- bonuscheese, on 07/21/2008, -0/+208There is nothing really flawed with using a mouse and I'm sure it'd be much more comfortable than holding your hand up in the air all the time. I can see how these may be kind of cool, but it can in no way replace the efficiency, value and ease of use of a mouse as an interface device.
- dsmx, on 07/21/2008, -0/+111The computer mouse is going nowhere. It is more relaxing using a mouse than a touch screen and while reading your mind is cool I'd like to know how they propose to get the accuracy required for games such as FPS and RTS games.
- RHA0, on 07/21/2008, -0/+79i'll stick to using a mouse, thanks
- lukas88, on 07/21/2008, -1/+71They should never use eye tracking as an input device, or the snorg tees site will get a ton of unwarranted traffic.
- Leo21k, on 07/21/2008, -0/+47My screen would be filthy like my mouse, no thanks.
- nodong, on 07/21/2008, -0/+42Mice: Your analyst is heading for extinction.
- elshizzo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+39Bull$hit. The mouse isn't being usurped by touch screen. I guarantee you the average person is more efficient using a mouse than any touchscreen.
The only advantage to touchscreen is that it is easier for old people. - x1300, on 07/21/2008, -2/+34Computers can play crysis?
- bradhart2, on 07/21/2008, -1/+31For general web surfing touch screens would be okay, but those of us who write content be it for the web or print using a computer using a touch screen would be pointless. Give me two buttons and scroll wheel any day.
Anyone who thinks a touch screen is better than a mouse or trackball only has to ask themselves why most laptop users have a portable mouse in their travel bag. - trollick, on 07/21/2008, -0/+30Analysts=Trolls
- TimeIsTissue, on 07/21/2008, -0/+29I'm open to all new ideas. Seriously, replacing a mouse with something like your mind (how sick is that) would be cool, but I'm not sure about the efficiency level.
- ivanmarsh, on 07/21/2008, -0/+23Agreed... there's no way facial recognition and touch screens could ever replace the simplicity and ease of use of a mouse.
Call when they have direct neural input. - AaronS2000, on 07/21/2008, -1/+23I can see mice becoming less of a dominating input, but most touch screens are just emulating a mouse click. I work with touch screens everyday and they will have to be a lot more precise before I accept this article's claim. Also, why do you think people prefer a laptop nipple / external mouse to a touch pad?
- radu79, on 07/21/2008, -0/+20Umm.. The touchpad is great for infrequent use, such as some web, some mail, etc.
But try to do anything 'serious', such as play a game, photoshop, 3d modeling, and so on just with the touch pad, for hours, and see how confortable it is. - latrosicarius, on 07/21/2008, -1/+21smuged screen ftl
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -1/+20str_replace("onMouseOver", "onGreasyFingerSmear", $WHOLEUNIVERSE);
- ZedoMann, on 07/21/2008, -1/+20I seriously think the mouse is going to stay right where it is. It would be annoying to hold up your hand at the screen all the time, and less accurate. Buried.
- thefandango, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18they've been saying this ***** for years. with tablets, VR, 3 axis mice, holograms.
all were supposed to kill the mouse. And they didn't. - lukas88, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20Who knows, it could help improve concentration, knowing that if your mind slips you might delete that 10 page paper you just wrote.
Also, make sure you unplug it before you go to bed, after those naughty dreams you might find yourself signed up for a whole bunch of porn memberships. - inactive, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20how the hell then am I supposed to play crysis?
- jrtcs, on 07/21/2008, -0/+16I already buried the first copy of this article this morning. I have no problem doing it again.
- Verdanic, on 07/21/2008, -1/+17I very highly doubt it'll be 'out' in five years. Ignoring the fact that it often takes a decade for most modern technologies to die out completely (Windows 95 is still puttering around plenty), there's nothing out there yet that actually has profound potential to take over the mouse. There are possibilities, but nothing has been refined even nearly enough to be in a dominating position in the consumer market in five years.
I'm going to be looking back at this post in five years using my holographic machine and feel silly, I know it. - crapmatic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+15Who was gullible enough to digg this up?
- masterm1nd, on 07/21/2008, -0/+15I'll be using a mouse right up until I can do it with just my brain and the computer.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -2/+14Analysts: Retarded Diggers are duplicating Diggs on the front ***** page.
- Protuhj, on 07/21/2008, -1/+12dupe buried with my mouse
- KayinNasaki, on 07/21/2008, -0/+11I'm typing this from a tablet. I got here with a touchpad (Though I'd prefer a mouse).
Touch screens and tablets are nice for some things, but as general input? Screw that. Cyberjack or bust. - iacwtfdik, on 07/21/2008, -1/+12I think it would be more like 50 years. The only Possible thing that can replace a mouse is a mental interface. The thing is we barley know how the brain works let alone Plug it in.
- arkboysooner, on 07/21/2008, -0/+11The mouse will still be around in 5 years, buried.
- godfly, on 07/21/2008, -1/+12Deja Digg?
- 5plic3r, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10With a Power Glove?
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10That's exactly my point. I'm waiting for a future super computer that could handle it. But when it arrives all the mice would be gone.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10ill tell you right now I wont trade my mouse for a touch screen, and neither will the other 10 million people who play world of warcraft and other computer games.
- roomforpanic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10The sheer volume of duplicate stories today is bizarre. I read this just earlier today.
- bultaco, on 07/21/2008, -1/+10Buried for inaccurate double post.
- Farmer77, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7These analysts must be related to the 1960's analyists who believe we would have colonies on the moon by now.
- dsmx, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Which means they will never make into he mainstream and until someone makes these new interface devices as cheap as a mouse they aren't going to get anyone to use them unless they offer a much better experience to justify the cost.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7Come on guys lets see if i we can get the front page filled with this story.
- jameswfischer, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7Chester the Cheetah?
- purkel, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7wont it get messy to touch the screen when i have lube all over my hands?
- srujanlive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6This is just what has been said since years. The mouse and trackpads are not flawed. Touchscreens look cool but are just not practical. Say someone has a 17" screen. He has to move his hand from one edge of the screen to the other, which on the other hand can easily be done by moving the mouse or your finger on the trackpad for about a maximum of 2 inches. And we don't like to work that much do we. The mouse is not going anywhere.
- diggit23, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7dugg for nipples
- porkdanish, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Touch Screens would certainly make identifying photoshops easier.
- homercles337, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5"Analysts" are idiots.
- greevar, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5This article is complete *****. We've been hearing about these new pointing devices for as long as I can remember and most of them end up as vaporware. Why would we replace the mouse anyway? Mice are cheap, it's easy to use, it simple, and it's standardized between every platform. Buried for sensationalist grandstanding.
- SanTe, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Hell, my *own* mouse will still be around in 5 years.
What is with futurists having no ability to pay attention to history, anyway? - ChronicColonic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5I don't think I would like dragging my brain around on my desktop though.
- flarn2006, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5↕ ( . Y . ) ↕
- pedo, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6*****. i only have to move my mouse a few centimeters, but i would have to move my hands much more on a 30" touch screen, and my arms would get tired after a while. this is like when they said paper would be eliminated from the office. total myopic *****.
