- wjreynolds, on 07/06/2008, -1/+21Increasingly I find that less techno-savvy folks are the least understanding/forgiving of even minor glitches in e-mail and internet. They are also the first to want to find someone to blame, and the last to understand that sometimes things just go wrong. Ironically, I work for a religious organization...!
- peaceninja, on 07/06/2008, -1/+19ok i guess i'll be the one to ask this question: what happens if downforeveryoneorjustme.com goes down?
- lisaawesome, on 07/06/2008, -0/+13They are the ones who freak out and start clicking everything and banging the table while screaming at me from across the house about how Myspace isn't working. Then they are mad because I cannot instantly fix their problem so it is now my fault that the internet isn't working. I love my family.
- jimmaculate, on 07/06/2008, -1/+13It definitely makes some good points. For a site like Yahoo to go down, there's a ton of money being lost during that period of time.
- digitaldan87, on 07/07/2008, -1/+9What if you couldn't get to google... or digg... for one day?
- jessechan, on 07/06/2008, -1/+8Is it any different than a desktop computing crash? http://fishtrain.com/2008/07/05/uptime-cloud-compu ...
- Rizoh, on 07/06/2008, -1/+8Oh great, this gives greedy ISPs more reason to consider placing a restriction on our Internet usage. At least, someone's doing something about it.
- redcolumbine, on 07/06/2008, -1/+8Use a server with good firewalls and malware protection that maintains offsite backups. Don't use an ISP that hosts spammers.
- smitas, on 07/06/2008, -4/+9Isn't there any solutions to prevent these crashes?
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6Digg effect?
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4If Google went down for a day I would think nuclear was has begun.
- AmyVernon, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3i was wondering the very same thing. imagine the panic that would ensue.
- wjreynolds, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1But if everyone has that philosophy, no one will call!

If something goes down it gets brought back up and you get an email - LiquidShield, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't just say "Americans" like we are the only one's that inhabit this floating rock. I would say just about everyone into today's world have very little patients. With rapid growth of technology to the point that we deliver things with in days, and not months or years like way back when. It's no real surprise that younger generations get more and more impatient, because they have grown up in a world were they expect something to be there when it's said to be there, or readily available when they want it to be. We are breeding our future generations to be that way. The restlessness and discontent is just a by product of the fact that we live in a repetitive world. Living in the same hum-drum life of get up go to work, stand at the water cooler, work, go to lunch, work, go home, work more, deal with our off spring, go to bed, and then get up and do it all over again. It's no wonder why people start to go crazy we are built from childhood to live in a repetitive world. Even I at 25 years old is getting tired of having to get up and go to work day after day in the same repetitive routine. There are only so many times that my self or some one else can do the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, before we just snap. It's really no surprise that people become hostile and aggressive when they are start to feel like a caged animal that can do nothing, but the repetitive tasks day in and day out. At that point you have to remember that even though we are highly evolved, and intelligent we are all still animals. What happens to an animal when you try to cadge it when it doesn't want to be cadge. It becomes aggressive, and hostile to the point that it finally snaps. The demands of for more, and faster is just our way of breaking the monotony of daily living so that things become little more tolerable. When the demand for more, and faster is not readily given when its demanded which is always the case with how little patients we as worldly society have in this day and age. It really is no wonder that people become disappointed in living, and eventually break into a midlife crisis. At that point people just want to find some other way of breaking out of the proverbial mind ***** that is our society that we demand to keep our selves entertained to the point that all the repetitiveness just melts away. Not to mention that our world to day is just flat out depressing. So we all have emotional scars, and pain in our lives. That's only in part that since we demand "More", and "Faster" that we show our selves images of how the way things should be. That is why people today immerse them selves into things such as the Internet, controlled substances, sex, love, money, etc... Self medicating our selves is SO much easier then having to deal with harsh reality of life, and our society. To frankly honest mankind will never be cured of our illusions and obsessions its human nature.
- ctrlfreak13, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1It did actually, read the last two paragraphs of the article:
"But perhaps they are not rare enough. One morning last month, Google App Engine, a service that lets people run interactive Web applications, was unavailable for several hours.
Among those affected was Mr. Payne, who had just shifted downforeveryoneorjustme.com over to Google’s servers. It was inaccessible as well." - inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Stupid Railpage....( I think its hosted on Windows 95 using a home PC made from toaster parts and an old Calculator. The hard drive consists of 5 floppies with 5 4 track tape heads mounted on a spring from a hand grenade)
- kraetos, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Hey, it HAS happened:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2008/03/13/down - Zounas, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Don't post it on Digg.
- KingGorilla, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I've got a tb of porn stored on my computer. That should last me a good 30 min. Then I'll play some Team Fortress the rest of the day
- chaoswings, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2As the Web has become an irreplaceable part of life, users have become less forgiving of even occasional outages (read: caused by digg).
Well at least that's what I thought he was driving at.....it seemed pretty obvious. Digg should at least put up a status symbol indicating that the site is still running smoothly near each story so people don't keep kicking the site while it's down. Or provide a redirection to duggmirror (don't know the legal implications of mirroring the site just throwing ideas out there). - ctrlfreak13, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Yes, because when your personal computer crashes it doesn't affect tens of thousands of people for hours at a time.
- aenegeling, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1yep, we're screwed.
- exabytes16, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2"Alex Payne created a way to tell if Web sites are working."
That's such a novel idea! Gee, does it really matter? One way or another the site is inaccessible. I do understand that they must carefully design the site so that they know for sure the site is in fact down and not just inaccessible to them also, but c'mon, this isn't necessary. - atbnet, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1The only thing you can do is have redundancy. Don't put all of your servers in one DC. The Planet's H1 DC had the power transformer blow up knocking out thousands of servers for days.
- AlwaysAwake, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Addicted to "More", and "Faster", anxiety-driven Americans have little, if any patience; Most of us, more or less constantly irritable, restless and discontent, when not "bored". This syndrome breeds conflict internally, and outwardly as we become hostile and aggressive in our demands for more and faster, condemned to be eternally disappointed with living, which fails to live up to our outrageous expectations. demands, and perceived "entitlements". Full of emotional pain called fear, loneliness, anxiety, or depression, we turn to self-medicating addictions like the Internet; alcohol; drugs; sex; "Love"; money; religion; philosophy, and a myriad of other things, to temporarily relieve our stress and tension; none of them lasting in effectiveness. An "answer" is being prepared now, by those who have manipulated this corruption, which will rudely, cruelly, and crudely "cure" us of our illusions and obsessions.

"If YouPorn goes down all life will cease to exist."
Now just think what happens if your productive Apps or programs are web based, and the site goes down.
You store your data on-line and the site does a slow burn or worse just goes away.
Why do people want to risk the loss of money or data by using this web base Apps / programs.
If the data and programs are kept in house, you have more control over them at less risk.
Yes you have to maintain your back ups but you don't have to pay an off site, web based program.
Then you think lone and hard about just renting your programs. - BlueH2O, on 12/09/2008, -0/+0That site either says something is up or it says "Huh? doesn't look like a site on the interwho." Totally useless.
- chaos7, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1i hate when my internet or power goes out
- Aurakle, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Crashes have been a big problem long before now, and not just for individual sites. There have even been movies made that predict what could happen if all computers everywhere went down. Our world has become so competely dependant upon the machines we make, that it would mean extreme destruction if they stopped working. But what can we really do about it? There doesn't seem to be any practical solution.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Sen. Ted Stevens was right. You people are clogging up the tubes!
- scamper22, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0blah. Let's recap my year at the office.
We've had 2 major power outages which have taken down the office for the whole day.
We've had several minor ones that have knocked our systems down for a few hours.
What's next, you want the compnay to have its own in house electricity generator? All for a couple lost hours?
Google seems to be always up. At worst, it goes down for a second and I just refresh the page and its there.
I can tell you for sure Google has better backup ideas than my company...
So what's better. Having hosted applications in a professionally secure web-enabled environment which might go down for few hours a year, or having to pay for the expense and expertise of mantaining your own internal infrastructure.
Here's a hint... any company would go the hosted solution. Give them some time to handle the trust issues... - l800LEMMINGS, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1remember the times where social networks were new and down more then they were up, i've learned to pick my battles
- Barackalypse, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Great, except I only ask that question about my physical internet connection. If its down for just me then I need to call to resolve it, if its a neighborhood wide outage, they probably already know so I won't waste my time calling.
- blanketfury, on 07/07/2008, -3/+2If YouPorn goes down all life will cease to exist.
It is imperative that this problem is fixed. - inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+0Than i'd go to yahoo and shoutwire :P
- legendxx, on 07/07/2008, -2/+1These already exist.. hidemyass.com etc etc etc. The 'internet engineer' is behind in the times
- CreativeGuy, on 07/07/2008, -2/+1The best thing bout internet porn is that there's no way ALL the sites could go down at once... so you're always covered ;-)
- grated4life, on 07/07/2008, -2/+1Now all he has to do is make sure twitter continues to be up and running..
- KaJuN4, on 07/07/2008, -3/+1***** thing sucks!!
- ginestony, on 07/07/2008, -3/+1cool little site tool. I'm sure it will become a little more popular soon
