Ughh..under the new Terms and agreement, YouTube credits them for this. Publishers can choose to show ads on the right hand side menu above the author name and description. It shows a 250x250 type ad box using Adsense. I noticed Sony Music and Universal BMG seem to have them on, and if anyone uploads a song that is recognized by YouTube's in-built checker as containing music from any of the YouTube affiliated labels - it automatically ads the ad box to it. YouTube gets to keep the videos on, and the record labels get paid for the use of their song(s). The artists get a meager share out of this so if Avril gets $2 million, you can bet RCA/Universal is getting a much larger check. - Peko, on 07/29/2008, -2/+13Ok, old man rant here. Why the hating on Avril? Maybe it's age but she's just another pop star who was in the right (demographic) place at the right time. Most pop stars are like this - there's a bit of a spectrum from manufactured pop idols to genuine artists. Maybe Avril falls a little more towards the manufactured end of the scale, but she isn't the first and she isn't the last. Also even genuine artists always get "played" by the market.
Also - I bet Avril works very hard for what money she gets. As the figurehead for the "Avril" brand she has to do endless junkets, ***** award shows, ***** appearances and performances Countless hours getting coached on what to say and how to say it. Days in ***** photoshoots for tigerTeenBeat magazine. And in case you didn't already know it - artists get a paltry fraction of gross sales. So if Avril sold 2 million records on her last album. That's multiple platinum - a very nice achievement. Depending on her contract, I wouldn't be surprised if she actually netted 500k. Taht's 500k for 2 years of 60h weeks and remember she's a top selling artist at the peak of her career.
