- patience, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Good guide. Whats missing?
1. Ethics on Digg (TomFraser anyone)?
2. The rise of the Digg armies that promote political views? (Malkin, Think Progress) - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27ProTip 1: Lurk more.
ProTip 2: Keep lurking.
ProTip 3: You've seen it before. Nobody cares.
ProTip 4: Stuff gets voted to the top because other people want it there. Deal. - sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27Beginners guide to digg, abridged: Open your browser and go to digg.com.
There we go. - avester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19because digg is just so confusing of a concept we really need a guide
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+141. Hate Microsoft.
2. Hate Sony.
and the final, so important it gets a letter:
A. Hate G4.
And you will be loved by the Digg community. - LLLSecretChimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I wish it showed separate thumbs-up and thumbs-down totals, as well as the cumulative. As it is, you can't tell a controversial comment with people balanced for and against from a comment that nobody cares about.
If there is a way to see those totals, mod me down and call me an idiot, but please indicate how to see the thumbs-up/thumbs-down totals. - echimu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You missed ubuntu and google ;)
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+143. ?
4. Profit? - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I would like to write an entire book on comments on digg.
It is alot different than other sites (mainly becuase you can actually see how many people got a kick out of your comment, or hated it.)
I have had some very strange and telling experiences with this comment system... and it takes a while to learn how not to piss everyone off... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I think people like you need a guide explaining to them how easy it is to disable certain sections of the website. The VIDEO section, in your case.
- nx01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Here are a few terms to add:
1. DiggMobb. A group or groups of people that hold a common belief, and consider all other beliefs to be fundamentally incorrect, and those who voice contrary points of view to be mentally and/or physically deficient.
2. DiggMobbing. The act by the DiggMobb of mass condemnation of differing points of view. (i.e. "Those people are DiggMobbing that guy")
3. DiggMobbed. The after effect of DiggMobbing. (i.e. "That guy got DiggMobbed") - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'd say it overemphasize the importance of the content and the title. Friends & other means of generating diggs is all that matters - it's entirely about social networking.
This because the very high rate of new submissions means that a "socially unsupported" article only have something like 15 minutes to generate enough diggs to get on the frontpage - and that simply doesn't happen. Instead it's lost on page 5-11 or so in the sea of orphaned submissions, and unlikely to get a single more digg before the 24 hours are up.
By contrast a "socially supported" article does have the full 24 hours to generate enough diggs to reach the front page. - jeromehorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7A beginner's guide to Digg? Digg since it has become better known has been diluted to a steaming pile of "Doog", which I suggest should be it's newer, more modern hipper title.
The site has gone down hill rapidly. It's now populated less by true techs, geeks, and other misfits and more of the Keanu Reeves says "whoa" crowd, with less than interesting content ,and samey lackluster thoughtless comments. A guide is not needed, no, a nose for the smell of decomposing dog doo will serve you much better. The great thing is you won't have to search long in this vapid landscape to find the stench of the poo. In fact, this guide should is the first signs of the stale stench.
I want Digg back. Go away nincompoops, and take your stinky doogy smelling crap links with you. - xGORDOx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Ahhh, so now it makes sense that when I post a fact that opposes (D) talking points I'm instantly dugg down by like 20 people.
Thanks for the info. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you need help in understanding how this self-explanatory site works, chances are you won't find it anyway.
Now a guide for using a site like Reddit or learning how Slashdot's moderation system works? That's something I can get behind. The fact that those things aren't as self-explanatory is the reason they aren't as popular with the unwashed masses as Digg is. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16"1. Speak ill of crApple or any of it's products and crApples hoards of rabid, blind fanboys will digg you down and murder your dog."
Well I can't speak for anyone else, I'm just digging you down for using the term "crApple". I'll bet you're one of those guys who replaces the S in Microsoft with a dollar sign, too. - Nistavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So its pretty much all about hate...
"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." - Almighty Master Yoda - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I do think the whole introduction of "friends" was a huge mistake. First, eliminate that feature so it becomes much harder to just twitch digg all your friend's posts/articles.
Second, borrow from slashdot the notion of limited opportunity. On slashdot you are only given a limited number of mod points to use. How often you get mod points (indeed if you'll get them at all) depends on a) your karma and b) how you do in metamoderation. It should be possible for Digg to limit who can submit stories, and how often, based on a) the net of their digg points in the comments (karma) and b) the total number of diggs their stories get (metakarma).
The /. model is a good one, a REALLY good one. It often amazed me how really good they were at developing a system that worked much like a socially realistic situation. What also amazed me was how damn moronic the article choice was. If /. would only apply their skills to "web 2.0ifying" their story selection I'd dump Digg in a heartbeat. - bh1nd3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What are you talking about? The background is white..
- ArmyOfFun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ilyag
It would be nice if I could get more specific in what I get to block. For example, I already watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report on my TV, so I'd like to filter them out while still getting to see other video submissions.
On a similar note, one can block comments from particular users but you're still subjected to their submissions. It'd be nice if I could block certain user's submissions from showing up.
EDIT: Bah, my reply wound up in the wrong spot, my bad. - aura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Guide to getting your article dugg to the front page:
1. Make an article related to Digg
2. Put Digg in the title - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Express an opinion of your own and be dugg down to the depths of hell- just for anyone who didn't know.
- dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Digg.com was supposed to be similar to Slashdot.org but moderate by users, however most of the diggers are mindless open source supporter / microsoft haters who brag their os/softwares 500 times a day. Digg.com is now just a "Social"(Fanboys Only) bookmarking site instead of a democratic editorial system.
How to get on Digg.com frontpage? Please use the following guidelines...
1. Anything possitive about Apple/Linux/Firefox/Open Source
2. Anything negative about Microsoft.
3. No Facts required, just plain bias.
Please note that, just like Stephen Colbert, our dear digg.com fanboys thinks with their guts instead of their brain. - greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Digg? What is Digg? never heard of it.... Glad I came to Digg to find out about it...
- Nistavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Since digg users tend to fear the "Normal" world, it leads them to anger, which leads them to digg, which leads them to hate, and then they suffer till they decide to join the dark side. SO all digg users are Sith lords. - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One question I wanted answered and the article glossed over a bit is what does it mean to digg? Sometime I like an article or think it's important for others to see but disagree with the topic of the article. Does a Digg mean you like the article or does it say you agree with the content?
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3point four:
Watch out for people who can't spell - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah. To be honest I think the Digg system is inherently flawed - and the bigger it gets, the more the flaws show.
Like I said above, you can not get an article on the frontpage without social networking due to the volume of articles posted per time unit (new submissions get flushed to page 12 in less than an hour) and the sheer size of Digg also means it's a target for commercial interests. I'm sure e.g. some of the Wii & PS3 spam is just fanboyism, but I'd bet good money there's also marketing people involved, and no-one is telling me there's no registered Dems or Reps fanning the flames under the political news cauldron.
And now there's gaming sites like spikethevote, which exploit the "social networking is all that matters" aspect of Digg to game their articles to the frontpage. - UrlorJkron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Guide to commenting on digg:
Be useful, be funny, or be quiet. - EvilPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep doesn't work for me either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Technically no one is "stifled". If you want you can read every dugg-down comment and even vote them up (or down) if you like. My personal experience is that comments that are dugg down are usually stupid comments and not just a differing opinion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. It WOULD be nice to see if that +0 diggs is really the result of 250 votes that just happen to balance out or if it just got one - digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you use Firefox, install the Greasemonkey add-on, then this script:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2310
It'll let you filter Digg articles on keywords, and it's great.
Me, I'm using it to make gaming news readable by filtering out every article with the word "wii" in the title. - molten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Might as well ask here.. can anyone confirm that setting your default comment view to 'Sort by date (show all)' in Profile/Account settings doesn't actually work?
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wish more people would consider this.. so many people around here now are only digging stories they agree with, and burying those they disagree with- you should digg a story with quality content that you think others would like to see, whether you agree or disagree with the content. You are obviously more likely to think it is worthy if it agrees with you, but we should all make the effort.
Also, if a story is worthy of a bury, but you happen to agree with the subject of it, or it supports your favorite ideology/candidate/game console/OS, you should still bury it. - coloristpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its good read my think is looking for a good story that will tell you how to get more diggs i havent gotten over 10 diggs for any story i have put on and 10 is like a million to me.
Befor this week I only got like 1 digg. - digitalrift, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3digitalrift's guide to digg:
read articles but don't you DARE submit anything original-- it'll never get dugg number one, and two it'll be buried under five pages of dupe articles waiting to get dugg up.
(note: I am lazy therefore I am a hypocrite: I've never submitted anything on this site)
There's a certain trend to the front page of digg, requiring you to BLOCK certain catagories to actually see any news on here:
Apple
Apple
Apple
Bush is Satan
Bush Sucks
Republicans Suck
Republicans in General
Apple
MS Bash
MS Bash

remove the apple and politics subjects from your view and this site becomes a little bit more interesting
oh yeah, and don't you dare be insightful here, even if your view is right and has proof behind it. it'll be dug down to hell.
cheers, and happy digging. - skidude28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't read it... but it may help others. =D
- unitedstatians, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if you use curse words like for e.g say "Holy *****, *****, Christ","Jesus H. You will get dugg daowns. However, you don't have to see what I just wrote, if you turn on your PROFANITY FILTER ON! Thank you, digg staff! - IWriteCode, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8They left out that in order to get something dugg on the frontpage it either has to be Apple loving, left leaning, Bush hating, or a Borat, Olbermann, Colbert, or Stewart video.
