Analysis: Number of Tech Stories on Digg Is Dropping Rapidly
mashable.com — Being an ardent follower of Digg's tech section, I've noticed that the number of tech stories has rapidly diminished in the last year. Even after the switch Digg made from being a purely tech site to covering other topics, this number kept falling steadily, and it has come down so low that I can't consider Digg a good source for tech news anymore
- 4017 diggs
- digg it
- GIMAD2008, on 02/06/2008, -85/+5I haven't really seen a drop in tech news that went popular, it seems to be the bulk of popular with the exception of the political news of late.
- rebrad, on 02/06/2008, -18/+22Politics is so boring. Especially in this year of THE MEDIA DECIDES 2008. May the best corporate candidate be selected.
- TopherT, on 02/06/2008, -3/+14No way, this year war a real difference than previous. No front runners crowned, a real race going into super tuesday. Obama creating a big following in young people who are actually turning out to vote. Ron Paul, an anti-war candidate on the republican ticket gaining mass internet support which was translated into a vast campaign war chest. This primary season is very interesting.
That said, I mourn digg's status as a tech site. Its all lolcats style stupidity and political non-stories. I've reverted to slashdot and physorg for tech stuff.- chromerium, on 02/06/2008, -7/+1I CAN HAS UR TECH STORY?

- homerowedasdf, on 02/06/2008, -34/+5Ron Paul.
- ruddy, on 02/06/2008, -33/+11digg *IS* a political site. the most tech digg gets nowadays is CSS or sql for dummies. digg is a spam forum for leftist nubs who have zero geek cred.
- pauleric, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6You're getting dugg down, but witness the Rubik's Cube front page story. None of the current comments suggest that you enjoy math or puzzles, just that you take the stickers off or follow the instructions or other nonsense. I'm all about making pointless jokes, but I don't think they were joking. But I'll probably continue to read digg, because you do get a wide variety of stuff, and I enjoy making stupid jokes.
- xevidentx, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3digg him down all you want , but he's right. digg is a circle jerk for fanboys and the occasional funny story or cool picture
im going to run before all you god-hating, apple loving, ronpaul supporting fantards come get me- nullifidian0, on 02/06/2008, -2/+6Who the ***** is Ron Paul?
- robbh66, on 02/06/2008, -4/+42"A 42 year-old male from Georgia (US) who joined Digg on January 25th, 2008"
Glad you're speaking from all of your (apparent) vast experience here.- AshTR, on 02/06/2008, -1/+14I've been since February 2005 and I can agree. I'm starting to get tired of all these political digg stories and worthless spam. What happened to all the gaming and tech stories that made Digg great?
- jospinlase, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3maybe hes like me, i started viewing digg for several years before i decided to actually get an account...

About Me: "I Digg and comment on submissions more than I submit items, so please share some Digg "love" with me and Digg a couple of my favorites. I only shout about once per day. Send those shouts I Digg em all!"
At 1800+ diggs and 1000+ friends, all under two weeks, you are *everything* that is wrong with digg these days. - CoolWind, on 02/06/2008, -1/+14I agree that there aren't enough tech articles.
Digg is for digg gamers. Rah rah Obama. Rah rah Ron Paul. Hate Hillary. Hate Scientology. Hate the Bush administration. Hate the RIAA and the MPAA.
Tech articles don't make it because most of them aren't new enough, and no one's gaming them. Duplicate articles are great for people who haven't seen them before, or for people like me who may have forgotten about them, but they probably get buried by the cognoscenti. - milkmage, on 02/06/2008, -3/+15you've been on digg for LESS THAN A MONTH. STFU.
- simpleid, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5I remember when I would be dugg down for pointing this out a long time ago, but during the times I was complaining was when the physorg articles stopped hitting the front page. To see the word 'physics' on digg for example now takes some ***** context like... *looks at the front page*, 'hollywoord'... you people have dumbed this place down to 'mtv stupidity,' the movie idiocracy was right.
- rpgmaker, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2FTA: "Some laughed at Slashdot when Digg surpassed its rankings on sites like Alexa, saying that Digg is going to stomp all over it; however, today Slashdot still delivers technology stories, while Digg simply isn’t tech-oriented at all anymore. Perhaps Digg is now bigger than Slashdot, but Slashdot is now a significantly more focused site than Digg; in a way, it is again the biggest wisdom-of-crowds tech site out there. It beat Digg at its own game by doing next to nothing."
And to think that I've unsubscribed from the slashdot RSS feed because the tech news were practically the same as digg (at that time).
- rebrad, on 02/06/2008, -18/+22Politics is so boring. Especially in this year of THE MEDIA DECIDES 2008. May the best corporate candidate be selected.
- igmuska, on 02/06/2008, -29/+4I feel that web2.0 technology matures with its corresponding growth of tech sites for techs, more notable technological advancements will be sent to digg for mainstream society consumption while the arcane inner mechanics will be kept in the tech sites.
- mklopez, on 02/06/2008, -7/+2So is that why the number of popular stories about AJAX has dropped to almost zero?
- Killwize, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5AJAX is boring after you learn about it for so long... Just like JavaScript. I mean you don't see any JavaScript stories? Do you?
Anyway...
I feel the same way about Digg, but in other subjects too, especially with the onset of pictures. (Some popular Diggs where just a picture, no article or anything.)
Now Digg is more like ebaumsworld! (a "good" site but now why I visit)...
I don't know, Maybe it was because I got my Mom to use Digg as her browsers home page.
- Killwize, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5AJAX is boring after you learn about it for so long... Just like JavaScript. I mean you don't see any JavaScript stories? Do you?

- FSUCHEEF, on 02/06/2008, -5/+482I agree 2 years ago you could get a really interesting tech article about daily
- SonicRush, on 02/06/2008, -1/+126Exactly. If I go on digg on another computer these days(where I don't have all the politial stuff unchecked) the front page is nothing but Fox News this, CIA that, Presidential Primaries, blah blah blah. And the interesting tech news gets 600 diggs and shuffled to the 2nd page. :(
- jonohull, on 02/06/2008, -15/+59Can't people just look at the tech section?
- masterm1nd, on 02/06/2008, -4/+41Are you wearing an actual tinfoil hat in your photo?
- Purin, on 02/06/2008, -1/+23I suppose this proves that less and less tech-savvy people actually read Digg.
- masterm1nd, on 02/06/2008, -6/+3G4 != Tech.
- stalefries, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8Probably aluminum.
- LR2_, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8It's a picture of Martin Sargent.
- MacParrot, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Better that than Dick Sargent (or was that Dick York?)
- hockey, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1The problem is since digg is NOTHING but what SonicRush said there's nothing NEW in the tech section. Once you've read the stories and nothing changes there's no reason to go again.
- masterm1nd, on 02/06/2008, -4/+41Are you wearing an actual tinfoil hat in your photo?

- AudioPhil3, on 02/06/2008, -3/+2You made me lol on myself
- poxonyou, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4Haha. Pretty much sums up the top stories over the past few months.
- betobeto, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4And Gizmodo blogspam, and XKCD, and "***** the RIAA", and...
- littlelives, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1...and Yahtzee.
Seriously, I like his reviews and everything, but there are even comments such as "I dugg this up before I even watched it," getting 75+ diggs.
A lot of stories I see are just five-minutes worth of giggles. =/

- joegibes, on 02/06/2008, -10/+24http://digg.com/news/technology
- dafragsta, on 02/06/2008, -8/+2Exactly. When I first started coming to Digg, I had to always click "All" to NOT get exclusively technology stories. Nothing has changed. The tech stories are still on the tech page and I can't imagine Digg not having far more than Slashdot has.
- Bamborzled, on 02/06/2008, -1/+15What's the use for that when the section contains such a small amount of stories, there isn't even a top 10 stories list on the sidebar?
- catbeller, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Like bus bunching or subway train slowdowns, the culprits are the passengers. Digg isn't responsible for the dearth of user submissions. And winter is a slow time for tech, don't forget.
Digg is driven by user submissions.
You are a user.
Submit something to tech news.
- catbeller, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Like bus bunching or subway train slowdowns, the culprits are the passengers. Digg isn't responsible for the dearth of user submissions. And winter is a slow time for tech, don't forget.
- burrgrinder, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Useless, just compare it to Slashdot's tech news speed. I started reading Digg after Slashdot got a little tiresome and repetitive. I'm back to Slashdot for technology again. Hell, even Fark's Geek section is better.
- sapped, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2The problem with that is I would like *some* non-tech news thrown in the mix as well. In the past the proportions were more or less what I wanted. These days I go through some front page and then have to dig through the tech section specifically to find some tech stuff.
It is no longer possible to achieve both goals from the front page as it was in the past.
- borez, on 02/06/2008, -8/+1So
- undetected, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4I've only been around a year, so I don't know about two years ago. But I did notice that the past week the news turnaround on Digg Tech page has been slow. I was wondering if it had something to do with the recent algorithm changes, except that came a week or two before I noticed the difference.
- ccaazz, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2yeah, i noticed the same, stories on digg aren't coming through as fast as they used to, and hardly any hit the front page anymore, literally maybe 5 or 6 tech stories per day, whereas "back in the day" there used to be about 20 tech stories making the front page daily (or so it seemed). Digg needs to do something about this - its no longer delivering enough news to its users, pretty soon people will begin to switch sites, oh and the news which is making the front page is no longer that interesting either - i like digg, but something really needs to be done about this!
- mike17032, on 02/06/2008, -2/+18Its pretty clear to anyone who has been using digg for a while that its become a political propaganda site for various groups to spread their "messages". And it sucks *****. Stuff from Rawstory and Thinkprogress are just as bad as all the Rontard spam "OMGZ BUSH IS THE DEVIL" stories we get by the dozens each day.
Digg would be much better off it went back to what it used to be, a tech news site with a few other interesting things thrown in here and there.- catbeller, on 02/06/2008, -4/+1It's WINTER. Tech news is at a relative standstill in winter months, always has been.
- sotopheavy, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Things are getting bad enough in other areas of life so as to pull attention away from tech and onto actually living long and prospering.
- r00tus3r, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2That has almost nothing to do with it. Anyone who has been around digg for an extended period knows that this began with the creation of the non-tech sections, and the marketing of the site to non techies.
- skealoha86, on 02/06/2008, -0/+10OMG, DIGG IS PULLING AN MTV.
Can't wait for Digg 2.0?- stalky14, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3...which, like MTV2 (nee "M2") will be really good for about 3 years and then proceed to suck as well.
- iainc, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4I think the US Primaries have come to the fore a little and, perhaps, this has had a dampening effect on other topics?
- Zindrix, on 02/06/2008, -2/+4now we all have to put up with the constant Apple press releases when they come up with a new and completely non-practical piece of junk
- xatx2, on 02/06/2008, -4/+5i agree. but it's also logical if one thinks about 'how tech can a site be if it's run by an idiot apple fanboy'
- GhostyBoy, on 02/06/2008, -9/+260I joined digg maybe 6 months ago, and I am not that good with technology. This news is dreadfully disappointing, however, because these articles are the root of the website. I wish to become more tech-savvy and I certainly don't want digg to become too popular.
Digg is only as good as it's user base, and as a low-tech dude I respect the value and intelligence of a tech-savvy user-base. As more and more idiots seems to be voting up stupid internet memes and email forwards I worry that if we lose these users this site will become worthless as a source of anything at all.- Justice101, on 02/06/2008, -19/+8Buddy, diggs a democracy, and unfortunately the whole part of a democracy is that you have to let the stupid people have an equal vote to. Otherwise it moves to a more oligarchical type system. Which can be easily abused. I'd still like more tech. stories though. Kevin, change the algorithm, or let people choose one specific category to that they are allowed to vote in, and only that one. Lets say that all of the un-tech. savvy people migrate to like the celebrity column, you could just block that.
- foxter, on 02/06/2008, -1/+11If digg was indeed a democracy, Kevin--a single individual--would not be able to completely change the way it works on a whim. That, my friend, is a monarchy where the king likes to see his subjects play about, but still reserves the right to kill them and their families. So, no, this is not a democracy. It's a business, friend. Other than that, good points.
- kyrre, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4Also, anything he diggs is instant front page material.
- foxter, on 02/06/2008, -1/+11If digg was indeed a democracy, Kevin--a single individual--would not be able to completely change the way it works on a whim. - Reedan, on 02/06/2008, -3/+122Slashdot has a good balance of interesting science articles, technology, political information, and overall better discussion. I come here for cheap laughs.
- DinosWillDie13, on 02/06/2008, -1/+17Muchas gracias. I am on my way.
- foxter, on 02/06/2008, -13/+1I hate to be the Spanish spelling Nazi, but it's actually, "muchos gracias."
Oh, and by the way, de nada, friend.- Macskeeball, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8Gracias is a feminine plural noun, and adjectives in Spanish must agree in gender and in number with the noun they modify. So, it is in fact "Muchas gracias" and *not* "Muchos gracias."
- pixelate, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5¿Cómo se dice "OH SNAP" en español?
- Fragalishus, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Oh snap-o!
- foxter, on 02/06/2008, -13/+1I hate to be the Spanish spelling Nazi, but it's actually, "muchos gracias."
- iofthestorm, on 02/06/2008, -0/+37Yeah, slashdot overall has much better articles and discussions. I wish digg would add one slashdot feature that could slightly alleviate this problem: being able to weight topics instead of simply choosing which topics to see and not see. I don't mind seeing politics, random images and even Apple stuff, but I'd prefer more PC/hardware/tech/gaming stuff personally, and the content is definitely there, we just need weightings to make digg more customizable to our own tastes.
- airj1012, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4I completely agree with this. I like to read more than just technology but not all stories appeal to me. If Digg could adopt this it would be awesome.
- riah, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Digg devs, an oportunity to implement APML? eh, eh?
- ruddy, on 02/06/2008, -6/+8you do it for the lulz... as they say
- stalky14, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I've found myself going back to Slashdot a lot more in recent months. I also spend more time on Engadget.
Digg used to have its own tab, but now It tends to get left on those other sites much more.
- DinosWillDie13, on 02/06/2008, -1/+17Muchas gracias. I am on my way.
- tsaylor, on 02/06/2008, -7/+3http://programming.reddit.com/
- megaton, on 02/06/2008, -1/+12If you're coming here for a tech-savvy user-base, then you need to point your browser to Slashdot.org.
This is a fine site, but it's definitely not full of insightful technical discussion. (Though I'm surprised from time to time!) - AudioPhil3, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6Goddam you collective “intelligence”!!!
You broke my heart with your group mentality, and rugged mass appeal. :'( - TecK415, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5I'm not that tech savvy as well, but man, I've learned a lot from the submissions I've found on DIGG. It's to bad there aren't as many any more. You're right, Digg is only as good as it's user base. One of the things I love most about this site are the comments; usually very insightful and sometimes as interesting to read as the actual article. Just picture Digg but with YouTube comments, ugh, I'd gouge my eyes out.
- CookieTrain, on 02/06/2008, -0/+9heh, you are spot on.
I think allso that a lot o the "problem" we see with digg these days is caused by peoples poor source criticism.
This is and agregated news source, and by linking to other aggregated news(read blogs) it wreaks havoc to what ever credability this site used to have.
Posting a blog post (that usually even has the orginal source linked) should be grounds for set mode kick/ban forevar,
In short, CITE YOUR SOURCES YOU BLOGGING RETARD SCUM. - poxonyou, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Digg is good for a quick break at work, but if you're looking for more in-depth tech news and discussion, slashdot is much better and has been around longer as well. It was unbearably popular (1000 comments on every halfway interesting story) until digg came. You'll notice a major difference in the discussions; not many one sentence comments or jokes.
- jabberwolf, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5Get rid of the MACTARDED posts that are in triplicate, mostly based on rumors from bad sites, and usually "innovative" only to Apple users that have never opened their eyes to anything else.
Then and only then will Digg become somewhat useful of a site.
- Justice101, on 02/06/2008, -19/+8Buddy, diggs a democracy, and unfortunately the whole part of a democracy is that you have to let the stupid people have an equal vote to. - Tweekster, on 02/06/2008, -0/+22if you are using this as a primary source of "news" i feel incredibly sorry for you. what a distorted view of reality digg provides.
- rickylake, on 02/08/2008, -1/+0Scary to think that somebody would actually use this site as a primary news source. This place is insanely inaccurate!
- tybris, on 02/06/2008, -4/+3No it doesn't.
- Tweekster, on 02/06/2008, -0/+22if you are using this as a primary source of "news" i feel incredibly sorry for you. what a distorted view of reality digg provides.
- SuperWinner, on 02/06/2008, -3/+61Its more of a general interest new site now with smart asses trying to get their comment up as high as they can to maximize diggs.
I blame myself.- FatLoser, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8I'll digg to that.
- FatLoser, on 02/06/2008, -6/+17Although I go the other way... I try to see how far I can get buried. Apple is for fags, Steve Jobs is a heterosexual, Ron Paul has no chance of winning, Digg is awesome, I get laid every day and I have a huge penis, I love black people, God bless Israel. Half the replies to my comments bring up my screen name, which really irks me. Really, you come up with a "fat loser" quip all on your own? You're so smart.
- dagamer34, on 02/06/2008, -10/+7Ditto. Digg hasn't been a tech site since they added other sections years ago. It's a social news site. if you want tech articles, click on the tech section!
- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+27There has been a much bigger influx of new users recently though. The comments are very different than they used to be. Maybe it's just me, but this place used to feel real similar to slashdot, but these days it feels more and more like scenesters and high school kids are just piling in. A lot of it is probably due to the huge amount of entertainment and 'top 10 lists' making the front page and getting send around in emails during the day. These people then join digg and continue pushing stories like that to the top.
RealStory, DoubleViking, and Cracked.com make up like 30% of total stories here (yep, totally made that number up). This place is becoming the E! of social news sites.- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4Feel similar to Slashdot? Are you kidding? I've been here '05 and I've visited /. since around than too and I would never once compare them to each other in regards to how they feel.
More or less the only reason I visit Digg is because it's generally a little faster on the uptake of news and covers a wider variety of tech sites.
What we need is a reddit but focused on technology/videogames instead of a million politics and "Vote up if.." stories.- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+11Like I said, maybe it's just me. When I first found digg, i was already using slashdot. Both were tech and had good articles. Slashdot reminded me of the coder/programmer side and digg reminded me more of the designer/Web side. It wasn't top 10 lists of 'upcoming hollywood starlets' with 500 creepy comments following.
- molochi, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I think a lot of the "older" members came over from slashdot looking for a faster and more democratic method of reading and promoting stories from a tech perspective, but digg is (now) more of a general site populated by people just trying to make a buck off the internet through page views and the ADD crowd that such things thrive on.
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4Feel similar to Slashdot? Are you kidding? I've been here '05 and I've visited /. since around than too and I would never once compare them to each other in regards to how they feel.
- kylere, on 02/06/2008, -10/+1It never was a tech site
- Kautylia, on 02/06/2008, -4/+18It's just an Obama fan site now.
- briguymaine, on 02/06/2008, -3/+10god I hope you are kidding, how many times have we seen Ron Paul FTW!!! in the last month?
- ThirdPrize, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3Whatever happened to the restaurant reviews they promised us?
- electricalen, on 02/06/2008, -5/+2Hey, I found this great TECH site. It has stories that users can submit that are TECH only and no Obama, Ron Paul, or LOLCats spam. If you like it, pass it on: http://www.digg.com/technology
- slipsec, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1"It's just an Obama fan site now."
But then again, so is Ars: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071114-obam ...
Maybe geeks just tend to be Obama fans?
- neptunebk, on 02/06/2008, -9/+37True but the mix of tech, science and politics keeps someone like me in touch with current news as whole.
- Error601, on 02/06/2008, -3/+75I think the brainless flame war repeats have really squeezed out a lot of the real content. I guess everything eventually degrades to the lowest common denominator.

the problem is the site just turned into some sort of high-school hivemind
personally I'm dissapointed playable webgames is so dead lately, that was my go-to place for a time killer at one point - Sogui, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2High school hive-mind is exactly what I was thinking when I was thinking about how Digg has changed the other day.

- floyd427, on 02/06/2008, -10/+379I miss the old digg.
- deezp1, on 02/06/2008, -16/+3You have to be honest, it's good that its not all tech anymore. More diversity of users = More diverse stories.
- airj1012, on 02/06/2008, -1/+16I disagree. As stated above in another comment for this story - "Digg is only as good as it's user base". I feel as the more popular this site because the less appeal it has to me. New users are more or less taking over and criticizing the old Digg techniques and processes that made this site so popular and liked. It's almost as if the website is getting away from its core ideas and the reason it was created in the first place. I too miss the old Digg.
- skin, on 02/06/2008, -2/+1Just because the user base expands beyond techies, it does nothing to change the user base that is submitting and digging stories in the tech section.
- airj1012, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2It's a completely different demographic and one that wasn't around for the earlier times of Digg when it ran more efficiently.
- airj1012, on 02/06/2008, -1/+16I disagree. As stated above in another comment for this story - "Digg is only as good as it's user base". - thelastcivilian, on 02/06/2008, -11/+1I miss even just a couple of weeks ago, before the change in the algorithm. The frontpage stories just seem to be kind of bland...
- Bamborzled, on 02/06/2008, -5/+1I think you're seeing things; for me, it was exactly the same before and after the new algorithm change (except for moar Scientology).
- skin, on 02/06/2008, -3/+1You know, not one person who is complaining about the old digg has been here as long as I have. In fact, there are only a couple people complaining here who have profiles that actually date back to the old digg.
- jer2eydevil88, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5Not everyone who visited the old, old, old digg bothered to register and add anything to the conversation. I visited this site much of 2005 but didn't register until early 2006 when I felt I had something to add. Now I just log on here to see what new Apple toys are out.
- TiMMY8765, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1ok so you beat my account signup by almost a year, but I browsed before I signed up. and I do miss the old digg.
- bat-21, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1That's because most of the old-timers have left.
- AudioPhil3, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6I miss my old dog.
- lamul, on 02/06/2008, -1/+0Umm.... You are the old digg, all of you are.
How can everybody complain that digg has 'changed' when it is everybody that makes digg.- Lennalf, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Well, there have been significant changes to the website itself, including the comments system, user profiles, and the front page algorithm. Also, as the site has become more and more popular, the niche of the site has changed to reflect a wider sample of the population.
One super geek tells 10 normal geeks.
Each normal geek tells 10 web-savvy people.
Each web-savvy person tells 10 myspace tards.
... and before long the geeks are completely outnumbered by fools, and all that's left is break.com with a Digg logo. Then the geeks leave and start another site (or go to /.).

- godfa7h3r, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Damn, I had a really good joke to follow up on your comment of missing the old digg. I was going to link to digg.com on archive.org from about 2006. But alas archive.org is down. Oh the irony.. it stings.
- ryland2, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1V3 was SO much better then this *****.
- stoanhart, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Me too. I just wish it wasn't so addictive. Two years ago, I would sit up all night on digg, but I wouldn't feel bad about it because I learned a lot of stuff. Now, I still sit up late digging, but I feel like a moron afterwards for wasting my time :(
- deezp1, on 02/06/2008, -16/+3You have to be honest, it's good that its not all tech anymore. More diversity of users = More diverse stories.
- imacommi, on 02/06/2008, -1/+102That's why I read /. too : )
- Loie, on 02/06/2008, -1/+19yes, slashdot is back as a daily reader for me. used to be that digg got all the stories quicker, now /. has some unique stuff too
- Sleepytime, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4I quit reading /. after I found digg. Digg would have all the stories before /. and more. It is disappointing that the main focus of the site has changed so much over just the past few months, and now I check /. more often than I check digg.
- lkms, on 02/06/2008, -2/+7I cant' stand its comment system :( i mean, re-loading the whole page just to read one comment .. lame and so 90ths .. and if you select nesting and no filter, then each page has duplicating comments and there's no way to tell comment that you've already read on previous page.
believe it or not but I like digg comment system, although it's a bit buggy and a space waster- KMartSheriff, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Amen. /.'s comment system is TERRIBLE. I loath that site, but I loves me some cool tech articles. Sigh, what happened digg?
- stalky14, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Agree. Even when the content was comparable, Slashdot's ***** comment system is what drove me to Digg more than anything.
- Viriatus2, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1yeah but digg comment system is slow to load...
- inivex, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I must be the only person that likes slashdot's commenting system better?

- nicejai, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8The problem with digg is that it suffers from a severe case of "digg inflation".
Everybody has an unlimited ability to digg or bury any and all comments. Diggs have no value!
If Digg is supposed to represent a democratic way of determining which stories should be bubbled up, each user would only have a finite number of votes diggin/burying comments and stories.
Say, a user gets 5 points to digg/bury comments, and 5 points to digg/bury stories.
To prevent people from registering many usernames and abusing this, only give a random sample of users the points on any particular day.
This is exactly why comments on slashdot are of much higher quality and actually relevant. They treat their points like a $5-a-week allowance, instead of spoiled kid pissing away hundreds of bucks on ridiculous ***** every week.
Put some value back into a digg!- HHP2K, on 02/06/2008, -4/+2um.. no. Diggs have a very high value, and we don't need to be on an allowance.
- Veretax, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Even if I agreed with you, five points is WAY WAY too small. It wouldn't take much at all for Users who are ALWAYS on to bury stories they didn't like.
- anogenic, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2there should be a diggtech.com
- nicejai, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8The problem with digg is that it suffers from a severe case of "digg inflation".
- Darkhacker, on 02/06/2008, -3/+79That's not really Digg's fault though. All content is submitted and dugg by the users. Just view upcoming stories and sort by most diggs. I think the problem is that nobody is looking in the upcoming stories section anymore. Hell, I found this story in the upcoming section.
- dealseeker, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3Vox Populi sucks like that.
- zippychik, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Yes, Darkhacker's right. I just checked "upcoming" and there's plenty of new tech articles there. Thanks for the tip!
- msipes, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I don't agree with that assessment. Digg is the one that develops the algroithm to place the top news on the front page. If a group of individuals want to get their digg story onto the front page, it isn't hard. That is why we see a lot of Ron Paul, Barak Obama, and other conspiracy theorists always having a digg story posted to the front page. They need to reinvent the site again.
- supporter12, on 02/06/2008, -2/+15the "popular" tech stories doesn't show the top 10 anymore
- Cyre, on 02/06/2008, -31/+18The reason is that 90% of stories submitted lately is nothing but Rontard Paulspam!
- NightVortez, on 02/06/2008, -5/+32Welcome to two months ago, there is more Obama spam than Paul spam now.

- bowe, on 02/06/2008, -2/+7no it falls under Apple.
- praxisseizure, on 02/06/2008, -5/+4LOL Apple doesn't fall under tech anymore. It falls under chic. Does that make Digg trending toward chic? Uggh. Geeks bemoan.

- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -29/+113I blame the influx of RonPaulSpammers (not all paul supporters mind you, but you know who I'm referring to), truthers, and adolescents over the year of 2007.
It's to bad digg can't run some sort of age verification measure, though. You'd sure see alot less spam, and maybe the discourse on digg would return to a level above "omg dont taze me bro lol"- BedPost, on 02/06/2008, -5/+7Age verification on the internet?
Yeah, that'll change a whole lot.- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -12/+6I don't mean some "What year were you born DD/MM/YYYY" *****. I'm talking about something like Xbox Live uses, like credit card verification. At the very least it would stop the duplicate accounts from being made.
- capiCrimm, on 02/06/2008, -1/+6yes, because digg should really have my CC#. Don't see that one going awry.
- capiCrimm, on 02/06/2008, -9/+3Of course iz 18. Iz can haz pr0n nowz?

- Guitarzan, on 02/06/2008, -2/+8All I have seen lately are Obama and Hillary stories...
- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -13/+7Because the more sane paul supporters jumped ship when they realized he had no chance of winning. The hardcore ones are still here, still trying to game digg, but for the most part unsuccessfully.
Anyone like myself, six months ago claiming paul wouldn't win a single state were dugg down into oblivion.- artemus, on 02/06/2008, -7/+4All Ron Paul supporters are insane to you.
- chaosium, on 02/06/2008, -3/+6And?
- Toshibi, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8I'm a Ron Paul supporter and have been from the start. I've called for people not to game Digg (been a digg user longer than a Ron Paul supporter, but only by like a year and half anyhow). and I've called for people to be sane and rational. I have in no way jumped ship. I do not vote based on popular opinion, instead, on my convictions.
In the last few months I have seen Paulspam, but I've also seen anti-Paulspam from users such as yourself and XXXXXXXXXXXX and others. As far as I can tell, both groups are juvenile and are merely on a bandwagon of one form or another.
- NightVortez, on 02/06/2008, -2/+4Yes, those who support the candidate they agree the most with and not a person with views which are almost the exact opposite are the hardcore insane ones.
The only way you're sane is if you vote based on those who "can win."
- artemus, on 02/06/2008, -7/+4All Ron Paul supporters are insane to you.
- kenvsryu, on 02/06/2008, -2/+2Well people vote for them.
- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -13/+7Because the more sane paul supporters jumped ship when they realized he had no chance of winning. The hardcore ones are still here, still trying to game digg, but for the most part unsuccessfully.
- Picaroon, on 02/06/2008, -4/+19Beyond just Ron Paul, I think in general there is way too much inaccurate, sensationalist stuff thrown on the front page of Digg. The readership has become a lot of tinfoil hat lunatics.
- praxisseizure, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2I agree. I'm guilty and stand out in admittance, yet I've only recently become belligerent as a result of ... instigations. However, something outside the mainstream such as Ron Paul, does have a place here. I assume we're all of geek tendencies and in denial of our mainstream brethren's existence. I'm over it. If America is coming to an end, I hope geeks stand the high and smart ground coming out on top. Core Digg FTW!
- tian2992, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Age is a quite lame parameter for measuring the maturity on either people, comments or human conduct at least...
More options than bury and digg for comments; that averaged, measure the "noise ratio" (ripped of the XKCD blag...) of a specific user and adding an option for banning or at least hide those histories or comments - airj1012, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I've heard about these Ron Paul spammers and have to say that sucks, but what does that have to do with the Technology section. Wouldn't that directly effect something besides the number of technical stories on Digg?
- j0keR, on 02/06/2008, -2/+2Digg topics of all types are more frequently populated with anti-Ron Paul spammers like onetimer, check his account. This guy doesn't give a ***** about technology or Digg.
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+9The older, tech/videogame interested members need to beat down the new, 14 year olds who have migrated from Youtube. For example, if most Digg users tried to go over to /. and make a comment on a story, they'd be ripped to shreds for their stupidity.
This seems kind of 'mean' or whatever, but it would bring about better quality. - kaelyiesta, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1Not to play down the political spammers(yes, most are ron paul topics), but I find there are a lot more pointless uninformative articles in general. When the top 10 quotes in gaming makes the front page, you can't blame that on spammers, thats the digg users doing that.
- HoboMaster, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3I disagree. Stupid people are stupid people, regardless of age. I know plenty of intelligent young people who I love to have conversations with and plenty of stupid older people who I can't talk to without wanting to jab a pen through my eardrums. By the same measure, I have been participating intelligently on /. since I was about 14. Maturity is more than just age.
- PhantomBantam, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Really?
I blame 4chan.
Digg was good until "Anonymous" decided to take it over about 7 months ago.
- BedPost, on 02/06/2008, -5/+7Age verification on the internet?
- mooseontheloose, on 02/06/2008, -18/+11Bamabots are ruining digg... nobody gives a ***** that some random politician's wife endorsed Obama. GTFO.
- jamesey, on 02/06/2008, -8/+14it was ron paul bots a month ago.
- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -11/+11Funny, I didn't see you complaining a month ago when 2-5 "ron paul takes a *****!!" stories were hitting the front page daily...
- mooseontheloose, on 02/06/2008, -6/+4Funny, I don't see you complaining now
- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -8/+11Maybe because Obama is actually relevant? Though I do agree some of the stories are a little much. Sounds like the RP camp is just pissed because they don't have a monopoly on digg anymore.
- mooseontheloose, on 02/06/2008, -4/+3I'm sorry, but since when does something have to be relevant to be on Digg? I guess it doesn't get more newsworthy than "OMG TOP 10 FUTURE APPLE PRODUCTS". For that matter, I think election fraud is a tad more newsworthy than Kennedy's barber's cousin-in-law jumping on the Obama bandwagon.
But hey - McCain, Clinton, Romney, and Huckabee are all relevant too. Why don't you spam about them? - SovereignGFC, on 02/06/2008, -4/+4Yes. The PaulBots will bury me to hell for daring to suggest their "revolution" is irrelevant, but it is. You know what's funny to me? That the "MSM" and "sheeple" are so powerful, and can destroy anyone, yet somehow the Paulbots and ONLY the Paulbots will be able to do something about it. Somehow, they are both the only savior and the sole victim at the same time.
- SovereignGFC, on 02/06/2008, -3/+12I haven't seen any "Obama takes a *****" stories... All we got out of the RonBots was "OMGF THE MSM IS KEEPING HIM DOWN" and "OMFG VOTE HAX!" Same. Old. *****.
As much as you might not like endorsements, they're news to the 99.99% of people who don't read Digg. They're also news for the non-RP supporters (because RP supporters always love to poo-poo endorsements, maybe cause their guy cannot pick up any?) - NightVortez, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2Yes! We should all vote and support those whom are "relevant" not those who we agree with!
These "Republicans for Obama" articles are so much more useful than the "Fox ignores Paul" and are posted solely to convert people, and not discuss the current state of politics.
- onetimer, on 02/06/2008, -8/+11Maybe because Obama is actually relevant? Though I do agree some of the stories are a little much. Sounds like the RP camp is just pissed because they don't have a monopoly on digg anymore.
- capiCrimm, on 02/06/2008, -5/+2Funny, I saw you bitching about it. Then again, I've never seen you not bitch.
- mooseontheloose, on 02/06/2008, -6/+4Funny, I don't see you complaining now
- SovereignGFC, on 02/06/2008, -4/+6I personally think that we're only seeing Obama supporters on Digg because they know that Digg isn't single-tracked to RP anymore... The fact that the RP bury brigade can't stop Obama stories pisses them off, so they accuse their opponents of doing everything they do. Not all RP supporters are spammers. But the ones that are give all a bad name.
- jamesey, on 02/06/2008, -11/+32hey guys! did you hear hilary farted and obama gained 1% in idaho!!! digg it now!!!

- spudnic, on 02/06/2008, -3/+34There is.

- thatsmyaibo, on 02/06/2008, -1/+71All I know is I met Kevin while working with him at G4 when they moved to Los Angeles. At that time digg was nearly all mature conversations and tech stories...Talk about night and day. I miss the old digg.
- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+22The ironic thing is me (and many others) thought slashdot would be destroyed by digg simply because slashdot wasn't trying to keep up with all the trends in meta news. I'd rather have 12 really good articles a day with good conversation than 60 articles where only 2% of them are readable followed by conversations plagued with trolls and those with an IQ just above a lemon.
The WORST thing is what all of this says about the masses choosing content. Compare the content of slashdot versus digg these days. I would think the digg community is overall much more intelligent than the population in general and these are the stories that are chosen? Can you imagine if the American public voted on what would be shown on tv similar to digg? I'd bet it'd be 95% porno and 5% American Gladiators. It makes you wonder what would happen if they removed all the filters from digg (anti-porn, racist, etc..).
How many front page items are even news?- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5The good thing about Digg coming about is it seems it forced /. to be a little faster in getting news on their frontpage and to cover a slightly wider variety of tech stories.
- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8The competition definitely did some good things for slashdot. Instead of killing slashdot, it made it better.
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Yup, now that some sort of equilibrium has been reached or rather Digg is stagnating in regards to 'killing Slashdot' as it pulls in a larger crowd, a lot of people seem to be returning to /. or so.
Competition is good.
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Yup, now that some sort of equilibrium has been reached or rather Digg is stagnating in regards to 'killing Slashdot' as it pulls in a larger crowd, a lot of people seem to be returning to /. or so.
- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8The competition definitely did some good things for slashdot. Instead of killing slashdot, it made it better.
- rickylake, on 02/08/2008, -0/+0this comment will never get read... but you are 100% correct. The more sites like this try (kuro5hin, reddit, something else), the more it proves how correct slashdot is. They really are the gold standard of web community. For all the times I've said "screw slashdot, I'm going somewhere else", the place I went to tanked and back to slashdot I went :-)
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5The good thing about Digg coming about is it seems it forced /. to be a little faster in getting news on their frontpage and to cover a slightly wider variety of tech stories.
- D3koy, on 02/06/2008, -2/+16I think once the elections finish up a lot of that spam will go away, and the tech will be reborn...or not, and I'll have to get my news elsewhere... :( Someone should buy Olddigg.com and set it up the way it used to be...I'd turn off ad block, just for you...
- wattersm, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1Digg is a trademarked name, you can't do that.
- D3koy, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5Do I crush your dreams?

- HouseofEl, on 02/06/2008, -1/+11Spoken like a true person that can't take criticism.
- toppgun, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5did the founding fathers leave? no, they fought back and brought digg back to a state of intellectual tech news.... wait, im mixing up my uprisings.
- Tweekster, on 02/06/2008, -0/+0"if you dont like american, then you can gettttt out"
wow you sound familiar....
- tedjar, on 02/06/2008, -3/+22I agree too much politics and "WHEEE OMFGHX LOOK I FOUND THIS THING" crap. There is no more news with substance, nothing to learn anymore on Digg. Where has the intelligence gone?!?!!
- estvir, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4To be honest, there never really was an abundance of intelligence. Go look at the tech stories from the first year and you'll know what I mean and not having threaded comments only made it more of a hell.
- darkciti2, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1It has dropped down to baseline. If you think of your average person intellectually, just know that HALF the population is dumber than that.
There needs to be a digg with a "test" that is required for entry. Kind of like Mensa, but just about general tech. - to the point that the young excited IT up and comers can get into it but also sane enough to keep the older Tech. folks relevant so they can share experiences. - shampoovta, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1They put it in a plastic bag and they turned it upside down Ma,...look what they've don to my digg.
- Tweekster, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1catering to its base, the base being idiotic 15 year olds that think they will change the world because they are a united front of "diggers"

- Reedan, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9So because it is election season people digg up old 4chan memes?
- w116tjb, on 02/06/2008, -4/+3No, but stories involving the election tend to take precedence during this time. So read stories. Get informed. Make an educated vote.
- Reedan, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9So because it is election season people digg up old 4chan memes?
- CrazyDEX, on 02/06/2008, -7/+8who cares... slashdot and ars technica do a better job of aggregating the best tech stories anyway. Digg is a good source for aggregating funny pix / videos, the "top x" somethings, various news and yes.... still some tech. fine w/ me.
- k1down, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1/. represent
- TheLoneWolf071, on 02/06/2008, -4/+68Digg has turn into more of a place for top 10 lists and funny pictures much rather then news or articals about technology. It's kinda sad
- Sleepytime, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6I thought when they added the image section it would take all the stories which are simply links to pictures off the front page. I hate it when I want to read a story and it's just a old ass 4chan picture or a broken link to imageshack.
- postalblowfish7, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1all those thousands who digg stories from cracked.com are to blame.

- xpose, on 02/06/2008, -3/+81tech stories have been replaced with complete garbage. I used to come to digg to learn new css tips, mysql cheetsheets, etc. Now I learn nothing coming from digg. In fact, its becoming just as pointless as myspace.com.
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 02/06/2008, -2/+9Whoa whoa whoa ....
Myspace isn't useless, I get 15 friend request from super hot model chicks every single day and they keep telling me they wanna party! - xqb4dpx, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2i learned more than MySQL cheatsheets and CSS Tips back on the old digg

The only thing Digg is good for is some mild entertainment.- Darmichar, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5I think that's the inherent problem with Digg. The people that used to come here and Digg the tech stories realized they were hitting their RSS reader hours, sometimes days, before they ever saw light on Digg. I come here for cheap laughs now, I get my news from Google Reader.
- KMartSheriff, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1My biggest problem with RSS is the lack of comments. That's the main reason I love places like Digg over an RSS feed.
- Tweekster, on 02/06/2008, -1/+0digg doesnt provide news. it provides links to news. well "news" it is worse than fox half the time.
- Soave, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1My favorite part about Digg was always reading the comments on submissions. Sure I could read the comments on a NYTimes.com page, but Digg has a better set of comments and conversations (or at least it used to). Maybe the news is a few hours old, but I'm usually more interested in the commentary and how it affects people.

- sunyata76, on 02/06/2008, -2/+6I actually still get a good bit of tech news on here. Is it diluted some with more mainstream stuff? Sure. But that's just the way the site's evolved through the users.
At least you have a nice Technology section if you want to filter out video, politics, conspiracies and lolcats.- toppgun, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3the problem is that the idiots from celebrity post about paris hiltons new phone in tech which causes it to overflow with unimportant spam. the interesting stories get left in the dust and the people that originally used it moved on because it became hopeless.

The cool thing at least is that we only have to suffer through headlines. I can bury, I can keep scrolling, and I have no need to click on the boring articles.
I don't think it's as bad as people are making it out to be. It's a mix, a variety, a little from columns A and B. It's not like Usenet groups that have devolved into 90% /i/gr/ spam (yet?). :)- sunyata76, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Whoa. My backlashes are gone. Nice input validation!

- davidwasman, on 02/06/2008, -15/+18I blame the following:
1. Paulbots
2. 4-chan's invasion
3. Microsoft's ad deal which brought their fans to bury Apple stories- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -4/+6I'm SURE an ad deal with Microsoft brought in 'Microsoft fans' to bury Apple stories. You would literally have to be insane to think that there are more pro-Microsoft stories on digg than pro-Apple stories. Spam and fanaticism in general causes backlash. Probably why only 80% of the stories on digg now are Apple press releases instead of 98%.
I'm also sick of the ron paul spam, but at least that's some cause. It's more bearable than Apple fans worshiping a corporation and it's marketing and strangely proclaiming their individuality and anti-corporation views.- Zindrix, on 02/06/2008, -3/+1I logged on just to digg you up 1

- x713, on 02/06/2008, -2/+7Obviously you didn't get the point or rtfa. There are less tech articles now then before. Doesn't mean ***** if its all tech but no content.
- skin, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3There is no point and you should read it yourself. This isn't about there being less articles, this is about there being less articles on the frontpage, which is a pointless article because he is comparing time periods with different algorithms in place. If you want to see more articles, click that link in the original comment, then click on upcoming. You can even sort by most diggs.
- jestrella, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1And the point that has been derived from all this is that there aren't enough tech news submitted. I joined about a year and still I could notice the shift from informative web development stories and tutorials, gadget showcasing, and tech industry news has been done towards "10 things I use that now annoy me because someone else noticed them too" and the like. So as far as tech stories hitting front page it is obvious that a smaller marting is taken by them, but we note that less tech stories are being submitted.

- Bilabrin, on 02/06/2008, -2/+36Yeah, there's this little site called Slashdot:
www.slashdot.com
Frankly, I never read a tech story on Digg that I didn't see there first.- Bilabrin, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8Shame on me, I obviously should have read the article first.
Digg has been taken over by special interests. - TwoDeuces, on 02/06/2008, -2/+3Isn't this a tech story that you read on Digg that wasn't on Slashdot?
- Bilabrin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Touche'. BTW TwoDueces is redundant unless you mean 4
- sgtpppr, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3They allowed 'top diggers' to dominate so long that the culture of digg has changed. Changing the algorithm was too little too late. If those diggers picked 5 topics and viewpoints to push, after a while that is all you saw here. The ones that got sick of those topics left or were much less active. The ones that agreed stayed and more came in. Even if you banned the top 30 submitters, the articles here would basically look the same.
Slashdot's editors have always pushed quality. They can be hit and miss sometimes, but overall, they post really good articles (and no top 10 lists).- EditorResponse, on 02/06/2008, -2/+3If Digg banned the current crop of top submitters and banned the people who Digg up their stories there would be a change. Do you know that many of the people that Digg the top submitter stories dig up sometimes as many as 600 stories in 48 hours, or 1000+ stories in a week! All they do is digg stories by name...there is obviously no time to read the stories and these people control Digg.
Don' t believe me take a look at the friends of the top submitters. If you want to change Digg this is where you have to hit.

- sunyata76, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3I must be the only one who finds Slashdot pretentious. Not that they aren't an extremely valuable source, but there's a vibe there that puts me off just a touch.
- nbcaffeine, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Yeah, dumb people are often put off by smart people
HA, for real though, there is a holier than thou and geekier than thou thing going on over there.
- nbcaffeine, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Yeah, dumb people are often put off by smart people
- darkciti2, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4I've also started revisiting slashdot a lot lately. My girlfriend even remarked, "You're going back to slashdot, I thought you were all about digg?".
I said, "yeah I like them both". - antitab, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5It's funny, because when I came to Digg about two years ago, it was because nearly everything on Slashdot hit Digg first.
- AlpineR, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Slashdot recently added a section called Idle to carry Digg-like stories. More "10 most mildly amusing videos" and odd news stories. We're also getting more witty and insightful Digg-like comments. Sad.
- msipes, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2That is so true.

- phoenixp3k, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1How about you go in the settings of your Digg profile and uncheck all the categories you are not interested in. This way you could only receive Technology stories in the front page.
By default all categories are selected thats all. -
