*****! - inactive, on 04/07/2008, -0/+13Computers are a fad.
- latova, on 04/07/2008, -0/+13Seriously. Its like they're making digg progressively worse on purpose.
Also, while replying to your comment, same error. - hokie47, on 04/07/2008, -1/+12What? IBM used to make physical things? That is so 1964.
- winmywii, on 04/07/2008, -0/+11"It's worth noting that today's laptops are faster than the early 360s."
Oh, I was wondering that. Thank you. - Shadowgamers, on 04/07/2008, -0/+9Thanks IBM
- winmywii, on 04/07/2008, -1/+8why don't I just post that one more time. ***** you digg.
- texnofobix, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4Mainframes aren't exinct!
- Ramble, on 04/07/2008, -5/+9Why do you have a right to a job? If an immigrant can do the same one better, faster and cheaper than you then good for him, he deserves it.
Start competing you pussy. - tinkafoo, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4Now they have a z9, which looks like this:
http://flickr.com/photos/tinkafoo/2118764781/sizes ...
(Actually IBM *just* upgraded to a z10, but my shop doesn't have one yet.) - LordFate, on 04/07/2008, -3/+6WOW, the Xbox is huge!
- Exekutor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3This guy has stated a comment reflecting the current state of digg, I think I'll go ahead and digg it.......There was a problem completing your request. Please reload the page and try again
*****! - bonecones, on 04/07/2008, -2/+5April 9, 1964: IBM's System/360 gets the RROD
- MemoryDump, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4where do I insert my music cd?
- imitationflavor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3IBM 360 > XBOX 360
- doshindude, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3digging both of your comments, same error.
Posting this comment, same error. - chandrab, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2The sad part is that there isn't a single working IBM 360 today...and very few remain intact as they were scrapped for their gold content.
- redfan, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2It would appear to be more user-friendly than Vista as well.
Seriously, the old IBM mainframes are some brilliant machines. My dad worked on them for years, and so did a lot of folks from his generation. Great bit of nostalgia. - oldgal, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2Not the least bit sad - they would crash about every 12 hours, most had no disk, you had about 200K memory, didn't have enough precision for scientific stuff. Bechtel replaced a perfectly good ASCII machine with an IBM (EBCIDIC) machine - it ran about 10 times slower, so if you had convergence algorithms it was very difficult to tell if you didn't ave enough precision and were in a loop or if it was just taking that long to compute. The 360s were an improvement for business processing, however.
- MrDorkESQ, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2Ever Onward IBM!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9oh3gqOEKU - dlm85, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2I miss mainframe assembler. I still have my IBM system 370 yellow card.
- sangjmoon, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2The trouble was that IBM's dominance starting with the 360 led to its complacency and arrogance which almost eliminated IBM in the 1980s and 1990s. Say what you will about Lou Gerstner, but there probably wouldn't be an IBM today if he hadn't forced IBM to listen to what its customers wanted that was profitable. IBM would have been broken up into various pieces and eventually absorbed by other companies.
- deviouskoopa, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2Hey now... we're "ideating."
- ramallama, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2This was a 'real' computer because the front panel had blinking lights just like in the movies.
- johnnyrocket, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2"It's worth noting that today's laptops are faster than the early 360s."
What? Why "note" that? A Casio digital watch of today would be faster than a 360. That's an irrelevant comparison. - nydwarf, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Gee I hope things worked out for them...
- sadatoni, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1My shop is planning to go to the z10, but not quite yet.
- jbmcb, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Seconded. For handling high transaction loads nothing is better.
- sonnysavage, on 04/07/2008, -2/+340 odd years later and Microsoft releases its XBox 360 game "System"
- marcomx, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1hmm...haven't noticed
- oldgal, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Agreed. In the early days IBM would throw software out there, see what their customers did with it, and follow their lead. There support folks were the very best technicians, were available, and were very honest. In the 80's and 90's IBM decided they knew best and were telling customers how they must use their machines/software and their support staff had become standard sleaze salesy.
- snoop101, on 04/07/2008, -2/+3"It's worth noting that today's laptops are faster than the early 360s."
Todays laptops are faster then pc's 1-2 years ago. I dont get there point. - oldgal, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1But the people who know how to deal with them are rapidly retiring and being forced out!!
- ausfahrt, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Burying your comment as lame is one of them is one of them.
- Smegzor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Ah the good old days. Before they invented the red ring of death.
- jamiecrager, on 06/10/2009, -0/+0IBM is not the future, but the past. they need to rethink and rebrand and innovate.

http://www.twitter.com/CragerInc - doctechnical, on 04/07/2008, -1/+1There was some line-printer pr0n, but uh... no.
- tugger, on 04/07/2008, -3/+3Lets face it, there's one area where IBM and microsoft have something in common.
They both are better at innovating hardware than software. - lornali, on 04/07/2008, -1/+1Interesting article.
- inactive, on 04/07/2008, -2/+2*witty comment about current computing practices that were not possible on computers 40 years ago*
- warragul, on 04/07/2008, -0/+0The biggest s/360 had 256K of ferrite core memory. It wasn't until the s/370 that CPUs with a meg of memory became available.
Very few s/360s were sold. The vast majority were leased to customers by IBM. This made upgrading very simple. Just swap out the machine. - lornali, on 04/07/2008, -1/+1yeah the digg is interesting and worth a look ........looking foward to more diggs on the same lines.
- gtwilliams, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0You mean the yellow green card don't you.

- ausfahrt, on 04/07/2008, -2/+1It mustn't have.
- ucccft, on 04/07/2008, -7/+5IBM: From the Greatest company to the worst company.
Shameful how IBM has become the King of laying off and replacing all it's American work force. Please call your Congressman/woman or Senator and demand they ABOLISH All H1/L1/TN Visas which are being used to replace All American Workers with cheap labor (Job thief scums) from all over the world. - winmywii, on 04/07/2008, -6/+3"It's worth noting that today's laptops are faster than the early 360s."
Thanks for clearing that up. -
