- MikeEx, on 11/25/2008, -17/+111The majority of people that have issues with windows are the ones that 'Need' anti-virus, anti-malware, and anti-spyware programs.
Using Internet Explorer, clicking on every ad that says "Your computer has a virus" and opening every email attachment,
These are the people you want to switch over.
Don't ever expect them to 'want' to learn how to use Linux.
Lack of common sense is the only issue with any OS. - heilmikaal, on 11/26/2008, -26/+118Whenever i use Ubuntu i always end up switching back to Windows.
- tinko, on 11/26/2008, -9/+71Ubuntu will ERASE ALL YOUR DATAS! Be careful with this game..

.....
Let me know when there's a slick Office app (no, OpenOffice is not slick), a vast game library, excellent hardware support (especially wireless cards!), NetFlix instant streaming, and an easy way for me to work around the OS without having to use the command line. Chrome doesn't even exist in Linux. - PWoT, on 11/26/2008, -16/+64You can't understand why people use Windows?
Really?
Seriously, how disconnected do you have to be from reality to not get that? Hate MS all you want, but switching off of Windows means taking a huge chunk of what your computer does now, and flushing it down the toilet. I have programs, that I own, that I need to continue working, thank you.
Jeez these people are more irritating than Jehovah's Witnesses. - saadkamal, on 11/25/2008, -16/+56I am using 8.10 now! Ubuntu Rocks!
- wontstoptalking, on 11/26/2008, -10/+41I know this probably won't go down well in this post but...
I like Windows. I have Ubuntu running on my secondary PC because I like it too, and I need to understand it just in case it's ever crucial to anything I do. But I can't leave XP, not yet. I always thought that if (this is a stretch, but try using your imagination) XP was free for some reason, and open source, as well as Linux, there would still be many Linux users, but I would still use Windows, and so would a lot of people. I mean, just pretent.
I'm Wontstoptalking and I'm a PC.
Yeah, it's cheesy. but I rely on Windows and I know it well. I'm beginning to understand Linux the way hardcore Linux users do, and so I am therefor starting to love it. I think the next step for me is installing it as a second OS on my primary computer (a laptop) and dual booting. But I do not see myself using it as my primary OS just yet. - kayuri, on 11/25/2008, -14/+44Great! I am using Ubuntu from 6.04 and this is really comfortable and pretty OS ;-)
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -25/+54Ya I'm pretty sure. Thanks.
- CardHockman, on 11/26/2008, -9/+37Are you sure you don't want to just reformat and install and learn to use a completely new OS?
- aimhelix, on 11/26/2008, -17/+44Yes.
- saadkamal, on 11/25/2008, -12/+38Well I'm using Dual Boot - Ubuntu + XP.
- eplawless, on 11/26/2008, -13/+38No, I'm pretty sure I like playing games and using Adobe software and having my sound not cut out randomly and crash firefox, because PulseAudio is a pile of garbage. I do miss a *nix command line and aptitude, but that's a small price to pay for a stable OS with good software and support.
- Adv1s, on 11/26/2008, -32/+56I'm OK with Vista thanks.
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -1/+24Very insightful comment. Would read again.
- Zounas, on 11/25/2008, -15/+36Kubuntu here.
- Jeffler, on 11/26/2008, -9/+29Gave it a shot, not my thing. I understand why people would like it.
I'll stick to Vista. Say what you want, but I'm used to windows and I'm not a moron who clicks obvious malware ads, and other stupid *****. - razor150, on 11/26/2008, -11/+31I know I am going to be pegged as a Windows fanboy, though I am not, but the Linux circle jerk that goes on around Digg gets really tiring. Do we really need all these articles posted everyday about how great Linux is and why you should switch because of how crappy Windows is? I guess we do since people keep digging them up every day despite them all basically being the same article.
- FreddieD, on 11/26/2008, -1/+19Are you just putting together random words?
- cmsjustin, on 11/26/2008, -3/+21He said "from"
- houndeyex, on 11/26/2008, -0/+15"since"
- bpoteat, on 11/26/2008, -2/+17The only thing I 'need' is good audio production software. There is none on Ubuntu that comes close to offerings on Windows or Mac.
- Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -1/+15Should have said 'have been'
- izelpii, on 11/26/2008, -11/+25I don't like that people try to get people to use Linux / Ubuntu.
WHY ?
Linux is not an OS for boneheads and average joe's. I love Linux, and having used it almost a decade, both at work and at my personal computer for 100% the time, I love it, but I don't agree to try other people to use it. Let the suckers get viruses, pirate software, and receive the mojave experience.
http://www.christianloza.com/pages/osUsability.htm ... - Kragnerac, on 11/26/2008, -10/+24"Once again, I’m just not seeing it. Why would the average user (or even the above average user) bother with Windows when Ubuntu is so mature, so highly usable, and so free?"
When Ubuntu gets something that's on par or at least comparable with CS4, then I might completely transist. But for now, it'll remain on my second hard drive in a dual-boot setup on my PC. - wontstoptalking, on 11/26/2008, -2/+15You're doing it wrong.
- Lewie, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12DISCLAIMER: I'm not a MS hater. I like XP because it's familiar, fairly easy to use, and can run every program I've ever needed.
That said, I like Open Office, probably more MS Office. MS Word tends to do weird things with indents, centering, page breaks, and how they work together. I've never had those problems with OO, and I like the neat auto-complete feature (not sure if Word has it). But I'll admit the new menu system in 2007 is pretty slick once you get use to it. - mattlohkamp, on 11/26/2008, -3/+15so what you're saying is, rather then doing things the easy way, use another more convoluted way. that makes lots of sense. the 'use a 360 for netflix' part is my favorite.
- heilmikaal, on 11/26/2008, -5/+17damn forgot to capitalize my "i"
- Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -1/+13You're not doing it right.....wait
- popltree2, on 11/26/2008, -2/+13O NOES! NOT MAH DATAS!!
- Icetype, on 11/26/2008, -0/+11I had a hard time reading that.
- sigmaman2, on 11/26/2008, -3/+14"app-get's?"
I think I might have found the source of your frustration. - gkwillie, on 11/26/2008, -1/+12Because infighting is exactly what these kernels needs to get a wider distribution.
- newdigger, on 11/26/2008, -11/+22Me to. Its horribly underrated. On today's Quad-Core machines with 4GB of RAM of more, Vista x64 absolutely fly's.
- natenovs, on 11/26/2008, -1/+12i think you mean, Yes!
- wontstoptalking, on 11/26/2008, -1/+11You're doing it wrong.
There's a reply button. - throop77, on 11/26/2008, -1/+11What I think most people don't know is that when you install Ubuntu it will setup dual booting for it. I think the whole process takes about 3 clicks. Oh and you have to know your name and your timezone.
- ender7074, on 11/26/2008, -5/+15Yes it does. I'm very pleased with Vista.
- aussiebuddha, on 11/26/2008, -6/+16because it's not so mature as fanboys want you to believe it is? I was a unix sysadmin, and use windows because i hate having to do work configuring a system at home. i want something that works and ubuntu is not there yet, however. I'm still using it.
what problems you might ask?
on one of the most common laptops ever a thinkpad T60
1) intel Video driver is very slow and barely usable, with some command line tweaks it gets to barely acdeptable but still slower than windows.
2) wireless drivers not working for atheros cards (neither madwifi or ath5k work properly, and i have to use a pcmcia card)
3) pulse audio and alsa, being very convoluted, and you dont know which levels you need to adjust from where.
and the list goes on and on. - Rockkybox, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9asdfasfasd gives it thumbs up!
- mynameistux, on 11/26/2008, -1/+10you know, good for you. Its your choice.
- m0laria, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9clearly you should have said, Great! I would like to inform whomever it may concern that I have been using the wonderous operating system known only as Ubuntu since the release of its 6.04 incarnation.
- stattek, on 11/26/2008, -3/+12You mean the OS prevents the user from running multiple install processes at the same time, thus reducing the possibility of corrupting system file. Blatant design flaw, obviously.
- Phate8263, on 11/26/2008, -3/+12That's weird,
1) intel video driver is completely open and supported in linux (Mine works faster than in windows on my inspiron).
2) My atheros card works out-of-the-box on ubuntu since 7.10.
3) Ok pulseaudio is a bitch. - wontstoptalking, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8That's for me, too. I'm just not ready to completely detach myself from XP, and I don't see myself doing that in the near future. But I also enjoy using Linux. I'm sticking with Ubuntu for now, because I like it's user support and interface, but I'm also thinking I'll start experimenting with Fedora, and some others.
- Heiminator, on 11/26/2008, -2/+10i thought africa was a country?!
/s - braveryonions, on 11/26/2008, -1/+9I ACCIDENTALLY THE ENTIRE THING!!!!!!!11!!!
- repruhsent, on 11/26/2008, -1/+9Sane and mature comments, on my digg?
- noen, on 11/26/2008, -1/+9This is even more true with video production. In fact, if you want to do real work you have to use either Windows or OSX. It's just a fact. I'd switch to linux if I could but it isn't possible.
