- blankmedia, on 08/15/2008, -2/+86next scam - "In order to view this channel, your must purchase this other channel"
- joerod, on 08/15/2008, -1/+59you also have to rent the remote for your cable box its such a scam. i hope this guy wins his case.
- johnomaz, on 08/15/2008, -23/+59I want to buy my own cable box so I can modify it to get channels illegally, err, I mean....oh *****.
- johnomaz, on 08/15/2008, -0/+36You can digg and not comment 'tard.
- weeksa, on 08/15/2008, -2/+35They already have that which is bull.
Rogers won't allow me to watch Tech TV without buying a "package" which includes it. I don't want the other ***** channels, so bye bye. - iseth, on 08/15/2008, -1/+32This is interesting, and I can't imagine Time Warner is the only cable company guilty of this... I think Charter Communications has similar practices, and I'm betting the comments will start filling up with others around the country with this problem.
- jrapp, on 08/15/2008, -0/+29That's actually one of the big reasons behind the lack of à la carte cable offerings. As it stands now, if a cable company wants, oh say ESPN, they are required to sign a carriage agreement to also include a bunch of other craptastic channels like ABC Family.
- minorthreat, on 08/15/2008, -1/+23I have the same complaint. After not having cable hooked up for over a year, I decided to get it finally reconnected. Digital cable is $10 more a month, which is a ripoff, but anyway. I have a digital tuner in my TV and I want to use my digital tuner in my computer. But the company has scrambled the digital channels that only their box can descramble. So I must pay them an extra 5 dollars a month if I want to actually view my digital channels.
- nbyn, on 08/15/2008, -1/+16Pay attention to your itemized cable bill too, sometimes these cable companies' "billing errors" will charge you for rental of cable boxes even though they know that you own the cable box/broadband modem.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/15/2008, -1/+16Why? Satellite-box hacking is easier then cable-box hacking.
- caseycoold, on 08/15/2008, -0/+13Are you stupid?
That's what he's fighting, the TOS. So obviosuly, he read them. He's saying they shoudln't be legal. - Elranzer, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10This is what happens when the government allows "legal monopolies" (much like the telecoms... hey, many of the telecoms ARE cable companies!)
- drex8, on 08/15/2008, -0/+10This phenomenon has been explained over and over again, but people still wonder and whine about it.
There have been cases where a story has hit the front with as few as 30 diggs and no comments. And that usually happens, because at the rate the story got dugg up. And there're other factors involved, like Digg Algorithms.
Just because you didn't see the story in the Upcoming Section, as it breezed past at a rapid pace, doesn't mean that other Diggers were not aware of it, and was actually checking the story out and actively Digging it. - rivs, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10This isn't as bad as what DirectTV does now. You used to be able to buy your own box. Now they still charge you $200 for a hd dvr box. But you don't own it, you still lease it and pay them $5 a month for having the box. Plus you have to sign a 2 year agreement. And when the contract is up, you have to give them the box back. But hey at least installation is free!
- ericduh, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9rent the remote? are you serious?
- mk3k, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10Yes! a digg for johnomaz is a digg for children, and you love children don't you?
- rivs, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8Back in the 1960s. At that time, Bell (At&t) was a monopoly, and people were forced to rent telephones as part of their basic phone service.
In 1983 Bell was broken up, and from 1985 to 1986 its customers were given the options of continuing the lease the phones, buy the phones, or cancel their agreements - Jexie, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9You cannot write something that is against terms of service when it goes against FCC regulations, that's what the fight is about. I hope this is just a really amateur trolling attempt Cyrock, the only alternative is that you are a complete moron.
- Nerdable, on 08/15/2008, -2/+10best of luck Matthew Meeds...
- ncc74656m, on 08/15/2008, -2/+9I just want my own cable box so I can hack it to expand its capacity and allow me to stream content over my network.
- triskele, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7That's pretty much how cable works. I'm not aware of any subscription where you can pick and choose what channels you do and don't want. It's all setup in packages largely composed of junk.
- brettg102, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7He is serious. I don't have my bill around but I think it is less than a dollar/month for the remote, around 7 and change for the box.
- wonderworm, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7No, you are paying for the workers and gas that goes in the hugely inefficient large truck that hauls away your crap for you and the space in a landfill so you won't have to look at it.
- SwedishNinja, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6*****, I know what you mean. I wanted AMC to watch Mad Men, but it turns out I would have to purchase a new package with MTV 1,2,3.14,11 and tons of other ***** channels that I would never watch for $15/month. And I had previously HAD AMC, but Comcast changed the package a few days ago.
***** you, Comcast! - TheMidnight, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Why don't you have a seat over here?
- TurboSquid, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5This has been going on for years in Canada. My local cable provider ( In Canada we don't have free to air broadcasts worth a crap. I get two local stations on the old rabbit ears here. ) has been selling cable channels in tiers. If you want all the base channels ( read WTN, ABC, PBS, etc ) you get the basic package, tier two has sports tier three has Discovery and Space ( only good channels on tv ) but you have to get tiers 1 to 3 just to get them.
- RudeTurnip, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Just watch Revision3 for free...anyone that was worth their salt on the old TechTV is there now.
- xenowang, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6Time Warner Cable has provided some of the most God-awful service I've ever seen. They've been playing a month long joke of failures to fix my internet connection over the span of 5 technician visits, hours with customer service, and multiple instances of rescheduling appointments without notifying me. Not to mention, their cross-division data management is horrendous- contradictions abound.
- 11oops, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5How many times to I have to report this ass before Digg actually bans the account?
- robojerk, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5He's serious..
- chinchillin, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Yes, that's exactly what they mean.
My grandmother was the last person on her local exchange to still have a leased rotary phone, and this was well into the 90s.
Renting cable boxes should fall to the wayside. Without the choice of purchasing outright, it seems too monopolistic - Felix2Fingerz, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6I cant help but to think of the many many years I have had cable and paid the rental fee for the cable box. Wonder how many cable boxes I could have purchased for that amount.
- BoneheadFarker, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Don't feel too bad. My grandmother was still renting a phone until 2001. Though in her defence, the days when you were forced to rent the phone weren't that long ago.
- drlha, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Indeed. This happened to me recently, Comcast started charging me for renting a cable modem. When I called them up about it, the CSR starting going on about "auditing" to figure out what happened to the cable modem I was renting before if I bought my modem. When I informed her that I'd bought the modem 5 years previously from Best Buy before I was a customer of theres, and was pretty ***** angry that they started charging me for it suddenly, she quickly backed down from that luckily.
- dafragsta, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4There are no city or state taxes. It's one of the coolest things about Texas. There are property taxes, but I rent.
- BobMysterioso, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Picture it 2004 - Northern Kentucky.
I'm at my inlaws and I see a phone, "Property of Cincinnati Bell". I inquire about it. They say "yea I think its listed on the phone bill". Quick as a fox I get my calculator watch and inform them they have no paid over $1600 for that phone (they'd been renting it for quite some time).
They took it back. - dafragsta, on 08/15/2008, -4/+8You think that's bad. The City of Austin makes me pay $10 a ***** month for a plastic trash can that costs $30 tops.
- StinkBait, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Class actions suck. The company pays out $3.2 million, the lawyers get $2 million, and each of the class members gets a coupon for 10% off their next purchase.
- Hillyard, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4My parents upgraded their cable package to include a cable box. I can't believe you can't buy the box because I see it no differently than being able to buy a cable modem.
Is there an online petition? - JeddHampton, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3But... You won't be able to watch new House epiosdes!
- 11oops, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3But if you want additional boxes you have to rent them for $5. If you have a DVR or HD box it is also another additional $5.
Charter does have CableCard, however doesn't promote it and the only way to really find out about it is to look at their rate and fee schedule where it is buried in fine print at the bottom. I asked a CS representative if they had it when I signed up and they told me 'no', so either it is company policy to lie about it or to not train their reps. - ericduh, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4even if he could use his own, he'd have to rent a cable card from them. the fcc is mandating new separable security boxes just for this kind of issue. this is the same with every other cable company. same thing if he went to satellite.
when will i be able to pay a monthly subscription to a company JUST for sundance, IFC, cartoon network, and HBO? i don't want to pay for FOX anymore. should this not be a possibility over the interwebz ALREADY? anyone want to start a company? - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3... free country as in... free market? where businesses are FREE to do as they please in order to make capital gains?
- RudeTurnip, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3I had that same scam up here with Comcast in NJ. Needless to say I will never do business with Comcast again. If I ever get TV service it will be with Verizon (Fios internet ftw).
- MikeFromAmerica, on 08/15/2008, -2/+5BitTorrent is the answer to all of cable's problems.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3The rest of the world is way ahead on everything. In about 50 years average Americans will start to realize it.
- Mavital, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2I don't believe this is entirely true. If it were, I wouldn't have been able to find dozens of DirecTV boxes on craigslist, and then be able to use an old one for free with my existing service.
You are 100% correct about the $5 charge for additional boxes though. It may seem silly to have to pay $5 to put the channels you already pay for on another TV, but its a small price compared to what they could be doing. They could take a few notes from the cell phone companies and require you to repurchase everything above your "basic" package, such as your HD service, premium movie channels, and sports packages for every additional unit. But they don't, so I think $5 isn't that greedy.
My man-love for DirecTV is a result of my COMPLETE UTTER LOATHING of Time Warner Cable. I hate that company and all it stands for. - puppyfox, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Americans put up with their cell phone companies, this is nothing compared to that giant screw-fest!
- tomarocco, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Your grandmum isn't in the USA, is she?
