Time Warner 0 - Ghostalker, on 04/23/2009, -0/+412So... capitalistic competition is only OK, so long as you get to maintain your regional-monopoly?
- blix797, on 04/23/2009, -1/+316If they can't compete, that's THEIR fault. That's capitalism, bitches.
- doctorcaligari, on 04/23/2009, -0/+308Last year, I wound up at a luncheon with some high up NC Time Warner rep, and he was telling me how Wilson's plan was utter crap. His argument was that the government can't provide good service for anything, and how government programs are failures. It thought it was ironic that in one sentence, he was extolling the virtues of private enterprise and competition ("Let the markets decide"), and in the next breath, he was whining about actually having competition.
- Primous, on 04/23/2009, -1/+243If this time warner gets what it wants then even I'll go protest this one, communities should be getting kickbacks from the government just for building infrastructure like this.
- Kschreck, on 04/23/2009, -5/+242Everyone should be digging this.
- Aksupra7, on 04/23/2009, -2/+200dugg for high fiber content
- BlackJackJester, on 04/23/2009, -5/+140Dugg for how the internet should be run - community based.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+94I love the way the corporations detest socialism, by saying that the free market is better for the consumer, and nations as a whole. Fair 'nuff. But when they try and distort the free market, through monopolies...well, it kind of makes you look like a teensy bit like dicks.
- cerejota, on 04/23/2009, -5/+75Lol, can't compete, time warner? Socialist whiners, it seems...
- ObamaDoujinshi, on 04/23/2009, -2/+68Dugg because this is the only time my hometown has ever appeared in the news.
If anything, Time Warner's in the wrong for their monopolizing of prices. - pagno, on 04/23/2009, -0/+60FTA:
"...does anyone have any positive feelings left for these behemoths?"
Not a drop. A town deciding whats best for itself is suddenly against the rules? They offer more for less. ***** you TWC. Obviously, your services are not needed in Wilson, NC. - Spudster, on 04/23/2009, -0/+56It's getting to the point where we need to start treating internet like a public utility like electricity is now. Obviously keep net neutrality, etc, but centralizing the grid could be better for consumers.
- Spo8, on 04/23/2009, -1/+57That's ***** awesome. Proof people can beat, or at least provide a reality check for, these huge, lazy telecom companies.
- SimCutie, on 04/23/2009, -1/+48What a shock! $35-$57/month for 10Mbps speed internet service? Crazy!
Here in Korea, we pay $15 /month ( 3 year contract ) for 100 Mbps optical cable. Yes, fiber optic cable to my own home. The combind pacakge ( 100 Mbps optical internet + home phone service + IPTV (digital cable HDTV service with VOD)) costs just $25 /month. These contract comes with promotional gift like free Apple iPod Touch or free Nintendo Wii, no modem rental fee, no enrollment fee and no installation fee. - TyrannyofBell, on 04/23/2009, -1/+46Time Warner is on a level of awesome amongst the likes of Bell Canada for internet cockstabbery. My internet travels on copper lines that were placed back when Alexander Graham Bell was riding around on a saddled velociraptor.
- bob1029, on 04/23/2009, -0/+44I would very seriously consider the 100mbps line under these conditions:
It is symmetrical
It is uncapped
Less than 4 hops to nearest major backbone
With a line like this you could host a serious website and game servers from your home, and probably make the 300$/m a near-wash if you charged for hosting services. - heresy_fnord, on 04/23/2009, -0/+42Greenlight is in our building here (known as Iris Networks). The company I manage IT for has the 10mb down / up pipe and it is fantastic. The price for it also amazing. We had 2 T1 lines before and this costs less per month and it's faster.
***** Time Warner! - diemunkiesdie, on 04/23/2009, -3/+42I'd love to know how much that 100 Mbps service costs. Plus, according to the linked DailyTech article, you can even get 1 Gbps if you are a business!!!
- Apokalyps2547, on 04/23/2009, -0/+39These idiots even had a head-start! They were SO bad the locals grouped up and said "we can do a better job".
- uptwolait, on 04/23/2009, -1/+39And yet they're still full of crap.
- JimmyTheClam, on 04/23/2009, -1/+38I'd love to dump Time Warner but on the island where I live they are the only game in town.
- hoghug, on 04/23/2009, -2/+39I believe it was Reagan who famously said "the scariest words in the English language are I'm from the government and I'm here to provide low cost, high speed internet and more channels than your ***** cable provider."
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+37It says $300 RIGHT THERE. Kinda tempting, even though I don't need half of half that speed...
- coalpha, on 04/23/2009, -2/+38tw = weak
- srujanlive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+35That is THE problem. Everywhere. Verizon has to get its FiOS quicker to each and every part of US.
- cash202, on 04/23/2009, -1/+29Missing FIOS:
Slowest: Download up to 10 Mbps / Upload up to 2 Mbps = $45
Fastest: Download up to 50 Mbps / Upload up to 20 Mbps = $140
Personally: Download up to 20 Mbps / Upload up to 5 Mbps = $55
(With High Definition FiOS TV all came to $80)
Nothing else competes residentially. - luckless, on 04/23/2009, -0/+27I agree
- seanstuart, on 04/23/2009, -0/+24I'd more like ...
Consumers 1
Time Warner 12,355
But, the little victories are certainly welcome. - lasko, on 04/23/2009, -7/+31You forgot to mention the one glaring downside. The fact that you would have to live in Korea.
- roynencore, on 04/23/2009, -0/+23Supply and demand. TWC doesn't want to meet the supply. Local government stepped up to meet the demand of elctronic age. Good for them.
- augustojr, on 04/23/2009, -2/+25greenlit, err i mean dugg
- Elranzer, on 04/23/2009, -2/+24"even though I don't need half of half that speed"
Yeah, that's what I thought when I switched from dial-up to cable broadband... - BeefEnchilada, on 04/23/2009, -0/+21i hate you =(
- Chakat, on 04/23/2009, -8/+29I disagree. The internet should be run on the free market. The big problem is that Comcast and ATT don't want a free market infrastructure because it means that they actually have to compete and upgrade their packages on a more regular basis. Pure community based internet would stagnate as well if it were the only game as well.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -2/+22I like and have Time Warner. But that's because the alternative is Verizon and Verizon is a bunch of throttling *****. But I would love a program like Greenlight. How can I get this into my city?
- jitterbits, on 04/23/2009, -3/+22Just now figuring that out?
- Elranzer, on 04/23/2009, -1/+20There needs to be another fiber-optic provider other than Verizon FIOS, though. That's part of the problem with Verizon's roll-out, they're the only game in town (every town). Because of this, they're prioritizing "high-income areas" first, before areas with high populations. They're priorities are ***** up.
I live in Albany, NY and nearly everyone is willing to pay for FIOS, but FIOS is not here. However, our next door neighbor that no one has ever heard of, Delmar, has FIOS because it's a "high income bracket" town, though it has less than a tenth of Albany's population. - Jade10145, on 04/23/2009, -0/+18Dear Sir, May I ask where a person such as my self may purchase this velociraptor you speak of? I will buy the saddle separately. Sorry for going off topic, I am just imagining Alexander Graham Bell riding a saddled velociraptor and a phone line trailing behind him..made me laugh.
- Ghostalker, on 04/23/2009, -0/+16Here's the full story:
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=14934 - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+16nice
- jitterbits, on 04/23/2009, -1/+16That;s what they SAY they give you.
You'll maybe get a tenth if you're lucky. - ammundsen, on 04/23/2009, -0/+15Interesting argument TW has that it cant compete against someone who sells at cost. Selling at cost is an interesting phrase in such an endeavor. Certainly the network costs, infrastructure costs, and basic administrative costs are being covered. People are not volunteering time and resources to make this work. So what is not being covered? Is it the million dollar salary of a CEO? Seems to me an admission that the efficiencies of a huge corporation and genius powers of a CEO are no match for a small local operation.
- Ellipsys, on 04/23/2009, -0/+15Would everyone put up with this if private entities owned the roadways? Would you really want to hear "I have to take the 45 minute long way around town, because I don't have a subscription to the Pfizer/ATT Main Street?" Of course not. Isn't it about time that we consider internet communications hardware part of our key infrastructure, like is done in Asia and Scandinavian countries? This "socialism for wealthy corporations, capitalism for everyone else" issue is playing out in ever facet of business these days. Why don't we put an end to it.
Lets subsidize the maintenance and installation of high speed fiber optics as critical infrastructure - most people will no longer be stuck with crappy service because they don't live in a profitable enough area, or because their local provider would rather demonize the use of bandwidth by putting usage caps, rather than upgrade their infrastructure to meet demand. As far as ISPs are concerned, if everyone's so afraid of OMGSOCIALISM (Despite the fact that it seems to work rather well for our interstate highways), we could even let private entities run ISPs by leasing access to the hardware. Without the "I'm Verizon and I own all the copper/fiber in your town" issue, ISPs could actually compete without the massive hardware lockout that is currently occurring. Its time we wrest this critical part of our infrastructure from greedy corporations. - HellifIno, on 04/23/2009, -0/+14You have two choices, at least. I have comcast, and that's it.
- ErickStevenson, on 04/23/2009, -0/+14I may not have it as bad as others but I feel for people with limited choice when it comes to broadband or any service. I wish fios was available in my area, oh hell, I wish there was more than two choices for broadband in my area....
- jpate86, on 04/23/2009, -0/+14If the legislature sides with Time Warner on this one, this is a travesty to the supposed free market principles America was built on.
- pr0carbine, on 04/23/2009, -0/+14If this was in your country I, as an American would be digging it up. I don't see the need to be so defensive. The internet is a common resource that effects everyone.
- Spire3660, on 04/23/2009, -1/+14I have no problem with LOCAL government doing this.
- TamerzIsMe, on 04/23/2009, -0/+13I think you hit the point exactly. Because a local government is doing it doesn't mean it is not free market. If the local government however said that you had to use their service and taxed you to pay for it, that would be a different story. It looks like you pay for the service you use, and you get that choice.
