- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm trying this one out and it looks pretty good so far. I recall there was a lot of buzz about the difference between Ask's maps and Google's maps, so I figure this is the next logical step for them. I do like the interface, it looks pretty slick.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3by having a worthless cnet posted?
- thefreshbeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks good, but I'm annoyed that Ask.com very likely paid for this Digg placement.
- stelriah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2someone should make a firefox plugin that filters out any stories or comments that include the words ps3 or wii. the debate is getting really old.
- aluminumpork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like where Ask.com is going, I think they're trying really hard to shake the AskJeeves feel and seem to be doing a good job of it. I would have really liked the city search, but unfortunately my city is very poorly covered. The movie search failed to locate the biggest theater in town and instead located one 20 minutes outside of the city. But can't blame them for that, it's a new product.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Didn't I just see a CNET article about rigging digg?
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't try askcity.com
There's nothing there.
Go to http://city.ask.com/city to skip the cnet article. - tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice try fanboy, but if you tried it, you'd know that AskCity beats the snot out of google local.
http://city.ask.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it would be a smart move to get its name out
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2*sigh* Yeah
I think what we all need to do is make sure we all have adblock installed, and keep digging the AdBlock/FF extension stories so none of these bloggers make any money. But usually the people who click adsense links and banners are the people who don't even know what adblock is. - sandls816, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like AskCity better: search for burgers in ny on both sites. On Google all you get on the first page are Burger Kings (do I really need to search web to find closest BK and do I really need reviews for BK, it has dollar menu - enough said ) AskCity gives you real local burger joints with useful info for each listing, menus, walking directions, search by neighborhood, what's next: can I order online and have it delivered to my apt. What can I say, I am lazy.
- pyr0x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2holy crap! I have been looking for a local search tool forever! God I've been waiting for this for years...
- sandls816, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually AskCity will also show a mexican restaurant on the current map.
When location textbox is empty it searches in the current map. - TBagwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't be so gullible, it's just barely more than a press release
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Next AdBlock reference gets user ignore for life. I am tired about this, I do not use AdBlock, and i do not wish to use AdBlock. If you use AdBlock SHUT THE ***** UP.
- stbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IAC, Google, and Yahoo are all trying to get this "maps based searching" done right. I'm kind of disappointed with this offering. Looks to me like their target is yahoo/google/msn maps - B-Diddy figures he has better local content than the competition (Citysearch, ticketmaster, expedia), so he can build it better.
He should be able to, but this isn't it. It looks like they just tried to be better AJAX-ninjas. Ooh, look, I can draw a random polygon on a map in one of 10 different colors. Big whoop - I can't draw square on the map and then have it tell me a good place to get dinner is inside of that region, and it doens't show me reviews and comments from citysearch.
The integration between the content properties and the application is disappointing. Yahoo maps doesn't let me draw a random polygon on the map and save it for later, but it will show me Mexican restaurants on my current map. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Not that I believe Google is the end all be all these days or even "Microsoft 2"
But this is one area where I think Google has it locked
What I would like to see is categorized local searches
For example I could do searches for "Mexican Restaurants" or "fast casual restaurants"
or "places that fix transmissions", "clubs", "bars"...
be able to produce a map of the 21+ club scene in baltimore........
tapas restaurants in washington dc
Google has already begun an initiative to get people to tag photos for better photo search the same needs to be done with google local
maybe if Google hired me they wouldn't have all these problems.... - Neem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Im so glad people are getting as tired as I am of this cnet spam.
Marked as lame, link to the service site not cnet. - thefreshbeats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Did you read the article? It's a blatant advertisement, not a news story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0should spamming a website like Digg, be a legal justification for DDos Attacking Sites in a court? cause im all for it
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0ummm google plus ask jeeves was a better name
