- geoken, on 04/16/2008, -19/+197I wan't to see the PC's tested without the crapware (ie Norton, some spyware cleaner, etc.). I just cleaned a brand new Sony Vaio laptop for my friend. In it's default state it took longer than 2 minutes to boot Vista, after a clean install using a retail version of Vista the laptop booted in ~30 sec. It also had a mere 42 running applications vs. the 77 running applications that the pre-installed Vista image was running. Norton alone will add like 30 or 40 seconds to the boot time.
- dechah, on 04/16/2008, -11/+173Wow, who would have thought that a computer running a higher specced CPU would out benchmark a computer with a lower specced CPU, buried for being a pointless comparison
- Topher06, on 04/16/2008, -10/+160Wow, yeah, Asus and Gatewary are both top LEADERS in the PC industry, good matchup.
- HotGore, on 04/16/2008, -11/+136The systems are not even the same speed. This is just BS.
- hawk0168, on 04/16/2008, -3/+89What exactly are they comparing? OSX to Vista? Different desktop/laptop specs? Manufacturers? Way too many variables to determine ANYTHING from this. Poor performance - and from Popular Mechanics. Why don't they compare two different car makers with different style cars and completely different engine sizes? Stick to what you know.
- digitaldivinci, on 04/16/2008, -4/+82I love that the significantly smaller screen'd laptop had better battery life..
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -4/+79Gateway is still in business? really?
- visionviper, on 04/16/2008, -1/+63I'm sorry, but where is the abuse? I was looking forward to torture testing. Things like dropping the computers, running them at very hot temperatures, etc.
What is with mistitled stuff on digg today? - MrWhite2020, on 04/16/2008, -2/+55Their specs are all over the place. 1GB of RAM in one box, 3GB in another, the only thing they kept constant was the video card. For an article that said almost all the components are the same, they did a terrible job of getting those components together, and testing as close as possible. Really, it is a test between Leopard and Vista. With this generation of Mac, why didn't they just test them both on the Mac's? Then we could see the time differences on EXACTLY the same hardware.
- Largent, on 04/16/2008, -8/+57yeah, they don't even use equivalent ***** machines, so stupid.
- herrshuster, on 04/16/2008, -12/+59This is stupid. Bloatware on a great pc vs mac. I could build a computer for 500 bucks that could kick the imac's ass
- freonchill, on 04/16/2008, -2/+42compare a PC - 2.0ghz 667fsb w/ 2mb cache cpu to a MAC 2.2 800fsb w/ 6mb cache
lets see who wins?!
it doesnt take a rocket scientist - NathanCH, on 04/16/2008, -5/+44Yeah, though you can't buy a computer from a company without crap ware. That's a huge downside for Windows users. Of course you can build your own but only if you're a techie. I doubt my mom is going to go to newegg and order a bunch of parts :P
- kmotiv1, on 04/16/2008, -3/+41There is no way that iMac launches word in 4.2 seconds. My Mac Pro 8 core takes at least 20 seconds to get word fully up and running.
- jasmus, on 04/16/2008, -7/+44While I do admire the effort they put into making a fair comparison, with all details available, these comparisons will never satisfy everyone.
- Drealoth, on 04/16/2008, -4/+40The iMac's processor is 2.4GHz, the Gateway (they're still in business?) is 2.0GHz. I don't really understand what this is measuring. Performance of similar looking computers? The least they could have done is upped the processor on the Gateway and added RAM on the Mac (1GB vs. 3GB). Given how much Apple charges for RAM, this might even out the prices too.
(And come on, install XP on the thing. Vista bashing is just too easy). - inertiadriftsc, on 04/16/2008, -9/+43When are they going to realize PC stands for PERSONAL COMPUTER, by definition an Apple is a PC because it isn't a mainframe.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -21/+54Well THAT and it would help if they actually pitted a Mac with a PC with the SAME HARDWARE !!!!!
Macbook 2.4 Penryn?
Thats the new intel chip with a higher bus speed !
Against:
A Gateway PC had a processor that runs 400 MHz slower than its iMac competitor.
ASUS M51 had a 2.2 GHz processor.
Not only slower CPUs but smaller bus ratings as well!
Are mactards too ***** scared to compare actual hardware to hardware and see their mac lose as usual? - jbob2000, on 04/16/2008, -2/+35Yeah, that's definately flawed on their part. I would've chosen Dell and IBM, or even a home built, non-branded pc.
- diggdiggerid, on 04/16/2008, -2/+31"Ultimate" test with a Gateway and Asus? How about Dell or Sager?
- MrTankJump, on 04/16/2008, -0/+28Anti-virus yes, norton never.
- convergent, on 04/16/2008, -4/+30How about we get exact same specs on the computers and then provide a comparison?
These Mac vs PC articles are just flat out annoying and pointless. Both sides provide horrible information, and in turn it starts a flame war. What happened about just enjoying what you have and let each person have his/her own opinion? - clickwir, on 04/16/2008, -4/+30This is an awful comparison. Forget about the results for a min. It's just not an even match hardware wise. I don't care if you switched the hardware and Windows came out faster, it's still not a fair comparison. This gets buried.
- DeviantDragon, on 04/16/2008, -1/+23"Hardcore blind tests" How would you blind test this?
- MrTankJump, on 04/16/2008, -4/+24Considering that RAM can only provide a boost up to a certain point, limited by how much ram the os/application actually needs, its not going to provide a big boost.
- kentifer, on 04/16/2008, -4/+24I don't understand the shutdown times. 4 seconds? My friends mac takes more than a minute for sure (24" iMac)
- skyshock1, on 04/16/2008, -2/+21Sager?
- unrealJEDI, on 04/16/2008, -2/+20ya testing a Gateway PC isn't exactly shooting for the stars... rather see a homebuilt PC up there
- krische, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16I thought Sony was offering to sell their computers without anything pre-installed on them.
- eitup, on 04/16/2008, -4/+19VinceNoir, can you please wipe the Apple jiz that is running down your chin off. Very lame tests. Who is that gaming on the mac anyways?
- TellarHK, on 04/16/2008, -0/+14I get a kick out of people who still complain about single-click, it's just proof that they don't know what they're talking about and haven't since at least the launch of OS X.
At least he's right about "manufactured PC sucks!" If you want a good PC, you really do need to roll your own. Or pay more than you would for a Mac. - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -10/+24I'm going to go make some popcorn and sit back and watch the flame war begin...
- smurf22, on 04/16/2008, -1/+14No ***** you! Rc cola ftw!
- Gizza, on 04/16/2008, -0/+12Only if you're retarded.
- Topher06, on 04/16/2008, -20/+32In bizzaro world maybe.
- SwordFish666, on 04/16/2008, -2/+13Ever heard about Dell/Alienware?
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -3/+14Hey Einstein... The Mighty Mouse is a multi button mouse. Just because you cant see the right mouse buttons, does not mean it is not there.
Please come up with a gripe that is not 20 years old. - wwnexc, on 04/16/2008, -0/+11You put tape over the logos on the chassis. That way, there is positively no way for the user to know what they are using.
I call BS on that report. - MikeSD34, on 04/16/2008, -3/+14You had me until you said crapple. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but neither operating system deserves to be insulted. This M$ and Crapple crap is *****. Buy what works for you, there's no need for mudslinging.
- nickerbocker, on 04/16/2008, -6/+17Windows is also "bloated" with backwards compatibility.
- noisymime, on 04/16/2008, -0/+10If having a processor called PowerPC for a few years didn't change things, I doubt anything will.
- cheungroys, on 04/16/2008, -11/+21eh... if their computer has different specs... ie. 15.4 inch screen vs. 13.3 inch screen running on a laptop well, the 13.3 inch screen would last longer because it uses less power... if the cpu specs are different, ones going to be faster... if the RAM size is different, ones going to be faster and ones going to be slower... popular mechanics i guess like mac more then Windows. it's these people that make every think vista is trash (when its not)... the real trash is the results people produce and the message they spread. the results are basically trash. I wish theres a bury button... GO AHEAD.. bury me if you think Vista sucks. but you know what? this war needs to end and you guys are not helping and should burn in hell (it includes you popular mechanics).
- bensone1, on 04/16/2008, -2/+12[inserts some tacky mac vs. pc remark heard for the 1,000,000th time]

To me, all that including tax (which most people probably wouldn't get) and shipping, it's still under $500 ($493.75, to be exact). It's incomplete, but I tossed in all the parts it needs to be a functional computer. You'll most likely use your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor (obviously no one is factoring good monitor costs in when making a $500 claim), but you can pick up any cheese-ass keyboard and mouse you want.
There's also no OS, of course, but you CAN get that working with Linux for free. ;-) And since I don't know what anyone would necessarily want, you could pick up Vista Premium for $99, or switch over whatever copy you're currently using for free.
And without tweaking very hard, while being a little extravagant on some parts (like the case, which I didn't have to be), not taking advantage of every potential cost savings (multiple websites and making sure everything is OEM), not counting in every rebate... it's STILL a system that's 200mhz faster with a desktop instead of laptop-scale CPU, has 4x the RAM at a higher speed (800mhz instead of 667mhz), a current gen mid-range video card with 4x the memory (instead of a low-end one from last gen), and the same other central parts otherwise. (HDD and ROM drive.)
And a free game. ;-)
Obviously it doesn't have everything the iMac does, but he WAS making a performance claim. And that system, built in 5 minutes or so (transcribing took a lot longer) would kick the entry iMac's ass quite handily.
Building your own PC will ALWAYS win out. ;-) Plus, it's great fun. - cthellis, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10Um... Why would that upset them?
They were upset at Sony charging MORE to not include all the extra crap. They still offer what they're calling "Fresh Start" as a service, though it's attached to requirement that you be using Vista Business instead of Premium (which is a $100 upgrade from them).
It was always aimed at a business space option. But the option certainly still exists. - superkendall, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10If you don't have much running they shut down very quickly, four seconds is believable.
- crazycarlmar, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10They do realize it. It's just that "PC" is much easier to say than "computer that runs Windows."
- epu2, on 04/16/2008, -4/+13yeah, because a mac totally isn't a ***** PERSONAL COMPUTER!!!
- lharrod, on 04/16/2008, -0/+9You're such a popcorn fanboy!
