- buro9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I'm into bikes, in a big way. I have carbon brake levers and gears shifters (Campagnolo Record), super light and strong wheels (Fulcrum Racing 1's). So forgive me if I butt in here, because this topic intrudes upon my fetish for bicycle porn ( http://www.bowlie.com/forum/sports-room/24251-bicycle-porn.html ).
Anyhow... 2.11lbs = 0.957 kg.
Take a look at this Cerveló R3 bike:
http://www.cervelo.com/bikes.aspx?bike=R32006
That's 800 grams. That's right, a whole 157 grams lighter than the one in the article.
There are a fair few bikes out there which would whip the BMC one.
If you really want to knock your socks off, start looking up Colnago, De Rosa, Merckx, Cerveló I've mentioned, Pinarello.
If you want to glaze over lusting after carbon, and want some form to it, look up the Carbon Swiss TT (not really that great a frame, the Cerveló P3 is better, but looks do turn heads).
Anyhow... point is. If bikes are a new object of desire or something you want to look into, you won't go far wrong starting with Cerveló or Colnago. And the BMC's are cool, but they're no so special and unique that they deserve a front page digg. - r3becca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Yet another misleading link..
This frame is NOT "full CNT carbon".
It is conventional carbon fiber but they added nanotubes to the resin, which is suddenly much less interesting. - Imagine3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have a carbon Fiber GIANT (that's the company) same company that sponsors T-Mobile and Jan Urich (Lance Armstrong's biggest rival (formally)) and the frame only weighs 3.8 lbs. But you would be surprised how much 1.7 pounds of weight make. When you are on a long climb, it is huge. Last summer I visited Germany for a couple days. I took my bike with me so ride some of the country and had the chance to ride up Alp d'Huez. The climb up Alp d'Huez is 14km at an average gradient of 8% with 21 hairpin turns. Below are a few pictures:

I actually rode up it 2 times, once on my carbon fiber Giant, and once on a friends Aluminum Giant, his frame weighed 5.1 lbs. We both had the same components on the bike (breaks, levers, cranks etc...) Then later on that day, we switched bikes and the difference was unbelievable. If I had the money I would definitely buy one of these. In a heartbeat - SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thats super tight, I'd get one if I had $3650 laying around.
- 53x11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This frame is rock f-ucking solid with very neutral geometry. Poor handling light-bikes are a thing of the past.
- zhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The limit is 14.9 lbs, and sorry dude, 0.8 lbs is not a hair! In the world of cycling, 0.8 lbs is a pretty substantial amount of weight.
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Still too heavy for a geek like me. :(
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They have to be strong? Damn. I was going to make my speed bike out of balsa wood.
- 53x11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are lighter, stiffer frames available that aren't made in Taiwan like the BMCs are. Yes, it is stamped with "Swiss Engineering" all about, but BMC frames are 100% Taiwanese construction.
Taiwanese carbon can be quite good, however most factories have quality-control on a monetary scale. Many bike companies can have the same product produced, yet some opt to pay-less for shoddier work (ie Specialized). - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wouldn't it just be cheaper and easier just to lose a couple pounds of fat?
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that is the stupidest thing ive ever heard heinous
- zhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yikes. 16.8 lbs is a bit porky for a pro tour level bike (the limit is 6.8 kg (14.9 lbs)). I'd imagine the extra weight is in the DT Swiss 240s wheels - put the Zipps back on!!!!
corkster - in the 2005 TdF Lance rode a couple different configurations of the Madone SSLx and the TTX (time trialing only).
Madone SSLx:
http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1470000&f=1
TTX:
http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1478100&f=5 - recursive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It depends how much fat you have to lose.
- jsnwest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, the bonding matrix is responsible for up to 80% of the structural quality of a bike frame. This is the "secret difference" between manufacturers. Easton claims a 20% strength increase over their old non-cnt carbon parts.
- BobMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My bike frame weighs 2.6 lbs. and didn't cost anything close to that. I realize aluminum ain't as cool as carbon, but my wallet doesn't care.
- Pieps457KHz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im a roadie, and i'll take a steel bike thank you very much. http://www.vanillabicycles.com/
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2imagine: carbon's wonderful, but (for me at least) there's still something about a high quality steel frame. A reynold's 853 is down to like what, 1770g? that's like 3.9lbs, about the same weight as aluminum when they started making those.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess so, or convert to singlespeed and lose the weight of gears, derailers, cables, and caliper/disc brakes.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is sweet and not just becasue I have an older Specialized Epic carbon fiber. Though that flash page needs better fonts on the left tabs, I almost blew out an eyeball trying to read it.
- thedonga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1light bikes? how about 4166 grams for the full deal: frame, components, pedals, everything....
ps 4166 grams is 9.19 pounds
http://www.lightbike.de (german)
http://weightweenies.starbike.com/articles.php?ID=21 (english page with weights and components) - dealcatcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ride a Scott CR1 carbon bike, the frame only weighs 1.94lbs (880 grams).
http://www.scottusa.com/category.php?UID=312
While the BMC is a cool bike it is no where near the lightest. If you want to see some really light bikes check out this site.
http://weightweenies.starbike.com/articles.php?category=roadbikes - Huckleberry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now hopefully they will design a mtb frame in the same way.. i ride both but my passion is still dirt.
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Trek carbon.
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you are going on a long, straight, perfectly flat ride, then yes, you could take out the gears and make it single speed, but if you have any hills, sharp turns, or if its a short race, you need to be able to shift.
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's also magnesium bikes too that are quite lite. I was looking into a couple of frames for mtb'n this summer... that and some nice cf stems, seat posts, bars, etc, etc... Also there's magnesium brakes by Avid that are sweet.
- corkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what sort of bike does Lance Armstrong ride?
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yup soon ill be able to ride this thing up the space evelator. digg'n anything nanotube these days
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a roadie and I'm in love with that bike.
- mtbikemj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Give me a 25lb+ mountain bike!
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent!
This will make the perfect status symbol for yuppie roof racks all over California.
Every time I see an ultralight bike outside of world class competition I want to slap the ***** out of someone. Riding a bike that weighs less than half as much as the spare tire around your waist is just absurd. - altidude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's very nice! And at at $3650 it's less than I expected but still way more than I could pay for a bike frame.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've ridden bikes that weigh 1 pound altogether
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. My favorite bike is my singlespeed. It's amazing to ride and I feel I get a better work-out. Sure I can't do much spinning, but I haven't had as much fun on a bike since I was a kid. Plus no one's going to steal my beat up singlespeed, so I can actually use it as transportation as well.
Although in a race situation... yes I can imagine gears would be important :)
Hills can be more challenging... but isn't that the point? - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't worry you were already born, you don't need your DNA that much.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn that thing is light.
- cyclonus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trek Madone that he's customized.
http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1464000&f=1 - cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1C'mon Lance, you know you want # 8.
- mtfbwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding. Every time I think about throwing some more carbon stuff (bars, seat post, cranks, etc) onto my 4 year old 5200, I think about the 20 lbs I still need to lose and that is free. :)
IMO, carbon bike frames rule the road. I have tried aluminum and ti and still go back to carbon. - dogoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want to see a little kid pick it up.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oddly enough, it's right at the Tour de France limit at just a hair over 16lbs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Steel is still real
- dealcatcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could always buy a hand made Calfee Bamboo frame.
http://www.calfeedesign.com/bamboo.htm - stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not the lightest
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I remember my econ teacher paying over 10K for a bike like this. Ironic considering he's an econ teacher.
- vermin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah, if only it was ALL carbon nanotubes, then it would be strong and light.
- Kungfublood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carbon nano anything were released to the market with no health testing at all and it has lately been shown that nano carbon irreversibly bonds to human DNA ! causing what? nobody knows! But because this is not required to be tested we are proudly once again the free lab rats
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1agreed.
- mntbikeracer1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would still rather have a carbon soloist from cervelo.
