- westinfunk, on 04/03/2009, -2/+375Was anyone else hoping to see pictures the Google van took of a raging mob chasing them?
- cooltechgadgets, on 04/03/2009, -6/+345Interesting argument, so "public roads" are actually not for public access in "affluent areas" ?
- lachcorp, on 04/03/2009, -7/+332 "This is an affluent area. We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it's an invitation for more criminals to strike."
Just think of the international criminals who were just waiting for this town's street view to appear so they could plan their working holiday. - s0krat3z, on 04/03/2009, -10/+233If only the printing press weren't invented. Then all those burglars could have never found houses to rob before the Internet came along.
- evilJaze, on 04/03/2009, -0/+177Or flew the helicopter at street level. You would have to use an unmarked helicopter though to avoid suspicion.
- bills534, on 04/03/2009, -8/+146What is preventing the crooks from driving down the street and checking the place out themselves? That village is full of idiots.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -7/+124What a bunch of troglodytes
- Greedfeed, on 04/03/2009, -3/+98Get off my lawn Google! You kids and your damn camera cars will bring ruin to us all! What next? People acting all willy-nilly and posting information about all their activities throughout the day?
- Hindermore, on 04/03/2009, -6/+91Damn, I hope everyone's bank account is FDIC insured because I'm sure the street car has caught a lot of banks on camera and now they're all like 20 times more likely to get robbed.
- algorhythmix, on 04/03/2009, -1/+78Here's the picture
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/angry-british-v ... - RoboDonut, on 04/03/2009, -3/+76Oh noes, they're on digg now! Their plan backfired! Their stuff will be stoled!
- yaosio, on 04/03/2009, -7/+75How dare they invade my privacy! *is surrounded by cameras*
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -5/+73Exactly. Sounds like assault.
Running them over woulda been self defense. - Bleue, on 04/03/2009, -7/+70Nice to see that idiocy's alive and well in Europe as well.
- darkchild, on 04/03/2009, -10/+73Next time Google will probably use an unmarked car or a helicopter instead.
- rosekevin, on 04/03/2009, -3/+65soon those villagers will appear all over the web
- RonaldSays, on 04/03/2009, -3/+64I wonder if we get to see that on Street View. Would be interesting.
- Biscuitz, on 04/03/2009, -3/+52So let me get this straight, without Googles help, their town had already been terrorized?
I wish people would stop being retarded, or take some meds for it. - gamerscalling, on 04/03/2009, -0/+42Camera Operator: "Power lines, POWER LINES!"
Pilot: *Helicopter Noise* "I think he's saying something... Flower Vines?!?"
ZAP! - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -5/+45Some folks just don't get it. Do the same principals apply in the UK as they do in the US about photography from a public street? Having no expectation of privacy from having your picture taken in public? I like street view, and wish that the car would come down my little country road!
- andyb747, on 04/03/2009, -1/+39Who invited the first three burglaries !?
- kgerm, on 04/03/2009, -1/+37 or Luddites
- FUR10N, on 04/03/2009, -4/+40Meanwhile, I was so excited the first time I saw my house on Google Street View.
- theOster, on 04/03/2009, -1/+34the affluent have always been exempt from a great many things.
- SoundJudgment, on 04/03/2009, -0/+31It's pretty difficult to drive the Google-mobile into any district and not be recognized anymore. Those multi-360 camera mounts on the roof might be a dead giveaway even in such small urban or rural communities. And the car may be obligated to identify itself with stickers while it is 'on the job.'
- fulibs, on 04/03/2009, -1/+30Google street pix, or it didn't happen!
- sockpuppets, on 04/03/2009, -0/+29In the old days teams of painters would slowly ride by on horseback while carefully painting residences on canvas. And we liked it!
- tkoopa, on 04/03/2009, -1/+29"Don't touch the things! This is a local shop for local people, there's nothing for you here!" & "Look here. We're very proud of our town, this is a decent town and a local shop! We'll have no trouble here."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCJcqnuUawE - SlapTard, on 04/03/2009, -1/+28Umm, it's not always necessary to put the /s after each and every sarcastic comment. So carry on, specialDouche.
- Floodle, on 04/03/2009, -3/+29Kinda ironic that it was all captured on CCTV
- RoboDonut, on 04/03/2009, -0/+25Yes, stoled!
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -4/+29If I ever became a burglar, I would rob that village, just out of sheer spite.
- Silv3Ro, on 04/03/2009, -4/+26can't wait to see angry guys with pitchforks on google street view
- ArrakisDune, on 04/03/2009, -2/+231/4 of the year doesn't appear to be long enough to understand the basics of TV licensing then =)
TV licensing inspectors can NOT enter your house unless they have a warrant from a magistrate. The only exception is if you LET them enter.
Google "Tv licence need warrant to enter" and you'll find plenty of information on this.
Privacy is getting pretty bad in the UK, but it's not *that* bad yet. - JonathonB, on 04/03/2009, -4/+25Right, so now everyone knows that the 'affluent area' in Broughton is the little village that isn't street mapped. Oh, and the houses are easily robbed (FTA: ' We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks'). I think that guy has given more information to would-be thieves than google would have.
I can understand the privacy thing - but it shows the outside of houses. Granted, if you had a banner outside saying 'I'm away at weekends. Spare key under the rock and the alarm code is...' then I would understand not wanting that on the internet. Found your house and don't like it? Tell google and it'll be removed. - danwallace, on 04/03/2009, -1/+21Non-sequitur-man to the rescue!
- ccb621, on 04/03/2009, -0/+19Yes, the giant camera on top of the unmarked car would give it away. Also, the reason they have a car is for the street angle. A helicopter would only get a top view of the city unless you lowered the camera with a winch (which is unsafe).
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -5/+23I was watching the news report of this earlier on the bbc's local news show, i found it quite amusing
they don't want google street view to take pictures of their houses because it's an invasion of privacy, but are quite happy to have the bbcs camera crew sitting in their front garden giving a glorious high definition image of their house and garden for a show where several million people can see it.
i'm positive the number people who will see it in the news is several hundred times more than the number who actually wanted to look in street view. - Cr0z, on 04/03/2009, -0/+17Wrong. Anyone investigating license fee non payment has no right to enter your property without your permission. If they knock on your door, you don't have to let them in, and there's nothing they can do about it.
- Po0py, on 04/03/2009, -1/+18A village. In Buckinghamshire? They have yet do do pretty major cities like Gloucester and so forth and instead they are patrolling a village in the arse end of Buckinghamshire?
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+19THIS THIS THIS
Whilst the government is busy taking away our rights (ID Cards/Photographing peaceful protestors etc) these idiots feel threatened by GOOGLE. - christoast, on 04/03/2009, -7/+22im in ur streets, cataloging reality.
Alright boys, word has it there be a "google" van down yonder. These damn city folk think they can just come in with their fancy picture machines, exposing our public streets to the terrorists and atheists. No sir, not in my town. - dagr8tim, on 04/03/2009, -7/+20This just proves that the US doesn't have the market cornered on dumb rednecks.
- kyle212, on 04/03/2009, -0/+13Makes no sense
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12In general under the law of the United Kingdom one cannot prevent photography of private property from a public place, and in general the right to take photographs on private land upon which permission has been obtained is similarly unrestricted. However a landowner is permitted to impose any conditions they wish upon entry to a property, such as forbidding or restricting photography. Two public locations in the UK, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square have a specific provision against photography for commercial purposes, as do Royal Parks (as private land).
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12League of Gentlemen for THE ***** WIN.
Little Britian is a diet version of the League of Gentlemen. - salinungatha, on 04/03/2009, -4/+16I love it when X infuriates Y. Have you guys considered the tone of your opposition to the villagers mirrors the tone of villagers opposition to the google cam?
Go google for infuriating the villagers. Go villagers for infuriating others.
If google want to drive around everywhere taking pictures fine, if people in a certain place want to stop them fine. I'd be disappointed if either of them didn't happen. Life is nothing without complexity and contrast. - fafaforza, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13They dareth question Google. A lynching by the technocrati all over teh Interwebs is sure to follow.
- YojanV, on 04/03/2009, -1/+12"flew the helicopter" is correct grammatically in the sense that "they flew the helicopter". The problem rests in starting a sentence with "Or", but I think coherence is observed in the conversation.
Also, it was funny, so I dugg you up, evilJaze. - mparker21311, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13If only our species didn't evolve to have eyes...
