- svivian, on 09/23/2009, -14/+51Bing only has more searches than Google because you find what you need first time with Google.
- Myztry, on 09/23/2009, -14/+35So starting from a 90% (Windows install base) share, they get about 9% redirected (live search, msn search, etc.) from people who are incapable of changing their Windows/IE default search engine. Then by secretly injecting Bing as a secondary home page in Internet Properties for Internet Explorer they get another 1% who don't know where it's coming from.
The amusing things is the Yahoo bribe will bring in more redirected search than Bing itself. Then they're all out of redirect, and people just keep changing the search providers pushed upon them to something of their own choosing.
It's all quite funny to watch Microsoft's marketeers trying to make something out of nothing. - kylescousin, on 09/23/2009, -15/+36If Bing has something superior to Google, Google will catch up and do better in no time.
- Nelagster, on 09/23/2009, -6/+21I wasn't even sure what Bing was so I Googled it
- crackercho, on 09/23/2009, -8/+22I tried using Bing once. I searched for the term "boobs" and got : "The search boobs may return sexually explicit content."
Haven't used it since. - yocouchdigga, on 09/23/2009, -3/+17"I think it will be another couple of quarters before we can tell if Bing will be a serious competitor for Google search," - With as widespread as google is and the trust in its brand, a "couple of quarters" seems like a pretty conservative estimate. Microsoft definitely has their work cut out for them...
- Frostek, on 09/23/2009, -12/+24I'll bet this 10% figure is US-only, as I can't imagine anyone else using Bing in such numbers.
Buried for inaccuracy. - ddorent, on 09/23/2009, -21/+33bing works great
- ddhillon, on 09/23/2009, -5/+15Why don't people talk same way about Google? How about injecting google through firefox as default search engine?
- achansen121, on 09/23/2009, -8/+15I've been using it to piss off my friend who works for Google, but it's actually a good search engine too. Because of the loyalty to google, I'm sure it'll be a long time before the average consumer even notices them.
- diggydougie, on 09/23/2009, -7/+14Don't care. Google is magic and that's all that matters.
- Mateo2, on 09/23/2009, -0/+6Great, more competition means even better search.
- operator99, on 09/23/2009, -2/+8What I have found as a blogger who uses blogger.com, a Google "company", I can tell you that Bing doesn't seem to know that blogspot (blogger.com) exists. My blog, which I won't pimp, covers some fairly esoteric subjects. When I Google the subject, I usually end up on the first page because there are very few others sites/blogs, etc. that cover the subject. On Bing, same search, not found after 10 pages. Two things, Google may pump up blogspot posts, but for sure, at least so far, blogspot seems to be mia on Bing.
- disappointed, on 09/23/2009, -1/+6People disagreed with his opinion?
- disappointed, on 09/23/2009, -2/+7Because Google has enormous market share in spite of the fact that most people are using an operating system and browser written by it's main rival. Google got where it is by being the best. Well, better than Yahoo! anyway.
Microsoft, on the other hand, is leveraging it's OS monopoly to gain ground in search, just as it did with it's office suite, it's media player, it's email program and it's browser.
Some of us have more respect for success earned than success inherited.
(of course, Google has been trying to use it's search monopoly to leverage it's other products so... what you gonna do?) - Sveglio, on 09/23/2009, -7/+12I like Google, but I think Bing is worthwhile too, and deserves more.
- cjmnews, on 09/23/2009, -4/+9You may not be getting the results you expect. Someone found that the results were skewed toward microsoft and against Apple: http://advice.cio.com/shane_oneill/bing_search_tai ...
- disappointed, on 09/23/2009, -0/+4More likely, if Bing gains significant market share, people will work out how to spam it's results the way they did with Google.
- JoeParanoid, on 09/23/2009, -5/+9As a professional researcher, I can tell you that Bing sucks as a search engine. And the popups are really annoying (as are their commercials). It's sort of the "internet for dummies" version.
- Myztry, on 09/24/2009, -1/+5"Then by secretly injecting Bing as a secondary home page in Internet Properties for Internet Explorer they get another 1% who don't know where it's coming from."
That's a trick that hadn't been pulled prior to Bing. I called it a ~1% overall market share increase. You call it a 22% increase over Microsoft's 9% (or whatever) market share. You're phrasing was covered too.
"It's all quite funny to watch Microsoft's marketeers trying to make something out of nothing." - linuxpenguin, on 09/24/2009, -0/+4Actually, it will only force one of them to improve. :)
(Just kidding! Hopefully anyways - hopefully someone will be able to avoid pulling out their checkbook this time around.) - Mateo2, on 09/23/2009, -2/+6Stop using IE.
- JohnFrum, on 09/23/2009, -2/+6And I really like the daily pictures.
- preppypoof, on 09/23/2009, -3/+7not to be "that guy", but a much better article on this same subject was on digg about a week ago.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-10354394-75.html ... - SupaFlyTNT, on 09/23/2009, -3/+7Microsoft/Bings Cashback program is what has me using Bing a few more times than Google lately for purchasing stuff. Before I buy anything anymore i always check what cashback is available on Bing.
- supermanred, on 09/24/2009, -2/+5This is only because of automated or severely encouraged Internet Explorer updates. Give it a few months for all the grandchildren to go to grandmas and say "Grandma, let me fix your search for you" and put the default search back to google.
- JediPilot, on 09/24/2009, -1/+4Bing's video search is amazing.
- Smegzor, on 09/23/2009, -1/+4You forgot irrelevant.
- dudefaceguyman, on 09/23/2009, -2/+5Agreed, but I only have one problem with it... Lack of Gmail. While I prefer Bing's search results, Google's are decent enough that I can live with em for Gmail (not to mention their web application stuff I occasionally use). Hotmail is atrociously bloated whenever I try to use it..
I tried the whole "put gmail icon on bookmark bar and use bing for search" but it's just more natural for me to have everything on one page. Damn my laziness.. =/ - TVarmy, on 09/23/2009, -2/+5There's less of a conflict of interest, since Firefox isn't made by Google. However, Mozilla does get Adsense revenue if you keep the homepage set to the Firefox Google page, IIRC.
It's a shame there aren't any decentralized, open source search engines that don't suck (as far as I know). That way, computer manufacturers and OS/browser developers could make a corporation-agnostic choice in the search engine wars. It'd be like bit torrent, but for indexing webpages. - runeasgar, on 09/24/2009, -1/+4I have to test in IE. Not an option.
I use Safari. - MWeather, on 09/24/2009, -0/+3How are those results unexpected?
- Rekutyn, on 09/23/2009, -4/+6All they had to do was advertise that they are giving away money/coupons towards your purchase! Paying $10 per search is a BARGAIN Microsoft... For the sake of their shareholders I certainly hope they have a better long-term strategy than this :|
- divinediva, on 09/23/2009, -40/+42Bing is an excellent search engine.
- MrRtd, on 09/24/2009, -0/+2from what I've found comparing the two, is whatever you find on bing, you'll also find on Google. Usually what I'm looking for I'll find it on the first page of Google, and sometimes on the second page. Rarely do I have to go to page three.
I'm not saying Bing results are bad, I just don't see the need to switch. - reptarman, on 09/23/2009, -5/+7Google is taking over the market. Ever hear of competition in the marketplace? Well, here it is. Bing vs Google will force the two to compete for customers. This will force them both to improve.
- bugalou, on 09/24/2009, -1/+3This has been the excuse since Bing has starting gaining ground. While still valid, It is quickly becoming a tired argument and won't hold up. Live search would be much higher than it is if that was the sole reason Microsoft gained ground with search engines. You have to admit Google's results have become spam-o-rific more and more too. (Be that Google's fault or not). People's blind loyalty to companies sometimes baffles me. As mentioned, competition is good. Bing must get credit where it is due too. It is the best and only real alternative to Google that has come out.
I use Google 80% of the time too so please don't think I am being fan-boyish. - hoju7887, on 09/23/2009, -2/+3You stated your own opinion without putting anything else down. I don't know why you're getting dugg down so much
- runeasgar, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2I never set it to use Bing. Ever.
- inajeep, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Sounds like you have some issues you having tapped into yet.
- GodKira, on 09/23/2009, -9/+10Bing, I'm happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but google had one of the best search engines of all time! Of All Time!
- Megor, on 09/23/2009, -4/+5Except the market share has been increasing since they started bing, Windows has been like this forever so it does not explain a 22% increase in usage.
- ColonelSlanders, on 09/23/2009, -4/+5i'm confused... is this good or bad??
- silencerider151, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1And is a good replacement for when Google is down or slow. That is the reason why I have been using Bing a decent amount lately. Sometimes Google just won't load.
- Grazzit, on 09/24/2009, -1/+2the background picture is really the only major difference i notice between google and bing
- Megor, on 09/23/2009, -2/+2Doesn't anyone use metacrawler anymore?
- mysticpickle, on 09/24/2009, -6/+6Buried for Micro$oft propaganda
- appleseed1234, on 09/23/2009, -4/+3Better than Cuil, but still too soon to tell.
- nightmyst999, on 09/23/2009, -7/+5...for porn.
