- d3sapar3cid0, on 05/12/2009, -4/+123they do it for the lulz.
- sisterofspin, on 05/12/2009, -1/+115Reminds me of the P-P-P-Powerbook prank:
http://www.zug.com/pranks/powerbook/ - stoanhart, on 05/12/2009, -0/+94Wow, there are some awesome stories in that article. The lengths some people go to for a laugh... sending a guy across Africa where he gets stranded for two weeks!
- erasedgod, on 05/12/2009, -2/+81Right, as opposed to the scammers using the victims as their own personal piggy bank?
If you feel so bad for them, send them your money. - chokitofrito, on 05/12/2009, -3/+76I actually managed to get some Nigerian dude to send me 20 bucks and a carved Scooby Doo mystery van. Then, I sent him my "PS3". and by "PS3" I mean a couple of aging 1990 Playboy issues, an AOL CD and an instruction booklet for our washing machine.
- teamben158, on 05/12/2009, -0/+72Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa....
You sent them free pr0n? What's wrong with you!?! - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+61They are karma's little helpers.
- chokitofrito, on 05/12/2009, -0/+58Free "classic" porn. :D
And I cut out the toots and the hoots with an xacto knife. - fantasmacanino, on 05/12/2009, -0/+54***** the scammers, nobody chooses to be born poor but everyone has the choice to do the right thing. You wanna make a living the wrong way you're gonna get ***** along the way. Kudos to the scambaiters.
- eatsushi, on 05/12/2009, -0/+42This will bring my kids an I closer together!
"Daddy? Can I bait a scammer today?"
"Sure son, what continent would you like to send him to this time?" - poppabk, on 05/12/2009, -1/+43Yep its the poor Africans that have access to computers, have enough education to be able to speak English and who have access to lists of email addresses, can create mock-ups of official documents, have ties internationally etc. You sound extremely condescending to the "poor africans", like they are little children who are not capable of understanding or controlling their own actions, when in fact they are fully competent adults who are generally members of highly organized criminal syndicates.
- inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+40If all the trolls on the internet moved to this profession, they could probably wipe out the scammer population. Not the crappy trolls; the good ones who can troll a message board without the board knowing they're a troll, and can utterlly destroy online communities. They have the ability to psychologically get under someone's skin using just words. Just think if they put that ability to something like this. They still get the lulz of pissing random people off and they do a good service in the process.
- tmyprod, on 05/12/2009, -0/+38you should have glued all the "good" pages together.
Also, do you now have a pile cut out "toots and hoots" on your desk? - SteelChicken, on 05/12/2009, -2/+36Yes, poor Africans, stealing and robbing people of money. Im sorry, but thieves deserve no sympathy.
Perhaps you could send them some money since you feel so bad for them?
Thats what I thought, chump. - angelgabe, on 05/12/2009, -1/+35I think I might have a new hobby.
- ryansmith18, on 05/12/2009, -1/+28@lepetitmousse
"Baiting makes them no better than the scammers themselves"
Actually, it very much does make them better. If two people attempt to scam one another, one of them has to be better than the other eventually, right? They can't stalemate forever.
Also, you're some all new kind of ass for showing sympathy for the scammers. They ruin lives, and you feel bad for them. Wtf. - elo91, on 05/12/2009, -0/+25One of these guys needs to tell a scammer to dress up in a pirate costume and meet him in Mogadishu.
- Irishsmurf, on 05/12/2009, -3/+27They are cheating the vunerable people of society for their own profit.
I have no sympathy whatsoever. - alexanEmpire, on 05/12/2009, -0/+22Best recorded punishment of a scammer...ever!
- ryansmith18, on 05/12/2009, -1/+23@lepetitmousse Oh we've got compassion. We have compassion for our parents and grandparents who aren't savvy enough to know when they are walking into an internet scam.
As for the scammers, I'm not gonna feel sorry for "they are situation," since they chose to make it worse on themselves by picking up a low life profession. Sure, their lives are hard, poverty stricken, AIDS is abundant, etc. But the minute they take the attitude "Oh poor me, my life sucks, maybe I'll enrich it by scamming old unsuspecting people" is the minute I lose that compassion for them. - ichbinladen, on 05/12/2009, -1/+22Then give them all your money, *****.
- everywhereasign, on 05/12/2009, -0/+20Apparently he still posts on Something Awful. One site said they left the story with the same ending because it added a cool scary vibe.
Jeff is fine. - jserio, on 05/12/2009, -0/+18Looks like he's still alive: http://www.myspace.com/iameljefe
- anexanhume, on 05/12/2009, -3/+20FTA:
'"My initial reason for baiting was to give myself an outlet for the practical jokes that I am 'too old' to play on my dog/little sister/friends/neighbor's cat," a 32-year-old baiter who goes by blah told Ars.'
You go blah. - rkho, on 05/12/2009, -0/+17You surely must not have been visiting TheScamBaiter at all. Ever hear of the story where the admin lured a scammer into accepting over ten freight shipments, costing the scammer at least ten grand? The scammer received broken washing machines and boxes of bricks. All on borrowed money from other scammers. Think about that.
- nudedos, on 05/12/2009, -1/+16I love the pictures this guy gets.
http://www.419eater.com/images/kadijat_jubril1a.jp ...
From the Article:
http://www.419eater.com/html/kadijat_jubril.htm - decyx, on 05/13/2009, -0/+14Being born into a bad situation is a poor excuse for criminal behavior. My parents emigrated out of a war-torn Vietnam with almost no money or clothes and lived in a garage while they worked crappy jobs in order to raise a spoiled brat like me and send money back home to their families. I have a lot of admiration, empathy, and compassion for those who still manage to live honestly despite having limited resources and none for those who take the easy way out so quit being an arrogant douchebag who thinks he's more enlightened than the rest of the world.
- roijen, on 05/12/2009, -0/+14Forget Carmen Sandiego this could be the greatest geography education game. It can be done IRL!
- SDM187, on 05/12/2009, -0/+12first time reading this, i must be new, but like... did they kill that Jeff guy in the end?
- StatMech, on 05/12/2009, -1/+13"3) Finally, and most disturbingly, Jeff was not heard from again. I personally e-mailed him for permission to run his story on ZUG, but after an initial response, I never heard from him again. All of his Web sites have come down, and he is nowhere to be found."
:( - KORGOTH, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11I guess that would leave you with a pile of *****.
- Thuban, on 05/12/2009, -0/+11From lepetitmousselepetitmousse: "The real crime here is how is situation in which they have grown up, and that is the whole world's fault.
Apparently there is no compassion on digg, however."
That's some serious crippling empathy you suffer from *****.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cri ... - elmuerte17, on 05/12/2009, -0/+11It is sad that Nigerians scam honest people out of their money.
- therealdoug, on 10/08/2009, -0/+11@lepetitmousse
"The real crime here is how is situation in which they have grown up, and that is the whole world's fault."
We tried helping, but one of the last ships we sent with humanitarian aid supplies was hijacked by Somali pirates. I say we shift the blame to them. - brucealmighty, on 05/12/2009, -0/+10Just don't forget that these are not nice people and it's not a game to them. They may not be too smart but they are pretty crafty and very mean. If you let them find out your real identity and address you could put yourself and your family in jeopardy. These people don't follow any rules - if they see an opportunity to cash in they are not limited to just 419 or other non-violent con games. Do some research and take some precautions before you start 'playing around' with these jerks.
- kocurejd, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10Dugg for "toots and hoots"
- Dr.Neko, on 05/12/2009, -0/+10I remember reading this prank a long time ago. I'm still wondering what happened to Jeff.
- DismantleRepair, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10You can use Google Earth to find and track his possible whereabouts!
- kawaiirobo, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9I have real sympathy for Africans that are unfortunate enough to be born in war torn countries and extreme poverty, that's why I buy Toms shoes. I however do not have any sympathy for someone who decides to rob the innocent and ignorant.
- FXNGLAS, on 05/12/2009, -0/+9That ***** is priceless!
- cowboy86, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9I did this like 5 years ago and got cursed out in the worst grammar possible ending with "mad goat on you." Which I assume is some kind of voodoo curse *****.
That is all. - MattBD, on 05/12/2009, -0/+9That's not a bad idea actually - there are some extremely skilled trolls around, and at least that way they're doing something productive with their time.
- SDM187, on 05/12/2009, -0/+8What about the pumps and the bumps, did you just let those go?
- Hyde311, on 05/12/2009, -2/+10You should have masturbated on it.
- muka3d, on 05/12/2009, -0/+8Here's an example: http://www.419eater.com/html/bigman.htm
Long, but worth the read... this guy gets the scammers to carve him a bust, and even video tape a Monty Python script... - Kate1240, on 05/12/2009, -0/+8What happened to Jeff?
- jdmCrush, on 05/13/2009, -0/+8The P-P-P-Powerbook prank is probably my all-time favorite internet story. Period. Absolutely brilliant.
- Kate1240, on 05/13/2009, -0/+8OMG! I was worried about him. Thanks for the update guys!
- Ddraig, on 05/12/2009, -0/+7These guys were on NPR some months ago. I can't quite remember the title of the show but their account of the safari to Darfur was hilarious.
Not sure if this is it but it looks similar. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ...
Found another: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ... - kamikaze134, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7That's because you're a Nigerian scammer.
