- acontorer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55I know it's just colorful writing, but people, Bill Gates isn't Microsoft. He owns only a fraction of the company. When MS writes a check, that's not the same as Gates writing a check.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+31I am dissapointed in today's PC community... almost everyone uses MS, and most of them curse and hate MS and Bill Gates. Many people want to kill Microsoft in some way... All I can say to them is go f*** yourself. Sorry for being rude, but what the hell. If you love Linux, then go install your printer drivers on linux and STFU, I wish you luck with that. If you love Mac, good for you! I wander how would you live in this world without MS. And my biggest problem is that MS is trying. Noone apreciates those little free programs like Windows media encoder, Movie Maker, Photostory and etc. that MS makes available for people. Apple introduces new Imac and from the way Jobs speaks it looks like photobooth is the main reason for upgrading... Please take some time to apreciate what you have. And stop jumping on those who are trying to fix their mistakes.

- jumanous, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19This is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, it just has the most useable, and best operating system out there. If anyone should be attacked for monopolistic practices it is mac, with their proprietry mov header (which is just bloody mp4) which can't be played in any other player other than quicktime.
Bloody tall poppy syndrome *****. - DannySpace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7LOL, Ok hehe... If this were accurate; I can just Imagine exactly how it would go down:
COURT: "Mr. Gates. I hereby order you to Pay the sum of $350 million dollars!" (smacks gable down)
BILL GATES: "Do you take cash?" (reaches into pocket) - joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't get all the Microsoft hate that goes around. I'm smart enough to install Linux if I wanted to, but the fact is that I don't want to. It's not worth the effort. My time is more valuable to me than the money it costs to buy commercial software.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you didn't buy a computer with it pre-installed, you are entitled to nothing. If you did (and I might mention the article says no proof necessary for individuals *wink*) then you are entitled to claim no more than 5 computers. But... seeing as how you chose "corporate" edition to install on 6 computers at your *home* would raises my eyebrows in suspicion. Be weary of the "sign up" process. =P

The same thing is going on here in LA. Recently I got a letter in the mail from Verizon saying I will get $17 off my bill as part of a class action settlement, provided I don't "opt-out". I looked into it and found that as part of the class settlement, I cannot sue Verizon for the same issue again after my account is credited the $17, even though I never willfully joined in the class action. I also found that the lawyers did very well, making about 10 million dollars on the settlement, a pretty million for each partner in the firm is my guess. For the most part, I tend to be cynical and think these class actions are a sham benefiting lawyers much more than any 'class' of consumers. - Takumi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bascially, its horses for courses.
I use a combination of all three OSX, MS and linux (as a server).
I think they all have ups and downs, but not one can deliver everything that everyone wants, so just relax by a Intel Mac and you can now run all three! - helfire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Happened in minnesota a while ago, friend gota few hundred bux since he had so many licences for win98 and such. As far as including media player. It is one of the more stable players out there and supports all of the codecs I throw at it... If you dont like it, re-associate your file playing extensions to a player of your choice. Or be forced to by default with Real Player and Quicktime. (Always check mime settings) :) - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ha, I think that goes without saying. Ignoring the fact that the direct object of that sentence magically morphed from plural to singular, that's all fine and dandy if your friend(s?) do that. The fact remains, a large portion of the Digg demographic tends to keep their machines up to date with recent, if not the newest, hardware technology. Be it for gaming, video/audio editing, multimedia whatever, the more people know about their computers the more things they know how to do one them.
I'd also be willing to bet that a healthy chunk of these people are also on a budget, especially those who do not have a steady source of income. I find myself in this group, as I know there is no way I could have possibly afforded the Opteron machine with registered ECC RAM I have now if I did not order the parts separately and build it myself. I know I saved at least $200, probably closer to $500 or higher, building it myself. Again, this is probably true for many people here.
Also, there's the issue proprietary cases and power supplies. Many, but not all, OEM Wintel builders use cases with a proprietary PSU design that forces you to either pay a premium at a third-party vendor if it fails, or send it back to your OEM (assuming it's still under warranty). I don't know where you get the notion that "store bought computers" never fail, but that's rediculous: when they do, it's much more of a hassle to deal with repairing. I don't think I need to explain why this is an obvious negative aspect of buying a prebuilt machine. Also, not everyone uses Windows(TM) and therefore would not like to automatically have to pay for an operating system they do not want to use.
And I definitely don't think that multiple packages in the mail is such a negative aspect or hassle when it comes to saving money. - joshduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, thankyou for that mature comment.
I have used Linux recently, only briefly though. I was surprised that it was quite easy to use, compared to my previous experience with Linux. However installing a distro from a CD is just the first step to setting up a system. I'd still have to search for drivers for all my hardware, find alternatives to all my programs and take care of maintaining my system and applications.
Windows caters to the lowest common denominator, but that means that it just works. I then have time to actually use the system for work or, er, browsing Digg. If you're not an idiot then you don't have to worry about viruses and worms infecting your system either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet that there is some lawyers who made a killing off of this!
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly, the tall poppy syndrome. Everyone guns for the one at the top. It's sad, really. :(
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is ***** stupid. I don't consider 90 bucks OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102059 or 200 bucks retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837116193 to be overcharging.
I know OSX is $129 (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6134002/wo/hmJXpsh3JmSj2oW8P7i6KG8UbbC/0.PSLID?mco=405B1455&nplm=MA190Z%2FA) but considering how overpriced Apple hardware is, this 'savings' in the software is nothing.
I mean in a home market (note that I say home) where the two major OS's are Windows XP and OSX, I would not say that Microsoft is overcharging at all - for the support (languages, hardware, etc.) and ease of use it provides I feel 200 bucks is fair game. I mean there are a lot of people who work on Windows, it is obviously one of the bigger teams at MS. If you think it is overcharged, don't ***** buy it. But to fine MS for its products 5 dollars or 12 dollars per piece of software is ridiuclous, and it might end up hurting the people who work there indirectly.
If you find my views wrong, then go buy an Apple computer and pay less for your OS. I don't see the judges ***** pulling Apple into court for overcharging for their hardware (by 100%!) to exploit the fact that some people prefer their OS and are willing to pay that much for it.
My take: if you don't ***** like Windows XP, you don't buy it. You can go use Linux. More than likely as a common user you will find it confusing, intimidating, and a vexing experience (I speak for the common user, not power uses like you or me), or with some help from a tech friend you might be able to start using it. Or, go buy an Apple computer and use their OS since it is very friendly.
But whatever you do, don't fault the company from which so many bought WILLINGLY. - tower31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long do you think it will take to start seeing Microsoft products on eBay for the New yorker's? I give it 5 minutes...
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Bill Gates has enough money to give everyone in the world a little more than $7.00
On the other hand, I don't have enough money to give everyone in the world a penny. :( - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gee, that's so generous. On the other hand, the case is kinda *****. You know what you bought when you bought it, and if you don't like that, then don't buy it. Or change it.
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Liberal nazis? Come on, everyone knows that *republicans* are the nazis, liberals the commies, and libertarians the anarchists.
All kidding aside -- I live in nyc and you'd be suprised at how diverse this place is. Yes, there are a lot of liberals, but there are republicans too, and libertarians and communists and just about every other flavor you can dream of. Don't fall for stereotypes -- new york is a city of 8 million individuals, each with a unique view of the world. You have to respect that. - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not moot for me. :-D
(We pay so much in taxes you see, it's nice to get a bit of the Microsoft New Computer Tax back!) - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about the lawyers. I bet they are getting a good chunk of change.
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1stick the $12 in the "A" "S" "S", just dont' bother me for running unlicensed *extra* copies of windows, and yes I did buy a laptop with xphome license. i say, if you buy a computer with a licensed copy of the o/s, leave me the frick alone.. don't want to hear the bchin and moaning about anti-trust, it's not my fault technology has not obsolesced in the magic moore's law way like it used to... http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/131322_msftearn18.html - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"The whole lawsuit was BS in general."
Who would've guessed an anti-Apple troll would come to defend Microsoft? Hell must be pretty cold right about now... - doubledoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To summarize...I'm pleasantly surprised how many intelligent, free-market types commented on this story. I thought most computer geeks were commies (I mean, if you hang on slashdot, how the hell else could you see things?)...but it's nice to know that there are some libertarians and just plain rational people out there.
Microsoft is a business that sells products and services. If you don't like their products, services, practices, or prices...then don't give them your money. You really do have a choice...and some of those choices are free (ubuntu etc). You cannot have a "monopoly" when you have choices. The entire lawsuit is bunk, the judge is a leftist croney, and new york wouldn't be able to support all the liberal nazis that infest its city if it weren't for the "evil" corporations that cut them a pay check every freaking week. I love leftists..."corporations are greedy and evil...but boy do I like their paychecks."
PS...I loathe republicans just as much as democrats. (I'm a libertarian) - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hap·less (hăp'lĭs) pronunciation

Microsoft != hapless - xixixix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0a very very idiotic lawsuit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What is you point? It is $12. So? Not a lot...but seriously...was any consumers REALLY financially hurt by the so-called "monopoly" of Microsoft? No more so than people being forced to use iTunes for music.
And to be honest, $12 is actually a very high number for a class action lawsuit like this where you didn't have to be signed up for the lawsuit to begin with. Usually these types of cases end up in less than $5 for each person. And a lot of times you have to jump through far more hoops to get it than just entering a product code. - SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ahem..... contrary to popular belief, the STATE of NY is -slightly- larger than NYC, and by the way, there are alot of things that you can get in NY w/ $12, even when considering the high cost of living we have. I know if I had that $12, I'd goto IHOP
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MOST PC users don't hate Bill Gates or curse Microsoft. It isa VERY small percentage that do.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It is NOT a hoax. ry doing a little reaserch other than pasting a link. I am in NY and this is legit. I guess I can't say for sure that this particular link is legit, but the settlement IS.
- pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Let's see if I've got this right. Microsoft has to cough up $350 million so the lawyers who represent the class-action plaintiffs can walk away with tens of millions of dollars - quite possibly more - while consumers will receive a whopping $12 if they even bother to file a claim. Nice.
Justice is not blind. It is stupid. - oneon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3$60 bucks in coupons I'll take it thank you...I've actually already signed up. Hope those rusty keys work. :)
