- liketom, on 10/10/2007, -45/+378Well the Beeb are right on this one
- MadAce, on 10/10/2007, -26/+296Even when a BBC employee is bored at work, they insist on spreading the truth.
Impressive. - Varney, on 10/10/2007, -32/+215Too bad Wikipedia won't keep it that way, due to its "truthiness."
- djrisc, on 10/10/2007, -25/+194great, now the bbc will be defined as a terrorist group, detained, beaten, and after iran, well invade great britain.
- Fascist, on 10/10/2007, -26/+123That's perfectly fine with me.
- cojerk, on 10/10/2007, -7/+95While it's mildly amusing, it's certainly not "amazing".
- pictureDIGGER, on 10/10/2007, -7/+61BREAKING: Digg is not just for news.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -24/+76I don't know why you are getting dugg down. The first thing I thought was, "well....they're right".
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -22/+70Honest mistake.
- EricJ2190, on 10/10/2007, -21/+64It is just sad that Digg users seem to support this defacement. Even if it is about Bush, it is still vandalism, and it is still bad for Wikipedia.
- MJG2007, on 10/10/2007, -14/+51Well, it's not really truthiness. Truthiness is the quality of sounding true without being factual. In the case of Bush being a wanker...that's just plain factual.
- jokerthief, on 10/10/2007, -11/+39All sides of the spectrum are guilty of Wiki manipulation.
- fareed, on 10/10/2007, -10/+38You people talk about it as if it's an official announcement made by BBC.
- solarsavior, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32Flawless Victory
Wikiality - williamdyer, on 10/10/2007, -21/+47Hear hear! The truth is not defacement.
- Blitzenn, on 10/10/2007, -9/+31I am confused now. I thought Wanker was his middle name. ;)
- piper999, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25I hate to say it but a lot of people where I live (Colorado) actually think like this. I've lost track of the number of times I've been informed that the BBC is run by Muslim terrorists and communists.
- iEnigma, on 10/10/2007, -33/+52So when Fox News edits Wikipedia, it's immoral and disgusting, but when BBC does it, it's "amazing"? How about I get some non-biased news coverage from these ***** and they leave Wikipedia alone? This comes from a die hard liberal.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22We have released many evil inventions on the world including Pop Idol and *'s Got Talent. It is as of yet unknown if Doctor Who is enough to save the immortal soul of our nation.
- r2builder, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Tony Blair isn't Prime Minister any more. Keep up to date with world events.
- djrisc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21holy *****.
- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23The ingredients are all there regardless- the United Kingdom's openly admitted to having Nuclear Weapons, it's set up concentration camps in the past, it's turning into a surveillance society, thus it's not unreasonable to assume it's on the road to totalitarianism, and we spell everything with an "s".
What more reason do you need? - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21You see.. Wikipedia 'IS' accurate.
- shortstick, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23masturbation is not a crime
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20that was the submit button, not the spell check button.
there is a difference. - edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17I've heard people say this as well. I work with a lot of right wingers.
- theright, on 10/10/2007, -12/+26Ever heard of unruly employees? Just because the IP address is registered to the Beeb, doesn't mean the cunning plot was instigated by the Director General...
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -7/+21Can it be considered Vandalism even if it is true? Probably, but it doesn't stop it from being true none the less, or from being funny. Bush is a wanker, and everybody but a minority of Republicans knows it is the truth.
- sinbonders, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20I think you guys are missing something.
BBC is a broadcast/cable company, and can also potentially be an ISP.
from the IPWHOIS:
role: BBC Internet Services Operations
If I see an article with the headline "Breaking! Comcast calls Karl Rove a bastard," I will laugh, and then cry a little. - CronoTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I've seen him around and have watched him screw up our country, I'm pretty sure he's a wanker
- LostRiot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17I'm sure if fox news called president bush a wanker the title would read "amazing"
- xt0ph3r, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Why? It was spotted and fixed. Relax.
- SebHughes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Ha this is soo funny: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6947532.stm
It says Wikipedia 'shows CIA page edits'
They should make one saying Wikipedia 'shows BBC page edits' - Lackey10, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21I don't know. I don't like Dubya any more than most. But for someone from a national News Media Corp. to make a change like that seems kinda stupid and petty. I expect that from some of us Diggers, and it is funny, but, even with us, we are usually the one's complaining when corporations go in and edit like that. So, not just petty, but somewhat hypocritical too.
- nblsavage, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18Who says Wikipedia isn't accurate? :)
- atheinostic, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19The BBC employee wasn't removing or censoring criticism of the BBC, Fox News was. Neither form of "vandalism" is acceptable, but Fox's was much worse.
- CravenTwain, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Because the BBC is not just a news outlet - it's highly unlikely this was an edit from that department. And, also, this is one superficial, silly edit. The Fox News edits were extensive, manipulative and clearly political in motivation.
- hplasm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12The wankers!!
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19I think the difference is that the Fox edits were false, were as the BBC edit is true.
- 5lectro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Moronic = anti conservative?
- mattyG, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18This is digg. Double standards are abundant
- TWiThead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Perhaps the OP searched for the BBC here:
http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/ - mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Fox news did a lot more than just call someone a wanker.. Fox News made over a hundred edits.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15"Double standards are abundant"
Whining right-wingers and facile comparisons are too. - codelogic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I wonder how the OP actually came across that 2.5 year old edit? And then decide to do a reverse DNS on the IP.
- Wuss, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13I think neiltc13's point was that a "BBC IP address" really doesn't merit any sort of mention at all. It was most likely some guy/gal in a cube with a middle management job that just felt lilke posting on wiki. It's about as significant as me making this post.
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Well to be honest, Fox News' editing may have been a conflict of interest but this was just vandalism of wikipedia.
- joshf52, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15a select few exceptions are okay, this being one.
- scotticus, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15My IP address just called him a *****.
- Tarnum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8We call it "pics or it didn't happen", Wikipedia calls is "truthiness" and "original research is no-no".
It was easy to evade the censorship - the BBC guy just had to attribute the "wanker" comment to some important person and post a link to it. -
