- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Tivo does have it's issues, but I've tried many of the other "DVR" solutions from various cable providers and none of them come close to touching the Tivo. The Motorola units from Comcast were almost bearable, but they were buggy and tended to miss recordings and other annoyances. The interface for most of the Scientific Atlanta units is abysmal.. I returned that unit in less than a week out of sheer frustration.
I've tried to ditch Tivo several times (I was one of the people who kept getting "Red flags" by "accident" from the local Fox affliliate) but I always end up coming back because it's just easier to use and more reliable.
The major things Tivo needs to address are in it's next generation.. HD capability, dual tuners, faster broadband interaction for streaming, optical dolby/dts out. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm actually quite surprised it hasn't happened already. I mean, even though TiVo is an ailing company, they already have turned their name into a verb ("TiVo it..."). This shows that the brand is pretty well implanted into our culture and I'm really surprised somebody hasn't already picked them up, because it would probably be a pretty good company for someone to pick up
- HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think we should probably wait to see what the Series 3 box is like in the wild (sometime in the "second half of 2006" [according to TiVo's Bob Poni, aka TiVoPony]) before lamenting TiVo's demise. The Series 3's price point and subscription rates (assuming they'll be different than the previous Series' rates) will probably determine how well it does in the market. Unfortunately, if either or both are too high for consumer acceptance, they might just price themselves out of business/into a takeover. :(
PS: The spelling checker seems to be broken. - DVRDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't tell you many times I've seen analysts and news outlets speculate that TiVo is a takeover target. They probably had a report with the same conclusion in the can had TiVo lost the Echostar case. Boring. Let me know when it happens.
- racey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Barron's talking about technology? In February they were the ones saying Google's share price would go to $188.
- Nanobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IIRC, TiVo was in talks with Google and Yahoo! some time back about a possible takeover. But it sounded like the search companies weren't interested at the time. Perhaps they have doubts about TiVo's future now that other better positioned companies like Comcast are starting to creep into their territory.
As far as the software goes, TiVo is quite poorly designed in some areas (think about how long it takes to update the to do list sometimes) and a company like Google could really improve upon that, since they tend to focus a lot on scalability. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Tivo has always been the target of a buyout. Previously it was DirecTV and Comcast. There has been talk for years about this.
- b0rg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd consider it as a buy, but a risky buy.
Tivo has simply the best user interface *ever* in a consumer A/V product, and a product that everyone who tries, likes. But that might not be enough to make money. They have few friends in the broadcasting and programming industries because they force advertisers and programmers to be creative - and *nobody* likes change.
My magic 8-ball says that Tivo will be bought out, and cisco will be the purchaser. That's probably not a good thing for us TV viewers, since cisco has a habit of churning out great network hardware, but absolutely HORRIBLE software, with huge functionality problems, then abandoning the product a year or two later.
If Tivo falls by the wayside, I hope another company will get into the business. I've had Tivo since 2000, and when ours broke, it was traumatic, we forgot how bad it is to watch live TV. How many other pieces of computer/AV gear will get your wife to say "even if we just have to buy one, can't we replace it right now?" - filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RAAAAMONE, I am not an idiot, I am a pest
- d3bruts1d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken over by Google... they are, in a way, doing some of the same stuff. They are holding on to a large chunk of cash.
Google likes to record your stuff on the net, and TiVo likes to do the same thing on your TV. Keep in mind, TiVo sends back stats as to what you watch, record, etc (thumbs up/down). Combine the two, and I think Google would increase revenue from the DVR service, as well as new placements of advertisements. Now Google could display ads based not only on what you surf to, but also your viewing habits.
"Google it".... "TiVo it..." Is there much difference? - d3bruts1d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Also... tried to get this in as an edit, but missed it...
Google has had openings for TV related jobs... here is one: http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?answer=30312&query=cable&topic=0&type=cable
Plus, Google owns TV and DVR related domain names... http://googletv.com, http://googledvr.com, etc. - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Eh, I don't think it would be Google.
Google's more in the market for server hardware and some consumer software, but not really for consumer hardware.
My bet would be with Dell.
I don't think Dell has a PVR appliance yet (besides media center PCs). - nealibob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2In other news, SUVs get poor gas mileage. Nothing to see here, move along.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have my money on google! taking them over. (After they take over Yahoo! and the rest of the world)
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Just wondering aloud...it's a legitimate question as digg was sold in a certain way. krakenholm, do you wear diapers in all your posts?
- warrenpeace416, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I hope that if it's bought out, they leave the people alone to do their good work and really support them. I think that with the resources, they could do really well and release some really cool stuff. I love my two TiVo's and hate dealing with tv without it. All the little things they're building in, like the HME apps, make it really unique amongst all the imitators. The interface and control are a pleasure to use. How often do you think that?
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2WWaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ,sniff, sniff.... waaaaaaaaaaaaa
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Sounds like every other "WTF I SUBMITTED THIS BLA BLA BLA" statement. Deal with it. And I have been diaper free for 3 months, two days, and 4 hours, thank you very much.
- robwistar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7clearly the algorithm doesn't like you
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3It's all a conspiracy.
Or maybe it's just that you're not THE ONE.
Go see the Oracle. - Bigcat151, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1so buy or sell?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4could you stop preceeding all of your comments with RAAAAMONE, please? You sound like an idiot
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2I don't know how I feel about this.. If it makes Tivo cheaper, then "YAY". But if Tivo just gets worse, then "BITTORRENT".
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1no comprendo
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1osjpr, the number doesn't matter. The speed of the diggs matters and also it is sometimes up to people at Digg that decide what should get to the front page. Note that this story has been Dugg by Kevin Rose and see the truth
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1RAAAAMONE, dump a log in my directv receiver.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1This had 25 diggs when it made the main page. I submitted a story that has 32 diggs and it never made the main page. wtf! There is something really wierd about the way stories make it to the front.

What is Digg?
