An easy way to cut $20 bucks a month off your Internet/Cable bill
thisisby.us — Call them up, tell them you are going to disconnect and they'll "re-price" your service. No joke.
- 930 diggs
- digg it
- jriley101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This worked for me. If you mention that you are switching to their competition then they will reduce your price right away or give you free months.
- mtmal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I was able to get my "introductory" cable modem rate extended 6 mos. with the same basic tactic. One warning: I had to sit on the phone with the cancellation agent for about 15 minutes while she tried to tell me what a loser I was for being willing to part with their superior Comcast service. I could take the low-level abuse for the saved cash, but I figured you all should be warned that it's not necessarily like: You: "I want to pay less" Cable guy: "Ok, great!"
- corde5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No chance where I live. Tell them you want to cancel TV and Internet, and they'll set a date and then ask why you don't have their overpriced VOIP product. Mediacom is terrible.
- Buschaga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I've done this several times over the years. Did it back in college a few times and cut a lot off my cable bill. Did this again like in late 2004 and got my $120-a-month cable/internet service for $62 a month for 12 months.
However, Time Warner Cable since wised up and pulled a sneaky trick. They raised rates during the summer for new customers but "grandfathered" the previous customers and let them keep their old rates. If you call them up now to try and score a deal they'll give you a mediocre one, and also tell you that if you do this you will be dumped back in at the higher new rates when your discount is over. So it's basically a wash...
I said screw 'em. I now pay $45 a month for the 6 megabit internet only... download all my TV shows off BitTorrent and watch them on my TV using a Mac mini connected to it. If they don't want to be consumer-friendly then I'll find other means to watch TV. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I needed an expensive surgery for my dog and was going to cancel high speed and go $10 dial up; and I told them this at disconnect. They cut my bill to $23 for a year.
- omjeremy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had Comcast and wanted to cancel my account because FiOS was in my area. When I called up, they didn't even try to ask me out of it... weird. Anyway, I'm happy with 20megabit FiOS.
- smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I had Comcast and wanted to cancel my account because FiOS was in my area. When I called up, they didn't even try to ask me out of it... weird. Anyway, I'm happy with 20megabit FiOS."
I'm guessing that they know better...
- HelplessSEAL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33what if they decide to just let you go? If your intentions were to keep the internet service, then you'd be screwed right?
- ivorytower, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32My plan if the rep said "Sorry, sir, we can't do anything" was to reply "Fine. I need another day to think about it," and then suck it up. Not much of a plan, but it worked!
- light50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or just actually look around for a better or similiar deal. So even if you do change, it's no loss. A bit lame, I know but it beats just trying to bluff your ISP.
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I used to work as a CSR. If you would've said "I need another day to think about it" I would've known that you were one of the 50000 callers that make meaningless threats to xcle to try to get a lower price & you would've never got one after that. They would've left a note saying how you changed your mind about canceling when you didn't get a deal like you wanted & they wouldve just let you cancel if you called back at a later date.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did my research before I called and found out the best deal I could on satellite and DSL. I then called the cable company and told them I had found a better offer and unless they could reduce my bill I planned on switching, even though I had no such intention (DSL isn't even available at my address).
If they hadn't made me an offer I planned to tell them I would call back to schedule the disconnection and never called. They ended up taking $45/mo. off my $125 bill for cable and Internet.
- SupaFupa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Unless you live in an area where there is no competition. Then your just hosed. I'd like to know how many places actually offer a choice between providers.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9satilite is always competition to the cable company, and you can get satilite almost anywhere
- DD32, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19And satelite sucks for latency and speed...
- laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Brooklyn, NY about a quarter of a mile from a Verizon central office and they can't offer DSL to me. In fact no one can. So all I got is Cablevision which to my surprise is no slouch, using various speed tests and downloading from multiple sources my connection pretty darn reaches 8 to 9mbit for $49.99 a month. Their system seems to be okay but if you ever need to get on-site service, forget it. They keep sending 3rd party techs to your door that have neither the knowledge or the authority to diagnose wiring outside your home which for me is the problem 90% of the time.
- sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This works with anything... credit cards: "Give me a better interest rate or close my account" (helps to have it near-paid off)
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Cell phones too. You can often get a free new phone or months for free.
- sirber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I called my cell compagny to get a copy of the contract, since I wanted to cancel them, instead I got a paper saying I could change phone for free with another 2 years contract. Then I got the contract 2 months later :)
- kakapu4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With credit cards, you can call and ask for a better rate, but if they don't give you one it may hurt your credit rating to close the card.
Two of the factors in your credit rating are your average age of your credit accounts and your total credit line. Closing your account definitely lowers your total credit line but will only negatively affect your average account age if it's one of your older cards.
When you go for a home loan, if your credit rating sucks and you have to pay .25% higher than other guys, that will be like $50 per month extra...
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Just remember that you need to be no longer on a contract, and should be going month to month, before trying to negotiate a deal.
- jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14If they deny you the discount, just back out. What are they going to do, make you cancel thier service? The thing is, I don't know how many times this would work. I used to do it back when I used AOL(shudder). I would say, "I'm canceling my service" and they would give me 3 free months. Three months later, I would do it again.
- xino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's really easy to do it with AOL as long as you don't talk about money or at least it is before your free trial is over. It might work if you talk about money, but I always avoided it. Over the past 10 years, I've been a new AOL user many times and it's always easy to get a second month free. Last time I did it was for my brother in 2003 and I called and complained about their service at the end of each free trial and ended up with a year of free AOL. I wonder if that's still possible since AOL has changed because of the lawsuit they had for being too hard to cancel.
- Earthacis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My girlfriend did that with AOL and got 3 years of free dial up. Calling every time the trial ended.
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26What pisses me off is that RR charges me a $10 per month penalty for NOT having cable TV.
So my basic RR internet bill is $44 a month + $10 monthly penalty +$tax for a monthly bill of $58 per month.
That FN sucks. I don't want cable TV, I'll NEVER have cable TV. Their penalty isn't going to punish me into signing up TV service. Don't need it, don't want it...
That should be illegal, that penalty fee for NOT getting something.
That's like charging more for "sugar free" stuff. They charge you more to leave an ingredient out that they would otherwise put in.
F*cking thieves..- dawglse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8That fee isn't really a penalty It's there for people who have cable TV ... to feel good and get it 10 bucks cheaper.
I know I didn't really explain it right, but whatever. - brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, RR hoses ppl for not bundling. Our bill is $140/mo with all the channels, HBO/CINE, 2 boxes, 2 remo's, & RR.
- thasmadawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Comcast does the same thing. It's funny how they say internet is $10 'cheaper' with cable rather than, 'we're giving it to you in the ass unless you get atleast bare cable which itself is $5, so really you're only saving $5.'
- rasputnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You have to call them, complain and threaten to leave.
This technique has worked for me almost everywhere
(currently paying 15 quid a month for 50+ worth of NTL package in the UK). - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wish I could negotiate a price.. a little hard when your ISP is a monopoly :(
@pairanoyd, that's nothing... I'm a uni student (college for the Americans in the audience) at http://www.uow.edu.au
First year, I figured I'd live on-campus to make some new friends and have some fun... been a laugh so far, except for the Internet!
One company... this *****-fest of a monopoly: http://www.chariot.net.au is the only ISP available for on-campus students (they're using a PABX system).
So I'm paying $132 for 4GB of download @ 256kbps... now that is not monthly... if I run out I have to buy more.
Oh, and for external-site access we're given 500MB of total download for a whole session (3 months)... I consistently use that in the first week just browsing my favourite sites at uni
"UOW, welcome back to the stone-age" - zybch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Give chariot a call and see if you are in a WiMax covered area.
A lot of my clients use chariot and they sure do suck, esp when you have to wait 80 minutes for your support call to be answered) but they do offer alternatives.
If you can't get wireless internet, give BorderNet a call and see if they can supply you with their satellite service. You get a rebate from the govt so that you won't pay much more than $40/month for their sat service.
Chariot are pretty good with normal to-home internet. $69/month for 40Gb at 1,500k speed. $10 less if you use them for your phone service too. - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's funny, their ADSL internet plans are good - for example 40GB (then shaped to 64), static IP, uploads not included, $49 a month (no contract.)
I dont work for them just a satisfied customer - Elohim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get something similar I live in Canada and our telus company charges me an extra 15$ a month because I DON'T have a phone line and am only getting DSL from them with out a phone. Its stupid and I think I will have to call and try this out. Anyone else have the same issues?
- tower31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are allowed to say ***** here...Sometimes f*cking just lacks something..
- dawglse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8That fee isn't really a penalty It's there for people who have cable TV ... to feel good and get it 10 bucks cheaper.
- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It really depends on the company. Comcast was chock full of suckers who kept extending my "introductory 3-month special" well past a year. Adelphia employees, however, are douche bags who wouldn't lower my rate upon threat of cancellation.
Play it by ear and try to get the lowest rate you can. If all else fails? Go without and just bittorrent your favorite shows. (But shhhh - you didn't hear that from me!)- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, in my experience Adelphia was more than happy to offer me all sorts of free months and such to stay.
The thing was, I actually wanted to cancel, so their offers fell on deaf ears. Their service was HORRIBLE. Slower than advertised, and always going down randomly. I went to DSL (not Verizon, thank god)... which offered a lower burst rate on a good day, but since it actually stays up consistently I get more overall throughput per month (and nicer people to work with).
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, in my experience Adelphia was more than happy to offer me all sorts of free months and such to stay.
- saichele, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1piggyback.
- shockme17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5roadrunner shouldn't charge an extra fee for not having cable service.. roadrunner in upstate new york doesn't do that.. anyways, i have earthlink for 29.95.. 6 month promotion, and when the promotion runs out i call to say i'm going to switch, and they continue the promotion for another 6 months.. i've done this 4 times already..
- brettotte1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I switched between RR & Earthlink (strangely resold via Time Warner who has RR). Earthlink's 6 months for 29.95/mo and RR's 3 mo promo is $29.95. I switched back & forth for almost 4 years then they said I couldn't do it any longer.
- skarbreeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I have RR and am paying the $45/month bare, no added $10 for not bundling. I don't have cable, just torrent my shows and go to a bar to watch the games I want to see.
- kerplunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I saw this back a few months ago (last time it made the homepage) and I thought, "Wow, I wonder if this really works."
Last week, I tried this with my digital cable TV provider and guess what... it did not work. - bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -16/+11Did not work.
Now I have no internet.
Buried as inaccurate.
/sarcasm- warbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You have no idea what sarcasm means, do you?
- crexor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yea, didnt work with me, ive tried this numerous times, especially when theres an issue, and them: "it will be 3-4 days before a truck can be there" me: " well i see bellsouth trucks in the neighborhood everyday, maybe I should switch providers" them: " we would hate to loose you as a customer sir, but if thats what you want to do go ahead"
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6owned
- GoldieTheMack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22 If you're speaking with someone in tech support they don't care if you cancel because they get paid the same either way. You should ask to be transferred to retention and then you can work a better deal because they get commission for "saving" you.
- cryptocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8um....make sure you're not past due on your bill when you do this. sometimes it will work, but most times it won't. and if you're past due, they will just tell you that they can't do anything until your balance is up to date...i know this because i used to do phone support for a cable/internet outfit in the Southeast U.S.
- robinw77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19> An easy way to cut $20 bucks a month off your Internet/Cable bill
What are these 'dollar-bucks' anyway?- zybch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Some kind of small deer perhaps?
- ivorytower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You've got me. I noticed that after I posted. I award you $2.00 dollars USD and zero cents for finding this error.
- robinw77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, at least you've held your hands up! For years here in the UK, I've been mildly irritated by prices written (normally in thrift shops) as £1.49p. So, what, can I choose my currency denomination there? I'll have it for 1.49p please.
Actually, it looks like I need to spend less time in such shops. And browsing Digg, my boss suggests. - cm32438, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zybch
haha....that reminds me of this ridiculous ad I saw for comcast the other day. It starts by just showing a lifeguard next to a fallen deer (pretty nice sized buck). The lifeguard begins giving the buck CPR, and it springs back to life **Screen fades to black...**
*COMCAST, Save Big Bucks!* Is their wonderfully corny pun that follows
(and no, I'm not trying to plug comcast...)
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i actually like my cable company... and think their business practice is decent... so maybe i won't do this...
- rasputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Then you ask for a loyalty bonus. Last call I made to retention team went:
"Hi, my existing discount is up this month and I was going to shop around for a better deal. Can you give me an incentive not to bother?"
She gets a commission for retaining you, it's not hurting anyone.
- rasputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Then you ask for a loyalty bonus. Last call I made to retention team went:

//NO CARRIER - C0D3R, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9First, complain about dropped connections or slow speed or sunspots. A call to cancel with no history of trouble is more suspicious.
Plus that trumps the CSR who thinks she can deny the lowered rate with a file note. Now she's stuffed with the label she can't solve problems.
Keep CSRs on the phone for a long time when they are rude or clueless. It stuffs their time per call average and can cost bonuses and promotions.
Instead of getting angry, ask her to explain how to delete cookies and clear your cache about a dozen more times. Ask over and over. Then ask what "http" means. Tell them you have three Linksys routers attached to two hubs.- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If they're rude, then yeah, but people who pull that ***** for no reason or because they're not being ass-kissed deserve terrible service.
- mikes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Guys come on. I know your just going to dig me down but this is a complete copy of my story from a while back. http://digg.com/tech_deals/Save_money_on_your_comcast_Internet
I relay don't think it's fair for me to write the article first and submit it to digg, then a month or so later, so other guy re-writes my story and submits it. It's a good story but it's very annoying that people do this.- Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Here's a tissue.. /tissue
- akhomerun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Last I checked life wasn't fair.
What, do you want to pay extra for bandwitdth just to be dugg for a day? - tower31, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am really mad because I posted this same idea on www.dslreports.com two years ago.........*sarcasm.....And I will tell you that it helps to have competition in your area and also to pay your bill on time...Being nice has never hurt either....
- sladek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I told my broadband supplier i'd found a cheaper supplier and they cut my bill $10 a month right there
- drakb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1WARNING: I went to this site and my anti-virus program popped up and said there was a worm intrusion attempt that it blocked.
- herchenroder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bright House (RR) has caught on to people asking for cheaper internet service. They now offer a "RR Lite" 5mbps service for $19.95 a mo instead of $45 for 7mbps. I just switched last week and I can already notice the difference. Most casual surfing is not affected, but if I'm downloading large files or streaming video, some files take a while to start loading. Not to worry - the $25 savings is DEFINITELY worth it.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're now paying less than half of what the other connection cost for only a 2 Mbps decrease?
Hell, I pay $49 for 3 Mbps downstream from Comcast. We get HOSED on broadband prices in the Southeast USA.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're now paying less than half of what the other connection cost for only a 2 Mbps decrease?
- melenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Asking for your PAC works well with mobile phone companies, I got an introductory rate matched except it's staying that rate for the year.
This is probably the threat of you moving to a competitor though - DooDooFace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well now that all the Diggers are doing it, it won't work anymore.
- edge001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this happened to me when i called to cancel my xmradio subscription. when i told them i needed to cancel it, just because i didn't want to pay for it anymore - they offered it to me for $77.00 for the the year - which is HALF of the advertised price. i still canceled.
- sparkyodom2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lucky y'all. I'm still dreaming of having another option other than one 28.8k dial-up provider :( (Trees block visibility so no satellite either)
- skerg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cut them down?
- anarchy99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1anyone know is shaw will reprice internet?
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I called to cancel the TV part of my cable. I told them I was going satellite. (Bright House Cable, FL) and got a year free of HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax - and a 2nd cable box free for a year.
- mrdctaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How timely! For the past 2 days I have exchanged emails with customer service supervisors and a VP at Time-Warner cable in Waco TX to no avail. They kept trying to sell me on the "advantages" of cable. I currently have Dish Network for TV and Time-Warner for internet. Because my promo rate of $30 went up to $45 this month I called to ask for a rate reduction. I can get 1.5MBPs DSL for $15/month so I thought surely they could do something for me.
They tried to sell me a bundle of TV and internet that would cost $40 more than what I can get from Dish/AT&T. Crazy. All the way up to the VP and the couldn't/wouldn't do anything. I just got lots of rhetoric as to the advantages of cable modem service (no contract, etc.) while ignoring the fact that it was 3x as expensive. I think they actually believe thier own rhetoric. I don't think that they understand that data service is a commodity and consumers ARE price sensitive.
I told them that the phone company is going to continue to eat their lunch if they don't get their prices under control. I loved the service, but not at 3x the cost! I ordered AT&T Yahoo DSL last night. It isn't going to be quite as fast, but at 1/3 the cost it will be worth it. If I need 5MBps speed I can upgrade and still be significantly cheaper than cable.
Sorry Time-Warner...- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing to keep in mind about DISH. If you ever decide to cancel, they make you climb up on your roof to get the satellite dish and then mail it to them (they do provide the box). If you won't do this, they'll charge you a few hundred dollars to send someone out to do it for you. So, if you're elderly or handicapped, you're *****.
- baker2gs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually did this last month. At one point I was paying Comcast $150 for broadband and digital cable w/DVR. I told them I wantd to disconnect if I didn't the exact same service below $100. The operator said "let me see what I can do". So I waited on the phone for about 5 minutes while she looked at all the options. For the next 6 months I'm paying $75 and after that it goes up to $95.
- mrdctaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Bright House (RR) has caught on to people asking for cheaper internet service. They now offer a "RR Lite" 5mbps service for $19.95 "
Unfortunately, not all areas do this. In Waco, TX, Time-Warner offers a Road Runner Lite service but it is only 768kbps and it costs $30! Twice the price and half the speed of DSL. They tried to get me to switch to that instead of defecting to 1.5mpbs DSL for $15. If it had been faster I probably would have stayed. But at 768kbps? Forget it. Not only that, they were clueless as to the speed. I called once and was told 384kbps and talked to a supervisor and said they had recently increased it to 768. Oooooh....ahhhhh.. - Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We'd been paying only CA$39 a month for the top-tier internet service from Rogers thanks to this trick. It does help if you subscribe to the provider's other services, like mobile phone service and cable. I think it was only a month or so ago that the price went up $5, but that applied to everyone.
For those complaining that you can completely lose your services this way, just tell the CSR that a competitor's offering you less and you are calling to see if your current provider can match or beat it before you discontinue their services. - goliath553, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1theres no way you would ever get a discount for life - i worked for cogeco one summer, no way
- 404UserNotFound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will only work a few times, then they will notice that they have lowered your rate a number of times and will "allow" you to cancel with a disconnect fee of $20 or more.
- rooster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was paying $13 for Basic Cable and $42 for Internet. We finally got DSL in our neighborhood so I called to see what Comcast would do. They offered me a plan going from 6mb to 4mb for $25 a month. The problem is I still need to pay for cable for a total bill of $38.
I went with AT&T DSL for the $12.99 first year plan. AT&T will even give you 3 months credit if you're coming from cable. Total DSL bill for the first year = $117.
Think about that - I'm getting a year's worth of DSL for about the price of 2 months of cable. Yes, the bandwidth is lower (1.25mb), but the performance has been more than adequate for my needs. - WankerWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use to work for Time Warner Cable's business support dept. It's true there is a retention dept that will offer you a reduced rate for a specific amount of time to stay with them, the problem is getting an operator that will actually xfer you to them instead of just disconnecting your service. People use to always tell me "I'm going to disconnect." My instant response would be "When would you like to disconnect the service?" They'd shut up pretty quick. My cable and internet are still free (even with over 400 channels there's still nothing good on TV).
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was meaning to make a site about this (where you could look up all your services and see what could be cut.) I called to cancel my tivo, and they cut the subscription price in half, for as long as I wanted it. I believe AOL and Earthlink does this too.
- andrewwl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0COMCAST tried to charge me the $20-something reconnect fee after claiming they disconnecting my service (strange since their login page was still accessible from my computer). I told them I wanted to keep the service, but wasn't willing to pay the fee. They wouldn't budge, and I cancelled, so maybe it doesn't always work?
- ChinezePanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YEAH!
I did this a week ago with Optimum... after a year the service skyrockets to 200 a month for cable tv, your phone line and a 30Mbit fiberoptic network..
Told them I wanted to cancel.. JUST THE PHONELINE!
they gave me EVERYTHING! for 25 bucks EACH! 75 bucks! FOR ALL ETERNITY.
I asked:
"So 75 bucks for ever.. thats all eternity, never ends, wont cause me ***** in the future?"
"Thats right sir"
"You mam... have a great day. And I wish your entire family and the future success of your family.. the very best"
***** AWSOME! - isuisorisuaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WOWOWOW! thanks so much...and it's basically common sense. i just called cox...threatened to disconnect and switch to directv and vonage. my bill is $170 a month (bundled)...she offered me a bill of $88.92 for the next 2mos and then it will go back to $170 with no extra commitments or contract renewals. AWESOME!
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Going to be a lot of people having their bluffs called and scrambling to reconnect their service for full price 3 days later.
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@022A: if the CSR doesn't do anything to keep people as customers by only hearing "i'm paying too much...i'm calling to disconnect" then he/she should be fired and the person calling would be an idiot to actually let them disconnect their service. what i stated above involves no renewal and no disconnect...just a friendly credit offered to a good customer.
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What are you talking about?
You saying people should be fired for doing one thing or would be idiots for doing another doesn't make it any less likely that those things will happen.
- 022A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What are you talking about?
- ravnwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This may work with some of the larger MSOs. However, we are a municipal cable system and our prices are already low. Unfortunately, if a customer calls us trying this, I'm not going any lower - I can't give it away.
- liuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's useless to try this with Comcast....I asked for the $20 plan, the CSR said no. I asked for them to keep my internet at the original $400 a year, and got a "no". Kinda like that Capitol-one commercial...now I have earthlink DSL & phone for $50 a month.
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just called Cablevision and they gave me a $26 credit for the next 6 months.
:-) - botrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just called cox cable in phoenix, they gave me $18 off for the next 3 months...not too shabby for 5 minutes of BSing...or work...ha ha
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to live in Phoenix and had Cox (they're the only choice available for cable). I hated them. They put G4 on a sports tier and removed it and a few other channels from what I had and then raised the rates, thereby charging me more money for less channels.
They put me on with a retention rep and I asked her why a tech channel (ok, it's not a tech channel anymore, I know) was put on a sports tier.
She said "Hmm...I guess that's one of those curiosity questions..."
I asked "What's a curiosity question?"
She had no answer. I told her to cancel my entire account.
She asked "What can we do to keep you?"
I told her that if they just gave me my old channels at my old rates everything would be fine. She wouldn't budge, so she lost a customer.

- AIIAZNSK8ER, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the link says the account is now suspended? wtf did it say?
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This doesn't always work. I called up Comcast told them to disconnect me. Then they sent me to a "retention specialist", they don't even try to hide the purpose of them, to disconnect me.
I was asked some questions, why i was leaving, what they could do to keep me. Then they disconnected me.
It probably didn't help that I told them I had already switched to DSL and was up and running on it. I didn't want a lower price, I wanted out. Poor billing, poor service, poor support. They excelled at nothing - DeadFly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I did this with Wide Open West, they matched the deal that Comcast was offering at the time (for 12 mo) and they haven't tried to raise the rate since. It's been about 18mo.
