- bigboy101011, on 11/20/2007, -8/+244I think they just broke a record for irony
- missingnoh4x, on 11/20/2007, -7/+140Maybe plagiarism might not sound like a big deal, but hypocrisy is.
- coolboy0286, on 11/20/2007, -16/+106Pwnt......
- banmaster, on 11/20/2007, -5/+81Yes, it DOES happen all the time, however when its done by a group that claims to be against any kind of piracy (intellectual property theft -and- copyright infringement) it SHOULD make the news!!
- BagginsBoy, on 11/20/2007, -6/+76Anybody have the feeling that this won't get anywhere?
- DubbleA, on 11/20/2007, -10/+62First the anti-pirate organizations are striking the pirates (and Prince is too..but whatever), then the pirates counter sue (TPB), and now the torrent NEWS sites are getting on the bandwagon. Go TorrentFreak! (Just to clarify, I am not being sarcastic.) We pirates won't go down for anything in any way. Arrrggg.....
- NoOneButMe, on 11/20/2007, -35/+83lmfao. It's plagiarism. Hardly a felony. Happens all the time. Stop overreacting.
- reed311, on 11/20/2007, -9/+42Good luck with that lawsuit. Considering BREIN merely copied a quote from them, they will have a hell of a time proving damages since they never sold that quote in any shape or form.
Secondly, all they took was a quote and a quote is considered "fair use". - EndersGame, on 11/20/2007, -1/+23Thats odd because I never sold the A7X song I downloaded the other day yet the RIAA would have no problem proving damages in our courts. Not that I think these lawsuits should exist, quite the contrary...I am just glad somebody is drawing attention to the hypocrisy.
- lengau, on 11/20/2007, -2/+20I think you misunderstood the purpose of the article. The Torrentfreak people don't really care that someone used their article. They care that a major anti-piracy group did exactly what they're threatening people over. They are showing the hypocrisy.
- EndersGame, on 11/20/2007, -4/+21*woosh*
- Terc, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16People illigally downloading music and movies happens all the time too, The industry is still suing people for it.
- virtualball, on 11/20/2007, -2/+15I know I am being a total grammar Nazi but this might help you one day.
were != where
thanks - lengau, on 11/20/2007, -1/+13Didn't you know? That's what the latest Digg update did. If your link goes to torrentfreak, you automatically get 50 diggs ant a front page promotion.
- mattym, on 11/20/2007, -7/+18In the US, its called fair use....
....probably the same thing you advocate, being a bit torrent "freak" and all.... - EntangledPhysx, on 11/20/2007, -2/+13It's not supposed to. It's making a point.
- mikesum32, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9I don't know about Dutch law, but a quote sounds like fair use, even if they didn't attribute the source.
- Audacitor, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8Not yet, but hopefully very soon.
- nymphetamine, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10SOMEONE CLOSE THAT DAMN WINDOW!
- Terc, on 11/20/2007, -0/+7I've been a Digg member for almost 2 years (2 years this Jan) and I've never managed a double post. There's a first time for everything I suppose.
- geekee, on 11/20/2007, -5/+12Waiting for the judge to laugh TorrentFreak out of court. They apparently don't understand the concept of fair use, which is no surprise because they think everything is fair use.
- consonance, on 11/20/2007, -4/+11Because oh, you know, plagiarism is no big deal, right? No one's ever been sued over plagiarism. It's not a crime that can be punished in a court of law, after all! That's why colleges and high schools don't care if their students plagiarize any works.
- sporg, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8I suggest instead of a fine they be keel hauled.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keelhauling - fires, on 11/20/2007, -2/+8Well, if they let normal people off the hook, and in this instance do it as an offensive measure against a hostile enemy, then I think it is justified and that BREIN is getting some of their own medicine.
- scott88008, on 11/20/2007, -3/+9No one is more outraged by a crime than a criminal.
- MikeFallopian, on 11/20/2007, -4/+10So TorrentFreak is suing for copyright infringement? Nice to know where they stand on that one.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5It's called hypocrisy.
- Zergo, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6I think some people might have missed the point that TorrentFreak is using the same tactics as the anti-piracy lobbyists to exaggerate a situation that really isn't that bad. I read the article more as a satire.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Someone should show up at some of their employees doors and threaten to sue them.
- jdawg19, on 11/20/2007, -3/+7I think that's the point...
- OswaldKenobi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Isn't there legal precedence giving the RIAA, MPAA, and their hired goons the right to ignore copyrights? There has to be. These companies do it all the time.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/20/2007, -3/+7I'm sorry 'our'? Is downloading a song now a membership into some kind of private army where we sit around in our armchairs and act really angry over the internet?
- jeffness, on 11/20/2007, -2/+6Yep. Fair-use specifically allows someone to excerpt, quote or otherwise use copyrighted material so long as it falls under some very specific guidelines for it's use. (i.e. for news or commenting on the copyrighted item).
downloading songs for personal use, however, is not fair-use.. sorry EndersGame. The damages established in those lawsuits are not actual damage but instead an act of congress defined the statutory damages. - GeForce8800GTX, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4amusing coincidence would be more like it. no one would expect torrentfreak to let it slide.
- geekee, on 11/20/2007, -3/+7No, it's not the same law. You are using an umbrella term too liberally.
- andycr512, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5File sharers don't do it for profit, either. I agree with your view, though. Quotation with some kind of editorial, at least in the US, is a protected use of copyrighted works.
- thebuggman, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -3/+6Copyright infringement != Plagiarism.
- Plopfish, on 11/20/2007, -7/+10I know I am being a total grammar Nazi but this might help you one day, especially in discussion were you make fun of someone else:
your != you're
you're = you are
thanks - pRoX171, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3To show them d-bags how good it is when ***** sue you for pointless *****. Piracy? Bad. Plagiarism? Just as bad.
- shawnz, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5yes.
- Egoist, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5If they do sue them, it will mean all of their so-called convictions against copyright law will have been a complete lie. They should welcome the fact that others are copying their work. We're all "sharing" it!
- fkr3, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5Doubtful. The quote was by the owner of SumoTorrent not TorrentFreak so unless there was some pre-interview paperwork relinquishing ownership of everything said in the interview TorrentFreak's just talking ***** for ad impressions once again.
- shawnz, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3they modified the code that automatically front pages Apple articles.
- john2kx, on 11/20/2007, -4/+7I think this is one of the rare cases of hypocrisy on both sides.
- badjoke, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3Augh, I hate when that happens.
- bballbackus, on 11/20/2007, -12/+14Can we add a feature to digg that adds every torrentfreak article to the front page automatically?
- TotalHalibut, on 11/20/2007, -4/+6Please enlighten us oh Oracle.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/20/2007, -4/+6I'm sorry 'our'? Is downloading a song now a membership into some kind of private army where we sit around in our armchairs and act really angry over the internet?
- TotalHalibut, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Yes... people without actual knowledge tend to do that.
