- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"So they've improved the touchscreen..big deal. Apparently all this is good for is manipulating shapes and possibly clipart? Who cares?"
This could be used to sort through information, and considering your computer has ***** loads of it i'd say it's a big deal. - adamll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For people that aren't reading through the website, there isn't an actual product for sale. It is a prototype in both hardware and software that is still in development. They are looking to license the technology instead of selling a product themselves. Here's hoping that something comes along sooner rather than later.
Also, they do have drivers in development for both Mac and Windows. - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For instance, in the demo that shows him using multiple applications, if you watch it its clear that all it does in other applications is act as a mouse and do stuff a mouse can do easily. But when its used in the TactDraw application it can do tons of things like drag multiple objects at once and zome in and out by stretching or squeezing the screen. There is no indication that it offers anything like this for other applications, all it does is act as big shadow hands that do no more than a normal mouse.
- quietk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whoa that is awesome. here is another demo http://tactiva.com/tactapadintromoviesmall.html
- iTorrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I don't understand how this can offer precision control when my finger is more than a centimeter across. How can it distinguish whether I'm selecting one thing or another thing five pixels away?"
Because if you take away the shadows of the hands you will understand that really you are just using your fingers to move a mouse pointer. It works the same way (in some respects) to the trackpad on my laptop. It doesn't matter that your finger is wide, you're controlling a mouse pointer.. the shadows of the hands are just there for show in reality and for multi-cursor-aware programs so you don't get confused what cursor you are controlling.
Now as to if it works with other programs, it appears so
http://tactiva.com/tactapadintromoviesmall.html - daboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i have to force myself from drooling on my keyboard.
This is pure amazing.
and it would be the perfect platform for a tactile Katamari Damacy.
or maybe that's what the Revolution will be for... - Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw this a while ago. I want that interface so bad. I've had it with mice. And I love how that application lets you drag and rotate stuff using two or more fingers. That is so cool. Of course, when it comes out, apps would have to have drivers to allow multiple "cursors" being used at once. As it is now, OS's are meant for one mouse pointer. So of course they'd have to make a plug-in/driver for use in Photoshop and other apps where it's critical to have this kind of control.
This and the Optimus keyboard would be the ultimate user input devices.
Of course, I'd settle for either one of the Wacom Cintiq (The LCD screen with the tablet built in.) or an overlat for putting over my Apple 20" Cinema Display. Mice are so 20th century. - vranghel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come to think of this, it feels so much more natural to use your fingers to move/draw shapes than the mouse of keyboard.
- spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome idea, but it really needs application and OS support to be useful. Using this with regular old mouse applications would not be nearly as good (no rotating or zooming or pressing buttons with two hands, no fancy force feedback, buttons too small, etc). Apple should take this and run with it; it would really differentiate them from MS, and it would be great for artistic types.
- amprancid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent interface, makes perfect sense.
- korteenea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's no reason this should replace something like a Wacom tablet or touchscreen. In fact, I think the ultimate thing would be to combine them all together, perhaps even throwing in some advanced e-paper tech when we can. What we could end up with 50 years from now are computers so small they could be placed anywhere. Screens would consist of sheets of paper that interact with pens and our own hands in much the same way as TactaPad and Wacoms do. With something like *that,* the Optimus keyboard would look like child's play (and frankly, it already does.)
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Large demo movie:
http://tactiva.com/tactadrawmovielarge.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW, I bet they have a virtual keyboard interface ;)
I'd love to see this evolve into something more, like a key/mouse pad... ;)
Ownage.. - piisexactly3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from the webpage:
How much will it cost?
Since the TactaPad is not in production, it is difficult to quote an exact price. Price will vary depending on the final feature set and dimensions. A rough estimate would be a retail price of about $1000. - pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just hope that it would work with nonproprietary softwear - anyone have any ideas... the reason i say this is because they have there own written for the demo...
but maybe it could be adaptable to all programs, or different companies could license to use it. - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Never mind. Just read "The TactaPad communicates via USB and requires no special computer hardware except for a reasonably modern graphics card. The bundled driver allows it to be used as a replacement for the mouse with existing applications, as seen in our demo movies. Drivers for both Windows and OS X are in development."
- theanticrust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's was feckin awesome. Although it's going to be too damn expensive for the mass market. I think two mice and two pointers should be introduced.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow imagine that interface in an autocad setting! I could really benefit from that!! great digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HOLY CRAP THIS IS AWESOME!! i pooped myself :-
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Goosedotnu -
The Tactapad application does have this issue, yet this problem rarely occurs since Tactapad is far-less complicated than other CAD systems - SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It kept on getting cooler, and cooler and cooler.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be really cool for a variety of apps and professions, like audio mixing - imagine controlling virtual sliders on a mixing board, or arranging photos or video in a timeline. This is hella-dope.
- juicysauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, half of this interface is software-based. TactaDraw is an incredibly well thought-out application that is specially designed to tap all the features of the TactaPad.
I'd like to see how the TactaPad might be used for 3D applications. THAT could be interesting.
Or not. - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok people:
1) It works will all applications, see the other movie
2) It's for XP and OS X, read the FAQ
3) It's not in production yet, read the FAQ
Looks awesome, I want one! :) - Deicidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it blew my mind when he started rotating the canvas with his hands. It makes it seem so real, like a real object is in there, when you can touch it like that.
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*refrase that: CONSUMER product (The Prodotype is great however it probebly does not everything they would like it to do) :P
- Waylander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And I thought the I/O Brush I just saw the video of was the coolest thing ever... this TactaPad beats it hands down.
- ccann702, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is some straight up "Minority Report" *****!
- teitoku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" and teitoku, you're stupid. watch the video. and according to you, what photoshop is just for shapes and clipart? lol"
lol? And I'M stupid?
I bet you'd ACTUALLY laugh out loud after trying anything in photoshop beyond dragging big fat layers with that interface. Your big ol' fingers don't exactly have pixel precision. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mancat, did you see the prototype for the first Apples? Yeah, that's what I thought.
- leobreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old news but still a goodie
- qster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks good fun
- metamike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, that is the most awesome thing I've seen in a while!
- csopelario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its awaiting to be bought by someone according to the FAQ... Google investment? Apple investment? ;) Logitech, etc., Who wants to buy it? somebody please do so I could be tactapadding!
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03/4 Way through the video the guy grabs the canvas to zoom in and I fell out of my chair laughing.
Goatse?
It's nice to see the "joy of painting" guy still has jobs doing voice overs. - theavidgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0end of the mouse!
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"god people complaining about precision really are stupid. YOU STILL CONTROL A POINTER THAT CLICKS ON ONE PIXEL PEOPLE!"
The problem is the size of the fingers/hand projected on the screen. These need to be made *much* smaller. - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's frickin' cool but they need to make it for the PC so they'll sell more than 3 of them
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0joygasm!!
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SICK!!!
- proverb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone see the movie "the island?" this looks like a precursor to that kick ass table the boss man had. Do you people know what I'm talking about? freakin' Sweet
- squeeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0boooooo i don't like it, my arms broken and you need two hands :S
but still an awesome interface...dugg :D - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is AWESOME. Way too much money though.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it works _EFFECTIVELY_ in good programs like photoshop and general PC usage I could see a big use for this, but if its buggy with programs other than what its designed for which i'll bet it is, then I cant see much use for it other than dragging shapes around.
- Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0flippin kool but I still think Bob Ross is better
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait to get one, even if its osx only :p
- kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this would be awesome with the Apple Tablet that's supposedly in production! freakin' sweet!
- jimma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow just wow!
- nikosapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the best idea I've ever seen for manipulating objects on a computer screen!
I want one!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice idea, but nothing to get excited about. If you've been paying attention to Digg, holographic interactive displays are already in existance. Sure, this is nice, but it's not news, and it's way too much money. It's like someone charging $500 for a keyboard with a hibernate button. Nice idea, but nothing earth-shaking...and definitely not worth the money. There's better out there. Interesting, but nevertheless, no digg.
