- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+127Hurray Google! Kick Bell's ass!
- lucy22, on 07/07/2008, -0/+76It will be interesting to see the outcome here. Will the CRTC do anything.
- grantmoore3d, on 07/08/2008, -2/+72Google, fighting for a free internet
- alapoet, on 07/07/2008, -4/+65Comcast was caught doing the same thing.
- stygiansonic, on 07/07/2008, -0/+51Strange that Google just hired a former Bell exec:
http://digg.com/business_finance/Google_Hires_Bell ...
Nonetheless, kudos to Google for taking a stand up here in Canada against this. Bell's throttling of not only their own customers but of the ISPs that buy wholesale bandwidth from them is just ridiculous. - Invid, on 07/07/2008, -1/+40Probably not. They have done nothing about the big 3 to date, and as you can see, they're sticking together on this issue too. The CRTC is a joke, and does nothing to advocate for Canadian consumers.
- vw2005, on 07/08/2008, -1/+37I heart Google =)
I got away from Bell DSL and went with smaller providers for better service + to promote competition ..... throttling THOSE 'little guys' is DEFINITELY ILLEGAL! - Cam_86, on 07/08/2008, -1/+30Pretty ***** sad when we need american companies to defend our rights. I guess thats how useless the CRTC has become.
I love Canada, and am really proud of just about everything this country has done... but our telco's are a ***** joke. Slimiest, greediest ***** in the world. Its nice that some shaming is happening in the international news, because as far as i can tell, its the only thing that might motivate them to do something else other then blame it on 'the lines' or the customer. - grantmoore3d, on 07/08/2008, -0/+27Just FYI, your zero key might be getting stuck down
- Matt2727, on 07/07/2008, -0/+23Im with you 100000000% on that one
- Jeffler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+22The 0's are getting you closer to their new bandwidth cap...
- Mr_Lyle, on 07/08/2008, -0/+20You know every once in a while I read something on the internet that makes me question my intellect. I think of myself as a pretty smart guy, I'm not a genius or anything but I'd say my intellect is slightly above that of the average lemmings that walk the streets. But then I read something like this:
"Customer relations matters that involve no network interface changes do not engage the network change notification requirements, and it would be inefficient and unwieldy to create new requirements in this regard," wrote Craig McTaggart, director of broadband policy for Telus.
WHAT THE ***** DID HE JUST SAY?! - grayfox, on 07/08/2008, -0/+15Anyone who currently has bell should check out teksavvy. www.teksavvy.com
They support network neutrality but are also effected by bells throttle as they make use of bells dslams and ATM network.
For $30 a month you get a 5000/800 connection with a 200 gigabyte per month limit. Or you can get an unlimited account for $40 a month)
Teksavvys support staff and CEO maintain an active presence on dslreports.com's forum as well. There a great company located in chatham ontario.
They even organized a protest against bells violation of network neutrality that had ~300 people. - overkillingness, on 07/08/2008, -0/+14Viva la résistance!!!

- mrbeagle, on 07/08/2008, -0/+12Drop them a line and let them know how you feel. Please be respectful.
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/contactus.htm - mrhedges, on 07/08/2008, -0/+12*****, I love Google.
- tossayo, on 07/08/2008, -1/+12Hired or RESCUED? :D
- TheInfamousOne, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11"They" didn't create the monopoly, we did by using google as our search engine. They in no way prohibit someone from using a different search engine. Google just does what it does, and it does it very well.
Advertising isn't the only profitable part of the internet either. Look at online commerce, places like amazon and newegg, you think they'd be where they are without the internet? - Tek12, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11You need to look into this a little deeper. There is a bigger picture to see. It's about the principle. It's about setting precedent.
- themastersb, on 07/08/2008, -0/+10I asked once if they were throttling traffic and I got outright lied to on that issue.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9***** Bell. My internet is only at the advertised speed at 4am.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9Google far from monopolizes advertising. Part of me wishes they did, because I'm sure Google wouldn't allow ads that hijack my system.
- Fozefy, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8Well considering there business involved people using the internet and if the internet is slow then people won't use it. Especially some of there products which force you to keep data online that can be accessed anywhere. If these features move slowly then it effects their business. Sure what Bell is currently targeting doesn't directly effect them, but there is an effect.
- geoken, on 07/07/2008, -2/+10What are you talking about? The CRTC has already forced Bell to publicly release data which significantly contradicts their claims and makes them look really bad. It's also widely accepted that they will be investigating Bell shortly.
- cros, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7Well its in their (Google's) own business interests but the end result will likely be good for the consumer which happens rarely enough for me to be happy about this. The question is, does the CRTC have the balls to enforce? I am a bit worried about that.
- impei, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7I think he considers anything west of New Brunswick 'western'
- jonnyeh, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7I don't think so. Were they caught throttling competitive ISPs that were leasing their Bell's lines? And the only reason for throttling was to make their competition less competitive?
- Lancelot9201, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6To quote a Canadians post: "The government can address these issues by opening up the Canadian telecommunications industry to proper competition - if you hate Bell's practices presently, most people don't have much choice to go to another provider, and that's what lets companies like Bell, Rogers, & Telus get away with ripping off Canadians on a regular basis"..!!
Thank God the Canadians are fighters when it comes to losing their rights, unlike most in the USA who just lay down & give up.. - PrimoTurbo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I hope they win, I hate Bell they are literally throttling all of Ontario since all the resellers use them.
- Tek12, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7He said that as long as the network is not interrupted in some major way and that you are still getting 'service' (which is what is being debated), they don't have to notify you on changes in their service policies and these types of notifications should not be regulated.
- da_bradler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6also Bell is in Canada we have different telecommunication laws. For instance wire tapping without judicial overview is illegal here and in America it's considered protecting freedom.
- j1ggy, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6This is because the internet isn't regulated, as the CRTC's website states:
"You may not be aware that the Commission does not regulate the rates, quality of service or business practices for Internet Service Providers and cannot pursue complaints on these matters on your behalf. For information on where to lodge a complaint, read our Fact Sheet about Internet."
As much as I hate government control, I think it's about time the government steps in and regulates the internet in the same way they regulate other communications services to protect consumers. - swimmingbird67, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6go google
- grant1080, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I'm getting tired of the socialist ***** up here in Canada. ***** the CRTC, Bell, and Rogers.
- kabes, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I've used Bell DSL since 1998 and I downloaded stuff 10 years ago faster than I do today with their throttling. Is this supposed to be progress? What am I paying for again?
- bicycleman, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Google should drop every ISP's domain that conducts illegal bandwidth throttling from their index so they can't even been found.
- Spudster, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6You just summed up exactly why Ron Paul is wrong.
- HonkingAntelope, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5No, I'm in Montreal and get throttled like a bitch.
- ca1amity, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Its pathetic that it takes Google to bring this issue to public consciousness via the mainstream media up here. People have been fighting this since the moment Bell started shaping traffic but it's somehow not been newsworthy that anti-competitive practices are taking place.
The CRTC is a black mark on this country. It is an international shame of an organization when it comes to national media rights/practices etc. It needs to be gutted at all levels and restocked with people who realize not only what century they're living in, but the realities of working in a global telecommunications market. - Sarevok9, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5My last name is soooooo offended.
Same as it was with all the 'taco bell' nicknames growing up. - oxymoron69, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5well, bell is buddys with microsoft. rogers is in bed with yahoo.... don't you think it's in their best interests to keep the pipes free and clear for ANYONE, including google?
- Yage2006, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5Bell is no longer my problem I dropped them earlier this year as should everyone until they come to there senses.
They must be punished! - supersteve, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5i use a third party ISP that uses the Bell lines and my traffic is throttled. Pisses me off that they can do this. My ISP is pro bit-torrent and is very pissed at Bell too.
- Spudster, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I think you were kinda late on taking advantage of that one.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5Well they are taking their orders from AT&T and they have the illegal political authority to impose any restrictions on it's customers as much a they want.
- VeroAvitar, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5for once as a canadian i'm glad people are picking on us and pointing out the retarded flaws :)
