- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22You're right; hopefully they'll include "stupid videos" instead.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Isn't "pro blogger" a contradiction in terms? I mean, if they're professional, at that point they become journalists.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I tried the new Netscape site, and it needs work.
1) Too many ads. So many that it looks like crap with adblock turned on.
2) The whole IFramed destination page thing is annoying.
3) It's a Beta, and it breaks a lot.
4) It's a Beta, and the security sucks: http://digg.com/security/Netscape_Beta_Full_Of_Holes
I think Digg V3, is gonna kick their asses if they don't make some major changes. - garraeth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"1) Too many ads. So many that it looks like crap with adblock turned on."
Well, they gotta make up for all that lost dial-up revenue somehow...so, what? About $500 billion/year in ads? ;) - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Okay, I have heard Digg v3.0 will be introduced in a week from two sources now. But I heard somewhere that on the latest episode of diggnation Digg v3.0 will be introduced in three weeks? Can anyone who has watched the latest diggnation episode tell me what they said? And does anyone know with any sort of assurance if Digg v3.0 will be released in one week or three?
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Kewl. Is there a way to change the interface?
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Since the description says very little about the article...
Netscape is soon launching competition to digg. It follows the same general format, except that a team of 8 "pro" bloggers will be travelling around, adding stories to various sections of interest, in addition to the user-submitted stories. Just like digg, you can vote and comment, but there are no nested comments (yet). It seems like the only extra value will be that of the pro bloggers running around and adding stories, but I don't think that'll be enough to switch users. Who knows...
If you're interested in trying the beta: http://www.beta.netscape.com/ - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I've been really impressed with how well maintained digg is. As long as 3.0 keeps the same clean, refined look and feel of 2.0 I will be happy.
Oh, and keep the politics section seperate from the tech section unless it specifically applies to both! - uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://news.beta.netscape.com/story/2006/06/15/mp3-recording-trying-to-cancel-aol/
this was actually kinda cool, and the editorial made a difference...although advertisments in the middle of the top 20 and in the middle of the comments were particuarly obtrusive and limited functionality - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You're not kidding!!! That interface sucks, it's just covered with advertising.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Preach on, brother. Netscape will never hold the reigning status.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13If KevinRose said it, its law
http://news.beta.netscape.com/story/2006/06/15/kevin-rose-confirms-digg-version-3-launch-in-3-weeks/ - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8***For example, during the internal testing of the site, a restaurant review was popular, so a blogger called the chef to get a reaction to the review.
"The goal is to keep the conversation going," Calacanis said. "When someone has written the 1,000-word piece, we will write the 100-word update."
***
Don't they understand that an article on Digg only has about a 12 hour lifespan???
Sounds like the land of the necro-threads...
"Hmm... this puff-piece about a new movie needs an update."
"Why? It's old news..."
"Yeah, but the MPAA just gave us some payola to push it back onto the front page!" - jaymzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Top story on beta of Netscape.com : "AOL Copies Digg"
#2 : "MP3 Recording: Trying to cancel AOL"
I love it. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Read the Netscape admin's response
http://tech.beta.netscape.com/story/2006/06/15/aol-copies-digg/
Someonem posted a story about how Aol Copied Digg
Looks like the more "digg" their articles get, the longer it stays on front page - uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah but it's self serving - they pretend like aol employees aren't supposed to act like that, but obviously they are trained to. i mean, has anyone ever had a smooth disconnect from service? of course not.
the editors make it seem like this is an isolated incident rather than that status quo. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh wow. I had to go back and look to see what you were talking about when you said in the middle of the top 20. I had seen the ads, figured it was the end of the page and just stopped scrolling down.
Yeah I'd say that interferes with functionality. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You must be new here.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just what we need, more bloggers pretending to be journalists. If I want a follow-up of an interesting news story, I will simply Digg one that was written by a real journalist.
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"So now digg is going to start posting all Brad Pitt gossip and so on?"
I don't think that digg is expanding into that type of content. I think they're expanding more into the non-tech news that's allready posted. I don't think this expansion will actually change the content posted at all. Really, the only thing I think that's going to change with the expansion is the people who come into non-tech related article and bitch about them not being tech related.
"And don;t tell me Ohh no it is world news"
Well the article said "world affairs and business", so you can bet there will be some world new posted here. That being said some people (like me) don't watch TV, and rely on the internet for their news. Not to mention there's sometimes been news posted here that I probably would have never heard on TV. If you don't like how it turns out when it's released, feel free to leave. I won't try to stop anymore than I have in this post ;). - hansmast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nope. Blogging is about the format, not the professionalism or lack thereof. Darren is my witness: http://problogger.net/
- mistercharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'm glad to see another entry in the arena. it will keep others on their toes.
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I actually don't notice the ads (must be they use someone already in Adblock's list) but what I do notice is how Digg's style sheets look awesome in my browser, with the minimum font size set, and on Netscape's beta site there's text sticking out of the bottom of boxes everywhere, text wrapped where it shouldn't be, etc....
I do like what they're trying to do and I think the flickr-style tags are something digg would benefit from having (so all the people who are tired of Nintendo or Apple or Microsoft or Sony news could block those tags....) - aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Netscape site wouldn't be too bad if it just weren't so ugly. The pictures thing with the articles is good in theory but their execution fails to deliver & just looks messy. Advertising in the middle of the comments is ridiculous, especially with the pagination right there, too. Even I didn't get it and tried to switch pages, thinking it was weird to have pages with only like 3 comments.
Well, hopefully they'll work on it (I guess). So far, it appears that the only people using the site are Digg fans. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Digg will introduce a redesign that will allow it to cover a broader range of topics, including world affairs and business" does that mean digg will go the way of shoutwire and turn into a antibush/911 conspiracy website?
it best not :( - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4At netscape Advertisers take over would be a better title.
- cptspanky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4regardless, they still aren't journalists.
- cptspanky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4one can be a pro-blogger, but still be a quite amateur journalist. also, the namesake is everything: if they're not called a journalist, they don't have to assume the same degree of credibility, objectivity, etc. that journalists have to live up to.
- ShaolinTiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can real journalists not also be bloggers?
How do you define the line? Bruce Schneier is not a journalist, but he is an expert and also a blogger..
But just because he's a 'blogger' does that mean nothing he writes is credible any more? - RussellZiskey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's sad to see the various WINBlogs dragged into this.
There seems to be a lot of staff crossover.
-one by one each WIN site seems to be sneaking in netscape plugs.
(even slashfood found some lame reason to link to it -fer fuk's sake) - rBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote of the year.
I'm saving that for the rest of my life, and it'll be my goal to make that not true.
=)
I love digg, and I love with what they've done, and I hope we can keep pushing each other forward. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Netscape is like Zed from Pulp Fiction....
"Zed's dead baby...."
- Bruce Willis - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
regardless, they still aren't journalists.
What is a journalist?
Journalist
1 a : a person engaged in journalism; especially : a writer or editor for a news medium b : a writer who aims at a mass audience
2 : a person who keeps a journal
Journalism
1 a : the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media b : the public press c : an academic study concerned with the collection and editing of news or the management of a news medium
2 a : writing designed for publication in a newspaper or magazine b : writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation c : writing designed to appeal to current popular taste or public interest - KB3JUV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could see AOL doing a better job with this if they could integrate everything into one. They have way too many portals (aim.com, aol.com, now netscape.com)
Also note a lot of the Weblogs Inc stuff being put on there. Once again, another AOL property. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't care what they do...
It will always be cooler to "Digg" a story then to "vote" or "netscape" a story... - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because AOL is fricken' retarded and always will be.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Looks like the more "digg" their articles get, the longer it stays on front page
Isn't Digg doing something similar to this in v.3? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ironic that Netscape's site doesn't work well with Firefox.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually I read an article on /. not that long ago about how %80-some percent of their traffic was from unregistered users who never submit stories or post comments. If you read the sigs you will notice that there is really only about 24 or so people who actually comment on posts on a regular basis and are the ones who are getting modded up for the most part. (I browse at +2)
I'm assuming Digg is the same way. Most of their traffic is probably from unregistered users who don't digg stories or post comments. I recognize many of the digg users (especially when it comes to stories submitted as we, kinda like slashdot, only have about 24 people whose stories make the front page constantly) and I'm sure there are probably a few people who have noticed me since I spend way too much time at work posting comments.
Point is while 8 million page views may seem high when you count in unregistered users, users switching PCs (aka going from my work PC to my home PC), and non-unique page views (refresh refresh refresh refresh) it's not that hard to see 8 million non-unique hits in a day. - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18 million...
:O - stranflow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't like how they trap you on the site. It's misleading when they put, "Visit the Site" and when you click on it, they put you in a frameset page. On the left, it's a Netscape page; on the right, the site's page.
It's about page views and just wait, you'll see advertising on the left side soon. - IanBell330, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Netscape has really hit an all-time low here. What used to be a booming business has turned into a junk site that rips off Digg. Jason Calacanis who sold Webblogs In. (and Engadget) is spear-heading this project so it's no wonder its a poor idea.
- kerskine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"pro" blogger? Then I'm a "pro" pizza-eater. If you don't believe me, I'll show you my union card :)
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Digg has that, too; it's called Diggnation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5What Jay has simply dismissed as "editorializing" is actually one of the key benefits of what Netscape is doing. Take these stories for example...
http://news.beta.netscape.com/story/2006/06/15/mp3-recording-trying-to-cancel-aol/
[Crap. Other examples rolled off the front page, can't find now.]
But that one is good enough to demonstrate the point. They're adding original journalism to peer selecting stories. They're not just going all Malda on the story and telling what they think. They're doing original research and reporting to augment a user selected and promoted story. That's what I find better about what Netscape is doing.
Come on. Can't you admit? Netscape is actually adding value in a way that Digg isn't?
It can't be that tough to conceed that point.
EDIT: If Digg did this, it would make me extremely happy! - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1While at the top of his game Tiger Woods changed his golf swing and came back even better.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3aol sucks. too bad they got the netscape brand. netscape used to be cool, now it's just teh suxor like everything else time-warner.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Heh, the comments over there are pretty pathetic.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What's up with that? The title says something about Netscape, and the body says something about Digg.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Hopefully the range of topics will not include "stupid video's".
