- ParanoydAndroid, on 07/14/2008, -3/+115I'm glad they caught this guy. What he's doing is completely unethical and he should be ashamed of himself.
No one should ever, ever, ever just leech. It's just plain wrong. - Ainsleh, on 07/14/2008, -2/+73I'm torn between which is worse.
Him being a leecher or the injustice thanks to the Anti-Piracy company. - diemunkiesdie, on 07/14/2008, -1/+38At first I wasn't sure how to feel since he is a leecher. But, I'm going to have to side with him because the sooner we get these companies to stop suing everyone, the safer everyone will feel about uploading, and file sharing will get stronger because people will not feel the need to use anti-uploading mods!
- echotech, on 07/14/2008, -1/+37This is total *****. That kind of evidence should never hold up in court, but since judges/lawyers/recording industry are computer illiterate it does.
- Sarevok9, on 07/14/2008, -0/+25Ya know... I think that is the one and ONLY time in history being a leecher would've been a good thing. Even then all his peers think he's a douche.
- MattB123, on 07/14/2008, -0/+16I used to do some computer support for a law firm. Never have I worked with such a computer illiterate group who were almost proud of their ignorance. Sure there were exceptions, and hopefully things are better now (this was in the 90's) but for me it was shocking at how bad they were. And they always insisted on WordPerfect. What is it about lawyers and WordPerfect?
- Darmichar, on 07/14/2008, -0/+13The crime isn't receiving copyright material, it's providing copyrighted material for download.
Without the latter, the former is nonexistent. - Slash0, on 07/14/2008, -0/+12What's important here is that he can prove the he WASN'T uploading, but the anti-P2P tracking software says that he WAS. It doesn't really matter if what he was doing was illegal or not, what needs to be decided here is how courts should treat 'evidence' from these anti-P2P groups who don't allow their methods to be independently tested/confirmed.
- artfiend77, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10Both are completely useless and do nothing but hinder mankind?
- TresTriste, on 07/14/2008, -1/+11***** the RIAA?
***** Leachers?
***** WOMEN! - hexydes, on 07/14/2008, -1/+11Well, the media industry says he's guilty...that's good enough for me. I think they've earned our trust.
- Apokalyps2547, on 07/15/2008, -0/+9Soooo
Seeders > Leechers > RIAA
Got it. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -2/+10Your Honor, ***** anti-piracy. I rest my case.
- Snokage, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8....ya know....***** leechers
- nullx42, on 07/14/2008, -1/+6no, with imagination im sure we can see how the MPAA/RIAA is related to NASCAR. anyone care to help?
- PullingTeeth, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5And then we can boot the leeches out. Knew they must have been good for something.
- kmolnar, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Vicious is being buried because Paranoyd is joking, and Vicious didn't get it. Duh.
- Chaos12, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4What you have done is taken the internet seriously.
:( - tb0n3r, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4http://www.clipstr.com/videos/SNLSarcasm101/
- Drahkar, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4I've worked with Lawyers recently. It hasn't changed. They realize now that its a problem at least. But they still don't bother to learn anything about it. That's how you get lawyers to specialize in just computer crimes.
- Suricou, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4That, and because he is standing up to the lawyers, not just paying the protection money to avoid being prosecuted for a crime he knows he couldn't have committed.
- Tenoq, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Go easy on the leecher - she might be Australian and therefore she's probably being charged $150/GB for uploads. :p
- Suricou, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3I'm siding with the leecher, because they have the bravery to stand up to Media Protector's legal intimidation.
- bloodomen13, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4Wait, don't copyright holders have to download from copyrighted file, then obtain the IP addresses they downloaded from in order to file suit? Afterall, the whole thing is based upon distribution. So if he was not distributing how did hey obtain his information?
I haven't had the chance to read the article yet... at work so forgive me if it is explained. - Pigeon, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Can't they just connect to a torrent themselves and still see a list of seeds/leechers? Or is it only seeds?
- Matri, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3More like, "Are you going to believe the evidence or what I tell you?"
- Suricou, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3I think he has redeemed himself just by being here. He could have paid the protection money and put this all behind him - instead he has chosen to go public, revealing MP's incompetance to all and likely earning their retaliation.
- Johnagain, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Lots of stupid people there?
- LGod, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4Vicious, I am not sure why you are getting dugg down but I agree. Anti-Piracy groups falsifying evidence / presenting inaccurate evidence seems a lot more important than a leecher.
- VIciousCombover, on 07/14/2008, -6/+8Wow, leeching is not the point here. The main point here is that the anti-piracy companies have claimed that their methods of gathering data are watertight when it is clearly not.
What you have done is the equivalent of going up to an car accident and shouting: "WOW A QUARTER!" - Tenoq, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Unless like, your uploads are counted.
See: Australian major ISPs.
Then I highly recommend just leeching. It's not like the community is going to help you pay your $150/GB excess upload charges. Or reconnect your Internet service for breach of your fair-use policy. - Suricou, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3Actually it's infringement even if you *do* own a legal, purchased copy. But it's infringement in a way that makes prosecution a little more difficult.
- FreeRoller, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2That's the most offensive thing you've seen all day? What a dull day.
"What's the difference between Pope John Paul II and Maddie McCann?"
"The Pope died a virgin." - Suricou, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2That's what they claimed to have been doing, but this mistake on their part reveals that they have not - they have just looked for people downloading from them, a far easier method to impliment. Lazy. This puts them on shakier legal ground. It also means they have been lying to various courts about their evidence.
- dbr_onix, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Nope. You can quite trivially connect to a tracker and request a list of peers - it's how your torrent client starts downloads
- JohnLawson, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2"The client itself had never been reset and displayed a operating time of 924 days and it had never distributed a file."
That's pretty disgusting that the courts don't even look into how the evidence is being collected. As far as I'm concerned, What media defender is doing is criminal. If this isn't proof... I don't know what is. - pittpat, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Because, what moron waits on a ***** torrent to download if they own the ***** cd!
- Blitzenn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1That is plain dumb! You are a complete idiot. That is the same as saying that all museums are criminal enterprises, because they present material to the public. If you steal from a museum, it's ok because it was the museum's fault for showing the material in the first place.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -6/+7***** the RIAA
- nullx42, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1@ JohnLawson
Still doesn't explain MPAA/RIAA. See me after class. - madeingermany, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2HER being a leechress (sp?), actually.
Great, now I'm torn in three directions ;) - bitterbug, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Doctors are big on WordPerfect as well. Very annoying when doing transcription for them on a modern machine. Export tools rarely support the really old WP versions.
- 11oops, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3No. And how do you know he didn't own it?
- JohnLawson, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1George W Bush's prime grounds for gobbling up voters.
Bushcar. - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1WordPerfect generally comes built in with templates for legal documents, something I haven't seen in Microsoft Word.
- Dauntless1, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0?....?....?...?
Is your brain ***** broken? - Celeborn27, on 07/15/2008, -3/+2Not uploading should be a good enough reason to put him in jail!
- VIciousCombover, on 07/15/2008, -1/+0I don't know how people can joke when faceless corporations are unlawfully picking on people. My university is one of the universities that have been bullied by the **AA and I even know of a student was forced to give their hard drives to the university or their financial aid would be rescinded. All this was done without a trial. The **AA listed college students responsible for ~45% of all the pirating when recent numbers have shown it is closer to 3%. Now it is shown that their method of data gathering is faulty as well and you people have time to be crack jokes about it. They pick on college students because they know we are lacking in cash and would rather pay the hush money than spend time in court. Also, they know that we are at university for only four years so any organization or mobilization is difficult because experienced students are always moving out.
I took the comments seriously because this is a serious situation. - pittpat, on 07/15/2008, -5/+3ummm...is it me or is downloading something that you don't own still infringement?
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -5/+2What's his UID, I am banning his ass/
