- mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -29/+202As Wikipedia states, "May 1, 2007 is the day that Digg died."
-=|Mgkwho - greenlight2001, on 10/12/2007, -25/+81So angry this one is.
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -16/+66umm people are sponsored all the time, i dont see how this is different from any other ad you see on the digg site
- catch22, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50This isn't breaking news. They've been pre-rolling ads for HD-DVD a while before this happened. Is there a connection? Certainly. It is not, however, as if HD-DVD paid Kevin or digg or anyone in power at the company off within the last day or two in order to have the submissions censored. I don't agree with the censorship, and I think that this huge reaction is good and will probably sway Kevin and digg back towards a more liberal policy, but this isn't some sort of crazy big brother conspiracy that some people are making it out to be.
- clogger3030, on 10/12/2007, -21/+63What's wrong with getting paid for advertising?
- puttly, on 10/12/2007, -32/+72Maybe you would like to pay for bandwidth bills that cost thousands of dollars every month?
- DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47What's purportedly wrong is their apparent bias.
- jalenack, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45This is just about the opposite of BREAKING news.

- riknik, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29My question is, "Who gives a *****?" Sponsorship doesn't prove or disprove the neutrality and credibility of a body.
- JC-Sharp, on 10/12/2007, -30/+49Since when in the blue ***** is this "BREAKING".. They have had sponsors from HD -DVD for a few times. Buried for mis-use of Breaking, and because im sick of this stupid story.
I dont ***** care about your little code, ***** google it, ***** it's everywhere now. Let Digg be digg. - fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3009 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C1 minus 1
- galegovision, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19F your mom!!
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15A message to Jay, Kevin, and the other Digg and Rev3 crew:
It was once stated in a Diggnation episode that your only agreement with your sponsors is to accept their support in exchange for saying a few words and displaying an image, that sponsorship wouldn't affect treatment of content on Digg or Rev3. I can only hope that this remains true, and that your censorship of the HD-DVD key flowing through Digg is merely, as stated on the Digg blog, a protection of intellectual property.
However, though the community is going at this issue a bit hard, one has to wonder why you give the impression of being so scared. Some users report having been banned and IP blocked for posting a comment about it. For lack of a better way to put it, that's just wrong. Furthermore, this number is everywhere. It's no longer a trade secret, it's practically public domain. As is proven again and again throughout the DRM war, fighting the community can't end well.
The chance of Digg, one of the many websites now "featuring" the HD-DVD process key, being hit hard legally is low at this point. And if it is, fighting as the face of the community, fighting the silliness of considering short strings of hex intellectual property, can gain Digg and Rev3 the tremendous support of the community.
For now, though, just let Digg be user driven, and the torrent'll die down. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Holy crap.. Digg right now.. It's like watching a city on fire.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Am I the only sane person left on Digg? HD-DVD sponsered DiggNation, so what!?!??
The guys at Digg got a cease and desist letter and to cover their own asses they ceased and desisted!!!
I think all of Dig needs to take a "chill pill" - Napoleon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15ZOMG! Sony sponsored them too. They must be in cahoots with Blu-ray too! Maybe HD-DVD and Blu-ray are actually under the same evil hand. It must be a huge conspiracy to crush our freedoms led by GoDaddy and those scantily clad women. Damn you kevin rose for your lies >:(
grow up.
Digg is a company, a companies goal is to make money. Digg and Rev3 can provide their service to the rest of us solely because of advertisement. - Tralfaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@mgkwho
And Wikipedia is the source of all truth and knowledge...which is editable by the public. - Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20WTF there is a million places now to get that damn code I am already sick of seeing it.
Grow the ***** up.
And ya they are sponsored by them and so maybe they try to do them a favor, And so what would you expect. ?
Its not like digg is the only place you can get that f)@#%*( code . - erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10It is the fact that digg is censoring the stories that users submitted solely to line their pockets. Digg is supposed to be for the people, by the people.
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Haven't you seen the trend on Diggnation?
They have spread so much FUD about Blu-ray ever since HD-DVD was their sponsor... they could've done it the civil way of stating the advantages of HD-DVD but they went down the Bush Administration approach of spreading lies. - generalbob, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13how is this Breaking?
and how is this any different than accepting MIcrosoft money and products (Zune)?
the fact is, running a high- audience show like diggnation costs money, so the guys have to accept it from whomever they can. As they've said, it doesnt mean that their opinions are biased.
TWiT used to run Dell ads. No big deal.
This is no different. - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -20/+24*****. Stories are being deleted like a wild fire. Keep them coming to extinguish the flames!
- takeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A number can't be copyrighted.
Besides reddit and /. apparently MPAA immune, since they didn't delete stories/comments. - abcdefghij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5FTFA:
"During the past 24 hours, Digg administrators have apparently deleted dozens of stories which included references to the HD DVD decryption code. These included one story which appeared poised to become the most popular ever seen on Digg, with almost 16000 votes within 20 hours. Administrators have also apparently begun deleting stories criticizing their actions, and also banned numerous members – according to angry statements posted by Digg users on the site and elsewhere."
If this is true, then the neutrality of this body can be questioned, no? - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Very sad day in Digg history indeed.
I hope they paid you well, Kevin. - jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4{warning: this comment will most likely get dugg down}
Digg users are being ignorant. Digg needed sponsors, HD-DVD sponsored them...BIG ***** DEAL.
There's two things digg could do. Either go on deleting the key, or take it all the way to court and probably fail in which case digg will probably get shut down.
Stop blaming Kevin or Jay. All they are doing is what's necessary to keep the site running. I'm not on the MPAA's side, I just don't see the point in blaming digg.
Most people don't even know what the key does and how to use it. This is just the mob's attempt to make a point. Point made... Now stop acting like children and get on with life. - aarongough, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Enough is Enough guys....
I think it about time we all show some loyalty to Digg and accepted that they have to deal with real-world issues.
While they cannot accept responsibility foor user created content they still have to remove it whe it breaks the law.
I thought the whole AACS key thing was great until EVERYONE started ragging on Digg....
Just leave it alone - rushad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sell outs
- victorc26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You're forgetting who you're talking about.
They can and will sue because of a number. They're the MPAA, they don't care. - rushad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sell outs
- galegovision, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13I think you people need to calm down and let it go. Shouldn't you be at your D&D match right now anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's a ***** company you idiots! A start up no less! It's not like they're selling stocks. Where the hell do you think they get money, the tooth fairy?? So ***** naive you all are. And with a sense of entitlement whose size is rivaled only by the size of your moobs no less. Get over yourselves. It's not that important.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about I put you on my ignore list instead you virgin jack ass? ***** geek. Get laid atleast once in your life, and you'll begin to see there are more important things in life than a hack key.
- Sware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone else notice that the submission page is missing? :P
- berserkiest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3VEVA le Revolution!! Or should I say Wii.
Seriously, digg is a business. Businesses have rules and guidelines they have to follow. Either you have a digg with rules or no digg at all. And as soon as you jump ship to another site they'll just come after that too. - scogoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Think of it this way HD-DVD is sponsoring the distribution of the crack!
At the end of the day, gotta make a buck. - defaultprophet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Yes, breaking indeed. What exactly about a sponsor plug from a podcast from several weeks if not months ago is breaking?
- griffe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I feel for Kevin right now... All the Digg users are being very selfish. He's on both sides of the fence here, you know hes for cracking some HD DVD's with this code but at the same time he has to do what keeps him out of court. Ofcourse he accepted money, they adverised, theres nothing wrong with that.
I dont know if I would have deleted stories and posts if I were in his position... If I would legally put my baby, my company into trouble, I would probably delete them as well. Give the guy a beark. - TradaPIB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+209 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
- ApplCmptrDood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If there was a donate button, I think people would gladly donate.
- BLACKEAGLE, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17i love digg and u guys suck this is not news u losers
- smurfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2alex albrecht for sure gets big fat paycheck from microsoft for hyping up the xbox 360 and hd-dvd and any other microsoft related device on diggnation.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well, the lawsuit would raise some interesting questions. Digg is a social bookmarking site that doesn't actually host any of the stories. It merely provides a forum for users to trade links to external sites. Furthermore, since the content is user-generated, the owners of Digg can't be held directly responsible for what links are posted. And finally, as the many parody stories have proven, it's a ***** hex number. The MPAA's demand that Digg shut down every story containing the HD-DVD key is no more ludicrous than Microsoft claiming a patent on the number 2, and sending cease-and-desist letters to Digg every time the number 2 appeared in a story or comment. We don't yet have a clear legal precedent for patented integers, so we need a high profile test case.
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys, jeez, talk about jumping to conclusions.
Just because it is the same people, but at different companies, doesnt mean that they will have skewed their moral compass. Also, accepting advertising money, is not the same as being paid off to screw over people. Also if I remember right, they had a bluray ad. If anything, burying of the HDDVD code, could be seen as a legal action to save their ass, since they could be forced to remove it due to DMCA take down requests. - erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apparently it sticks to cocaine and wet hookers.
- DAVIBE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Digg is Dead!
Sell it as quick as you can.(tomorrow ASAP) - Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Haven't people noticed that ever since HD D/D was the sponsor of Diggnation they started spreading FUD about Blu-ray!?!?!!? They could've taken the correct approach of specifying the advantages or HD-D/D but they decided to take the Bush Administration appoach of spreading lies about Blu-ray.
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The lesson is, don't show bias towards your sponsors. Thats where the whole "hidden agenda" thing comes in.
- iQuinn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Oh, its just for legal reasons... jeeze.
