- devnill, on 10/12/2007, -8/+90Great news, BitComet is a great client for people who don't want to share. It should have no place in the bit torrent community
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+71Maybe it would make a difference if more than 3 people used BitTornado.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44good to hear but alittle too late imo, the real debate on bc was almost a year ago.
- Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43Good thing I switched to utorrent recently.
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Well that's why the majority of private torrent sites ban BitComet users. Not any public sites to my knowledge, though.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38it plays dirty and hurts the peformance of other peers.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31i used to use bitcomet, until recently i switched to utorrent.... i've tried azureus but never liked it. i actually had no idea bitcomet was so bad... but as far as it stealing bandwidth with out returning, i can tell you i get a much faster connection using utorrent, probably because i'm not banned from half the clients/trackers.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32He stole my name :(
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28RTFA
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24utorrent or else. give an inch and people will take a mile.
- corevette, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21how to block BitComet users in azureus: http://azcvsupdater.sourceforge.net/
download 'Stuffer'
add bitcomet to the client you want to block - BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24edit: Digg down (sorry)

I'll define "little" for you. Azureus uses way more memory than any client period. utorrent uses 6 MB on my system & 9Mb of VM. By the time you add in the java runtime & Azureus I was looking at 200-500 MB of memory Plus the VM it was using. Azureus has better plugins, loved that rssfeed one, but after many crashes and java problems, like it just being there for one I had too dumped it for utorrent. I don't miss it. I wish they would move Azureus away from java. YMMV - Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18uTorrent till something just as excellent that's also open-source shows up. :)
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19How is Azureus simple? It's quite literally the second most complicated BT client I've ever used (I believe Bits on Wheels is first, but I dunno)
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I used to use it but now i use utorrent when i download a torrent once in a blue moon. (every ubuntu release)
- a10waveracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10BitTornado used to be my favorite BT client. I'm glad to see that Shad0w has made this change in his client, even if I don't use it any more.
- clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I've never seen a private tracker that bans bitcomet, the only issue was that they used to share all files via DHCT or whatever so the private trackers ban anyone who shares outside their network. Bitcomet fixed this, and I've never heard any word otherwise. I've also NEVER seen a private tracker that doesn't tally up your up/down ratio, so even if you don't want to share...if you don't you get penelties. So really, who cares?
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Everyone who uses Torrentflux uses Bittornado
- mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8graemee: uTorrent has RSS :)
- WalkerBurgin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13uTorrent till I die.
- wto605, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Can't they make BitComet spoof the client then?
(I use uT, love it) - BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow... I use BitComet, never really knew this. I usually just set my upload rate to about 75kbps out of my 80kbps upload. Since I still need some for web browsing and such. I only used BitComet since I liked it's interface better than the rest, but I recently tried out uTorrent which everyone seems to like... wow. I was wondering why I'de be connected to a Torrent with like 5000% Health and get 1kbps while upload like 75 times more faster. Good thing they are trying to get rid of the "cheating" of it. *dugg
- Akiha_Tohno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My ISP has an odd way of 'dealing' with p2p including torrents. No matter which program (even online games or sending files via IM) uploads anything, both my download -and- upload speeds drop to about 1~2 kb/s. I've tested this on many different PCs and OSes, and they all have the same problem. The only way around this is to continually reset my connection, which gives me about five minutes of normal speeds before dropping back down again. When getting anything via torrent, I have to be there to do that resetting every few minutes. If I were to seed for any real length of time, i'd have to do that same thing for hours on end. I use uTorrent, which seems to handle my problem a little better than Azureus or BitComet ever did. I try to get things via HTTP as much as I can, but some things still require torrents, which is a major problem for me now.
I could change ISPs, yes, but they are even more restrictive when it comes to p2p. (One shuts you off if you use so much per day, despite stating you have unlimited bandwidth...) - bot001220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"All of the reasons you gave is exactly why i use bitcomet."
Hope you like being banned from some trackers. The only reason I use Azureus over utorrent is because it lets me block Bitcomet/Bitlord and all the other leeching clients from all my seeds from all the sites I visit; Pbay, nova, whatever. More and more people are finding out about it, and the community is fighting back. - RomulusX86, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18What did BitComet do that was bad? I have never used BitComet, was always a Azureus fan.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7^^^ zybch = User of Bitcomet ^^^
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I rarely see anything else than uT, Az and Mainline in my peers-list, so i don't really worry about this crappy clients anyways. If you've set up your client properly(ports etc) you don't need to cheat the system.
- blizzok, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@Elektriq
keep a copy of the exe, because since Bittorrent bought them, new releases will be laden with DRM - nazadus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I disagree.
I'm finding it harder and harder to get my ratio better.
I'm not saying I cheat the system, but I know this is becoming more of a problem for the bigger trackers that are private.
I'm currently only two private trackers. One of which I can reasonably keep my ratio (although it's getting harder and harder every week) and the other is almost impossible for me to get a good ratio on. I have to "donate" to get a a better ratio -- which I /hate/. I never mind donating to keep the tracker going. When they say they need money, I go out of my way to help. But when I have to donate /just/ to be able to use the thing. Well, *****, might as well call it 'paying' to use the tracker -- not donating, which I'm sure the IRS would love (based in US). I alot myself $50 a month for donations to projects. Some get a small amount, $5 or $10 -- but get it every month. Others get a bunch, but only rarely.
BitComet was my first client and I didn't know any better at the time. It wasn't until I started hearing other trackers bitch about it. I saw this coming and jumped to uTorrent, which rox0r5. I'm always able to top out my broadband speed, so I figured it would be even better if I were socially polite about it.
They need to find a real answer instead of banning clients. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've never run into one that bans Bitcomet, but then again I always mind my ul/dl ratio.
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yea, the ratio thing at private trackers keep most users honest in the long run, but in the short term, while the file is being share initailly by the uploader, bit comet clients will suck up most of the file, and not give back to other peers as much as its reporting to the super seed client. This makes super seed mode useless, where it used to be a great idea. I was able to upload a new file out to 110% and by the time I finished, nearly all the peers connected were seeds already. Now with the bit comet exploit, it have to seed to almost 200%, and there are only a handfull of seeds at that point.... which wastes my upload bandwidth, and slows down the distribution of the file to other peers. I recently switched to Azureus and use the stuffit plugin and ban all bit comet users, and now my seeding has really sped back up a lot. This has encouraged me to upload more, and the end result is more people sharing more files.
So, yea, it DOES matter how the clients behave. Also, to you invite beggars, I've signed your email up at a few 'interesting' spam sites. Better figure out how your spam filters work quickly, lol.
Stop begging for invites here, this is not the place for it. - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10plus he seems to have missed the boat on the fact that most versions of BitComet dont respect the pvt. flag when its set for DHT. This is the reason why torrents from pvt. sites started appearing on public sites and the public could leech them subsequently using the appropriate version of BitComet
- clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is really a user issue, if the user doesn't want to share he'll find a way not to share...sure this is considered an easier method of doing it but people will find ways with other clients. If his torrent thing didn't suck I'd download it just to leach with it until he realized that it's possible to do this with every client.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4doesn't his action hurt the torrent community more than bitcomet does?
- MajinZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Port forward then. After that any client will work as it should.
www.portforward.com - Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're lucky that they just drop your speed. Cox Cable out-and-out disconnects me from the Internet a few minutes after turning on a torrent. They don't simply throttle me, the connection flat out dies.
I've tested this situation for months. Enabling encryption in the client does not help. It can be a real pain in the ass. - KingMeatwad4th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never knew Bitcomet was so horrible with peers, always wondered why uploads were never the best. Although I belong to many private trackers and mind my download/upload speeds and always keep things seeded after down, I never knew. Just installed utorrent and it is awesome, I am going test out the web UI stuff later. looks sweet. Thank you diggers for getting me to switch over!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4im surprised people still use it
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep, that's my only problem with µtorrent. Fortunately it runs perfectly under wine. :)
(and that's alt+230 for the µ on Windows machines, in case you cared). - jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5BitTornado is lightning fast; but UTorrent is comparable.
- felderado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't find any proof of this in the current 0.3.18 release
I've been grepping it but i cant find anything that tells me this version is currently blocking BitComet users.
Can anyone help me out? - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2See the multiple recommendations. uTorrent FTW. You'll be glad you did. As will the rest of the community.
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*cough*
http://www.giganews.com
*cough* - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try enabling "lazy bitfield" in Azureus, that usually gets around the traffic-shaping attempts by ISPs.
- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Way to go. uTorrent next? I would love it. Now, BitComet developers, release a fixed version and play fair.
- joltjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh *****, I use bitcomet, I guess I should stop.
- thatrez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what is his stance on BitTyrant?
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, does anybody actually use Bram Cohen's original BitTorrent client anymore? That's what I have, but I don't d/l much.
- kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some people prefer a light, bare client. Most people, however, prefer clients which resemble download managers. Hence the popularity of BitComet, uTorrent and Azureus.
