.99 ones, but most of them are one shots and/or have 60 pages worth of art/story. 2.99 is standard cover price in CA and I would think everywhere else, because it's on the cover next to the barcode.
- Sabretou, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3I'll invade and take over your puny nation with my army of paintballers and sell to Google for a couple trillion bucks. :D
- Matt2k, on 11/25/2007, -3/+6Yeah. Zero revenue. You cheap bastards
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/104-7617175-8 ... - Vazel, on 11/25/2007, -2/+5Oh c'mon people pay for your comics the industry needs you. High comic sellers used to be counted in the millions but now they're counted in the tens of thousands. Especially stuff like Fables deserves your $$$ it's a masterpiece of a series.
- Dorepoll, on 11/25/2007, -1/+4Totally agree.
Besides, Marvel have their own online comic book service. No ***** they would try and protect it. - Matt2k, on 11/25/2007, -3/+6http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/104-7617175-8 ...
"Not available" to buy? Back issues are available NOW, at a reasonable price. I see 46 years of The Hulk going for $34.
Clearly you haven't tried all that hard, huh? How much else of what you wrote is anecdotal *****? - a0me, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3If you live in the US you could always buy the collected editions on DVD (check the Amazon links above) or buy digital versions through Marve Digital Comics and such.
- a0me, on 11/25/2007, -0/+3Sounds like a great deal... if you live in the U.S. (notice the shippings details: "item can be shipped only within the U.S.")
- hazard, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2The problem and possibly major cost of comics is in the distribution, it costs alot of money to run a comic store, and most are cluttered with toys and other hopes of revenue. Now if you could get a deal with Barnes and Nobles, that would be great! Or even better, charge $3 for regular issues online and $4 for events comics and Im sure people will buy every week. But that would be bad news for comic shops wouldn it? For the ones that havent closed down already and left readers out in the cold. But that's progress, welcome to the future!
- Matt2k, on 11/25/2007, -3/+5There's that link again:
http://www.amazon.com/Incredible-Hulk-Complete-Com ... - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -3/+5reading a comic off a screen is a pain for most people, unless you happen to have a tablet pc and even then the backlight causes eye strain and unless you have an OLPC which can work in the sunlight. Laptops, PSPs etc generally aren't as good, I tend to read regular books from my PSP but real books are still better and I think I might be causing myself eye strain. I might get an eee PC if they give the source code for the drivers out (I want Xubuntu not that Xandros crap, and don't want to rely on the drivers ASUS uses since they will only work with Xandros kernel builds), that would be an improvement for regular books but the screen size is still small for comics so there would be a lot of scrolling around if you consider the format comics are in.
I actually have trouble reading comics on my 24'' 1920x1200 Widescreen monitor since the scans are fairly big and the text in comics is fairly small, although I don't actually read a lot of comics (actually what I do read is manga anyway. Maybe if i rotated my monitor it would work but I would still be cramped in a chair staring into a bright monitor rather than laying down somewhere. - blazes816, on 11/25/2007, -1/+3I pay $2.99 as well.
- iDMG, on 11/25/2007, -1/+2Isn't that what TPB tried, and failed, at doing?
- zombies187, on 11/25/2007, -2/+3There are specific issues of the Hulk worth much more than 34$
- Falldog, on 11/25/2007, -1/+2I'm really glad Z-Cult's tracker is back up. It's been the best way for people like me, who don't have the money to purchase issues month after month, to follow characters and stories they enjoy. Hell, I was never really into comics that much until I happened upon Z-Cult.
The great thing is after the tracker was taken down visitors who never really post except once in a blue moon started coming out of the word work to mention how they too had been able to get back into the comics thanks to Z-Cult. - Ouze, on 11/25/2007, -1/+2wow, those are pretty sweet. I had no idea they even existed. that being said, they could lower the price, not have to move physical units, and sell online and advertise those for hardcore collectors. Why not open new revenue streams?
- phaed, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Everyone should visit www.eyemelt.com and check out what they have going on. Lets show them the power of an open distribution system.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+3He's a linuxtard,its understandable.
- Typhoon2009, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Aye, the Sealand deal didn't float (pardon the pun). Couldn't they just "locate" themselves in some shady eastern European country where they can just pay the local police some money to keep hush?
- swavalier711, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1I don't think I would download comics unless they were out of production. Usually they are cheap enough to warrant my cash.
- Swampthing, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1One small problem... hope you don't want anything recent. That collection ends in 2001 making it almost seven YEARS out of date. Plus it does not include any crossover issues or storylines, so as "complete" as they may describe it, it is not.
- Vazel, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Actually the comics industry has already gotten itself into Barnes and Nobles and other book stores in the form of TPBs.
- colto, on 11/25/2007, -2/+2How mature.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+2Idiot,Flash format
He said .cbr - Vazel, on 11/25/2007, -1/+1There is a digital archive legitimately available from Marvel of all the older Hulk issues. He just had his link wrong but he posted it again below me.
- theparttime, on 11/26/2007, -0/+0Just a hunch, but I bet scanned comics have turned a whole community of people back into comics or into comics for the first time. I'm not really sure what marvel, dc, and other publishers should do with the scanning community, but as a whole it definitely scanned comics have helped more than hurt.
- hexydes, on 11/25/2007, -5/+4When are you stupid entertainment companies going to understand what power you are basically throwing away by suing people for loving the content you produce, rather than exploiting it to the max to grow your user base and find yet unrealized revenue streams?
It's simply mind-boggling to read tale after tale of these companies trying to stop people from being interested in their content... - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -2/+1True reason comics have less pages than the old days is the artwork is more incredible and takes more time to produce unlike the silver age with the fast and loose crude drawings.
- a0me, on 11/25/2007, -3/+2http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/
Marvel is almost (?) there. -
