- joestump, on 05/26/2009, -24/+311As the guy who coded this feature, I can only be upset that I didn't have the pleasure of removing it personally.
- 4verageJo3, on 05/26/2009, -23/+152Everybody on Digg has a Digg account. Who knows what percentage of us have facebook/twitter/other accounts, and how can we now hope to share efficiently with our friends?
IMHO, this was nothing more than a marketing scheme to increase the number of facebook/twitter users, and as bad an idea as Digg has ever had. This does anything BUT make the site more user-friendly.
On a more positive note, you could try changes such as:
- make the "bury" setting an option, have the default "show all." This would effectively stop people from 'removing' the voices they disagree with from everybody else's discussion.
- make "newest first" the default, rather than "oldest first," which causes the discussion to be needlessly stuck on the first few comments entered, rather than the latest insights on the thread. - mikeinto, on 05/26/2009, -17/+110"Twitter is over capacity.
Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again."
Nice going Kevin Rose! Thanks for ***** up digg and twitter. - jaychuck, on 05/26/2009, -29/+120Finally!
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -14/+83Nice to see that digg completely ignored the story with about 1,100 diggs and 400 comments that were against this move.I digg and comment a lot of political and science and tech industry stories, did it ever occur to you guys that I might not want to annoy my real life friends and family with that stuff on facebook? I now have a friends list with over 160 like minded people and no way to contact them on the site itself.I have no interest in twitter, so that's not even a consideration. Dumb move digg, really dumb move.
Over 1100 Diggs and 425 Comments, mostly against making this move:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_Moving_to_Real_Time ... - SixChamber, on 05/26/2009, -12/+80Wow that's cool now we have Twitter and Facebook share buttons on a website that was meant to be a share site in the first place. Oh yeah, I forgot, they just removed the only share feature Digg had - shouts.
- ravage86, on 05/26/2009, -3/+57I also completely agree with you. A site that is about sharing content shouldn't require me to use another site to actually share the content.
Would this be a good idea if, instead of twitter, we had to sign up for reddit in order to use digg? - JoeParanoid, on 05/26/2009, -3/+54Screw you guys, I'm going home. Nothing's going to force me to use those inane hook-up sites.
- homercles337, on 05/26/2009, -2/+49Agreed. I have never twatted and my facebook account is about 2 years in the stale category.
- rhdesigns, on 05/26/2009, -8/+54I fully agree with your comment. I think it is ***** that there is now no way to share digg content from within digg but rather I have to have an account with another website to share things.
Terrible move Digg - Munceenuts, on 05/26/2009, -8/+51Digg makes shouts, people bitch.
Digg takes away shouts, people bitch. - AgeofMastery, on 05/26/2009, -4/+44And this will stop blind digging how? You think they won't just "tweet" to each other?
- Loonacy, on 05/26/2009, -2/+41But this makes it so much more convenient. With shouts, you had to go through the tedious process of clicking the "You have new shouts" link on the top of the page to see stories friends have recommended to you. Now you have the much easier way of going to a completely different site altogether to read about recommended stories in between all the other unrelated posts people have made. Then after that you go to another site to view the postings of friends who aren't on the other site to see what they have to say in between all their other posts. This is assuming you have accounts on those sites, if not then you're just missing out. Oh, and you also have to add your friends twice, once on Digg and once somewhere else. Isn't that just SO much better?
- jshhmr, on 05/26/2009, -5/+40I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account, nor do I plan to. The shouts gave me the opportunity to connect with people with the same interests. Bad move for Digg.
- solboldi, on 05/26/2009, -1/+35Why have a social networking site without direct internal communciation between users? Now I can't talk to my Digg friends. Why not keep shouts, but ration them? Give people one shout a day, and increase that number based on good behavior.
There are legitimate stories to be shouted. - ravage86, on 05/26/2009, -5/+38No, it doesn't. Why should I have to sign up for another site that I'm not interested in, in order to use this site. A site shouldn't require having an account at another site to be used properly.
- TalSiach, on 05/26/2009, -5/+36Good-bye digg shouts... see you on the other side...
- jkneeshaw, on 05/26/2009, -12/+39The replacement is worse; you should be upset about that.
- shadowspawn, on 05/26/2009, -3/+29Only twits use twitter.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -3/+29MySQL:
DROP TABLE `shouts` - SpectralSounds, on 05/26/2009, -12/+36Maybe now people will actually have to go to the 'upcoming' section and pick out the stories they like, instead of just blindlessly digging the ones that are shouted to them? That or they can rely on other people to go into 'upcoming' and do it for them. I'm glad it's gone.
- clvngodess, on 05/26/2009, -0/+22And Digg needed to understand that many on facebook don't appreciate us diggers digging and sharing tons of articles, like we do here. Twitter is similar and more difficult. Not listening to your audience is a flawed tactic in the greater marketing/branding consciousness of running a business.
- AgeofMastery, on 05/26/2009, -1/+23They'll just tweet to each other
- nepidae, on 05/26/2009, -0/+22Hey, if it shuts up twitter then maybe it has some redeeming value.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+23SO they're going to go to twitter or facebook, which digg has no control over.
- ciaran036, on 05/26/2009, -7/+27What?? So how on Earth do we get in touch with our Digg friends and fans?
This will make Digg worse because all the power users will end up shouting link to each other on Twitter... - papastout, on 05/26/2009, -7/+27***** you! 4 of my friends died while shouting out on digg
- neosinn, on 05/26/2009, -10/+29What an completely stupid move!!!
Does Digg not understand this shout system is JUST what made DIGG so user friendly? The ability to have friends and share stories with them?! I'm no power user and most of the stories I release are Christian based and most of my friends are christian types, So we could get stories out to the ones we knew care...
Now the solution is use twitter as your shout system?!? STUPID, digg basically just let twitter take over.
I think this will be the end of Digg once the small people ppl figure out it's pointless for them to even LOAD the digg website.
What should I do? Yup, nothing to do... Power users will just build big bases on twitter and still do the same thing while all the little guys goto other sites... such as i'm checking out now! lol
STUPID, i just can't believe how stupid of a move this is. You guys wondered why we used them so much... Did you really wonder? We loved it, we could share with our friends... Now we can't even talk to our friends unless we go and msg them one by one...
I like the idea of adding the new features but removing the shout system was DUMB, STUPID could even cause the death of digg in my view...
Why use the system if you can't share it with your own friends... Does the Digg founders not understand this is WHY DIGG grew so well?
I just can't quit ranting..... STUPID STUPID STUPID... Welp since i have nothing to do here now and can't share my stories guess i'll just go find somewhere else.... - Games4Life, on 05/26/2009, -16/+35Look at what we've done now. You guys have complained so much about the shout feature that it actually got removed. I hope your happy. All I ever saw on it was spam too but I used it for spreading news that I submitted to Digg, to the people I know on Digg. Maybe I don't want to send my submitted stories to my Facebook friends or Twitter followers? Maybe I don't want to add my friends on Digg on yet another social networking service.
If they had taken it out and put in another communication device, say private messages or an official Digg forum I wouldn't be so mad. But now that they've done this I can only add people as a friend without going off-site to communicate to them further.
I can see why people would hate it and why Digg would take it out but what I cannot see is why they would have no other feature to aid the community in speaking with each other out of stories. - JEWestbrookJR, on 05/26/2009, -16/+35Nice, but just too bad the damage has already been done. I don't think it will level the playing field as much as they're hoping at this stage of the game.
- ciaran036, on 05/26/2009, -0/+18You're absolutely right. For a start, Twitter is a lame concept. And then there's Facebook, which I use for interacting with my real-life friends and family. I'd rather keep my Digging activity and social life kept separate, I'd rather not be inundating my friends with ***** they won't find interesting - I'd rather inundate my Digg friends with things that they will actually find interesting, world news, politics - that sort of thing.
But this essentially means the end to my Digg social network - since there is no way I can import friends and fans from Digg to other social networking sites.
This is ridiculous and will give me more reason to dump Digg for Reddit, a trend that seems to be on the increase this year. - clvngodess, on 05/26/2009, -1/+19I agree. And it takes away from relevant discourse between more than just friends. I rather liked the shouts and strategy behind it. It was more townhall then. Sigh...
- Mizzike, on 05/26/2009, -7/+25Man, I love you Digg, but I have to agree with most everyone else here: this move just doesn't make much sense. So rather than complain, I'm going to just simply say that I'll live with this, but please re-think the shouts system and figure out a way to bring it back. Shouts, when used responsibly, are very valuable to digg. When used inappropriately--aka when BabyMan and msaleem and other top users spread their crap to their friends, who blind digg each others' stories, that's where the problem arises.
This is nothing new to you, I know, but there has to be a way that doesn't rely on third party sites like twitter and facebook. This has to be an internal feature of digg.
It's too bad that the jackass top submitters ruined this for everyone. Real shame.
Love you, Digg. - paintgrl, on 05/26/2009, -3/+21I will miss the shout option, I am not a user of Facebook or twitter normally. I now have twitter but it is not the same as just looking at my friends suggestions. sigh. I am thinking this was a bad move.
- cesclaveria, on 05/26/2009, -0/+17don't be so paranoi... oh wait
- sheeplescareme, on 05/26/2009, -1/+18i like shouts, though i didn't at first. i never have to go to upcoming because i only add people who shout me things that i would be interested in. i have a twitter account which i rarely use and it is going to be a pia to check for digg-related stuff in my stream in between the news sources and blogs that i already follow. i hate facebook, am rarely on it, and don't want digg cluttering it up. bad move - i'm going back to reddit. getting rid of shouts won't change who fp's all of their stuff - those people were already using twitter, im, and facebook to share all their crap.
- ravage86, on 05/26/2009, -1/+17Or, everyone who doesn't like this...
... doesn't agree with the terms of service or privacy policy of twitter or facebook
... doesn't like the extra effort of adding their digg friends onto 2 other sites
... doesn't know how to send something to all their digg friends because some only use facebook, and some only twitter
... doesn't want an account on another site in order to use this site
... doesn't like having to go back and forth between 3 websites to perform a single function
... doesn't want to send things to all of their twitter/facebook friends that don't use or want to use digg, only to their digg friends
... has common sense - 4verageJo3, on 05/26/2009, -2/+17We may not always see eye-to-eye, but this time, I have to agree with you, Nialgriff.
- geodebug, on 05/27/2009, -3/+17I've never used the feature and nobody's ever shouted at me.
-- teardrop - staticfire, on 05/26/2009, -0/+14I dunno...
I certainly wouldn't object if it allowed me to ***** pure gold.
I could use that in this recession. - punx, on 05/26/2009, -3/+17Take a look at the FP right now. 15 articles, at least 10 are submissions by power diggers:
MrBabyMan, louiebaur, scentaroom, naturalpapa, ThePowerDigger, BeShirtHappy, TalSiach, IvanB, davincih, smindsrt.
How is that working for all of you who bitched, thinking that if you removed the shouts, the power diggers couldn't get their stuff FP? LOL. - juankovo, on 05/26/2009, -0/+14Dugg for 'twatted'
- pfhayter, on 05/26/2009, -5/+18I left myself a shout once just to feel cool.
- clvngodess, on 05/26/2009, -1/+14or poke each other. (facebook jargon)
- damnshoes, on 05/26/2009, -7/+19they will bring shouts back
- Loonacy, on 05/26/2009, -3/+15Now only the people who are serious about collaborating on stories will be making front page. Casual users who don't want to go to the effort of setting up a Twitter/Facebook account and recruiting their friends to follow them on the other site have less of a chance now.
- UbIwerks, on 05/26/2009, -2/+14Yo Dawg, I heard you like sharing....
- ciaran036, on 05/26/2009, -9/+20Reddit's looking more and more appealing these days.
- danielttt, on 05/26/2009, -1/+12Now I got it....an epiphany about an idiocy from a dude called loonacy.

What is Digg?
