- yeeaauuh, on 05/21/2009, -2/+734I'm sure Steve Carter, District Manager of the Geek Squad, cried himself to sleep after he found out that his geeks were selling $600 hard drives that weren't necessary.
- bundwallah, on 05/21/2009, -1/+602Troubleshooting 101. Check all cables. :) Kudos to the guys who found it and didn't charge for the 'fix"
- DorXtar, on 05/21/2009, -2/+592Best Buy relies on the ignorance of the trusting masses for their bottom line.
- superherofive, on 05/21/2009, -5/+432I worked at Geek Squad in Montgomery, Alabama as a Double Agent. (I got to your house and make things work...) While I was being 'trained' we had an appointment to install a brand spanking new 22in HP LCD. (Why an elderly lady needed such a high end LCD was beyond me...) We drive up to a modest home and an the elderly lady comes to the door. She's excited to see people and lets us in while chatting. Apparently the monitor they had previous crapped out and they needed a new one. (Geek Squad more than likely said that) The reason they needed it was because her husband had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and they needed it to help get his affairs in order. The lady didn't look to be in the best of health either. So we install the monitor for $225 dollars + the price of the monitor and while the lady is out of the room the guy I'm working with starts talking to me about how we can 'upsale' this situation and he then proceeds to use fear tactics to get even more money out of this woman.
This is the way of Best Buy. They literally prey on the uninformed with scary words like 'virus' and 'malware' and they tell people that they can fix problems they can't. They never offer safer surfing habits, or information they just throw hardware and software and big words at people. I quit the job even though I desperately needed it because I could not be a part of an organization that treats people that way.
I'm sure people will say "Oh it's just YOUR Best Buy.." but the fact of the matter is the company works this way. They want the PC techs to sell not repair and they don't care how you do it as long as you're making bank.
I can't understand why people still go to Best Buy stores. - mstachiw, on 05/21/2009, -2/+375Geek Squad = Monster Cable
- Tarnum, on 05/21/2009, -2/+346I heard he cried all the way to the bank.
- plaguepony, on 05/21/2009, -5/+280Should have used the Nerd Herd
- jmc1029, on 05/21/2009, -4/+272Honestly....... who is surprised?
If you are even remotely technical, you shouldn't be surprised at all..... geek squad is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to IT. - jimlow, on 05/21/2009, -1/+212whens the last time that you saw a hard drive cost $600? I saw a 1TB drive on Newegg for $100. and that was brand new.
- sindex, on 05/21/2009, -2/+195$580 for a single hard drive? WTF are they putting in there? VelociRaptors are only like $250-300. I guess they're charging for OS installation, bloatware, and that free virus they installed so they could sell you Norton as well?
- BoneStamp, on 05/21/2009, -0/+188The only thing BestBuy is good for is checking stuff out before you buy it somewhere else online.
- xobecide, on 05/21/2009, -5/+192I applied and went through the interview... I thought showing off computer skills would get me in. They called back saying position was filled, went in to see who they hired; a girl that had no computer experience whatsoever. I wouldn't have been so upset if she wasn't an uggo.
- AndrewDB, on 05/21/2009, -2/+176As an ex-employee of Geek Squad (I quit after these exact reasons and being warned that I wasn't practicing "business practices")
Geek Squad is a joke. - kingofthisnight, on 05/21/2009, -0/+154It is amazing how often asking "Is everything plugged in?" cures computer problems.
- wesarey, on 05/21/2009, -0/+151$80 for the drive. $500 for labor.
- kingofthisnight, on 05/21/2009, -5/+134Not surprised at all. When I worked at Best Buy our Geek Squad employees were all idiots.
- WiretapStudios, on 05/21/2009, -4/+131I have never used Geek Squad, but when I go to Best Buy and return something (for example), I see 5-6, 16-20 year old Geek Squad employees giggling at something and pushing each other, etc. It's insanely unprofessional, and I would never let them touch anything I own. I would call a computer repair professional. Or, I would just find out how to fix it myself.
- DeadlyNinja, on 05/21/2009, -0/+122I'm still waiting to get my Commodore 64 back from FireDog.
- jankind, on 05/21/2009, -1/+120OMG it's a VIRUS!!! The Sales Squad strikes again.
- gbo2k69, on 05/21/2009, -0/+110One of the most interesting things was at the very end. How are they allowed to manipulate the BBB rating like that? It should not be an option for a company to just "consolidate" their ratings. We've taken 20 F rated stores, combined them together, and now they are an A-. We saw how well that turned out in the Consolidated Debt Object market.
- SpectralSounds, on 05/21/2009, -8/+114Idiots that they "higher"? Oh boy.
- AndrewMoyer, on 05/21/2009, -0/+106tears of gold
- MrPatriotMan, on 05/21/2009, -5/+100As an ex geek squad employee I have to say this is spot on!!!! The geek squad is setup to be a sales force and not a repair shop. If you return anything for warranty besides a desktop computer there it will most likely be shipped out to some other place besides that store to get repaired because the idiots that they higher there dont know how to fix anything. Most of them pay crappy wages and make you work odd ball hours also. I quit because after working there long enough you feel like ***** by having your manager tell you to lie to the customers so that they can meet their store sales numbers. Its not about customer service, never was. Its not just one store, its company policy to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- y2kh8r, on 05/21/2009, -4/+90I love how they found a virus on the new hard drive that they installed.
- arbulus, on 05/21/2009, -0/+78did you try turning it off then on again?
- toxicityj, on 05/21/2009, -0/+76I'll be honest, I missed the the name of the position being "double agent" and thought you were literally being a double agent. Working at Best Buy whilst gathering intel for the Circuit City (RIP) or somethign.
- ManUnitdFan, on 05/21/2009, -0/+72Please support your local computer repair shop. Do it for yourself and for them.
- ezflip, on 05/21/2009, -1/+72Um, my question is:
How did they know the computer had a virus if the Hard Drive was broken and had to be replaced? - johnclayton, on 05/21/2009, -1/+70The real news here is that the Better Business Bureau upped their rating from F to A- by grouping all of the Geek Squads together with the highest rated one at the headquarters - which is complete *****.
Geek Squad employees seem to mostly fall into the "don't give a *****" category, which is why they don't care enough to even pretend to do a good job. I'd never, ever let them touch any of my stuff, and it makes me throw up a little when I hear of people who did. - TheUngod, on 05/21/2009, -3/+71600$ computers aren't necessary for these people. If you're taking it to Geek Squad in the first place, you don't know enough about computers to need a good one.
- generaleet, on 05/21/2009, -9/+76Of course, you were the only bright one and that's what everyone thought of you.
- jthomson, on 05/21/2009, -0/+66My mom once got mad at me for asking her that. A month later she finally confessed that after we got off the phone she checked and there was a cable unplugged.
A lot of the time people feel offended when you ask something like that, but they don't realize it's because we've all done it before. - Chompy, on 05/21/2009, -2/+67Returning things at Best Buy implies that you made a purchase there. That is a mistake.
- kelmaster1, on 05/21/2009, -0/+65See, after working in large retail for a while, you begin to notice that companies prefer people that are simple minded and easily moldable. They do not want an intelligent, self-thinking employee. People who have brains are generally frowned upon because they will do the right thing and favor the customer; or they will try to change or improve something. Getting someone with no-brain and telling them to do whatever you want them to do is far more effective and profitable than a smart person who thinks for themselves. That's why it's really easy to get a retail job at 16, but it somehow becomes more difficult with experience and education...
Also, I swear to god some Women in power positions (especially in retail) can be incredibly sexist, but hide it incredibly well. - DCstewieG, on 05/21/2009, -0/+61No, no, she WAS an uggo.
- varchar255, on 05/21/2009, -0/+58Easy--they lied.
- jessemoya, on 05/21/2009, -1/+58The only thing that surprises me about this clip is the fact that one of the Geek Squads actually got it right the first time. That one store must be like a winning lottery ticket.
- blackninja543, on 05/21/2009, -2/+55This is why we cant have nice things.
- Elranzer, on 05/21/2009, -1/+53$600 hard drives are never necessary.
- CyclonusRIP, on 05/21/2009, -0/+52Why would I want to hire you when I could hire someone with boobs?
- kamikazecow, on 05/21/2009, -1/+52http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
ULTRA SCSI!!!!!! - FOR3MAN, on 05/21/2009, -9/+60$30 to install a sick of RAM. Enough said.
Yet every time I hammer best buy I get buried on Digg? - kelmaster1, on 05/21/2009, -3/+50^That's because your mom's a woman and women do not like to admit they're wrong, ever. They will avoid, transfer blame, or do anything to not admit they did something stupid.
- Chompy, on 05/21/2009, -0/+46Assuming your story is true, it would actually still be your problem since they still have your money and you now have nothing.
- saxmaniac1987, on 05/21/2009, -6/+52The employees aren't necessarily idiots. I know a couple very competent people that have worked for geek squad because they needed a job--forcing people to buy new hard drives and install crappy, bloated av programs is the name of the game for the business. The employees need to comply if they want to get paid...
- MasterPain, on 05/21/2009, -2/+47Everyone who knows ***** about computers knows geek squad is a scam. All they want you to do is buy a new computer, with the warranty so you wont have this problem again. In fact if they knew who plugged in the HD at the other geek squad & did not charge them would probably be fired.
- sidebuster, on 05/21/2009, -5/+49FINALLY a great cover story from fox. ***** Best Buy probably pushes Geek Squad Employees to do this without actually saying it out loud. I know they did that kind of stuff when I worked in Office Depot. They really want you to get that market basket, even though the customer doesn't need it. (I told them to go to monoprice.com for usb cables and the manager didn't like that).
- supermario182, on 05/21/2009, -0/+44buy more employees are way more competent than best buy ever will be
- grizzlybrice, on 05/21/2009, -0/+42Geek Cable = Monster Squad
- thegrizz51, on 05/21/2009, -1/+43I just hope Chuck's "girlfriend" is there when I stop by! Soooo hot!!!
