Best Buy Fires Geek Squad Supervisor Following Negative Newspaper Articles
consumerist.com — About Porn Pilfering. Best Buy is on the offense, launching an internal witch hunt to unmask the "rogue employees" responsible for exposing Geek Squad's pervasive culture of porn pilfering. Their first victim is the Geek Squad supervisor of the Santa Clarita store, one of the only Best Buy locations whose former employees were quoted in articles.

- mistermoxy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I think the market designates the value of their skills. And it has done designated.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Geek Squad charges exorbitant amounts to do very ordinary work that is only slightly above the skillset of the people who hire them. This is a GREAT opportunity for most Diggers, no doubt.
If you're looking for some extra bucks advertise yourself as a PC repair service (community paper, rec centre, neighbourhood signposts, etc.). I've been doing this for about 7 years and it's fun, fulfilling, profitable work. I've worked with many elderly people who sat with me while I fixed things and they really appreciated my explanations of what I was doing, why it was necessary, and what they can do to prevent the problem in the future.
I won't say how much I make per hour but it's a damn nice supplement to my daytime salary. If you know you're good enough with PCs to fix any problem that comes your way (mostly spyware removal and cluttered 8-year-old Win98 installs) all you have to do is quote a price lower than Geek Squad. And believe me, when they charge $175 for on-site spyware removal it's very very easy to eat their lunch.- AlbinoRaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I've had similar results myself. Those clowns charge 450 for an OS install. I charge 300, I'll back up the box and clean out the chassis. One thing I've been getting recently is purposely installing keyloggers on family PC's so parents can see what the kids are up to. I charge $100 for that. The ten minute to install and configure is usually followed by an hour's worth of how to.
- Falkon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only downside to this is that you can have customers from hell. My uncle did this as a profession for three years and said that it was quite possibly the worst thing he's ever done.
He also lives in kentucky, so that could be part of it, but...be careful.

- dieselmachine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1How about not having sympathy for those who haven't learned how to google the answers to their own questions?
Given a choice between learning and paying a ***** of money, they chose to pay. The allure of paying to remain ignorant is too great for some people, and I don't think they deserve any breaks whatsoever. If you can't use to internet to learn how to install RAM, you SHOULD pay a ridiculous amount for it, because then, the money isn't being spent on labor. The money is being spent to continue a life of ignorance regarding even the most basic of computer operations.- vfrex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Not sure what your point is supposed to be, but...
People like boxed solutions that just work. Rarely will you find it the case that this fails. It is practically an axiom of human nature. Most people will bring their car to the shop for an oil change, call a plumber for a leak. Businesses call in consultants, courts of law call in expert witnesses. People want to maximize their time doing what they enjoy, not sit around learning how to deal with computer issues. Apple has excelled at this concept to the degree that they are earning over $2 billion per year.

- firefox15, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Is the supervisor supposed to go to the houses with the technicians to monitor them or something? Why the hell was he fired?
- coinman987, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Because he exposed the truth. You know they can't let people know the truth it's bad for business. Who would want to keep using geek squad if people knew they don't do anything, charge a ***** load of money for doing nothing, sell you a bunch of stuff you don't need, steal your files, and take forever to do it? Best buy's solution is to fire the people who talk, hide the problem, hope nobody finds out, and continue to scam people out of their money.
- knobidy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7"Best buy's solution is to fire the people who talk, hide the problem, hope nobody finds out, and continue to scam people out of their money."

- Egoist, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21It's because his job is to manage the employees under him. If he didn't do anything to stop the practice in the first place, he's not managing his department very well.
It's incredible that basic management practices have to be explained to Diggers. If it doesn't have to do with WoW, the iPhone, or Ron Paul, it's not worth knowing.- fjf314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly. Instead of actually doing something internally to attempt to stop what was going on, he just decided to tell the world about it. That doesn't seem like the smartest way to go about getting results.
- sgglynn, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1He's a fall guy, like Scooter Libby... Except the fall guy isn't supposed to get ***** pardoned right after he takes said fall.
- BeardDob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0From what I remember of the original article the Supervisor was also part of the porn theft deal. He took a copy of the stolen material for himself. Granted this was some two or three weeks ago but I seem to remember that.

- liquidhalcyon, on 10/10/2007, -15/+0I don't blame them for taking the porn, if people would RTFM they wouldn't be at risk anyway.
- 808kick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17So when I'm replacing the tile in your kitchen you don't mind me sneaking a few of your beers, making some long distance calls, and taking photos of your daughter cause you know if you RTFM you'd know how to do it
- mistermoxy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Dude, there are manuals for laying tile floors. I've used one. Manuals generally work.

- Skod, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Seriously though, I was honestly surprised that people pay for something as simple as an iTunes installation. I wonder what Geek Squad would do if I came in with a problem on one of my Ubuntu boxes....or better yet, take a new HP, put linux on it and go in claiming, "Winders looks funny today"
- legendxx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6if you did that you would be the biggest nerd in the world with too much time on your hands and everyone would know it.. congrats
- kaje, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10They'd charge you for a reinstall of Windows.
- mtheoryx83, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They'd probably go ahead and replace your hard drive, then do an install of Windows, and hold your PC hostage until you paid.
- WildTang3nt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7They'd probably "fix" it by reformatting your drive, putting Vista on it, and not tell you first. Oh, and of course they'll charge you for the OS as well...
- Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I would fix your ubuntu box, show you your problem, and explain (depending on your level of expertise) how the repair was completed. Talk about painting with broad strokes.
- bonedog73, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1People have paid me to not only to install iTunes, but also to show them howto use iTunes and load their iPods with music... What baffles me is that the IT know-it-alls cant understand that there are many people that could care less about how technology works, and they just want to be able to use their devices without the hassles of understanding all the ins & outs.
- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0IT know-it-alls frequently dismiss other skills people find useful if it isn't IT. I've had IT guys lord it over me but had to help them change flat tires. Pride knows no boundaries.
- yuppiexj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm a software developer and constantly help turn wrenches on a friends car (he makes 6 figures and drives an escort.)
While pride knows no boundaries, skill sets know even less.

- LastDitchHero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yea, and when my Computer Science buddy started trading stocks, all he looked at was charts. Too inept to do the most basic research on a stock, look at a 10-K report, use Morning Star (or Yahoo Finance if your a broke ass but Morning Star is free at most colleges), or just look at the most basic concepts of the business. At which point I suggested I-share, or an aggressive mutal fund. Which put in digg terms, those are the Macs of the investment world.
- zyklon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+43I hope they get completely shut down. The Geek Squad is a dishonour to all PC Techs out there.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dishonourable techs only make the good guys look better. Competition is good. People don't deserve to have their privacy violated though.
- drmangrum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's really too bad BB didn't do more to hire qualified people and pay them what they were worth. The idea was sound, just executed VERY poorly. There is such a plethora of services they could offer the general public outside simple tech solutions. Corporate greed is it's own worst enemy.
- hsmalley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22When I worked there the amount of porn that would come in would make any one want to burn a disc or two. Also the amount of homemade stuff was pretty impressive too. Although this doesn't surprise me because they stopped hiring quality people and started hiring people who could sell stuff and just told you to stick in their MRI disc and let some kid across the world work on it via their Agent Johnny Utah, aka out sourced cheap labor. I'm sure there are a few good techs left but most have left when told, "If you want to move up in this company you need to work sales..." I just blame the irresponsible hiring practices.
- erniegs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Reminds me when we would have to make "the best techs" in the world Managers in order to give them the money they deserved. Most of them were out of their element as managers and we could not pay them (as techs) good money based on pay scales and grade levels.
- spookyttws, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I really don't get why anyone would do this, porn is readily available for free on the internet, and even if you find some large archive of some fetish you're into on someones computer, is it really worth risking your job and crossing a huge moral (and probably legal) line? Hell, a certain, "naughty country", "anonymous man's apartment" or even "the number that comes after 7th street Latinas" offer enough free content to ease anyone's pain. Also, I heard about someone's "sister has a hot friend..."
- diggeddugg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2One word. Amateur.
- owlfeathers, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Rogues? Do you think they can come to Silvermoon City and open an chest for me?
- brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Doesn't surprise me in the least they fired this guy. I'm not surprised this happened either. This is retail, and the pay they're offering for Geek Squad is going to attract the type of element that would steal porn to begin with. Geek Squad is the McDonalds of tech support, except that their prices are among the highest in the industry. I used to work there, and I've heard their excuses like "well it's like a car repair, lots of people are happy to pay and have someone else do it." That would work except that the kind of car repairs analgous to Geek Squad services are things like putting air in the tires, changing wiper blades, and pumping gas. Installing iTunes is easier than pumping gas, yet you find very few people that need to pay someone to do it for them.
- themulf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3True, but their some people who just freak out and break down when it comes to their computer. I think computer stores should offer cheap old mac mini G4's refurbe'd, locked down to safari, and sell that as an idiot proof "internets pc."
- ernasty10050, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25My girlfriend's computer broke a week ago. She took it to the Geek Squad before I had a chance to look at it. They simply reformatted her hard drive, installed the typical freeware virus protection, and charged her $130 after it took five days. Fire the whole Geek Squad.
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It took five days because every 10 seconds managers cart you off to some other department to sell ***** or 'attach' services. Then if you had some peace and quiet from them, you were overrun at the counter. It's like putting the mechanics repair bay in the sales room and expecting the mechanic on his back to answer all the customers dumb questions, while trying to beat a deadline.
It was a great learning experience on how NOT to do things. - spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6A friend of mine took her Windows PC to Future Shop a few years ago because it was randomly rebooting. Future Shop formatted her machine without warning her to back up her stuff and charged her $40. I encouraged her to walk out of the store without paying but she refused. She took it home, reinstalled Windows, and her PC kept on rebooting. Faulty power supply.
- PAPAsoMEAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What about her porn?

- GodjustGod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5How about we fire them for not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground? No offense to the few GS techs out their that have it together, but the majority of them are idiots.
- themulf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I work for CompUSA and I could go on for hours for how much the service is practical ripoff. The techs, most of them not even A+ certs are pretty jaded and hamstrung by sh*tty corporate policy. It is a pretty lame situation. Most people are scared of computer technology and when theirs break, they are mad at the world and want someone to baby them and hold their had all the time.
- Clp727, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8Someone once said that if you take your car to a mechanic and leave your valuables under the hood, don't be surprised if the mechanic finds it.
If you keep porn on your computer, don't be surprised if your computer repair person finds it. I have no sympathy for the dumb asses that can't fix their own problems. A computer isn't another media devise as it is marketed. It was designed for computations. If people don't understand their system, then they are nothing more than sheep to me.
Tip: Try to understand the tools that you use.- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And *****, it's not like they're actually stealing... copy+paste? It's pretty basic. They're just introducing these people to the world of file-sharing, free of charge!
I mean, I can understand if it's a porn folder buried deep in the computer, with some protection on it or something. But if you just leave it in My Docs, you're an idiot. Someone's gonna find it. - Snarfy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"I have no sympathy for the dumb asses that can't fix their own problems"

- xienze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't believe for a second that it's just "rogue employees" doing this. It's definitely systemic. I know a guy who used to work for Geek Squad and years ago he was telling us about how everyone in his department would copy pictures, porn, or whatever off of the customer's computers.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, I believe that even if a system is corrupt the individual must also be corrupt to follow it. If you don't know that invading someone's privacy is wrong then you should be banned from jobs that put you in a position to do so.

You and the other posters here are apparently Computer Techs in your teens and twenties..... Personal Computers have only existed for 20+ years, yet they must be used by 90% of all workers in today's world, some of they users hate them, and consider them a waste of time.
Also, before making rash statements, remember, all of these users are working with Windows and Microsoft products.............Linux is not ready for prime time either in businesses or the homes. I know many people with Masters and PhD degrees that break out in hives when the computer didn't do what they expected.
Also, when you are in your 60's or 70's your ability to learn diminishes for many reasons, less Brain Cells and you have too many other things on your mind like staying alive.............
ErnieGs- jdaustin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Linux is and has been ready for 'Prime Time' for quite awhile. Most of the servers I use are Linux servers. In the past few years Linux servers have replaced our Solaris, HPUX, and Tru64 servers and have done very well.
I'd bet that 20 somethings understand computers on a level most 40+ somethings don't. I don't count people like me that grew up with the technology. There are a lot of people with Masters and PhD degrees that know little outside their area of expertise (including computers); though the same could be said for a lot of computer geeks :)
The problem with offering computer repair on their scale is that they want to make money :) A competent computer tech is expensive. If they can get by with some guy without the experience they will as it is cost effective to do so.

Par for the course for the consumerist bull *****. - robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Umm... The supervisor wasn't the one stealing the porn, I presume it wasn't company policy to steal porn, the supervisor was fired because HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Now: They hire a guy (eventually) who will start doing something about the porn, like perhaps setting up 'secret shoppers' (fake customers) with porn on their computers and monitoring what the workers are doing, then perhaps not just firing these people but putting their name on blacklists so they never work anywhere again (I'm on one of those lists, I've been told, and proof in the pudding: I haven't been able to get a job since 2001). I don't see why customers are complaining.
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What did you do to get on a blacklist?
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Isn't that kind of like asking someone in prison what he's in for? My answer is the same : "I didn't do nuttin, that's my story and I'm stickin to it."
- unreal32, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Odd how you think the only reason why you haven't had a job in 6 years is that there is some magical "blacklist" that every tech employer in the United States secretly checks names against before hiring... And how incredible that all these companies in competition with each other decide to work together just to conspire against you.
Ever think about upgrading your skills, changing careers, starting your own business, moving to where the jobs are, or even getting someone to proofread your resume? Maybe you've mispelled the word "computer" on your resume for the past 6 years and thats the only thing holding you back? Psst, there is no blacklist. And there is no tooth fairy either.- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, I was only told I was on a "Corporate" (not "tech") blacklist by someone in management in Best Buy (He didn't work in the computer department, by the way, he worked in Appliances at the South Setauket, NY store). He's a friend I've had for well over 20 years, and I'm only 32 years old. I never actually believed him, though. I presume the real reason I haven't worked in 6 years is that I haven't bothered applying for a job. I make more money staying home ;-). And yes, by the way, I do have my own business which does well enough.
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1By the way, your employment history _is_ kept in databases that are legally publically accessible to all employers, along with your credit history (Which may likely contain past employers). They can verify who you worked for with that, and if one of your past employers has something bad enough to say about you, you might as well consider yourself "blacklisted" for all intents and purposes. This presumes there is no other databases you do not know about. Did you know I developed and maintain software that tracks information on employees that work for big companies like AT&T, Sprint, Cingular (I guess that is AT&T now too), T-Mobile, and a few others. No I don't work for _any_ of those companies, I work (by contract) with one of their suppliers, and that database definitely contains a comment section on each employee where positive and negative comments from _other_ employees there are/can-be tracked, my databases contain thousands if not tens of thousands of records and it's barely a year old. I'm just some no-body who got a contract. I'm sure there are many thousands of other databases like mine all over the place in different companies.
I presume you'd say the mafia only exists on the sopranos too, but I've had some members on the italian half of my family and know otherwise.- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Your credit history is NOT publicly accessible. It requires your consent to look at.
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What did you do to get on a blacklist?
- richduper, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Come on people! It's just PORN, and they weren't STEALING it (depriving the owners), they were just COPYING it. FREE PORN! It's what built the Internet, why should anyone be surprised? If the owner had personal porn pics on their computer and took no measures to protect their privacy, don't blame the tech who just found the FREE PORN, blame the person who is using technology of which they apparently don't understand the possible consequences of using for such personal purposes.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3FTA: "I'm sorry for any legitimately innocent person that works for Best Buy whom was wrongfully terminated."
The real question here is: When will people learn the difference between "who" and "whom"? - Brian.Honaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Too little too late this time. Best Buy is just scrambling to reclaim what little bit of their image that they can. They have to make an example out of someone. The truth is that this will continue to happen no matter what. They tell their agents that you respect the privacy of the customer. They drill into the agents head that you have NO BUSINESS in someone's "my documents" or "my pictures". Sometimes it's necessary to get into their "My Music" to get a file to test the audio with.
The problem is that they are trusting horny young boys, or just people with no self control. How will they know if someone does it? They're just gonna take a "peek". Until Best Buy gets screen capture hardware on their KVM's so they can personally look in on what an agent is doing, it's never going to stop. By the way, if you all think that this isn't going on at your local small town computer shop, you're an idiot. Best Buy bears the responsibility on this one simply due to their place in the public eye. - RationalXubrnce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3 Who cares if they copy porn? As long as they copy/paste and not cut/paste what difference does it make? It's a job perk of working on PC's.
- mbolgian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm not really sure what you'd call it; perhaps not stealing. Certainly not innocent though. Suppose you had the ability to copy any car on the street you liked. You're not depriving the owner of it, now are you? What has the owner of the original car lost?
Now, if the porn was personal pictures of his wife, pictures that nobody else in the entire world had, then that poses a different set of problems. That being said, I sure as hell would not keep porn pics of my wife in a place where anyone could get to them. Why keep porn pics of her at all? She'll get nekkid on command pretty much :P- izKAiNE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0enjoy that while it lasts..... the nekkid on command thing anyway.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The fact that GEEK SQUAD and others like them are so popular tells me there are hundreds of thousands of people who basically deserve to be bent over the saw horse. For God's sake people, take a few hours from your soap, or your porn surfing, or your nose picking and learn your PC!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Right, firing a Supervisor who coudlent have possibly controlled what his employees say about their job while at home is obivously suddenly going to turn Geek Squad from the useless consumer-exploit fest it currently is to a shining example of tech support everywhere..

If a hottie brings me a PC to fix, you think I wont look for pics or vids???- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, only if we assume you have morals and aren't a perv.
- PAPAsoMEAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0not perv man, common ***** sense, since when did everyone become such a pussy
- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So it's okay to dig through personal files and copy what you like? After all, if he went to her house why shouldn't he be allowed to go through her paper files and make copies of tax records, intimate photos and other items. After all, she's a hottie so he'd be a pussy if he didn't take advantage of her, right?
I don't understand the moral ambiguity that says don't steal from a store but once something is digitized it's "sharing" and okay to take. In both instances you are getting something without the owner's permission and without paying but because you're a smart IT guy it's all right.- PAPAsoMEAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1it's only ***** porn, nobody's talking about tax records or whatever else you have, I don't think anyone cares about other "serious" stuff. It's perfectly ok to steal porn man

- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Computer technicians are the new mechanics. There are good ones and there are jerks who will rip you off. Anytime one person understands a technology better than another and profit is involved there will be those who feel obliged to rip people off. Whether it's installing a new operating system or changing the rotors on your breaks, the opportunity exists for the less scrupulous to sucker someone.
- PAPAsoMEAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1true, this ***** mech I know charged me $493 to change all brakes, 1 rotor, and 1 caliper. give me a shotgun!
- hoxlund, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I am actually a CIA agent at our local Geek Squad and I do agree that we tend to hire sales people instead of die hard true pc technicians that actually know what there doing without some baby tools provided by corporate office. But look at it this way, what would your local small mom and pop computer shop do if you brought your porn infested computer in? Copy it off and fresh format the machine. I've got some very scary stories about computers that come from the 8 or so local shops. People bring them into us and it makes me feel lucky to work at a place that offers MY expertise. I do the job correctly and right the first time. But in closing... remember... we are all human. Ohh and I do happen to work for another business as there computer technician and lead computer builder... Biohazard Computers

Down with the Geek Squad. - drdewm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Best Buy should just hire their techs from the Digg forums. All these saints posting, everyone knows and does the right thing. Digg should be a primary HR resource.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Um they're geeks, what exactly did they expect?
If they just had the common sense to rent them prostitutes, this would never have been a problem!- LiterateWolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Rent hookers?! VOTE LIBERTARIAN!
Now I know why geeks are libetarians.

- thedreaming1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3What's worst, that a geek squad member got caught copying porn from a customer's machine, or that they customer gets a hard on from watching lesbian midgets have sex with robotic donkeys? (wait for the mental picture, then type a response)
- Brian.Honaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That actually kind of turns me on. It's special olympics meets the terminator with donkeys. This comment FTW!!!
- Squill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I used to work for a rental company that rents out furniture and computers. Every time we would get a computer back from a hot customer we would immediately check it for home made porn of themselves.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
