- pacguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23As a guy from Texas, I apologize for the stupidity of some of our residents. For the most part we are a friendly bunch and don't do stuff like that. And then there are the exceptions, but like raven said, they have a special place in hell waiting for them so I don't complain to much about them.
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@HokieTT, there are a couple of reasons: the (female, not male) tourist may have been visiting relatives or friends in Texas and going to the movies may have been a social outing for them. There are often delays between movies opening in the US and movies opening in Australia. She may just like seeing movies.
Anyway, back on topic, it seems from the story the Texan woman will come off worse than the Aussie, as the police are charging her with disorderly conduct and using a profanity for her outburst in the cinema.
As Shepherd Book says, there is a SPECIAL HELL reserved for people who talk at the cinema. (Firefly episode, "Our Mrs Reynolds"). They should teach that to all those godfearing Texans. - jenmarsh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I live in Houston and I am not surprised to read this story. One time I was in a theatre in this city and this very large man's cell phone started ringing. He would NOT answer it. Out of pure anger, I as, kindly as I could, asked the man to answer his phone or shut it off. He told me, "You don't tell me what to do!" I was shaking with anger (or fear), but I continued to tell him that we (the lot of us in the theatre) did not want to hear it. He yelled some more, stormed out and I heard nothing of him after that.
I am SICK and TIRED of people being disrespectful in theatres. It doesn't only happen in Houston, it happens in every theatre I have ever been in. It never fails that someone's phone goes off, that they chat to their friends or they loudly comment on movie. It also goes along with the general attitude of people that whatever THEY want to do is what matters. However, when I am shelling out $8 to see a movie, I understand that everyone else shelled out that much and I respect their right to watch a movie peacefully as well.
I wish everyone would feel the same way when it comes to public venues that call for this kind of respect. - stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Texas ye say?
I’m sure if the victim had been just a little more patient, the other Texans in the theater would shortly have beaten the offensive woman into silence with their beer bottles, spitting tobacco juice on her limp and twisted body before getting back to the tragic romance on screen. - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18Not to self; Avoid the United Sates in future travels.
Reason; Guns, crime, full of loud and fat people, high risk of terrorist act occurring, hurricanes and crazy fat ladies. - bejitunksu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Why is this on Digg, let alone the front page?"
Cellphones are technology.... - patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This just proves more that there should be cell jammers inside theaters.
- RTCA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Typical. Law enforcement doesn't seem to have enough REAL crime to deal with. Personally, I would have bitch-slapped the lady and then walked out.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4sticky floors? dirty and uncomfortable seats? crappy picture? rediculously loud? annoying fat women on cell phones?
ill stick with my 52 inch sony and surround sound system - prthealien, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What a stupid fat ****ing bitch.
It should be legal to slap someone in the movies when the phone rings. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Evolution will take care of the obnoxious cell phone crowd. Just today one of them killed themselves by driving into the back of a log truck while yakking on the phone.
- Bradasaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you have this situation happen to you simply go to the concession and buy the coldest biggest drink you can. Make sure the lid is not on properly(loose). walk down the row behind her and *accidentally trip* poring the entire drink on the woman talk on her phone. Apologize profusely. If she want to call the cops on you walkaway *smiling*. The can not arrest you for an accident(tons of very happy witnesses). They can not stop you from walking away(citizens arrest without a specific charge is illegal). Best money you will spend all vacation!
- queraxus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Australia is like texas with different accents and dingos instead of armadillos."
You clearly haven't been to Australia then. - cosmo7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Terrible reporting:
- It wasn't a tap - she hit her over the head with a chair
- It wasn't in a cinema, it was at a wrestling match
- It wasn't a woman from Australia, it was Stone Cold Steve Austin
All of the rest of the story was fairly accurate. - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whenever this happens to me, I will go find a staff member and complain up a storm that I can't enjoy the movie because some moron is acting like they are in their living room, yacking on a cell phone.
The offending person is usually removed from the movie, and I usually recieve 2 or even 4 free passes for my wife and myself to re-see this movie, and then even see another one for free.
That being said, if you HAVE to leave your cell on for whatever reason while you are watching a movie (put it on vibrate), and it rings... Then answer it, say "Give me a moment" REMOVE THE PHONE FROM YOUR EAR, and walk out of the theater, stand in the hall continue your phone call, then return to the movie when your call is OVER. - Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"She said she had been told a conviction would not affect her chances of re-entering the US. Police said it was a "little matter" and they would not be notifying US immigration authorities about any conviction."
But they know now. Don't they? o.O - geeke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What a stupid fat ****ing bitch.
It should be legal to slap someone in the movies when the phone rings.
Remember that it takes 42 muscles in the human face to get make you're face change shape, but only 4 muscles to extend you're arm and slap the bastard! - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Of course, the best course of action would be to notify the theater manager. Get the bitch kicked out at no personal risk AND get a free movie ticket for next time.
- webdevil, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"Man, how in the world does this bring up a question about why someone shouldnt visit the US? I sure as hell wouldnt want to visit YOUR country.
Meh, theyre all just jealous cause we could pwn anyone if we wanted to. We just need to get rid of all these damn liberals."
@revolution117
That's the EXACT kind of thinking that makes this country stupid.......I lump you in with the fat lady - TheSpide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What I want to know is did the lady's cell phone have a camera in it? If so is the MPAA investigating?
Remember ... http://www.mpaa.org/piracy_theatrical_cam.asp "Legislation: In the US, thirty seven states and the District of Columbia have laws against the use of a recording device in a theater" ... - arzdb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3AndrewMayne: Semantically correct, but the point was that she was asking for silence.
I can't believe the woman could actually be fined for tapping someone on the shoulder. - webdevil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why must everything in the country be brought to a level of stupidity?
Also how in the hell does anyone think that it's proper to talk on a cell phone during a movie. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember about 4 years ago I was in a theater and something similar happened. Some dude behind the guy with the phone reached over, grabbed the phone, and threw it down to the concrete floor at the base of the screen, where it shattered. The audience actually applauded, it was the most glorious experience I've ever had at a theater.
Nowadays, I simply wait for the DVDs. - Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I feel sorry for the Aussie, and I hope the Texan get's what's coming to her.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hi, sorry, this is nothing compared to the gangsters who beat up and killed a doctor who asked them to quiet down in a Singapore cinema.
;( - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"lol, fat women are the downfall of our society."
and they can't get back up....
:D - av1d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Let me guess, she's related to the Bush family
- dstart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's a shame we don't have this Texas womans address..
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2":"As an Australian, I want to reassure all you Americans that this incident has done nothing to sour to relationship between our two countries.
Like the old saying goes, "You can't make a turd less shiny."
(just kidding, we love you crazy yanks.) - Flashman (1)
No we don't."
But we do enjoy hearing about things like this.
I'm also kind of surprised at how many people have said they would have done something more drastic than just a tap on the shoulder. Grow up people, this is the real world where there are ramifications for your actions, a woman is appearing in court over this ***** (although lets face it, if the judge doesn't through the case out on the spot, humanity REALLY is *****), you honestly think that shoving the cell phone down the woman's throat would do anything other than get YOU in serious legal troubles.
Just because you are essentially anonymous on the internet doesn't mean you become Chuck Norris.
Is there anyway I could have said this without mentioning Chuck Norris? Probably, but not likely. - spr0cket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a couple things folks seem to be missing here.
To begin with - Webster is not a small hick town out in the middle of Texas farmland. It is a part of the suburban sprawl that is Houston. And it is, for the most part, a commerce district (movie theaters, restaurants, shops, etc.). That explains the low population. And the attitude? Nothing to do with hicville.
It also might be worth actually reading the article:
"They were very apologetic," Ms Clayton said.
"They were very uncomfortable."
Ms Clayton said the officers had tried to dissuade the woman from making a complaint and had even told the woman that if she did make the complaint, police would charge the woman with disorderly conduct and using a profanity for her outburst in the cinema.
The woman refused to back down and not only was Ms Clayton charged, but the woman is now also due in court after being charged over her behavior.
It would appear that even the cops themselves weren't comfortable with the charges. It will be interesting to see how this comes out in court. I suspect the obnoxious idiot with the cellphone will end up with the worse end of it. - ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am so embarrassed. I live right down the road from there. The fat woman is obviously emotionally disturbed. I can't believe Webster police took this seriously. Why are they not looking for the person that stole my credit card that I reported instead.
- harshbarj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And this is why some places need cell phone jammers. And for those who will say what about an emergency guess what their are such things as land lines and a 911 call is free (as that would be quicker than asking for the jammer to be shut off).
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Theatre goers need supervision these days. Each audience needs someone equipped with night goggles to kick out anyone causing a disturbance and a zero tolerance policy on cell phones.
I can't go to many theatres because the patrons SUCK - copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Cell phones, kids and all talking that is not absolutely necessary should be banned in all theatres. If violated punishable by a severe ass kicking in the parking lot.
This is what the government should be doing instead of reading our emails. - mistermoose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wonder if she would have slapped the crap out of her if she knew that she was going to be charged anyway...?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Australia is like texas with different accents and dingos instead of armadillos.
- mrivorey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to be a movie theater manager. If I'd have had anything to with this, I'd have told the cell phone talker to leave the theater without a refund and given the Australian lady a refill on her popcorn!
- kolobcreek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That sucks. I was about to go of on this lady tonight about her phone ring in theater. Phreaking like Gilligan's Island or something stupid. It rand for like 30 seconds. What a retard. I don't see why it is so hard to shut off your phone. I shut off my phone my friend shut off his three phones. There should be serious laws about phones in theaters. Like ten days in the county jail if your phone ring after the opening credits.
- iworkforus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thats why i rarely go to movies :/
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The lady with the cell phone should be arrested for filing wrongful charges. All the tourist did was tap her arm and ask her to be quiet. So tapping someone's arm = assault?? FTW indeed.
- EAMUS1CATULI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thats a bunch if *****...the cops i mean. I would have just arrested the fat pig.
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ANYONE that talks on a cell phone during a movie at a movie theater deserves to be slapped silly. I hope the judge uses COMMON SENSE and lets this person off on all charges.
- vjgx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now THAT is what I call stupid. Convicting someone of assault just because they asked you to stop using your cell phone in a theater? Why the heck do you think they have the "PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES" thing blaring in your face at the beginning? FOR A REASON. If I got fined for something like that, I would just sue the loser back.
- Indisia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've resorted to carrying in a small water gun. Folks who talk get squirted from afar, then look around frantically to see where it's coming from. Most of the time, they get up and move or put their phone away so it doesn't get messed up. Either way, I WIN
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*Insert Comment About My State Here*
Yeah, sorry for that *****. .00000009% of the population is like that. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't blame the tourist. texans are LOUD. WELL HAUDY!!! MIGHTY FINE DAY!!! the whole state needs to learn the meaning of "indoor voice"
- Skysurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I am SICK and TIRED of people being disrespectful in theatres. It doesn't only happen in Houston, it happens in every theatre I have ever been in."
Rodger that. My wife and I gave up years ago for this exact reason. In the Seattle area, some mainstream movies are released in IMAX format. The higher ticket price tends to attract movie goers that have more of an appreciation for the overall theatre experience. If that lady had answered her phone in one of our IMAX facilities, I'm not sure she would have gotten the chance to call the police. :)
Granted, the number of movies released in IMAX pales in comparison to a standard release. - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forget about nationality, race, politics, etc. Most of these comments make me sad to be a human. You pathetic clods who think this is a regional problem are either clueless or more likely are the same ones who won't shut your damn phone off in the movie theaters. This is a reflection of where our society is headed. Children are not being talk to respect others. Cell phone etiquette is merely an extension of that rudeness.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea, seriously, this is retarded. like my prof says, whoever keeps their cell phones on during a lecture/movie is on a leash. If I were an engineer, I would build a cell phone jammer for fun but im not soo.
- xpack10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the chuck norris ***** is old and dead. its about as funny as all your base and should be publicly mocked.
