- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -14/+184I don't understand why so many people dislike Bill Gates simply because he has one of the most successful companys and a crapload of cash. I mean seriously, he's just a coder who dropped out of college to follow a dream, and look where he ended up.
Microsoft may make some moves that people dislike, but it's apparent and obvious the directions they are taking are the ones necessary to progress in the business. They are only doing what is a necessity and within interest of the corp. to keep it alive. This is what businesses do - they make MONEY! - firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -25/+185I agree with Dabellah.
All this hate for bill gates is from narrow-minded iFanboys. Here's the reality:
In 50 years, Bill Gates will be remembered for the humanitarian impact he left...helping hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people in third world countries to live and have better lives. By the time it's all over, he will have given more to charity than anyone else on the face of this earth. He and his wife will have directly saved more lives than anyone else who has ever lived on the earth.
In 50 years, Steve Jobs will be remembered for creating the Mac and the iPod. 2 consumer gadgets. BIG *****.
live with that, you ***** fanboys. - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -15/+136It's a shame Bill Gates will never die, but rather his soul will live on in a hulking goliath cyborg, with lazer beam eyes, chain saw hands, and chest mounted heat seaking missles.
- muvment256, on 10/12/2007, -2/+96Warren Buffet is awesome. He said that he wants to give his children "enough money to do anything but not enough to do nothing"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+97Right on. I wish more billionaires were this generous.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+77Warren Buffett anyone?
- vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66Interesting Gates anecdote from a magazine article about the Gates foundation:
Gates began to approach scientists for advice. One of them, William Foege, is a former director of the C.D.C. and one of the country's most experienced public-health officials. I ran into Foege not long ago and asked him about his first encounters with Gates. He laughed and said, "The guy came to me and said he wanted to learn about public health and he wanted to help. Do you know how many times before I have heard those sorts of things? Rich people say that all the time. I gave him a list of eighty-two books. I saw him a couple of months after that and I asked, 'How are you doing on those books? And he said, 'Well, I have been so damn busy I have read only nineteen of them.' I still didn't know whether to believe him, so I asked, 'Which was your favorite?' He didn't hesitate for a second. 'That 1993 World Bank report was just super,' he told me. 'I read it twice.' " By then, Foege had signed on as an adviser to the foundation. He now splits his time between Seattle and Atlanta. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+68Yes, good on the Gates & Buffett. I don't care how much people bag on Gates, I believe history will remember him as a humanitarian first, and a software/businessman second.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+58I know Bill Gates gets a lot of ***** on this site, but I think that in person, he is a really, really nice guy.
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49What if he BSODs?
- stevemur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45"as much as i don't like the dude really you can't knock what he is doing here"
Why does everyone always feel the need to qualify their statements with respect to this couple's historic generosity?
Sure, computers are important. Software is important. Fair competition is important. Some people think MSFT competed fairly and was simply first to market in a natural monopoly market (operating systems) with the best initial offering, and many other people disagree. Some people think they are still innovative (and they cite the creation of HttpRequest, the underlying technology behind AJAX, which actualy first appeared in Internet Explorer, they also cite live broadband online gaming with consoles, etc.). Some people go the other extreme and say that Microsoft only copies things.
But forget about all that. This isn't about software debates. This isn't about Apple fanboys vs. Linux fanboys vs. Microsoft fanboys.
This is, perhaps, the single largest philanthropic organization the world has ever seen, quite likely in either real or nominal terms. And it is certainly the largest philanthropic organization in our lifetimes. Period. No qualifications.
Gates' fortune, plus Buffett's fortune, dedicated to things like eradicating the developing world of deadly diseases, will have a HUGE impact on many more things that -- dare I say it -- are even more important than whether ubuntu is better than Windows, or the cathedral or the bazaar will ultimately win.
Let's not qualify our responses. Let's NOT say "sure, this is fine, but...".
Let's, for once, say... This is FANTASTIC. This is historic. This is generosity on a scale that will never again be seen in our lifetimes. This will challenge all the super-wealthy (and even us lesser folks) to do a tally of what's really important in life. That is, life itself.
Congratulations to Bill & Melinda.
(fair disclosure -- I was with MSFT from '91-97 and am still a fan of the company, and have the pleasure of knowing Bill, Melinda, and Patty Stonesifer, head of the Gates Foundation.) - GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38I think most of the Bill Gates is evil stuff on tech sites is for the most part just kidding around. Sure, not everyone agrees with Microsoft's business model and not everyone likes Windows, but Gates does a lot for the world through charity, and that's admirable. We need more wealthy people to follow his example.
- toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Once you break the $x million mark you don't care about how she looks, you just want to be happy. Usually when you have that kind of wealth you are too smart to go with the hotties who will spend your fortune in a minute but rather go for the girl you actually love.
/lust isnt love - SwankRock3000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38I prefer giving to the Stephen and Melinda Gates Foundation.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation partially funded my school!
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34"MS stabs its partners in the back."
So does Google!
I guess we know what MS 2.0 looks like!
With all their riches, the Google boys haven't donated 1/10000 of the money Gates had donated by this point in his career. - TNHitokiri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Bill Gates has helped out more people in need than he screwed over.. The only people he screwed over have perfectly fine lives (xerox or his roommate or whatever bs people say about him stealing DOS)
Do not compare this with Microsoft.. At Microsoft, Bill Gates was a businessman, obviously trying to rake in the cash
But that was his job; he's doing this all selflessly.. more people need to learn to be selfless - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25"Beauty is only skin deep."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Hot women are not usually smart enough, strong willed enough, and good hearted enough to even stand in the presence of someone as genius as Gatezilla
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Bill Gates is the ***** man. He may be ruthless with his competition but he's obviously a humanitarian at heart
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19/sarcasm doesn't immediately make something "unfunny" into "funny".
The odd bit was his previous comment was insightful reading. /boggle - MrBrenner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16One of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation's generous school reform grants has allowed the high school where I work to engage in some truly amazing teaching. I know that my educational practice has greatly improved thanks to professional development paid for by this grant, and many of my colleagues feel the same way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The Waltons aren't charitable for Sh*t
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Just hit him with a virus, and he'll die.
- mattn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14What? It's not a responsibility. It's his money. He's charitable because he wants to be, and that's great. But really saying that it's his responsibility to is ridiculous and it downplays what he's doing. It changes it from him doing something great to him just doing something he should do anyways. I know you mean well, but damn.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I bet she's a fox in the sack.
- notmark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Your comment is severely misinformed at best, destructive at worst. The only type of medicine that we KNOW works is vaccination. Everything else is guess and check, depending on the patient. And the worries about mercury thimerosal have been exaggerated by people who don't realize that US vaccines, excepting for influenza, haven't had mercury thimerosal in them since 1999. And do you think Bill Gates doesn't know this? Do you think he hasn't researched and made sure that the vaccines he's buying don't contain such substances? He's an intelligent man, and he's not going to send poison across time zones in order to look good. That's just asinine.
- toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15um... dont we live in a capitalist society?
Sen. McCarthy would have a field day with you. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Are you kidding me? She's lovely!
- Iandefor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16"Oh come on guys, does he really need to add the /sarcasm bit?"
Unfortunately, it appears so. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Bieng a borg doesn't mean you aren't human. Didn't Locutus teach us anything?
- orwellian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The Waltons are cheap and grasping for every nickle they can get there hands on .....they will never give up control Of Wal mart that would mean selling there stock and that will never happen ! Long live confiscatory inheritance taxes!
- anchorboi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15If you want to help the US, raise the average IQ by killing yourself.
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Uhhh... Hate to break it to you but tax havens are generally for *increasing* the amount of money you have. Giving it all away would rather defeat the purpose.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9hahaha, that's how I read it at first too. But I'm sure what it really means is "Within the 50 years following their deaths" ;-)
- nmweiler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I didn't know Tom Cruise was a digg user.
Go preach your anti-vaccination scientology crap elsewhere.
Don't vaccinate yourself or your kids then. See if anyone will miss you.
He's doing a great thing, yet some people will always find something to bitch about. Does it matter if he's doing it to improve his image? Does it matter if he's doing it because maybe he's a just a good person? Or maybe he's doing it because he's feeling guilty about having so much? Hell, I don't care if he's doing it because he sold his soul to the devil and is trying to buy it back.
You see it doesn't matter why he's doing it! He's doing something that all of us digg users combined wouldn't be able to accomplish. Of course you can knock what he is doing. It's pretty easy when you know that you'll never be in his position to decide who to help. Believe it or not, but 44 billion won't fix all the world's problems. Be thankful that someone is helping these people. He's not a saint, but neither are you. I'm sure you won't be donating all your money to help humanity when you die. Give the guy a break. - hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well it's his money...so shouldn't he do what he wants? Separate from that you're overlooking the fact that helping fight AIDS in Africa will have an impact on the US. For one thing it's an international problem, for another the future of Africa can have a major impact on the world for good or ill.
I don't like Microsoft. They do an adequate job at many things, but they really should do more in the way of extending technologies. A good example is the Zune. They could have done something besides another music player, but they did another music player. I will give them credit for trying some new things with it, but ultimately they should have done something different entirely. The same can be said for a lot of other moves they've made.
The problem is, once a company (or government/nation) reaches a certain size it becomes difficult to try new things. Bill Gates should recognize the relationship between business and programming data structures and make the appropriate changes to his organization to solve this. If he can leave Microsoft with a new direction and a new methodology that will filter into the larger business community/economy, that will be far more of a legacy than simply giving away money. - hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is the problem we face with the modern capitalist system: you seem to suggest you support Microsoft because you wish to actively avoid their competitors' products. That attitude is exactly the sentiment of a large number of voters: they are voting against the people they dislike. We need alternatives we are for, and not just something to be against.
- Cyggie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Saw this on the Dilbert blog... http://www.billgatesforpresident.net
Heck... I'll vote for him... at least he get ***** done! (There might be a few delays, but it's still better than what we have in the office today... :) - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Or into a Roomba
- mulling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Uh, from what I understand he's been using a Mac for years.
MS has been producing software for Apple for a long time. Excel debuted on a Mac and wasn't available on Windows until two years later. - harlowsmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They do give a lot within the United States. You can get details of how much and for what on the Foundation's web site, if you wish to cease being an idiot.
- windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10or make him use IE.
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I agree with the kidding around comment. It is traditional for Penguins to mock Gates but he is a kind hearted Geek/Suit hybrid. I am sure most of us would find him OK.
Anyone putting back into the world community has the right attitude. In fact I have a suspicion when no one is looking . . . and he is alone with his laptop . . . he secretly codes for Open Source projects . . .
. . . well OK maybe not in this dimension . . . - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I love Bill Gates. This is why.
He's SUCH an awesome dude. :) - exsst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think its all pretty much ***** and corrupt everywhere you look. Microsoft is a large company, but they didn't make world problems.
It is the infrastructure to let corruption slip through the net too easily, it is the governments and human clashes which will always occur that is the problem, but that's not to say a better form of government wouldn't help solve a lot of problems we are facing today.
We shouldn't be researching vaccines into viruses, we should be researching the cause of it. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8He wont be much of a threat, in the height of combat he will probably just crash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I bet he only uses it to run windows though :)
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For all their ills, Notig, do you really believe vaccines have had no benefit to our industrialized society? And besides, the Gates Foundation does a lot more than just advocate vaccination. They are involved in a wide array of health and humanities interests, world wide. Perhaps their funding could help to make BETTER vaccines? No, you'd rather send the cash off to the African governments, and let them "manufacture" better economies and magically their stunning health crisis will disappear, huh? OK.
