- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have only one way to communicate on Digg, and that's with the words you type.
Poor writing skills are embarassing to the poster, and lower the readability of Digg. Could you listen to the radio if the announcer stuttered and mumbled the whole time?
Would you watch the news if the anchor was a fat sweaty guy in a t-shirt with gravy on his face, fumbling through the stories?
If you can't spell, don't understand punctuation, and get confused by grammar, get someone to help you. I'm tired of people hiding behind "you know what I mean." No, I don't always know what you mean. Unless, that is, you mean to look like an idiot. - Sco0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, cooly story i never knew that was how they gained Number 1 in the charts, i heard a lot of hype about their album though. It's good.
- agnoster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4and @KNon - as long as you're being pedantic, do it right. "Everyone" represents many people, but is singular, grammatically speaking. (Indefinite pronoun? Is that the word?)
Try saying "Everyone are good spellers" and you'll see the problem :-) - InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is absolutely unbelievable.
Over half of the comments on this article are criticising the grammar of the previous comment. I'm hardly one to say this, but stick to the damn topic, please! Most of the time you can make out what's trying to be conveyed, so just leave it at that. Grammar lessons should be left up to them to take, not for you to teach. For starters, I highly doubt every single person here has an English degree.
So on topic now, I think this does go to show that DRM really shouldn't be the future. But that unfortunately it will be, because anything proving otherwise will be shot down in flames by the RIAA and MPAA. Seriously, they're worse the the Amish. - tgraham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The real story is not that they allowed people to distribute demos online (not new) but that they're a bloody good band, putting out great music. It doesn't matter whether or not a band allows online downloading if they're not any good.
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They've sold a lot more than 120,000, try 350,000.
And yes, RIAA take note. "cause he's a scumbag don't you know!" - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I certainly can't deny this, it DOES help that they had almost every music publication imaginable hyping them. They also made TV appearance before their album was even out... I'd like to think that internet downloading helped them out, which I'm sure it did a little bit... but they have been far too hyped from the media to think that their success was anything other than inevitable.
- jsmiley17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, not everyone is the world's best speller. This article just goes to show how well online music sales are doing compared to traditional CD buying.
- Onyx26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard all the hype about the Arctic Monkeys and then I heard the Dance Floor song and didn't reckon all that much to it. But the hype kept coming and in the end I decided to listen to the album. And what an album! It reminds me of when Pulp released Common People. Gritty northern lyrics from a Sheffield band and subjects that you can really relate to. It's a shame the media have hooked onto the success and are currently whoring a band that so clearly hit the big time without any media help. I wish them a lot of success! And after listening to the album about 10 times I ordered it this morning.
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This band is freaking awsome! I'm definatley going to buy their album some time this week!
- maccalvin5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only 880,000 to go for it to matter......
- fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It could also have to do with 'they're a good band'.
Although I haven't listened to them myself: Just making an assumption!
I don't condone piracy and I certainly wouldn't use the excuse "well it's crappy music so I shouldn't have to pay for it" (yet you take the time to download it and listen to it? Then pay!).
Either way: Props to this band. :) - 12Volts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Listened to the album for weeks off the net - then bought it the day it was released here in New Zealand. Who says the internet harms music sales? Great band and album but not sure most Americans will get it. All the best bands seem to be from UK or Oz at the moment (ok Kings of Leon as a major exception). America - it's Thirsty Merc this summertime down under.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah - missed the last paragraph - undigg. :/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for bypassing record labels.
One of my favorite artists is only online -> ninagoddess.com - HighDecibel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I admit I'm not a fan of the arctic monkeys, similar to all the other british bands atm. But indeed they have got a lot of hype.
Hell I got into linkin park cos one of my friends gave me a minidisc of hybrid theory. And of course this would be frowned upon now. The fact is 'Original' copies don't sell a band. 95% of my taste in music is based on others (what they suggested). P2P for example was the only way in which I would likely have purchase all the albums I have. I think the RIAA have gotten onto one simple fact.
a) I don't use p2p, i only listen to a few bands: I spend only a small amount of money on music
b) I use p2p, I listsen to tonnes of bands: I spend a great deal of money
c) I get sued, I spend almost 10 times the amount in settling with the RIAA.
The final scenario is what they latched onto. They realise they can make far money from sueing me. At least thats the theory. In actual fact they lose these people as customers from that point on. - thalion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good digg, good music.
- justinvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/a/arctic-monkeys/whatever-people-say-i-am-thats-what-im-not.shtml
- thelightjockey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Artic Monkeys eat, shoots and leaves a trail of music at the top of the charts.
Woo! - topcataj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They weren't internetsavvy at all. They just gave out freebie CD's at gigs and the fans did the rest.
And for those moaning about them being hyped in the media, the only reason the media picked up on them so quickly is because they were selling out gigs all the time due to the number of people who heard and liked their songs on the internet.
Only after that did mags like NME pick up on them and start the hype. Before that Zane Lowe played them a few times on Radio 1, which is where I heard about them, but there was nothing about the songs being availible on the internet, and was months before 5 Minutes with the Artic Monkeys came out, let alone ...dancefloor.
Worth pointing out, it's not just that their music was on the internet that they became popular, a lot of other new bands have had stuff online, yet I've not heard of anything like this monkey effect before. Perhaps it may just be that their music is quite good too? Or at least, a lot of people like it, I know it's not on other peoples wish list ;) - Ajzzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bad music, which makes it even more impressive and proves the RIAA more wrong.
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually it sold in excess of 300k in the first week, it was 120k in the first day
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1) Everyone complaining about grammar..... SHUT THE HELL UP. No one cares. It is the internet, not ***** Princeton. I come home from school to chill and read a few stories and opinions on digg. My english teacher isn't even as nazi as you all are. As long as you can make sense of it without disturbing the overall flow and meaning of the information, its _fine_. Woah, you know rules to English. A winner is you.
2) Badass article, I am going to give this band's music a try now.
3) ***** the RIAA. -azar"
How old are you? You sound like a 13 year old child. - bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+014 year old torontonian
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh. It's true. I never would have heard System of a Down with P2P. Now I have bought all their CDs. Not the only band either. I use Bittorrent to download full albums of an artist that has a couple songs I like, then if I like most of the album I'll buy it. If I don't I'll just keep the one or two songs I like.
Yay P2P! - petiejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The music's okay, but I probably wouldn't personally pay for an album unless I heard something better than the two "hit singles." However, this definitely gets a digg because it shows that downloading != decreased sales. I don't know if you can say that download == increased sales, but it definitely didn't kill the sales like what the RIAA wants the world to believe.
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oasis' "Be Here Now" is still the UK's fastest selling album, not the monkeys..."
Your sadly wrong. The first Hearsay (Popstars) album sold more in a shorter period. It has held the record since.
Well done to the monkies for breaking Hearsay's record, shame the album isnt that good. - o2sk8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not even going to lie. I downloaded two of their albums today after hearing one of their songs on someones MySpace (yeah, it's a guilty pleasure), but before I saw this article. More power to them.
- tsukiyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A brit friend of mine recommended Arctic Monkeys the other day, so I downloaded it on a torrent site. One listen was all it took for me to be totally hooked. Said friend has arranged for a copy to land here in snowy Montreal because I want to encourage the band.
Digg for great band + up yours RIAA
and All Brit Rock > (most) American music - trebor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@azar;
Your English teacher doesn't care about using proper grammar? I pity you. - justinvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Artic Monkeys is a really stupid name for a band. There is no way I can even imagine a backstory that would make it any cooler. Downloading the album now, after reading too much crappy hype about them everywhere.....
Here's a review from Pitchdork ( - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The arctic monkeys are pretty damn good, you yanks should download their album!
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To bad the RIAA (bastards) wont take notice of it, and pull somthing out of their ass saying "The internet had nothing to do with that lolololol".
- fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait the article doesnt mention anything about them using illegal downloads to raise awareness, maybe it does elsewhere on the net.
- StevePoling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the greatest threat to the not-yet-established artist is obscurity, not piracy. and the greatest threat to the established artist is not piracy by competition from obscure talents that are better than their own.
but gucci shod record execs can get more money and work less hard by resigning established artists than by finding not-yet-established talent. and thus music sounds all alike. - mad_raven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great album too bad they left out ciggarate smoke
- sirplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is a great record, what are you guys hatin about? well, that's the beauty of music. one man's Exile On Main Street is another man's Britney Spears? er.. let's get back to the spelling issue.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another post that proves the RIAA is full of crap. How much longer can they continue to lie?
+digg - monticello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, could this title be more misleading?
Plus they're on Franz Fedinand's label - tombland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oasis' "Be Here Now" is still the UK's fastest selling album, not the monkeys...
- Beautyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA is a US only disease, they have no authority anywhere else but there.
- mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ericesque huh huh.. he said *****-phone.
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well what a surprise i get home from exams and what do i find my story on the front page.
Thanks. - fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsome!!! I love it when the government is wrong.
- lostinthefire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool story, STICK IT TO THE MAN
- punkdigerati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"UGH...digg needs editors!"

You're taking the idea of writing skills to an extreme. I never said no Digg user should ever have a typo. I said that the only way we communicate here is through our typed words.
As to your point that some people are not native English speakers, or have learning disabilities, fair enough. I have no trouble reading poor English if the person states that they aren't fluent. I'm sure I'd have trouble in their language, too.
For everyone else, should I just assume "learning disability?" - danjal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i read it outsold the Beatles.. now I'd like to point something out.. it's 2006.. you understand how easy it is to mass produce a CD? hell kids rip there own and download them off the net, so making a CD to the masses is next to nothing.. plus sold on the Internet.. dam it man, were the ***** was the Internet in the nineteen sixties! i guess maybe some of you can understand my annoying... dare i say rage, at the mass media taking pot shots at the other British albums that didn't sell as much on there first.. and more so those that never had Cd's, but records to produce as there first...
