- egscott2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're the kind of person that likes to scam friends, then maybe. I'm going to use it for rent splitting, groceries trips, bill splitting, and occasions when someone forgets money. Looks very promising and they appear to have a cell app in development.
- colline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another implication I find extremely intriguing as a deviation from the norm: Sometimes, at least for me, situations/circumstances involving money with friends can be quite awkward--asking someone for monetary conpensation makes one seem as though he/she is a trite, cheap you-know-what. This way, however, an organized system/service sends reminders, removing the sometimes hurtful personal element of reminding someone to repay you.
Just a thought. A for idea, development, etc. Gotta love the emerging services of the 21st century. - ctheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Never knew this existed. Awesome.
- Cloudo, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1I use it with my roommates, very useful. But it lacks certain features like telling you how much money you have spent in the last month and things like that
- arthaey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use BillMonk, and my roommates and I find it extremely useful for tracking who's paid for what over the year. We don't *want* to have to settle each debt separately, we just want to keep a running total of who owes what overall. Thus, BillMonk and not TextPayMe is what we want to use.
As an aside, the developers are very friendly and fast to respond to feature suggestions and bug reports. Thanks, Gaurav and Chuck! - cgroom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is answered on the BillMonk blog, http://billmonk.wordpress.com/2006/02/15/picking-a-payment-service/
TextPayMe does payments; it doesn't do the math. BillMonk helps you split bills, add up amounts, and remember what happened, which is the real problem of friends and money. Moreover, TextPayMe will have transfer fees and amount restrictions whereas BillMonk is free.
As for MatrixClown's objection to scamming, see the FAQ: https://www.billmonk.com/about/faq#badpeople
BillMonk doesn't deal in actual money, but rather IOUs that are honored on a basis of trust between friends. You can only create transactions with known friends and all changes are publically audited. Since there is no money to be scammed and all actions are neither anonymous nor invisible, fraud has simply not been a problem. - matrixclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I digg this.... but can you say scamming? "oops, sally I forgot it was 100 dolalrs, I accidently put in a extra 0)
- tegel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great service, just love it!!!
- snolnf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get this. Why not use TextPayMe to send around real money instead? Now I have to sit around use this monk system, and then remember to go back to give them the real money?? What a waste of time...
- ukit23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a nicely designed app with some interesting implications - I was rooting around on their blog and it looks like they've just added virtual currency support for massive multiplayer online games:

It'll be interesting to see how a service such as this could expand in the future. - sameerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I absolutely love Billmonk lifesaver
- dayama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My co-worker sent me the invite for BillMonk a few weeks ago. Thought the idea behind it was really cool. After a couple weeks of usage this service became second nature. The mobile integration is ingenious.
- Timmy72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I, my family and my sister's family vacationed in Europe for 9 days. Between us we had 4 teenagers also. Let me tell you that no tool would have been more effective than Billmonk. No one cared about who paid for the train seats or museum tickets or the meals. No one hesitated either. The person who paid was made responsible for Billmonking. Not only we have a net summary to settle, we have a great analysis of our spending also.
My children have printed these and added to the trip album as an important record of the trip.
I would be willing to pay for anything half as good. These guys have kept this free. The currency support feature is an impressive implementation. Their execution of ideas impresses me.
Tim - phewner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Billmonk is absolutely the bomb! I think I get about 30 seconds of my life for back everytime my crew goes out for lunch!
- tlog333, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use BillMonk several times in the week. It is great for capturing reminders to pay people back. I have used it for settling bills with my partner, remembering to pay someone back for theatre tickets, and for purchases made on behalf of friends in other locations. Its nice not to have to worry about remembering to pay people back. Thanks BillMonk!
