Pop-Up Blocker 6.3.2
Beta Blocker 1.2 - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50Bill Gates really stepped around the question there.
From the quote in the article, it sounds like the Journalist is asking about the viability of Vista in a hospital where the life support systems are actually running Vista. Besides the insanity of installing a very complex piece of software into a very complex piece of hardware where numerous lives are on the line, Bill Gates doesn't really answer the question at all. He goes off on a tangent about the security of Vista in a whole hospital environment and what steps would need to be accomplished for security and reliability. In other words, the same kind of steps that would need to be taken regardless of whether the OS was Linux, UNIX, Windows or Joe's-DIY-OS.
As for my belief of using a black box system like Windows in a life support system? HELL NO! Especially not with Microsofts EULA which states that they are not responsible for any death or injury arising from the use of their OS. If Microsoft can't take responsibility for their crappy OS killing someone, then they don't deserve to be used in life dependent systems. - tvaughn05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45I can see it already, BSOD = Code Blue.
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50im in ur hospital bsod'ing ur patients
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40You would suppose that life support systems would be based upon the simplest computer system possible, that does nothing BUT run the life support machine. That way, there's less chance for bugs due to less code and simpler hardware. What Bill Gates is suggesting is ludicrous.

Did you hear why they're using Windows 3000 as a prison guard?
Because it always locks up!" - michaelkirk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17
If someone dies on windows life support would they wake up if you pressed Ctrl Alt Del? - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21A blue screen of death would make much more sense now.
- arbulus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Nurse: "Doctor! This patient is crashing!"
Doctor: "Hit Ctr-Alt-Del" - Lenin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Will this Life support system be hooked up to the internet?
any system is safe as long as no one can mess with it. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As much as I like Vista, I would not want it to be in charge of my body, My brain only has unsigned drivers for 64-bit mode and I might forget to press F8 every time I wake up.
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13uhhh, and the OS's that run on these things now AREN'T black-boxed? Yeah, some run on BSD variants. But a large proportion of them are closed source.
Yes, running Windows, a general purpose OS, on a ventilator would be dumb. But because Windows has way too many components that the ventilator doesn't need. The more complex an OS is, the more likely it is to fail. Even if you're at 6 sigma, if the system is more complex than you need, you should rethink your approach. But the OS being closed source is a pretty bad reason to not use a piece of machinery. - beggersfunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12HELL NO!
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Till someone plays a file that messes with speech recognition...
Honestly Microsoft... your OS is only 2 days old. Give it time, It'll get ***** with.
"Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15O RLY?
According to this ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=418 ) you can kill the system by talking to it. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10*A window pops up*
I'm sorry but Microsoft Windows Vista Medical Edition® Updates needs to restart your Capnography Monitoring System.
Your Capnography Monitoring System will restart in 5 seconds.
*Microsoft is not responsible if you die while the system is restarting.* - jacotyco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"Would you let your life in Vista's hands? "
*cracks up*
"oh, you're serious." - XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Um did MS verify/test Vista to the appropriate FDA level of SW criticallity? The answer is NO! To do that would put a huge dent in the MS war chest. The required SW testing for super critical medical devices and Avionics SW components is mind boggling and is completely foreign to the average shrink-wrap SW developer.
Bill is blowing smoke... - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Wow, nice link foobar5892
Imagine sending an MP3 to a hospital that has the word "shut down" or something and would kill half of their patients who's lives depend on Vista :D - nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I guess they're trying to cover up every little flaw with their AUP's. We'll end up in situations like "Didn't you read the contract?".
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And if you think thats bad......ask the people who didn't survive the beta.....
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i would hope that a life support system would NOT have any sort of network access
if its not plugged into the network and cannot boot from removeable media.....well, *****, win 3.11 could run a life support system... - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What is your favorite color?
Huh... Jet black, no bluish grey... Can you combine them?
Sure.
Now what would you like to watch when you die?
I wanna watch Flight Sim X rendered in DX10 while listening to Dixie brass. - ganzhimself, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8In more than one instance on the show Grey's Anatomy if you look at the screens of some of the medical equipment you'll see Windows XP running on the screen rather than a medical monitoring device. Not really saying that real life mirrors TV, but I laughed my ass off the times I noticed that.
- xxenclavexx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Only after DX10 came out, that way you can die happy
- scotty1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm sorry but you will have to sue us to find out why Vista killed your loved one.
- madrid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Shiiit, I wouldn't trust Vista with my toaster, let alone my life.
MAYBE I would let it manage the fish tank, but that's about it. - jdog1016, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, it was just released to the public 2 days ago, so no, there are no papers written on its security/reliability because it hasn't really been tested yet. The fact of the matter is that any claim about how good or bad vista might be is presumptuous at best and is entirely based on experience with previous versions of Windows. The only things that we can probably safely assume are these:
1) like all software, it is not perfect. It has bugs
2) soon to be the most widely deployed consumer OS in the world, many of these bugs will be found.
Just about anything else is purely speculative. - ciops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You may find the recording plus the link to the article (in romanian) of one of the journalists.
