- lokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the article, it does not sound as though the school system in question knows exactly how to implement laptops into their curriculum properly. To me, it sounds as though the board of education sees something as "moving forward", and will spend more money to do so. Remember how incredibly useful those expensive computers were when you were in high school? I think the laptops may break more frequently, and may prove to be more useless.
For me, I prefer to have a text book if I am reading something. I like to have my reading material physically in my hands, and paper has never caused me discomfort during prolonged reading. - holymoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be nice to be able to do homework with books that have a find feature. Though, the problem that I see is if something breaks the students are the ones who loose out because there arean't any books to revert back to. Some people learn a lot more from a book than they do from a computer screen, so forcing someone to learn from a computer is not a great idea.
- Guti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now that's sweet.
I considered getting a laptop for myself at school but because the books aren't available for it I dropped the idea :/.
School books costs fortune each year, and it can get quite expensive for families with a number of kids (like my family).
I think it can reduce the ridiculous price of the current text book to something more "fitting" for education, after all. education is above all. isn't it?. - icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats tru, it seems unfair to limit it to laptops, the option to go the old fashioned way should be there, still I can't count how many times I was in school wishing I could just ctrl+f to find the answer haha
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's hear it for widespread RSI! w00t!
- funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The find feature would be nice, but I do not like reading lengthy writing (books) on a computer screen. I might like the idea better it was an e-book reader device that had a electronic paper-like screen. (I dugg a story like that earlier, but the new device costed $500!)
In sum, I think we will have kids who are more educated in games and hacking computers (They get to sit in front of them 7 hour a day) and less educated in other areas. I'm sure there will near-sightness on epidemic proportions, too. - icespide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow thats awesome
- scotty_go, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dont most school books at have a computer CD in the back (usually a PDF version of the book), i know mine do
and we actually use google to find ansers too.
getting a laptop for highschool could easily be cheaper than paying for 4/5/6 years of books.
im happy with both anyway (laptop and book) unless a laptop breaks :o. everyones fine - robmadole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The educational opportunity here is pretty great, you have to admit. Have you ever watched a video from a textbook? Imagine how much easier it will be to give chapter quizzes. The "books" could grade themselves and free up time for the teachers to yell at their students.
- teknurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This sounds great but without extensive teacher training and above normal parent support this will not work.
- Neo88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They only have 350 Students, so what is that like 1-3A? That is an interesting idea, but what of those who do not have internet access from their houses. Are they allowed to check the laptops out..?
I live in phoenix, i might want to transfer over there in tucson to check it out :D - andrew47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1way to go arizona!
for the rest you can try using free textbook exchange board at http://textbooks.studentsmetro.com/ - mitts2010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in Canada there is a school her that uses laptops for textbooks and all schoolwork.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate reading text longer than few pages on a computer. I find good old paper is easier on the eyes for lengthy reading.
- neilscool11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i go to selwyn house
and theyve been doing this for over 3 years
plus they gots a smart board in front of the class and the teachers have laptops, and we must buy our own laptops. we can put wateva we want on themlike games. we always play them when teachers are not looking like batelfeild 2 on lan.
(i am in grade seven)

I'd love for something like this to go nationwide so that someone could hack into it and change grades, that would make me perty happy - Standaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My high school is reaching to be like this Arizona school.
- cobra1122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm books are free for hihgschool studentds inless you l;ose tehm lol i go to this school ill be a senor there
- Ixliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will probably be more intranet than internet. I can just see some kid firing up google for an answer.
- dptechie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know someone going to this school and they get to take the laptops home and he said the only thing he doesn't like is that you have to turn in your work at the exact time if they say 6:00pm you can't turn it in at 6:01pm. Other wise when I read the article in the paper I desperatly wanted to transfer there. He also said that on the first few days of school they had tons of news people there good morning america etc.
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hack the whiteboard
- EN7r0py, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The entire state of maine has laptops for every child in 7th and 8th grade. weve already been doing this stuff for a few years
