- GoKings, on 06/25/2008, -0/+39UK is far worse than the United States from a big brother standpoint...
- tj111, on 06/25/2008, -2/+38A family with the wrong members in control; that, perhaps, is as near as one can come to describing England in a phrase.
George Orwell - RedCt, on 06/25/2008, -0/+30I'm fine with this if we make all of the government higherups carry microphones around with them too that the public could listen into at any time.
Want to listen to us? Fine, we'll listen to you too. - zephc, on 06/25/2008, -2/+31Steps to regain privacy:
1) APPLY BRICK (A) TO CAMERA (B)
2) REPEAT STEP (1) AS NECESSARY - xBlackDust, on 06/25/2008, -4/+31***** the Goverment
- GPSCenter, on 06/25/2008, -3/+25Well there goes farting in public and trying to blame someone else : /
- Dundasbro, on 06/25/2008, -2/+23"TOILET CAMERA IS FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY"
- STPZ, on 06/25/2008, -3/+19There was a saying once, "People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."
- chuckDontSurf, on 06/25/2008, -1/+16Please stop using that ***** word.
- 321george, on 06/25/2008, -1/+14The more I hear about this stuff the more I want to throw a copy of 1984 at a politician however as I think about it it seems they already have a copy.
- Ryan121, on 06/25/2008, -0/+13Don't worry if you're arrested, you'll probably only get a fine or a suspended sentence. Last time I checked there were just over 20 prison places left.
- chedabob, on 06/25/2008, -0/+12Pfft, it'll hear you picking the brick up...
- CTK14A, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11Using the word 'sheeple' is so conformist.
- jgtg32a, on 06/25/2008, -1/+10I thought you were suppose to do that in 00 and 04?
- Inflammo, on 06/25/2008, -2/+11Oh *****, telescreens.
- crodragn, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8I'm ***** awake. Been awake since 8:00 AM. In fact, going by how much mountain dew I've consumed, I don't think you get much more awake then my present state. Now please stop telling me (and everyone else here) to wake up. If one cares about this stuff, one already knows, and if one doesn't care they aren't going to see you in the first place. Now go away.
- crowbar77, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8Scary stuff. Doesn't Washington have something similar already though? Only it can decipher words as well.
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -3/+11One step closer to having a police robot in your house "monitoring" for crimes.
- radikahl, on 06/25/2008, -2/+10Big brother is listening to you.
- npacheco, on 06/25/2008, -2/+10Benjamin Franklin, a founding father of the U.S.
- sk11, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7America: so, like, lets beat the ***** out of Iran.
Britain: I don't know, maybe we shouldn't?
America: why do you hate me?
Britain: hey, calm down, we're best friends, it's just that sometimes you go too far.
America: you're either with me or against me.
Britain: Be reasonable.
America: ***** you *****!
America: hey, random poor countries, I'll give you money if you'll be my friends.
Random poor countries: sure, yeah, ok.
* America unzips his pants *
America: good, now put this in your mouth... - gradivus, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7I wonder if the know 1984 was NOT a how-to manual.
- DarkDx, on 06/25/2008, -1/+8What's next? CCTVs in bathrooms?
Now that I think about it, it wouldn't be strange if they have actually done it. - roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6When the police are "too busy" to send people round to a burglary by people armed with knives, do you really think they'll send people?
Your cctv mugging death will be used as evidence in court and the murderers will get off after 2 years because all the jails are full. - jgtg32a, on 06/25/2008, -1/+6Ok so I'm not the only one who is seeing that.
Because it seems like there are a lot of people here who are from Europe and they tell me how bad all the wiretapping and everything is, and yeah it is.
But the way I see it is, Its illegal still in the US, but in Europe its perfectly legal for them to do it. - 2reflective, on 06/25/2008, -3/+8Don't worry. It will be for your own safety - to protect you from all those nasty terrorists.
- yogurtslinger, on 06/25/2008, -1/+6They let it happen, and so will the American populace.
- CrazedLeper, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5You first.

- ajb2015, on 06/25/2008, -1/+5i was reading something awhile back (maybe it was on digg), about how george orwell's house is now surrounded by some 300(?) cameras. its almost funny in a way.
- Archos, on 06/25/2008, -1/+5 "Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.
"Smith!" screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. "6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me."
- George Orwell, 1984.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... - jgtg32a, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4you noticed that too?
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -1/+5Man the "Big Brother" of in the UK is god damn scary. They are trying that camera ***** in 2 small cities here in the USA. Doesn't that make you feel just grand?
:( - cnot3, on 06/25/2008, -1/+5Being watched constantly is contradictory to essential liberty. All safety is temporary. There goes your argument. Do you honestly think the government will use this technology only to catch "criminals"?
- krnldmp, on 06/25/2008, -2/+6This will just help the police find the one guy that actually sees MI6 planting bombs in the tube stations next time, and make sure he takes his last ***** while running down the street.
- Curufir, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4Perhaps you haven't noticed, but it's the Scottish that are running the place.
- gradivus, on 06/25/2008, -2/+5Revolution. Rise up you lame ass fog breathers. Scotland Im looking at you, IRELAND had more balls.
- ukblacknight, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3CCTV have only helped 3% of convictions. Troubled area? Get the police away from their desks and get them on the streets.
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -1/+4I was talking in my sleep thats how they got me...
- harbls4everyone, on 06/25/2008, -1/+4The actual lyrics go "The government totally sucks, You motherf**ker. The government totally sucks." But i suppose the message is still the same.
- schneid4323, on 06/25/2008, -2/+5We are so royally screwed. They are more than welcome to toss us the baton.
- PopcornDave, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3No, that's Japan. Or maybe Germany.
- member57, on 06/25/2008, -4/+7Double Plus Good
- roodammy44, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3"Although crime statistics point to the fact that law-and-order issues are actually less of a problem now than in the past, the general public's perception remains one convinced that muggery and thievery hides behind every street corner."
If it was worse before, it must have been REALLY *****.
When almost 30 teenagers get shot in the first half of the year in london, something's wrong.
I've been on the raw end of this crime, and it really is bad - the statistics have been cooked.
CCTV DOESN'T SOLVE CRIME, SOCIAL MEASURES DO! THE CAMERAS AREN'T THERE TO SOLVE CRIME! - snapcase, on 06/25/2008, -1/+4God damnit people, it's a good quote but for the love of god at least get it right... I mean this one isn't even close. Besides all that Franklin probably never even said it.
From Wikipedia:
* "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." — Benjamin Franklin [A]
o A phrase commonly attributed to Franklin. This quotation is an excerpt from a letter written in 1755 from the Assembly to the Governor of Pennsylvania, and it may or may not have originated from Franklin. See Those who would give up Essential Liberty. - vikingscool, on 06/25/2008, -2/+5I feel bad for UK people who avid freedom of privacy.
- sk11, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2The cameras are there to help councils catch dog owners not scooping up, litterers, parents lying about which area they live in and other violations which incur fines. They're just an extension of speed cameras, a very lucrative revenue stream.
