Actually it's not about the issue that you can't use more than 4 gift cards online, it's that on their gift card FAQ it plainly states that you can use an unlimited amount of gift cards when you call to order over the phone and then not only did they refuse the gift cards after hours of uninformed sales people stumbling around trying to figure out what's going on AND one person saying "Yeah, you should just use the 4 gift cards, then pay the rest and debit, and I'll gladly use the other 4 to buy apple care and a printer for you," but they expect us to drive a long distance to use money they already have after their FAQ plainly states that there is no limit on phone orders.
I've always had an issue with gift cards, and when corporations want to be stupid about gift cards, it deserves attention. They already have the money and basically are refusing to make good on a purchase with money they already have. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -47/+290If Dell or HP did this you'd all be outraged.
- actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -154/+328Yes, someone notify The Consumerist and the BBB about how unfair it is that you can't drop-in eight gift cards. I think it's a bit inconvenient, sure, but I don't see how any sort of over-blown activism is necessary.
Just because you'd have to drive a bit to the store to cash these in (what, no phone ordering?), does not mean that Apple is in any way saying they want your friend to burn waste her money.
ReverendRoger: "I hope we can get something done."
What might that be? Should Apple air-lift you and your friends to their store just so you don't spend a few bucks on gas? Or should they allow for unlimited gift card entries on an online order? I'm all for keeping corporations in check, but I think you guys are being a bit too whiny, falsely victimizing yourselves in the process. - ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+113@canti32
First she tried to order online, saw the limitation, and then checked the gift card FAQ and say that it said there's no limit on phone orders. Then she tried to order over the phone and got the run-around. And the reason she got so many gift cards is because she asked her family to buy her Apple gift cards for Christmas. - jeremy66158, on 10/12/2007, -26/+132I didn't read all the comments but what about buying 2 gift cards with your 8 gift cards?
- ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -106/+181This is my friend and I actually suggested that she submit this story to the Consumerist. Wish I could have submitted the story to Digg instead of mattman, but that's how things go. :) Pretty messed up on Apple's part to say there's no limit in one place and then say when you actually go to make the purchase that there is a limit.
By the way, the nearest Apple store is in Atlanta. It'd take 3 hours one way (6 hours total) and a tank of gas (about $30) to get there. So Apple wants her to spend $30 to be able to claim money that they already have.
I hope we can get something done. Thanks to everyone that digs this story up. - ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58Sorry for the double post, got distracted and couldn't edit my post in time (that thing I do when I'm not on Digg... I think they call it work).
@actionscripted
Also you need to RTFA. Since it's a refurbished Apple we'd just be driving to Atlanta to merge the gift cards, if they will do it. So we'd spend a total of 4-6 hours driving, a tank of gas, fighting traffic, and just generally be inconvenienced for something they say they'll do in one place and then won't do when it comes down to it. Just crappy service on their part.
Yeah, it is a bit whiney, but she's been working 2 jobs to come up with the rest of the money to buy this, so I think she deserves a bit of an outlet when Apple basically lied to her and gave her overall crappy service.
And as far as doing something I was hoping the attention would put pressure on Apple to address the issue in some way. - CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49@jeremy66158
I thought the exact same thing and decided to head over to the online Apple Store. I put just a $100 gift card in the basket and headed to checkout, the gift card payment option was grayed out. So, it seems that there is no way to purchase a larger gift card with smaller ones at the online store. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47"or as is posted at the top of the story just call the 800 number and order it"
She really should have done that!
Oh wait, according to the story she DID. - TheInfamousOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Pls read the article, or at least the 5 other comments where people tell you the article said she did call in.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46@GRTWHT: This won't get to the front page unless people digg it? *****, so THAT'S how this place works.
- dougsnell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43Couldn't they take down the numbers from the 8 cards, validated them, issued one new card, and void the original 8?
- ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36@ariastar
Actually she called two or three times and spoke with supervisors. It appears that Apple's phone sales team is using more or less the same interface that's on the web.
@Terc
She placed more than one phone call the the nearest Apple store is a 4-6 hour round trip.
@br0ck
We tried the phone support as described in the gift card FAQ. That's what this article is all about. - Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42@joelhardi
Which part of TFA didn't you get? How about the fact that Apple states in their over the phone FAQ that there is no limit on the number of cards used over the phone. How about the fact that this was done over the phone. Maybe just maybe you could read first before commenting. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41Seriously, like, you can't do that.
Like, on the back of the gift card it TOTALLY says:
"Apple Gift Cards are not redeemable for cash and cannot be used to purchase additional Apple Gift Cards..."
Like, OMG! And, like, many other gift cards say almost the EXACT SAME THING.
Totally, what WAS that girl thinking. - bias, on 10/12/2007, -44/+72Jeez, Apple fanboys are a bunch of cry babies.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32I've had similar issue with trying to give Apple my money.. I actually got fed up at one point and repeated that same statement about how incredibly difficult it is to give Apple my money.
In my case I was in charge of making the purchase for our company. We ordered it online with the company credit card, obviously under an Executive's name. We faxed in a letter from said executive on company letterhead as directed by the Apple business support person in that particular store I was going to pick up the products from.
Well I make the 2 hour drive and got there 30 minutes before they were closing, and they claimed they couldn't release the products to me because it was company policy to not give products to someone who's name is not on the card, even though I had the card in hand, my ID and a letter notifying them that I am allowed to pick up the products.
I ended up picking up the items the next day when the original person I talked to was in the store, though they said this was a one time thing and they normally don't allow it. They claim the CEO of the company has to be present to pick up the products, because you know, CEOs have nothing better to do than drive hours to an Apple store to pick up some things.
Lesson learned, stay away from Apple when making business purchases. - ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27@vulcanius
ZOMGWTFBBQ RTFA. That's the issue here, they won't do it over the phone either. - kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29No, that is too easy, and it just plain makes too much sense. Don't you know the whole point behind gift cards is to limit the customers ability to spend their own money, even at the store the gift cards are for.
- ophilye, on 10/12/2007, -32/+56This is definitely one of those stories where Apple REALLY needs to cater to their users. C'mon people, digg the story up, let Apple see what what they are doing is wrong. If they want Gift Cards to continue to sell, they need to be able to make it as easy as possible to use them.
Just In Case, I am DEFINITELY not buying any apple gift cards in the future... and Apple should know how many people they are scaring off from buying them.
And one more thing.. To all the people commenting "you didn't read the card terms, it's your own fault" or "Try calling instead of using the website"... ARRR TEEE EFF AAYY!!!!!! - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27That's not the point. She had gift cards. Apple had money. She should be able to spend it however she damn well pleased because THEY HAVE THE MONEY. I can't believe you people are defending Apple. As someone said above, if this were any other PC company, you all would be up in ***** arms.
- ipugh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31RTFA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Ohhhh... some negative spinning about your loved company and the article deserves to be buried as lame, huh apple humper?
I'll bury YOU as lame. No, better than that: please meet my block button! - ReverendRodger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23http://www.apple.com/go/giftcards/faqs.html
I'm still seeing "Can I use multiple gift cards when making a purchase?
Yes. You can use up to six cards when making a purchase at a retail Apple Store and up to four cards at the online Apple Store . There is no limit to the numbers of cards you can use when making a purchase through 1-800-MY-APPLE." - canti32, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34Then apple should have to comply with their policy. Did they tell you point blank they wouldn't accept more than four cards, or did they tell you they couldn't accept them at the time, and for what reason?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24How about READING THE ARTICLE?
Jeezus. - bethaners, on 02/27/2009, -6/+25It seems like Apple definitely changed the FAQ within the last several hours. I just went to the giftcard site and I'm still seeing it as showing that phone orders can use unlimited gift cards (I even saved that version if Charlie wants it to fax to the call center to proove her side of this), but some people are now getting the updated site where it says you can only use 4 cards or whatever. It drives me insane how companies will change their policies like that online and try to leave no proof that the policy was ever stated as something different.
She should just continually call the apple number and harrass them until a manager buckles and sells her the computer. Call center managers will do just about anything if you bug them enough. - samus007, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23I used 6 gift cards and a CC to get a referbed mac last year. I called the # on the website, ordered the computer, gave the guy on the phone all the numbers on the cards, bam, done. Simple. Maybe call back, get a nicer sales rep this time?
/shrug - jhnewt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Wow, after reading through these comments I have learned that a majority of people like to comment without RTFA.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19"these articles where people hate on a brand because the people in the call centers suck are silly. Um lets think about who works in call centers.... people who don't have the skills to do more"
Tell me again why it's unreasonable to blame a company if they don't get people with the skills to do the job they were hired to do? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I had 7 gift cards that I bought with prepaid credit cards (bought them at Giant Eagle to get FuelPerks money :). Went to buy a MacBook online, where they only take 3. Contacted Apple, a nice guy named Mike consolidated 3 of them together and I bought a MacBook with 5 gift cards. Plus they were really polite about it on the phone. Maybe just a case of one bad tech?
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18she hung up and called again, RTFA
- ericbs1975, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21@ubderdork
Read the story... - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Telling her she can use four gift cards for the computer, debit the rest, then use the other four for a warranty is not a promotion. That's not letting her use her gift cards to buy the damn computer.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Holy crap, did any of you read the article? There are so many comments in here that speculate on things that are answered in the article. Not to mention, statements that are being dugg up which are inaccurate as relating to the article.
- CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15She asked for the gift cards!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21somewithces...I guess what is wrong with "us Americans" is that we can READ THE ***** ARTICLE, unlike dumb ***** like you. Therefore we know that she TRIED to call the phone number to place the order and was not alowed to.
Now...will you come back and apologize for how stupid your comment was, given the information that was freely available in the article? OR will you continue to be a little pussy and hope that no one calls you on it?
(Hint: if you want to salvage ANY credibility, you should apologize and admit you were stupid.) - PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Because its against policy for any company that sells gift cards to let you use a gift card to purchase gift cards. If you'd read the comments prior you'd see someone actually tried to do it over the internet and it won't let you. If you want to consolidate you'd probably have to go into an actual apple store, which defeats the whole purpose of trying to order over the web or the phone.
Your being buried because you don't know wtf your talking about and a general idiot. - Fritzel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Charlie is a name used for both sexes
- fuzzmello, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19***** all you fanboys. you make me sick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Bingo! At least Micheal Dell won't try to rape you like Jobs does.
- jaknet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Well this just goes to show the Apple fanyboys are out in force on Digg (again). Had this been microsoft then 90% of the comments would have been about how evil they are, but because it's Apple about 70% of the comments have not even RTFA and just instantly start slagging the girl off and saying it's all her fault.
Bunch of ***** sheep.
@ ReverendRodger
All the best for getting it sorted - boybunny, on 10/12/2007, -17/+30bias
Not all Apple fanboys are so pathetic that we have to defend Apple on this. As long as there are new Macs Apple could curl up and die for all I care. Apple have a customer support system that makes M$ look like winning lotto. Well that's my experience. It is also the experience of the few family members I have who switched to Mac.
Macs are great machines, pity Apple comes bundled with them. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11That's in direct contradiction to the information still posted here: http://www.apple.com/go/giftcards/faqs.html
"There is no limit to the numbers of cards you can use when making a purchase through 1-800-MY-APPLE." - plexxer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"with the electronic equivalent of food-stamps." Heh. That's actually not a bad analogy of gift cards. Except food stamps, like regular stamps, never expire.
There are really no exact parallels to gift cards that I can think of. They are wasteful all around - they usually end up either unused or with a small balance that "expires" after a set amount of time or is eaten away by service charges, and then eventually gets tossed into a landfill. They reign supreme at the nexus where lazy consumers meet greedy corporations. I am pretty sure 2 full circles of hell are completely paved with unused gift cards. - polartb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Interesting...Apple's site has contradictory information on it:
http://www.apple.com/go/giftcards/faqs.html
Can I use multiple gift cards when making a purchase?
Yes. You can use up to six cards when making a purchase at a retail Apple Store and up to four cards at the online Apple Store . There is no limit to the numbers of cards you can use when making a purchase through 1-800-MY-APPLE.
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/giftcards_faq.html
Can I use multiple gift cards when making a purchase?
Yes. You can use up to six cards when making a purchase at a retail Apple Store and up to four cards at the online Apple Store or when making a purchase through 1-800-MY-APPLE. - serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12ReverendRoger, have her call and again and if she gets the same answer, ask to speak to a supervisor and explain the situation. Apple is like any company out there, and has ill-informed people at the call center/sales entry level positions. Don't call the Retail Apple Store in Atlanta unless you intend on showing up there. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE. I've called them before and ordered refurbs from them that were ordered online.
And if you don't get any satisfaction, fire off a email to SJ, Phil Schiller or some other high level executive. Make sure you let them know the story is on the front page of Digg. It should get them movin'.
good luck! - easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14call the 800 number I had the same problem and they hooked me up.
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@romwil
Yep they actually changed it and then put it back to the original. Weird huh? why would they do that? - Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9please read TFA, she did Call 1-800-MY-APPLE.
