No kidding! When I was a kid, I was taught that the people of the U.S. were free and that everybody else wore gray, worn out prison uniforms, ate dung for dinner, had to wear shackles all the time, and all wished they were me (so eat those dern potatoes).
Grow up and spend some time living places like Japan and India, I noticed how much the U.S. is like that shackled-gray-prison-uniform-wearing-dung-eating-homeless-hippy they kept accusing everybody else of being. - KUKBAHLAM, on 11/23/2007, -0/+4So many people die in car crashes due to people talking on the cell phone and running red lights. I would argue that mounting one on my car could potentially save lives.
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"What isnt illegal in the U.S.?"
Sad but true my friend. - bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope the powers that be make this stuff legal for movie theaters. If you're a doctor and are on call, stay home. Order PPV porn for all I care. I don't need your whiney bitch-ass patients interrupting Kong with their noisy dying. And parents with little punk kids who can't be babysat for 2 hours incommunicado need to raise their kids better - grandma should slap them upside the head and lock them in the bathroom if they can't behave for that long. Screw all of you and open your stupid celophane candy wrapper already instead of drawing it out for 5 minutes by tearing it a little at a time. Then shut up and watch the movie.
- sabin421, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3No one has ever been prosecuted in the US for jamming cell phones, so while it is illegal, the FCC won't "find you and give you a severe beating".
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -1/+4Otto said: > This is *major* illegal in the US, and yes, the FCC will indeed find you and give you a severe beating for this sort of thing. Local HAM radio operators will very rapidly detect you, report your sorry ass, and then gladly help the feds track you down. You're looking at a minimum $11,000 fine a one-year jail term.
Nope. It may be illegal, but you're very unlikely to get caught unless you're really stupid. The power output for an effective cellphone jammer need only be in the milliwatt range. This signal is then swept in frequency and modulated with noise - very difficult to track and locate.
The FCC wouldn't have a clue how to start to find a small jammer, and the range of transmission will be so limited that they wouldn't even know that you're doing it.
Radio Hams generally couldn't find their own backsides with two hands, and are mostly stupid ex-CBers who've bought an expensive Japanese box and enjoy shouting at each other 'round the world and annoying their neighbours with interference! - oldtech, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3and this happens a lot near you? when's the last time anyone near you called emergency services? 1% of the time...maybe. low power
jammers to stifle the bubblehead 10 feet away are not a bad thing. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh an the guy who wrote the article hates europe a lot. He is an ***** for his comments. His comments may acceptable if not agreed with in the proper forum but this cellphone jamming article is NOT the place for such ignorance.
- Decus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3would be better is I could actually see the schematics
- tasadar24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Illegal, but I'd like it just in case somebody's being really annoying. Turn the sucker on long enough to hear that person lose connection and then turn it back off.
Oh and Glitch... My god you really have to go back to grammar school. My head is spinning after reading your post. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Who cares that its illegal. If it is, so what? Has that stopped anybody in the past?
This is interesting because could it possibly be used as a wifi jammer? That would not be fun, but it would be interesting to see.
tidejwe, couple of things:
1. The doctor thing applies to in-hospital only; who the ***** would use this in a hospital? you arent allowed to use cell phones in a hospital anyway.
2. i dont know for sure, but i doubt pagers run on the same frequency as cdma/gsm phones considering its really different tech.
3. If cells dont cause harmful interference to other objects (in general, because they do) would this? I know cells conform to fcc rules but i cant imagine this being much different with out adhering to fcc rules.
4. This could be an effective tool in the reclimation of our spaces. Do you know how tired i am of hearing cells go off in class? or during an exam? The average person is too stupid to either, a. remember or b. respect times when they should put their phone on vibrate.
I couldnt care less if this was illegal. I am not going to make one because it looks tougher than my willingness to put effort into such a device. But if i could buy one for a reasonable price, I would. And it would always be on when i am in class.
Go ahead, turn me in...you wont be able to call the cops cuz ill just jam your cellphone. Like you would actually be able to pinpoint it to me anyway, it would just waste your time, which i would also like to do. - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For thousands of years, humanity has survived without cell phones. Now everyone has gone cell phone stupid. I still think the best place for a cell phone is up yer arse - sideways.
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seeing "teh ghey^" followed by "The TL074 quad op-amp (U1) sweep generator of the cellular jammer exciter is based around a few simple op-amp building blocks." makes my head asplode.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to mention all this cell phone radiation crap out there. GSM has 10x the amount of radiation than CDMA just imagine what chaos would come over america if they switch to GSM only to find out they are going to fry their brain! lol
Also not mention the privacy concerns of the left, they'd go nuts if they switched over to GSM from CDMA because of how incredibly insecure GSM is vs CDMA voice transmissions!
And actually the CDMA goes at 144kbps may bad, but the 3rd version or 3G or WCDMA is in fact 2mbs and GSM operators in europe are already adopting WCDMA but of course they can't keep the same name as us Americans, that would just be insulting thus they are going to call it UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) - infernoclan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Best for restaurants.
- AnotherName, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i would love to do this to people at work.
- neggbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thats cool, I don't think I would be able to build one of these but still cool
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That would have been a good project for my computer engineering class.
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great for thoes people behind you that talk about the most stupidest crap
- Backlash, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2Not a huge fan of howstuffworks but...
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone-jammer.htm - infernoclan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What isnt illegal in the U.S.?
- infernoclan, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2All I could find was a cache link, so print directions off while you have a chance.
- TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A cell phone jammer for movie theatres and performance centres would be great. People who are on-call should not attend events at those locations and should be sued if they do attend an event then never get the call (doctor for example, most people should just get fired). Some restaurants could also get cell jammers to improve/restore the ambiance of fine dining. Most places do not need jammers, they need a CSR to talk to people who are being obnoxious (for whatever reason).
Establishments that use cell/pager jamming should have some notice by every entrance (or ticket window/machine) that advises potential patrons. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Onward to the nearest movie theater!
- edzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone should find a way to modify an ipod to do this.
- sabin421, on 11/04/2007, -1/+2Snitch.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So tell me, for those who think people talking on cellphones violate their space....
What is the difference between two people standing next to each other having a conversation near you, and a person on a phone next to you? Do you know like the phone because you are nosy and can only hear one side of the conversation?
I guess I just don't understand, people on phones don't bother me at all. Sometimes I think they are funny depending on what they're talking about, but I have never been annoyed by one. In the last 10 years, I've only heard ONE phone ring in the theatre, it's just not a problem.
Also, these jammers are not FCC approved and they are illegal. While that doesn't matter for most things, I'm all about disobeying authority, this device could interfere with a pacemaker or internal defibrilator. How would you like to be playing with this at a mall, and then accidentally kill someone? You laugh, but the possibility is there. A friend of mine designs these things, and while they try to make sure no common radio interference will mess them up, the truth is that they are very susceptable to interference. None of these devices have been tested to see if they mess up from a cell-phone jammer, therefore, no precautions have been made in the heart device to guard against them.
If a business doesn't want people on the phone inside their building, then they can line the walls with a faraday cage. They have wallpaper out there that blocks RF. That way, it only affects people inside their building, won't affect heart devices, and it's legal. - sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Time to fix that annoying cell phone in church."
How about just fixing that annoying church ?
I just ordered one of the pocketable ones.
I will be jamming dumb blondes and talkative idiots at the stop lights in a town near you very soon.
I spoke to my buddies at the pub tonight and all can't wait. We're all just about done with idiot teenagers talking absolute nonsense on their parents minutes.
All that ends in two days for me. Good riddance. - mkengstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, ***** who take their cell phones into movie theaters are really annoying. However, there may be lots of other people in that same theater that have their cell phones (**on vibrate**) for important work purposes.
Sure, if you're the lucky type of person that has specific "on call" hours, you can sit at home and be available for calls during that time period. However, many types of people have 24/7 on call status. Yes, it sucks, but it would suck more having to stay home at ALL times.
My husband is a manager for a group home, and is basically on 24/7 "holy crap, ***** hit the fan" status. We need to go out and have a normal life, but like any non-*****, he turns his phone on vibrate when in a theater. Though once he forgot and it rang during Serenity - I almost punched him in the head. ;)
sishgupta: Doctors need to be on call when *outside* of a hospital. If you are ever in a case where you need to notify your obstetrician that you're going to have a baby, better hope they're not sitting in a movie next to someone with a jammer. - phonejammer, on 02/23/2008, -0/+0You can get a phone jammer here

it was delivered to me in 3 days, I would recommend it to anyone who needs some peace and quiet.
I can finally sitting in the train without being disturbed by loud cell phone users. - Cajhne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Anything ever made can be used for "good" or "evil". Cell phone jammers are no different. It offers valuable defense as a LAST RESORT. Does anyone every try asking the person to talk somewhere else (nicely)? I know a lot of people who complain up and down, while the "offender" has no clue he/she is pissing anyone off. 90% of the people I've asked were completely oblivious to their causing annoyance. :)
100% of those people quickly discontinued their conversations or moved elsewhere when asked reasonably to do so, and moreover apologized for it at the same time!
It's that 10% that you've asked that are either too upset to care that they are essentially bothering everyone in the room (Are they, though? Is it just you?) that laugh/smirk/sneer at you and tell you to get lost (or worse), that you can reasonably defend yourself against with this type of technology.
The law isn't going to be able to track you down if you briefly turn it on and off again, to kill a cellphone call. This has the advantage of making the aforementioned (and now duly notified) offender, think that their cellphone is getting bad reception (which it will be ;) ), and what do most people do when they are getting bad reception? They go elsewhere! :) In this case, the effective range is only about 30ft anyway!
So, as long as you aren't walking around with this thing turned on, and aren't being an ***** yourself, it's a perfectly reasonable thing to have and use.
Be kind to your fellows. You'll find most of the time you will not need a cellphone jammer, but rather just a respectful request.
My favorite: "Excuse me, your speakerphone is a little loud. Would you mind turning it down a little?"
Be considerate of others, and you won't have your cell-phone conversation clipped by someone with better manners than you (if they've already asked).
PS- Does anyone else wish Nextel would suddenly vanish off the face of the Earth along with ALL of it's "walkie-talkies"? There is only one purpose for using one of these devices: to prove to the world what an inconsiderate prick you are, blaring half your irrelevant conversation through a bad loud-speaker to a roomfull of strangers. Yes, this is annoying. People will hate you. :)

and btw, if its an EMERGENCY! they arent paging a doctor becuase he wont get anywhere in time. - Cajhne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0If you can find out who did it. :) Chances are if you've annoyed one, you've annoyed many. You may have to beat your way thorugh a lot of innocent people before you get the right one (if you even see them).

- diggismycollege, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome i wish i was that smart but i would buy one from someone
- Badfysh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure, but I think I sense a bit of hostility towards Europeans... I think he should get a passport and see where he comes from.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would these things work in a car because I've lost count of the number of times I've almost been hit by some yammering idiot.
Also, I think the website's been hacked by some self-righteous prick. That would explain the bizarro comments in it and why we can't access it right now. - furatail, on 06/23/2008, -0/+0I'd love this for my office. There is just 2 of us so I guess he think it alright to talk on his cell phone for a good 5 hours out of a 7 hour workday. He even brought his charger so he can never miss a beat. I'd love to read a book or perhaps do some art, but I just can't concentrate while hearing about some party where some dude got drunk and mated with some girl who is now living with my coworker and she has a crush on him, but is dating some other guy in Ohio...
To top it all off, he speaks as if he was outside. Even maxing out my headphones will not drown him out and I am forced to deal with the pain of blistering away my hearing. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I could rate my own comment to get rid of it I would lol, just realized I just quoted someone saying CDMA is better than GSM lol I thought he meant GSM was better than CDMA sorry orabox, I feel like the idiot now. lol
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who gives a crap? The documents haven't been available since this thing was posted.
We don't need any more specious "it's illegal" and "what about doctors" blather. No one is guaranteed the right to have cell-phone reception at all times, period. If you want low-risk communication, sit by a land line if a life-and-death situation exists, just as people have done for decades. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Besides CDMA is more efficient than GSM"
orabox,
If you would have read the other comments before yours you'd realize I already debunked your claim of superiority with undeniable proof, so umm yea shut up bout things you do not know, til you are the one that did the research first hand, instead of gabbering off about what he said she said he said kinda thing.
And sorry to hear that one of these devices caused somes fathers pacemaker to screw up killing him. Hopefully they can find a way to protect pacemakers from this sort of thing in the future, illegal or not I would not feel safe if I had to have one knowing that some idiot could kill me unintentionally or not. - HecknJive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to all the whiney self important people that are so concerned you'll miss a call; check your voicemail, ace.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im gona build one
cuz
its gona be fun 2 watch ppl that seem 2 die if theres no cellphone signal
better yet if thers somebody that can figure out how to change the carrier name to say, "stop talking so much u *****"
then iwould totaly get the stuff i need for one 2day! - orabox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Dude is a pro GSM anti Europe type. Like the info but his politics suck.
Dig withdrawn for a racist prick’s site.
Besides CDMA is more efficient than GSM - schlagzeuger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1or movie theaters. people in Miami love to talk on their phones during movies.
